Patch 2.3 Now Live!

Patch 2.3
Just a minor update only 1 day after Patch 2.2 went out. Updating the version was necessary to prevent cross build desyncs due to the war salamander pathfinding fix.

Bug Fixes
Amphibious units can now traverse terrains properly once again.
The game will no longer spontaneously pause due to breakpoints existing in some AI scripts.
Desync tracking system will now generate logs when you play scenarios.
You cannot enable the desync tracking system in quickmatch (settings are ignored).

We're still looking into some data fixes that went into Patch 2.0 Hotfix #3 that got lost when Patch 2.1 was introduced. For example, the AI won't cross Yellow River.

We are also aware there is a refresh issue in the lobby browser. This isn't something that was changed, so we believe there is a problem on the Valve side, but we are investigating this. Some people have posted information that if you change the dropdown from ping to something else and back again, it'll recover quicker.

Patch 2.2 Now Live!

Desyncs
Fix for rare Chinese Barrage God Power desync. It was based on the meteor power, but wasn't using LandSfx, and that value was uninitialized, so when it became valid on one machine, it would desync (value had to be 0-900 out of a range of 4 billion). This was quite similar to the restoration desync that was fixed in an earlier patch.
Fix for rare desync involving Ulfsark Starting units after being killed. May have affected other new units such as Alfred or any of the new DLC units, including the Chinese town center upon resign. Regenerating protoanimextents.dat file was needed (adding all new units since the Titans expansion shipped).
There is still an outstanding desync involving resigning that we are still looking into but we have improved diagnostics that have been exposed to this patch release to help catch it.

Mod Manager
Additive God Powers and Random Map scripts now work again when they aren't contained within a versioned subfolder.
Optimized startup time of Mod Manager and modded files are no longer listed twice (that was not the only optimization).

General
Some fixes pertaining to tech trees and hotkeys in 2.0 were accidentally nuked by the introduction of the Version system in 2.1 and they are back.

Fans of this classic Microsoft game will appreciate the new Extended Edition. It includes many graphical updates which makes the game much more playable than the older version, and it also includes the amazing Titans expansion which adds unique gameplay elements. The campaign has a nice plot and varied settings to keep you hooked, and there are plenty of interesting unit types not seen in other RTS games. Local multiplayer is extremely fun and a total blast from the past. I recommend picking this game up if you have fond memories of the original, or if you are just looking for a good RTS game to play with some buddies.

I would recommend this game, if it would work at all!!! I had it on for over 6 months then the update happened and then poof no more worky. Fix this and ill adjust my ratingfor this game... Discard my demands and youll forever be banished to the land of no trees, no fishing, no bushes, no gold mines and constant attacks from a massive amount of myth creatures. In other words Greenland.

This review is for the Steam Version of the game. If anyone who had played or still plays the original version reads here about new content for Age Of Mythology, note that it is found in Steam Version only.

The Titan awakes! Age Of Mythology is back with all its former glory, now with new content. The major upgrades are those for the game's graphics: better shadows for objects, better water effects and a day and night cicle. Also, each culture (Greeks, Egyptians, Norse and Atlanteans) got a new unit, for balancing purposes. To those new to the game, here are its main aspects.

The Economy:
Following the classical formula of RTS, here you have to collect resources and drop them in specific structures before spending them. There are four resources in the game: Food, Wood, Gold and Favor. Food is obtained by foraging, hunting, fishing, herding and farming. Wood is collected from trees you chop down and Gold is acquired through mining and by creating caravans and tasking them to travel between Town Centers and Markets. At the Markets you can also exchange one resource for another. Favor is granted to you by the Gods, and each culture has its own ways for doing so. The Greeks task Villagers to pray at Temples, Egyptians build Monuments, Norse acquire it through battles and the Atlanteans by holding Town Centers.

Advancing through Ages:
In order to advance to the next Age, you must choose one between two minor Gods. Each major God has his own combination of minor Gods, which give the player access to new improvements and to their Myth Units, powerful creatures with special abilities. Once you advance to the next Age by worshipping a minor God, you cannot undo the process. You will be granted a new God Power as well.

