I wish I could say I was impressed, but I wasn't. I finished in less than 2 hours. The plot wasn't that well written or great. Secret societies, ancient magic, saving the world from evil, blah blah blah, the usual. But nothing made the game stand out as unique among similar point-and-click games. It's a decent, casual point-and-click, but I wouldn't recommend buying it for full price (which is currently $10). Then again, I can be miserly.

If it's on sale for $1.99, then buy this game.

I love a good point and click game because I'm all about a great narrative and interactive story. While Hotel may have soothed my craving for a good PNC, by no means did it satisfy me.

1.) Graphics are pretty decent (which you love to see in a good PNC).
2.) There are a few unexpected twists.

1.) The puzzles are so easy that you don't have to think very much, or at all, to pass them.
2.) The story goes from "weird" to "wtf" really quickly. Plus, the character development is very weak and predictable.
3.) This game is SO short. I completed this game is 2 hours and that's with me taking my time. Look at the other reviews, no one takes very long to complete this game.

As a rule, I think that PNC games tend to only be worth as much as: (1.) Hours put into the game, (2.) Strength of the storyline. Since this game's story really falls flat, I'd recommend not spending more than $2.00 to play this game because it will not take you more than 2 hours to finish it.

Hotel - Collector's Edition (Cateia Games, 2010)

While playing I planned on writing a recommendation for this game. Now that I've finished it I realise the thing as a whole has little merit and, aside from recommending it to long time adventure gamers, I honestly can't give a thumbsup to what I've experienced here.

Why recommend it to long time adventure gamers? Because we'll play anything that is an adventure game, and so if you are one and you havn't yet played Hotel you may as well go and get it over with.

The odd thing is that I really love the core concept: you have a fancy hotel somewhere in France, an accident has resulted in a young woman's death. You're a police inspector and your boss believes it was murder. Will you find out the truth? And what's with the weird occult symbology all over the place? And that's how the game starts; for about an hour you feel like you're building up to something interesting, then it all quickly falls apart as the developers, who clearly had no idea where to take the story, slather on layer upon layer of hoodoo and fantasy that ill-suits the tone of what has gone before. In other words, they quickly ruin a good murder mystery with what can only be called nonsense, in the process grasping at various mainstream clichés as regards the supernatural.

Note, the game is short. I logged a bit more than two hours, and that includes exploring the collector's edition extras. Regarding those extras, they aren't worth buying the game for, for the simple reason that Hotel takes up less than 300 megabytes, making for an extremely compressed package. That means everything that counts as art assets including audio is incredibly downgraded to fit the meagre file size. This, I presume, was done to make the game better fit portable devices (there's also a version for smartphones and tablets). On PC however, you end up suffering because of the low quality assets being run through much better speakers and a much bigger screen than you're likely to find with your mobile device.

In terms of puzzles Hotel is fairly easy. There isn't much to interact with. And oddly enough this creates a nice flow through the game, and I became quite engaged early on, despite the game not really taxing my grey matter. Of course, then the hoodoo starts.

Graphics: 35%

Extremely compressed pre-rendered 2D backgrounds. 3D models lack detail. Character designs are fairly generic and lack outstanding features. The game starts off with one of the worst pre-rendered FMV sequences I've ever seen. I mean, straight out of 1992. It really is that terrible.

Sound: 45%

Not much in terms of atmospheric sound effects. Only one particularly catchy tune. No voice acting outside of the horrible introduction and ending FMV sequences.

Execution: 35%

As an adventure game, the mediocre first half manages to improve on Cateia's Kaptain Brawe; the second half throws all that away.

Addictiveness: 40%

First hour, I wanted to see what happens next.

Second hour, I wanted to get it over with.

Overall: 34%

Like I wrote before, if you're an adventure gamer you either already own this game or you were planning on buying it anyway. (Which is how I ended up with it.) For others, forget about it, there are much better adventure games out there if you're only interested in dipping your toes in the adventure game pool. Buy the likes of Culpa Innata, Perry Rhodan (sadly not on Steam), Jack Keane, Lost Horizon, etc. instead.

Heck, now I feel like making a list of the best adventure games.

Super short, expect about 2 hours of gameplay. Unispired puzzles, mediocre graphics and cliche story. Probably not worth your time unless you are an avid fan of adventure games and the game is on sale, even then you may be disappointed.

