Beyond the thirteen gates at the end of the world, the game of life and death is played. Draw your cards, play your hand, and discover your fate. Hand of Fate is a hybrid roguelike/action-RPG/deck builder, in which the player builds a set of cards into a deck, which is then used to deal out the dungeon floors through which they adventure. Hand of of Fate is a rogue like dungeon crawler with cards and Batman-style combat.

-Great narrative of the gameplay by the dealer
-Amazing and coherent art work
-Constant unlocking of new cards drives the story and provides you with equipment choices
-Solid deck building, including both events and player gear
-every game is unique

Downsides

-RNG can be cruel
-Few different enemy types (but all are distinct from each other)........cursed lizardpeople
-combat inputs occasionally don't work (maybe it's just me)
-a controller is highly recommended

I have never loved and hated a game so much at the same time.
The concept is brilliant - it's a roguelike that uses the randomization of cards to change your game each time. You build a deck of possible items and encounters, and the dealer mixes in additional ones depending on the boss you're challenging. Every game plays out differently, and the encounters can have numerous different resolutions (based on how well you can pick from cards a la 3 card monte). As well, there are tokens to earn, which unlock new items and cards. It's compulsively playable and always different.
And always frustrating - the combat model isn't great, and there's a fair amount of slowdown (especially when going into stores). The variations on combat (trap rooms, for example) are creative but not expansive enough. And the final boss battle is insanely hard - I finished all the other major challenges in less than 20 hours, but I've put in 7-8 hours on the final sequence by itself, and only beat it on easy (and just barely managed that). But even with those frustrations, I consider it one of the best games I've played this year, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the sequel improves on it. Highly recommended as long as you have a high threshhold for frustration.

I was searching for something new to play instead of all the same online battle games. Then I saw 'Hand of Fate' and thought - hmm that looks interesting and the graphics aren't bad.....so I bought it and started playing.
In the begining I thought, OMG - I'll never learn / understand this concept of game - BUT after the first 3-4 rounds I couldn't stop playing. It's really entertaining if you are into fantasy / role-card-game / adventure story.

Hand of Fate is an action, indie, RPG game developed by the Australian company, Defiant Development. This is one of the best action based tabletop simulators so to speak. The gameplay is very unique with a system which is enjoyable and challenging at the same time.

The story of the game is quite simple, your goal is to defeat the narrator of the game, the fate weaver. The campaign mode contains 12 bosses that need to be defeated and after each four rounds you gain additional bonuses while the enemies become stronger. The game essentially plays as tabletop adventures with cards shuffled face down and your main hero being a pawn moving. Many times the path has different shapes which can make it tricky when it comes to planning your route.

The three main stats that are used in this game are health, gold and food. Health is usually either lost or gained in combat/traps/boons, gold can be gained in multiple ways while food is the resource that makes everything more challenging and interesting in Hand of Fate. Each movement costs one food and it is also used in many events which adds a whole new depth to the game.

The other important factors in this game are the gear and blessings/curses. The hero can gain during his adventures multiple pieces of equipment as well as blessings from various events. Combos can make a huge difference in this game and some pieces or blessings can save your life. For instance, one blessing found during the game let me re-draw any attempt during chance cards, saving my butt many times when I could have ended up in a sticky situation. The system itself is based on four factors: success, huge success, failure, huge failure which usually will either reward you handsomely or make you cry. Another factor that makes this game insanely addicting is the tokens. Each time you resolve a challenge at the end of the round, you unlock new tokens which adds additional ways to customize your deck.

The game excels in particular in the music and storytelling department. The music is absolutely amazing and combined with the storytelling of the fate weaver, it makes the experience even more refreshing. Each time you activate a card the story teller will make a snarky remark depending on the outcome.

After the player finishes campaign mode, the game can be continued in endless mode which functions similar to the campaign but with points given for successful actions, the floor number reached as well as your other stats. This in turn can provide a very long and amazing experience in which you can either unlock the cards you missed or simply enjoy Hand of Fate. After each floor the game becomes harder due to the extra trap cards added.

Overall, Hand of Fate is one of the best tabletop simulator games I have ever played which makes it a must-buy. I give the game a 9/10, a must have to any tabletop/RPG/card games fan.

The whole game is well-balanced except for the final fight, it's so freaking hard, but i won't spoil it for you!

Having recently developed an affinity for card-based games, Hand Of Fate caught my eye. It is a very unique hybrid of a CCG and an RPG, that I personally find quite engaging. The inclusion of real-time combat also adds another layer of gameplay. I recommend this game to anyone who enjoys card-based games looking for a bit of a twist. Personally, I find the card art a bit dull, but if I am seeking that, I'll go play something else. Definitely a good purchase, though I recommend picking it up on sale with the expansion.

I cannot remember when I had such amazing feelings in a Game.