The Heroes:
Every culture can field Hero units, which are good at facing Myth Units. Greeks have four Heroes of their classical sagas, while the Egyptians have the Pharaoh and Priests as their Heroes. Those of the Norse are the Hersir - they generate a small amount of Favor while idle, but do so faster than any other unit while in combat. Finally, Atlanteans can pay a price to convert any Human unit into a Hero.

The Titan:
All cultures can have a mighty Titan to turn the tables of the battle. They need many resources to summon and the time taken to their completion is long... But all the efforts worth it!

The Relics:
There are several Relics scattered around the maps. Send your Heroes to pick them up and then place them inside your Temple to gain their benefits.

The Cultures:
There are four major cultures, starting with the Greeks, then Egyptians, Norse and Atlanteans, each one displaying three major Gods; one of them will be worshipped by you. Each major God has a God Power and a unique improvement. Let us see who they are (following the order of cultures I wrote previously).

For the Greeks:
Zeus: His focus are Heroes and Infantry units. He also grants bonuses to Favor generation;
Hades: Hades focus on Archers and enhances the defensive capabilities of your buildings;
Poseidon: Cavalry units and trade at Market are the main traits of Poseidon.

For the Egyptians:
Ra: The Pharaoh and Priests of Ra are blessed with powers to enhance building production. Camels and Chariots are also enhanced by Ra;
Set: Set uses wild animals to do His biddings, while focusing in Archers as well;
Isis: the Goddess Isis gives economic and technologic upper hand to Her worshippers.

For the Norse:
Odin: Hill Fort's units are the focus of Odin, who also grants healing abilities to His warriors;
Loki: Loki favors Myth Units and His Hersis, whose are capable of summoning Myth Units during the heat of battle;
Thor (my favorite): Dwarves work better under the protection of Thor, and your Human warriors will have access to a Dwarven Armory with great advantages.

For the Atlanteans:
Oranos: Human warriors move faster under Oranos, who shows you the location of every Settlement on the map as well;
Kronos: Kronos favor Siege and Myth Units, and His buildings can move from one place to another;
Gaia: the focus of Gaia is the economy and economic units, and Her buildings can regenerate damage over time.

Tale Of The Dragon:
This second expansion introduces a fifth culture, the Chinese. Beside their specific features, like the way they gain Favor - through Gardens - they work pretty much the same way the other cultures do. Their Heroes are the Monks and the Immortals, and their major Gods are:

Fu Xi, who favors building construction, His Immortals and units improvements;
Nü Wa, focused in economic improvements and Her Villagers;
Shennong, favoring Monks and Siege Units.

Finally, the Pros and Cons of this game (with all expansions).

Pros:
1) Even being more than a decade old, this game continues to be great;
2) Previous cultures are better balanced now, with the introduction of a new unit for them: Greeks got the Physician (Hero, solving the healing problem for the Greeks), Egyptians got the Kopesh Swordsman (Infantry good against Villagers, capable of crippling the economy of enemies, buying the Egyptians time until they field their most advanced units), the Norse gained the Bogsveigir (an Archer unit, another ranged unit for the Norse) and the Atlanteans now have the Onager (the ranged Siege Weapon they lacked);
3) Graphics look better;
4) Nice and appealing soundtrack;
5) The Tale Of The Dragon brings a new culture, more maps and a new map size (Giant);
6) Single player campaigns are fun to play;
7) Multiplayer is also very pleasing;
8) Map editor allows you to create your own campaigns to play against the AI or with friends.
9) Various game fixes were made.

Cons:

1) The AI still a little limited here, falling into ruses made by human players quite easily sometimes.

Final Verdict: 9/10

Well, classics are classics. And with all the major updates, this game just went back to the spotlights once again. So, for RTS fans with nostalgic feelings, Age Of Mythology is back, better than before and with lots of fun to offer. A mythic game!

