Rise of Nations

Rise of Nations is a real-time strategy game that spans all history.
Start with a single city in the Ancient Age; gather resources; build an infrastructure; research technologies; construct Wonders of the World such as the Pyramids and the Eiffel Tower; and expand your military might across the world, conquering hostile nations with bombers, battleships, and tanks—all over your lunch hour!

In Rise of Nations there are:
  • 18 Nations—each with special abilities and unique military units.
  • Over a hundred military units operating on the ground, sea, and air— from Hoplites to Frigates to Helicopters.
  • Over two dozen buildings with upgrades and technologies that will take your nation from a small City to an Information Age society.
  • 14 Wonders of the World—the Terra Cotta Army, the Taj Mahal, the Eiffel Tower. Each gives your nation special bonuses.
  • More than a dozen map types, ranging from the Amazon Rainforest to the Himalayas to the Nile Delta.
  • Conquer the World campaign—a linked series of dozens of scenarios.

The Extended Edition includes:

  • Rise of Nations
  • Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots

Rise of Nations is one of the best RTS games of all times and can be recommended.
There are no new good RTS games similar to Rise of Nations, that are known to me, since a long time.

It was a classic and masterpiece RTS in my eye when I was 15. Now I am 29 and I am still finding it a classic and masterpiece RTS which is what AOEIII should had been in my less than humble opinion.

economy, research, advancing in age are what makes this game very good,
Graphics are sort of Age of Empires 2 upgraded with smoother looks.
the other part, the military part is something very different.

Each unit type is useful against a very narrow type of threat, against other, extremely useless.
Too much emphasis on hardcountering/vs useless units makes combat very uninteresting.

Too much american liberal point of view mixing with reality, one of the worst things.
Very weak anti-bomber counters - them being only fighters (american bias = lack of american SAM technology IRL manifests)
Also stealth bomber is impossible to target from either sea, or land-based systems.

Modern/information age lack anti-helicopter infantry AA missiles,

Also, while you have only fighters to defend your cities and one-time wonders, those are pretty much impossible to use because aircraft controls are unintuitive and clumsy.

It is old and while this game gives so much nostalgia to old-comers, claiming its basically The RTS, it definitely isnt to me.

Games in AoE line do not have such weird and stupid, sometimes even counterintuitive counter system. That means a huge blow to any sort of immersiveness. There are 8 epochs/ages, but WW1, WW2 and late cold war equivalents are terrible. Bad aircraft control even compared to its predecessors.

Also, when you are past age 2, and have docks, all land units cross water by turning into transport ships so any sort water blocking access means nothing, except that subs sink each transport in 1 volley,

The game is more complex and it is actually very good apart from combat. It is one of the worst games I played, if not the worst. If you enjoy the very narrow rock paper scissors with non-RL connections, then you might enjoy it.

Do not expect that this game is as good as others say. It has its qualities but fails very hard in other ways. Unless you can succesfully install mods that work and change the downsides I mentioned, I do not recommend this game to anyone with tastes similar to mine, which you can understand from my text.

So, no I did not wait to play this game for 12 years, I simply stumbled upon it, tested it long enough before it became extremely boring, so no, if you dont have the nostalgia infatuation, this game will quickly turn you down. The last 3 ages are just bad on top of all.

been playing this since i was 6. I remember when we hooked up the landline cables so i could play with people across the house. then it went from that to ip servers and playing with friends across the country. And, of course, steam popped up and i can play with anyone and everyone. 10 years later its just as gold.

only the committed will get that.

Like so many others, I find this game has held up to the test of time better than any other I have played. It was the only game I ever tried the demo for and then IMMEDIATELY purchased. That was 13 years ago, and I still play it every couple years for a solid 3-4 months. It's always fun, and I have only tried plain vanilla single player. I'm sure I'd get much more out of it playing multiplayer and/or with mods, but I don't typically do that with a game until I feel I've gotten everything out of the vanilla single player. And that hasn't happened. In 13 years. The absolute perfect level of complexity for a casual gamer like myself (I could never find the patience to get into Civ). If ever there has been a game so obviously deserving of a sequel, it is this one. Please!!

I used to play this game at my uncles house when I was a kid; all I would do is make armies in the scenario editor and unleash them on each other. Fast forward about 8 years and now ive got it on steam and I dont even know how the editor works, but I conquered europe so thats a bonus.
10/10 entertained me for 8 years, including approximately 8 year gap in the middle.