GamePlay:
As always, I start with the gameplay-explanation...

You're sitting opposite to the Dealer (which is also the most important/interesting character in the game.) He is narrating the entire game with comments of your actions and happenings. You can hear his ironic gratulations on some success, but loves to see you suffer from curses. HOWEVER, he has a very limited amount of text and you will often hear the same things. Anyway he tries to keep the game fair and indeed I’ve never been treated such fair, yet challenging as in this game.

On the table, the dealer places chards, which should represent 1 layer of a dungeon. Your goal is to get to the last layer of the dungeon to challenge the Dealer's Champions. (12)
These cards on the table is made of your own created deck + the dealer's balancing cards to make it harder + locked cards, in your deck with Missions. You also decide which weapons, armor pieces, shields or artefacts you may get in this session. (2nd. deck)

You have food, which would heal you +6HP each new Tile/Card you step on, but without food you lose -6HP per Tile/Card.
Life points: 100 may get higher or lesser, depending of which Curses/blessing/missions you get.

Successfully Actions:
Some actions require “luck” (You choose out of four cards. These four cards can contain a “Huge Success”, ”Success”, ”Failure”, ”Huge Failure” which will decide if your action works or not.
The four cards are open at the beginning, then get turned around and put together to one pile. Keep an Eye on it. If you are looking closly, you can see where which cards is. Sounds cheating? Well the Dealer knows how to prevent and shuffles it up to five times and sometimes too fast to follow…

Your equipment slots:
Helmet (max. 1 piece)
Chest plate (max. 1 piece)
Weapon (max. 1 piece)
Gauntlet (max. 1 piece)
Rings (infinite amount wearable)
Artefacts (max. 1 piece)
Curses/Blessings (infinity amount wearable)

The fighting is simple made.
  • 3D
  • No own Camera movement!
  • Aiming enemies with left joystick. (No mark on enemies)
  • Small fighting Areas. (Also trap areas with no enemies)
  • Many pictures on the steam store page depict that!

Control: PS - Controller
Square|Attack - With your Sword, Ax, Hammer or misc...
Circle|ShieldBash - Breaks through enemies' shield. (Shield required)
Triangle|Counter - Counter ranged-attacks or many melee-attacks. (Shield required)

This is the Gameplay. On my opinion, these mix of Card-Game and 3rd-Person fighting is really well fitting.

Story:
The story is to defeat the dealer, which is accessible after you fought his 12 Champions!

Graphics:
I am not such person who things graphic is an important point. I enjoyed it and no eye cancer!

Leveldesign:
I split this up in:

DungeonLevelDesign: Which is at the beginning of the game very tiny, but later on, when you suffer from starving, you are happy to get a smaller area. (Random generated) which leads to very different playthroughs.

Fighting/trap Areas:
They are not random. If you are fighting in an inn, you will get and inn-Area, and so on...

Don't forget the endless mode where you fight until your death. (Did play it one time and wanted to star after defeating the Game.)

All in one this combination makes the game very interesting and the random dungeon makes every step a hope for nothing bad.

Of course, I am also rating the music, which is in my ears simply amazing. <3
Totally love the Battle/Dealing/Reward Music. The man did a well job. :D

Bossfight:
Mostly I like the Boss fights. They were somewhat fair to me except for the Dealer Boss fight, who spawns all his Champions as a triple pack (Jack, Lady, King). However, this is the good part, because it is still fair to fight. HOWEVER, when the dealer starts to make Explosions or light currents on the ground that are not dodge able, because you have to know where to stand, otherwise it WILL hit you. No escape. this is the only issue, which made me aggressive to die so close at the end. However, the victory felt more deserved than in Dark Souls III. ;)

I beat the game in approximately 13h.

The last I want to recommend you is to read also negative Reviews. Even if they are not marked as "helpful", but they may contain things that are crucial to know before you buy the Game.