It's good but overpriced. Wait for it to go on sale if you really want it.
The different gods are somewhat unbalanced, but in a good way. If you have everything /perfectly/ balanced in a game, it becomes boring, and there are never any new developments in new strategy. This game doesn't have that problem. One problem it does have, however, is the playerbase. There aren't enough people playing, so unless you've got friends you're playing it with, or you're fine with waiting 20 minutes for people to join, or you're mostly interested in the singleplayer (which I don't think anyone is) then it's definitely worth your time.

Nostalgia alert <3

After losing the copy of the game a few years ago to an ex-friend, I felt the need to buy this game again for my new computer. I love it. Nostalgia kicked in. I immediately played a game and won. Now I can't wait to try out the multiplayer!

However I just found out when playing the campaign, when you advance the age, the game just crashes. Please fix this as I want to continue playing the campaign.

First of all, I know this game for like 9 years now when the "Extended Edition" didn't even exist.
But let's start with the Pros, shall we?

PRO:

+ editor

CON:

- Where is the "Extended"? I don't see anything. HD textures? Didn't see any difference.

- 30 bucks? Are you serious? I can get the old version for 5 bucks in litteraly every store.

- Servers? Every time you play with friends this game crashes during gameplay. Imagine being in the middle of an epic battle when suddenly you get kicked.

- LAG. Even if you manage to play a game without errors, you get lag. And that's not because of my connection.

- This is actually just a downgrade compared to the old version. So many features are not working, just like shared resources. (Shared resources allow you to share them with your team however once you add another team it disappears, like WTF?)

- The "chinese DLC" is just some carelessly created textures of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t-units. Dragons which make no sound, a garden that has textures of some buildings from the Atlanteans, just poor...

- Unfinished things in the menu, don't even know what's going to be there somewhen in 13 years since the developers tend to release things after a really long time. (AoM was released 2002)

- Annoying chinese music in the menu since the update was released in January. I think they want to leave it there forever.

- there are so many more negative things but im tired of writing them down.

JUST GET SOMETHING BETTER THAN THIS FOR ♥♥♥♥ING 30 BUCKS LIKE WTF

Conclusion

Rest in peace 30 bucks. This game describes "disappointment" in a way words can't.

This is a very poorly done HD rerelease of a classic RTS that was perfectly fine to begin with.
The optimization sucks, the perfomance sucks, and the game is ancient.

The new DLC sucks, is unbalanced, even the art for it involves shoddy headache-inducing graphical mirroring.
I regret buying this release. I bought it out of guilt for pirating this game in my youth but good god has the honeymoon ended.

Bought this game again to re-experience a game I absolutely loved as a kid, it was easily one of my favorite RTS' at the time. So going back to it after all these years would be great right?

Well...no. Unfortunately the game hasn't aged all that well. At all. Gameplay is far slower and clunkier than I remember it being, which is strange since it feels slower than Age of Empires 2 (Which has aged far better than this game).

The graphics arn't stylistic enough to still look good, it looks more like Nintendo 64 level than anything that was the standard at the time. While the environments and buildings tend to look pretty good, the units just look fairly lackluster. Gameplay is just so god damned slowed, even the battles feel so slow and clunky you would think you were running it at the slowest speed possible. In concept units all have counters for one another, some units are better are killing certain units than others, but unless you're an expert at micromanaging in practice it just proves completely worthless.

Even when I tried micromanaging my units according to their counters, combat was still slower than molasses and just felt overall unsatisfying. Defenses feel almost worthless in this game as well, no matter how well constructed your base defenses are simple infantry can just break through it in no time. The myth units are still overpowered as ever, even if you counter them with heroes.

Also the new expansion doesn't add anything particularly worthwhile. The idea is awesome! Ancient chinese units and myths all integrated into a new faction! In practice, it's nothing special at all. It feels like Greek-Lite more than anything. The campaign it adds is just so bland and uninteresting as well. Speaking of, the main campaign of the story is bland and uninteresting overall, with only a few levels that really rise up to being great (Arkantos' Dream being the most prominent). All of it boils down to "Build up base, take down X." with very little variation or story bits in the middle.

