What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Disco Dodgeball has been under development for a year and a half with constant updates and communication with fans. A lot of player suggestions have wound up in the game and I rely very much on player feedback to guide implementation of specific features. It is already in a fun and playable state, and at this point is now very close to an official release version with most of the major features in place.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I am planning to launch in late January 2015.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Before I release Disco Dodgeball, I will be working on the following elements:
  • Additional singleplayer content
  • Trading Cards
  • Finalize art assets (powerup icons, etc.)
  • More bot customization options
  • Server setting voting
  • Dedicated server support

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Disco Dodgeball is about 95% complete. It has most of the major features intact including online multiplayer, Bot AI, character customization, powerups, many different levels and game modes, singleplayer challenges, achievements, leaderboards, chat, stats, and a variety of server options.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The official release will be priced between $10 and $15.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I have constantly communicated with players during the game's development, and will continue to do so. I respond to all feedback on the community page, and also run a subreddit at http://www.reddit.com/r/discododgeball/ where I post news and respond to suggestions.”

Free demo now available on Steam!

For the past several weeks I've been updating features behind-the-scenes to allow for a free Steam demo, and it's finally out today! I figured it might be a good way to draw new attention to the game as well as help keep rooms full because the demo is multiplayer-compatible with the full version.

Includes:

- Quick Match for online multiplayer (all modes / levels enabled)
- Training
- Bot Match (with some limited settings)

Does not include:

- Create custom match
- Join specific match
- Singleplayer challenges
- Stats / XP / Leaderboards
- Bot Customizations

My hope is that players play the demo a lot, but will feel they are missing out on having their stats tracked and get jealous of all the people with high XP levels and sweet sunglasses. Plus if they want to coordinate with friends, they'll really need to pick up a some full version copies.

Update .371 now available

Hi! I just released another minor update, fixing some annoying small problems. Some of these could have caused issues with the demo being released tomorrow afternoon, so I wanted to fix them beforehand.

Fixed 'team select' showing 'cancel' when switching teams
Added cheat detection for speedhacks
Improved menu logo
Made catching slightly harder
Removed 'All Monster truck tire' from arena modifiers
Default network connection set to 'best' instead of US East Coast
If banned from a room, can not use QuickPlay for 24 hours
Improved chat font & resolution - sadly emoticons are gone : (
FFA scoreboard text is now white
If create room using QuickPlay fails, attempts again
On in-game main menu, if using 'best' connection now shows server name

I changed the network connection to 'Best' because hopefully with the demo available we'll get players spread out among all server regions, without a need to cluster everyone on the East Coast server. This increases server population but can lead to bad pings.

You can always change your server in the Options/Network panel if you still want to play against people on other servers. Also, if you have played the game previously, the East Coast server is probably stored in your preferences so you'll stay on that one until you specifically change it.

I havn't played a game that got me this excited for many years. It's so energetic and exciting and kinda rekindles how games used to feel for me when I was younger. It's a lot of fun and definitely worth picking up.

You and everyone else are robots that zip around various different rooms and try and blow each other up with dodgeballs. It's fast paced, and me and some friends have been playing it together lately. Me and one other in particular pull some crazy stunts against each other, it's great. The level designs are great, there are quite a few game modes to choose from. The soundtrack is really good. There are powerups you can pick up around the room as well that will effect your movement or the dodgeball. You can play with real people and/or bots.

It's just pure awesome. Really refreshing title here. Worth every penny, if I spent a penny on it (it was gifted to me).

Storyline
-Amazing.
-Flawless perspective.
-Best character development 2014.

Combat
-Advanced melee combat.
-Tons of weapons.
-May get confusing at times, objective of combat not clear enough.

Other
-Advanced fish AI.

Overall, this game gets a...

(z2-z3)^2(4(z3-z1)(z1-z2) sin^2) alpha/2 out of 10.

"fish ai not advanced enough"

Robot Roller Derby Disco Dodgeball is the most inexpensive return to the arena shooter genre I've found on Steam...that's also available for Mac. The action's solid, the rendering is high-quality, and the music's good. Although the movement mechanics can be frustrating, one might argue that they add another level of skill to the game (but this is for the player to decide).

Do recommend for fans of old-school arena shooters (UT, Quake), although it recently stopped working on my computer for unknown reasons.

My personal GOTY 2014. This game is a (somewhat) quake inspired dodge ball simulator with great music, flashing lights, and neon fueled robots. While there are quite a few gamemodes the three that stand out to me are normal (first to some amount of style points wins), elimination (standard dodgeball, you get hit you're out. If a teammate catches a ball someone comes back in), and deathmatch (first to some amount of kills). All that being said, servers are usually empty so you'll be playing against bots unless you have friends. The bots can hold their own though.

I have over 100 hours at the moment and I wouldn't take back 1. This game is everything you want in an early access. It has insanely fun multiplayer and the best community I've seen of any game on Steam. I ran some tournamants and everyone was nice and supportive. You are in various arenas and the object is to pick up dodgeballs and throw them at the other team. Simple. A nice twist on the fact you have to pick up the projectiles instead of having a gun. There are lots of gamemodes and Erik (the developer) is always adding new ones as well as maps. The only bad thing about this game is that more people don't play it :D. There are usually 2 or 3 people playing with 10 or so on weekends. BUY THIS GAME. YOU WILL BE SATISFIED.

Maybe the realities of latency make it impossible to deliver an accountable experience. In its current state you WILL see the following things happen:
  • Pick up a ball only to have it vanish from your hands a second later
  • Chase the ball after a score in hoops mode only to see it teleport across the arena
  • Attempt to catch an enemy ball thrown right at your chest and succeed only 50% of the time in spite of spamming M1
These problems don't happen in single player (offline) mode, so if you don't mind playing against just bots, this gets a thumbs up.
This would probably be great at a LAN party, if those were a thing anymore.

It's unique, fun, and just plain perfect at what it is trying to accomplish. Easily worth the purchase.
The music simplistic design and core gameplay carry it and they do so well. I never though a game with robots on one wheel playing dodgeball would be one of the best shooters this year.

Being created by only one person is both impressive and surpring.

The developer deserves a Nobel Prize. Would buy again.