Hands of Fate is a choose your adventure style of game mixed with high stakes gambling in the form of the cards of fortune except instead of money the player's life is on the line.
Pros:
+Gameplay:Standard gameplay has the player move around on a set of adventure cards sometimes you're lucky and find a "Maiden of Good Fortune",which will supply the player with much needed supplies, while other times you may find yourself ambushed by bandits and the like.
+Characters:Never found myself bored when playing against the dealer as his snarky comments whenever something unfortunate happened only encouraged me to keep going and beat him down.
+Atmosphere:The game does a good job of setting up emotions as you traverse through to find the boss while you're desperately looking for any scraps of food and slowly see yourself losing more and more health until finally you find the final boss and get immediately ♥♥♥♥ slapped to death as you only had 5 hp left.
+/-Artwork:Unfortunately no customization for your hero's features only equipment will make him look different.As for the enemies they're all easily identifiable but there isn't much variation with looks besiedes the boss fights.
Cons:
-Soundtrack:Nothing really noticeable standard music will play while you move,fight and encounter the final boss. It's nice, but nothing particularly interesting.
-Combat:When you do get down and fight the game "attempts" to have a Batman style of fighting, with combos and counters, but I do mean "attempts" as it's easily exploited and very,very lenient.What I mean is that by the time the counter signal is sent and by the time I actually have to counter, I could easily leave the keyboard,go to the kitchen and make myself a sandwich, get a drink, and then comeback to actually press Q. Also, once you have a shield you can easily just right click to victory because any enemy caught in your way can't move at all and will only occasionally break out of their stun,so if you want to beat this game easily just Captain America anyone in your way.
-RNG:A large portion of this game is decided by picking 4 cards sometimes you can get super lucky(large chunk of gold with a weapon) and sometimes you can get super unlucky(lose health and a permanent part of your total health). If you don't like RNG deciding gameplay*cough*Yogg-Stone*cough* then this can be frustrating.Especially at later portions of the game where I found myself trying to avoid RNG as much as possible so I can have the largest amount of health to fight the final boss.

Final Verdict:(7/10)If you like gambling and a slower version of Batman's combat then this is the game for you.If not, pick this game up when it's on sale.

Pros:

This game has hands-down the best atmosphere of anything I've ever played. I really can't think of another experience that's sucked me in so completely. The action is mostly quick and intense, with the card-sequences providing suspense and tension for an overall very well-paced experience. Hand of Fate is one of my personal favourites; it's just one of those games I just keep circling back to again and again.

Cons:

Most of the DLC is unfortunately based on long linear chains of events, and these clash badly with the much more freeform vanilla cards. The camera is annoying on any of the bigger maps. The combat is really frustrating if you don't have a gamepad.

This game is very cinematic; between its mostly turn-based and dialogue-option-heavy gameplay, the great writing and voice acting for the Dealer, and its excellent atmosphere, this is a great game to play with a friend in a dark room (no, it's not horror or jump scare trash). I picked it up after seeing it on a late-night stream, and I've since had friends watch it via Steam broadcast and heckle me to go disturb that ancient tomb because there might be loot in it. It even draws heavily enough from traditional storytelling and keeps its (most visible) video-gamey mechanics simple enough that I could imagine even someone who doesn't play video games enjoying it as a spectator/backseat player; try it with a family member or loved one and leave a comment here about how it goes! I mean that.

That said, it's also enjoyable alone. I've spent enough nights with the Dealer, on hard mode because I like a good roguelike challenge, dying over and over at the hands of vampires or old gods or that bloody kraken that isn't even the final boss or what have you. His dialogue is intimate, and like I said, he does a great job setting the tone and atmosphere of the piece; like so many adventurers before you who have tried and failed, you have wandered into his parlour, and you now play a magical card game built from memories of your adventuring life that may very well have your immortal soul hanging in the balance.

I admit to having been spoiled by free MMOs, to having sinking thousands of hours and zeroes of dollars into individual games skew my perception of value, but most non-free games feel outrageously expensive to me for what they offer, especially when they're short. Hand of Fate is a glorious exception, one of the very few games that I have not once regretted buying, an honour limited among my Steam library to it, FTL, and possibly Portal 1.

My Impression
This game gave me the classic pen-&-paper RPG feeling that I never had... and I'm very grateful for that.
I had quite a few rage-quit-moments but I always kept coming back for more and if this doesn't say a lot - what does?

The Story
Playing on Warlord difficulty the Story Mode with its 13 bosses entertained me for a good 25h.
Additionally, if you read the cards you play like you should, you will realise that there are some great storylines, some short, some longer, which create a consistent fantasy world together.
One of the cool things about this game is, that because of the amount of Encounter- and Equipment cards there are basically no two games that play out the same way. This results in every session feeling unique and fresh.
Other than the Story Mode there is also the Endless Mode where you don't have to defeat a boss but have to keep going until misfortune finally finds you, delivering a great end-game content where you can play to your heart's desire.

The World
You somehow find yourself in front of a table in a huge building, dimly illuminated, a spider crawling over the tomes and flasks on the desk and your Dealer in front of you, laying out the cards.
It gives off a great vibe of mystery and for all those arachnophobic people - you can disable the spider ;-).

The second half of the game you will find yourself in the different stages which are often filled with traps, which you have to try and use to your advantage. Moreover, even 30h into the game, I still discovered some new stages, which always made for a cool change. On the other hand, most of the time you will find yourself playing the same stages over and over again.

The Characters
The one and only real character in the game is the Dealer, and he is all you could ask for. With his witty comments, he will entertain and threaten you more than once.
Sometimes his comments appear to be a little out of place, but that's more a reason for a grin on my face than for a complaint.