While this would normally be nothing to really complain about (since that's the core of an RTS afterall), the slow and uninteresting gameplay piled on top of that makes the Campaign feel like a complete and utter grind.

The concept is still fantastic, but in practice it's really just not all that great a game. I've went back and played quite a few older RTS' and sadly AOM just doesn't hold up like its brothers and sisters of the time. I loved this game once, but going back and playing it? I can't really remember why I loved it.

Unstable with annoying bugs:

Played this game over many years on a ton of different machines. This has always been a solid game that, now that I think of it, has never crashed or glitched on me. So when I fired this up for a trip down memory lane I was not impressed to find a few problems:

1. Units stacks report incorrect numbers.
2. Myth units stuck in combat (special moves on empty ground after a kill)
3. And the final straw - game bombed out on my halfway through a fun random map

Whatever tinkering you've done to "improve" this classic game isn't really worth it if it's gonna crash.

Short version - DO NOT BUY THIS GAME, even if you used to be a fan. The amateur developers have completely destabilized and destroyed the game.

Long version - I've never written a review before, but my recent experience with Age of Mythology has driven me to it.

Let me start out by saying that I've been playing this game since it originally came out and I've loved it the whole time. The campaign is incredible, the graphics are great for their time, and the strategy gameplay is the best I've ever seen. It's rare not to get bored of a game after playing it for 14 years, and I'd go as far as saying that AOM is my favourite game of all time.

The old AOM that is... Recently a set of wannabe developers have released DLC that is absolute crap, or at least that's what I've read in reviews, which is why I haven't bought the DLC. I figured I just wouldn't buy it and continue to enjoy the same game that I've enjoyed for years.

Of course, the old AOM had some bugs, but they were minor and the game was stable over all. Everything was fine until the fascist developers of this new DLC started screwing around with the original game! They've removed some technologies and units and added new ones, they've reskinned some things (and did a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ job), and they've introduced a ton of bugs to the gameplay. For example, god powers show up in the area for researching upgrades when you click on buildings like the wall and temple, technologies that you research show up in the wrong buildings or not at all, and when you drag to select units, the bottom area of the screen which shows who and what you selected either shows the wrong number of units, the wrong units, or nothing at all.

I paid to get the original Age of Mythology and the Steam version worked fine before, but the bugs these ameteurs introduced have turned the game into a steaming pile of you-know-what. If you want to add units and other new content, that's fine. Release it as a mod so that when people install it and it completely destroys the game, it's their fault they ruined it and not yours.

To summarise, even if you are a fan of the old AOM, don't buy this game, because sadly it's not the game you played back in the day. I really hope the developers get their ♥♥♥♥ together and stop ruining this classic.

I just want my money back, $30 for a game that doesn't work is something I can't ignore. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME.

Definatly not worth it heck it might not be even worth even if it was on sale(~6€).There is a HUGE flaw that exist since it wast released back in 2003. And now its been 2+ years that people have reported and complained about it after the extendent edition came out but nothing has been done to address the problem.U can play max with 5 AI in single player and if u want to play with more u better end it fast why i say that...well there is a memory leak in the code and when the game reache ~1.6G of ram usage it crashes(u cant avoid it by saving) and i dont have a crappy pc(64 bit windows 8.1pro 16G ram ..).Plus there a lot of bugs/glitches in the campaign too.

I have an laptop with an core i7.
Before this chinese expansion i was capable of playin the game just simple.
Now they added the chinese expansion. The game performance went downhill. Yeah it just lags everywhere. And there was not a single graphic change overall

Now i don't have the DLC i don't plan on purchasing it. But an BS happened, when you let your enemy random it might call out an chinese major god. I was like well i'm ok with that. I don't plan playing with it but against it is not a big deal.