If you like PNC adventure games, you might like this. It is mostly in 2.5D. The puzzles were just right: hard enough to be amusing but easy enough to avoid frustrating you. The story is a little slow at first, but gets interesting about half-way through. There are bits of voice acting at the beginning and at the end, but for most of the game you get the dialog by reading text. I got it on sale for about $3 and I feel I got my money's worth in entertainment.

Damn, I did not expect all that paranormal crap. The game is not what it looks like it wold be. I still hated the plot; it goes totally crazy like a total 180 of a normal detective game. The game wasn't entirely that bad imo, but still insane. Maybe worth if you're a hardcore fan of clickers and solvers.

Very Easy Low budget game with Good story.

Well, as I try to critisize this game we have to start like this.. It is a low budget game from a company that uses to publish low budget games in general so...

In graphics the things are like a little older from the starting 3D games. At least you'll see curves. The sketches are allright and the photos very good. The game does NOT support widescreen resolutions and actually NOT HD quality. Moving around is in good motion, not perfect but good and now the actions are common to the most adventure games, like things taking etc. Few videos will be seen and their quality is very low even for the of 2010 year that Steam published it. But anyway it's an adventure.

The sounds and music are good. At least they used a studio for making it. It is not the greatest quality in music but still sounds good and it matches in the scenes. Though you'll see sometimes a little bit time difference between music and motion or the dialogues. Always remember that is very low budget game.

The story plot is good but NOT for children or early teens. You should try this game as older. It is a very short game that in solving time I would compare it to the Blackwell series, still not to their complexity and better story plot. It is a very interesting story that includes themes like what about the soul afterlife, egyptian prophecies and rituals covered by classic mystery of a detective's investigation through a murder case. Really interesting and the only thing that will keep you playing this game because...

The riddles are very simple and the things to take and use from the scenes the ONLY interaction. You'll not get frustrated by this game. It's very easy. It's just someone tells you the story but to learn it simply interact with it like asking the questions how things happened.

So... If you want some free time listening to a story to clear your mind or take it easy this will be a great escape. BUT if you want more from a game of this kind(at least in the riddles thing and complexity) don't even think to buy it. I am an adventure fan that I play games depending of my mood so... I found it like reading a lite book.

I hope I was helpful!

A short little game with some very interesting puzzles interspersed with a forgettable and excessively railroady plot, some each of really straight forward, "guess the item", and "I did something elsewhere which silently enabled this" puzzles, and pretty-but -grainy graphics.

I do have to give the game props for having a "speedwalk" button and supporting double-click travel to rooms you've already visited. There are some games I've liked much better overall which I found myself giving up on because of how slowly the protagonist moved.

If you've picked it up as part a bundle which had other games you wanted, it might be worth an hour or two of your time on a long, boring day. But I wouldn't make playing it a high priority, and I definitely wouldn't reccomend buying it for its own sake.

An interesting storyline, but really there is no challenge to this game. It was over way too quickly.. oh, and the 20 hours I have against it is merely because I left it open one night.. in reality you will finish this within a couple of hours

This game was alright. I am glad I got it part of a bundle and didn't pay too much for it. It is definitely not worth the full price. The storyline and plot was average and the graphics aren't that great. The gameplay could have been better, it was quite boring actually. I thought the game was going to be interesting, but it just.... wasn't. Do not buy this game at full price ($10), it is definitely not worth it. However, if you can get it really cheap then it might be worth a play through but you will probably come out of this game disappointed.

Well, it's a pretty easy game, very linear, but entertaining enough if you got it on sale for a few bucks (6,99 euro current normal price, is too much IMHO) (I got it in a bundle if I'm not mistaken).
The biggest thing I missed was the speech, the intro and the final video do have spoken lines, but that's about it.
The story is simple but likable, the puzzles are pretty easy, and no 'dead' ends..

This is a good adventure to play as your first (in this 2.5d adventure genre), took me about 3 hours (and thats including a break and leaving the game open). If you're a seasoned adventurer you might find it way WAY too easy..

So for me to make this game a little better, they should have done voice-acting throughout.. I'd rather have bad voice-acting than no voice-acting at all..

I didn't experience any technical difficulties, I played at 2560x1440 which will give you black borders at the side, but I didn't mind, ofcourse it would have been better if it was at least 16:9 instead of 4:3..

I don't know if they did another adventure after this, but I'll certainly would play it..

Ruined by the lack of voice acting. Really couldn't recommend as a result.