By far one of the most memorable games I have ever played in my lifetime. Don't let the hours fool you; I played this game and the add on from the disk way back when it was originally released.

I really enjoyed playing coop with friends and advancing through the ages while maintaining your tech and resources was the most fun I ever had. Granted this presents rush scenarios but with multiple maps, play styles and Steam Workshop, this game cannot be beat!

Highly recommended from me!

Age Of Empires and Civilization had a baby.
It's everything you could wish for in both franchises, tired of how aoeII has you going only through the medieval eras? Annoyed with waiting another turn in civ when you could just tell that f*cking worker to come here?
RoN is the logical extension of that, it goes beyond the tried and true modalities of standard rts fare and achieves something hardly any other rts or for that matter game has tried.

With the tech tree removed, the player doesn't have to wonder what logical pathways the authors followed when they had you go from wheel to the binocular to the atom bomb. What you've got here is streamlined: Pop cap bothering you? Military upgrade. Wanna expand? Civics. Commerce cap? Economy. Production too low? Science of course!
And then you advance to the next age.
Which does look substantially different. The architecture, the playstyle (in part), the units all look like they're really from the future compared to the loincloth wearing barbarians you started with.

There are races, and they do get bonuses, which feel more like personalized cheat codes. What else would you call instant worker spawn (china), extra city expansion (zulus), 3 free horse archers per stable (mongols), 2 extra max farms (egyptians), no borders (some indian tribe), double capital (persians) etc.?
WIth so many nations it's not hard to find one to suit your playstyle depending on what you feel in the morning.

Little caveat: The game is ideological, the two types of government have a clear bias, one "libertarian" (democracy/republic/capitalism) against one "authoritarian" (despotism/monarchy/socialism). But it's not as visibly overbearing as what civlization does, where the difference between being LITERALLY FASCIST NAZI HITLER and a snarky liberal late night talk show host is wether you pick assembly line or the scientific method.

What's more like age of empires is the warfare, it's the good old rock paper scissor we all love to hate: cavalry beats archer, archer beats infantry, infantry crushed beneath the treads of a tank, tank is nuked by the science civilization.
The difference between one age and nother is evident, especially in gameplay, if you don't catch up you're dead behind.
Castles and towers and barracks and siege workshops all work exactly like they did in aoe2, with the thing above as well as expanding and contracting borders.

Especially with the HD re-release, everythign is polished and overpolished, with one click you can get into multiplayer or stream on twitch or start a mod up.

This is a game from my youth that I always seem to come back to. I have always loved the strategy and advancement along the ages. It is a great game to play with your friends also. The mass of settings and variation in nations gives a lot of diversity. The graphics are a bit dated but that is sort of a given for its age. However I would always recommend this any strategy gamer no matter how old it may be.

The true followup to Age of Empires II, Rise of Nations incorporates some nifty complexities from empire-building games like Civilization while reducing the amount of micromanagement you need to succeed. If there's a complaint I can level against the game, it's that all the civilizations start feeling pretty samey once you reach the Modern Age and the chariots, Roman legions, and war elephants give way to tanks and howitzers. But even that complaint sort of disappears when you can drop a nuclear ICBM on a bunch of medieval peasants.

It's a good game!

This game is basically the child of Age of Empires and Civilization.
The nations are all very unqiue, and I particularly like how they don't have just standard skins in late game. If a faction historically died out before a certain age, they design the units to fit how the creators thought the faction's troops would have looked.
This game has everything I loved about the Age of Empires series, and throws in Air combat and missiles. What's not to love?

One of the greatest strategies ever developed. If you like games like Age of Empires or Empire Earth this is the one you don't want to miss. A game where you gather resources, research technologies, improve units, fight, command and conquer! This is a dream!. Rise of Nations comes with exciting campains where your goal is for instance to conquer 330 BC known world as Alexander the Great or conquest of the world during cold war for either CCCP or USA.

For instance, I've played Alexander's campain for a while and it was very entertraining because every location on the map had it's own special rules and ways to win, so it kept the game interesting and not repetitive. The game offers much more than classic beat your enemies modes such as Assassin (FFA with special rules), Musical Chairs (every few minutes player with the lowest score looses) or Sudden death. I loved classic version and this -extended- is even more entertaining.