But the the ultimate BS appears. It kicks me from the game(ON SINGLE PLAYER) saying that since i do not have the DLC purchased i therefore cannot continue. WTF are you guys thinking? so why did you added all this BS into my computer anyway in the first place. It used to be good but now its just a more power requirement from the original AOE with DLCs that gimps performance.

I used to play this game years ago when it first came out and really enjoyed it. I decided to buy it and relive the experience and was genuinely happy with the game, but after I beat it I had zero passion to play it much more. I know RTS games have high replay value, but I would rather play something else then keep playing. I enjoyed it for what it was, but I doubt I'll be playing this again anytime soon. 6/10

I LOVE AOE. Played it religiously when I was a kid. That is why it is so hard to give this a no in reccomendation.

To be brief:
The devs of this rerelease do not give a crap. On some PCs the game won't launch despite numerous user attempts to fix it, it simply won't launch. From countless posts on forums this has been a problem ever since this rerelease was.. released. Yet it has not been addressed and many players aren't even able to play the damn game.

There are a number of ridiculous bugs that were not present in the original game that appear present here. The most annoying and angering one is enemy units sometimes being able to glitch through your walls making them useless.

I could ignore all this and not even bother with the "no" reccomendation if they hadn't rubbed salt in the wound - I was livid to see these useless devs have released "DLC" for this poorly coded game for things that are not DLC worthy!!! For example, to play on a "giant" sized map you need to buy the DLC whereas in the orginal this was always available. THEY WANT YOU TO PAY MONEY TO PLAY ON A BIGGER SIZED ORIGINAL MAP. There are a number of new maps with the DLC, which is great! But guess what, I don't want new maps, I want to be able to play as I did before without having to give you MORE money just to upgrade the map size. It is a very basic thing thing that they are using to shill money out of people.

There are worse devs, but these devs have particularly ♥♥♥♥♥♥ me off because of how much I loved this game when I was younger. I get all rereleases are money grabbers, but at least have some dignity about it. This is shameful.

PLEASE NOTE: Most of this review will deal with problems that only affect windows 10 users or people who haven't bought the dlc.

This game on it's own is great, i've had some great times with friends playing this game.
However.
Skybox labs' absolute ♥♥♥ rape of one of my favourite games is not right.
Let's start with this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t dlc.
Firstly, the game can actually start a match with the dlc major gods, but crashes, so technically, they're free, but you have to pay to have the privelige of playing as them.
And secndly, the dlc's actual price, for what you are getting, it's a 5.00 experience, but for some ♥♥♥♥ing reason, they price it at 10.00, and they actually have the audacity to ask you to pay 35.00 for both, so according to them, it's actually worth 15.00, but they're being nice.
Now let's talk about the game on windows 10.
I first bought this game on windows 8, WAY before the dlc came out, and it worked fine.
I then upgrade to windows 10, and decide to play this game.
So i did.
After scouring reddit and the steam forums for a whole week.

Who in their right mind thought this is a good idea?

Do not purchase this "Extended Edition" if you love AoM and you want to play it again.

I want my money back.
Tale of the Dragon? More like Tale of Incompetence.
It really pains me to have to crack the older version to play with friends, even tho I bought 6 copies of the game in sale like a year ago for them.
I feel bad for the people who used to work at Ensemble Studios. Age of Mythology is dead, thanks to the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ DLC and the assholic company.

I don't know if it's legal to fine them, but I'd love to.

I just love opening that familiar old interface, and then finding mother♥♥♥♥ing paywalls and 'YOU NEED THE DLC, PURCHASE NOW?' options all over it. I'll be playing my original copy that I bought cheaper than this back in 2006? 05? and using Gameranger, instead.

ONLY GOOD FOR SINGLEPLAYER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Want to play the campaign !which is awesome! then buy this game ! There are load of campaign mods as well which are pretty good. So you can easily have 20-30 hours in single player.

DO NOT BUY IF YOU WANT TO PLAY WITH FRIENDs OR ONLINE!!!!!!

After they brought out a new DLC which completely broke the game with crashes half way through games and a load of other bugs.