The Gameplay
There are three basic parts of the game.
  1. The first is where you sit at the table and traverse over the cards laying on it. Every time you walk onto a new card, one food is consumed and you are healed, if you have no food you begin to starve and take damage. Afterwards, the card is revealed and the encounter triggers. Such an encounter can mean a lot of things, most of the time you get to choose your action and must then select one of four cards, which can result in something from huge success to huge failure. Depending on your luck, you will then gain either resources, blessings, equipment, a token (which gains you access to new encounters) or lose any of the aforementioned, receive a curse or you will have to fight - which brings you into the second part of the game.

  2. In the case of a combat encounter, you will be transported into a stage together with your enemies and engage in a combat for life and death.
    Your basic moves are (move and button on X-Box 360 controller):
    • Attacking (X)
    • Countering (Y)
    • Dodging (A)
    • Bashing (B)
    • Using your weapon ability (LB)
    • Using your special ability (RB)
    Especially with the right equipment the combat in the game is a lot of fun and it feels just so good to go out of it unharmed, after all, you can learn the attack patterns of your enemies and act accordingly.
    However, sometimes your biggest foe will be dealing with the camera, which likes to take some weird angles, rendering you basically blind and unable to react to some attacks.
    Other than that there are a lot of really cool items which grant you bonuses like receiving health or items for winning encounters and tons of other fun stuff for you to discover.

  3. Last but not least you will encounter merchants such as shops, jewellers, tinkerers, mages, healers and priests - on these occasions you can buy new equipment, food, blessings, remove curses and heal yourself. Every store, however, has different prices so think twice before buying food from a mage ;-).

The Visuals
What it does, it does great - the visuals deliver a mysterious atmosphere and all particles and enemies have an applicable design. The stages are also very different in their appeal and often represent the card they came from really well, which increases immersion.

The Sound
At the desk and in the stages the music is great. Additionally, the voice acting of the Dealer deserves praise. Other than that the sound effects of the enemies and attacks match pretty well, but can sometimes get annoying (I'm looking at a pack of 16 rats here...).

The Verdict
If you were ever interested in pen-&-paper RPGs or just like RPGs and/or card games in general and feel that your luck is not lower than average I strongly advise this game to you, as you can definitely have a lot of fun over many hours.

Imagine a board game where the board "spaces" are cards laid out side-by-side. You move your token from card to card, travelling across them until you reach the end of them. As you "step" on each card, it is revealed. Whatever the card reveals informs the adventure - an ambush by thieves, a mysterious cave, a helpful vendor, it's all randomized and set out under the cards for you to discover.

Now imagine the cards are composed of a deck of cards that YOU build, as well as some cards the "gamemaster" stuffs in there. You don't know what you'll get in your travels, or in what order, and that is the core gameplay.

All combat is resolved in a simple, but elegant, action combat system similar to the Batman Arkham games (WASD, E to "counter", Space to roll, and sometimes # keys for specials) and it's fun. Are you wearing a magic cap that makes your hits explode with gold? Sounds good, until you remember that you revealed the "gold curse" card and the more gold you're carrying the slower you move. Or not! It's up to you.

So far only 4 hours in, absolutely loving it. Why has it taken so long for this kind of action CCG to come out?

Hand of Fate is a blast to play, but not easy to describe.

It is obviously a game with cards, but not really a card game in the usual sense. Think of it as a random adventure game where the cards are your storyline, equipment, quests, enemies, curses and blessings. And the actual battles are fought in Hack & Slash real time encounters which mirror the cards you have on hand. I hope there will soon be a Demo available for people to try it, because its really unique and should be experienced instead of described.

The strongest point of the game is probably the Narrator of the Card Dealer, very well done and highly immersive and even comments on your situation or what cards you have on hand. The second strong point is the randomness and replayability, every adventure you start will be different, depending on the cards you choose and how they are played.

The presentation is top notch, the card animations fluid and pretty. Only the switches to the Battles are a bit tiresome after a while, but they can be skipped.

There is a big luck factor in the game which makes things interesting, it can screw you over royally, but also make you come back against all odds. You will die, and you will not be successful in every quest and adventure. And you probably have not many ways to prevent it, its the luck of the cards.

If something is missing then maybe character variety, there is only the main character. At least the different equipment is displayed nicely on him.

The real time battles are short encounters against one or more groups of enemies with varying abilities and are visually pretty and also randomized. The actual fighting is not too difficult as long as you learn how to block & dodge and use the abilities. The store page says controller recommended, but i played with M&KB just fine. The Battles might be easier with a controller.

The game feels like playing a real board game and I highly enjoyed it so far. It came out of Early Access and was updated regularly. I encountered no technical issues or bugs, its pretty polished from what i can say.

I think this game should be played =)

If I had to describe this game with one world, I guess it would be "wow".

"Wow"

Few games lately have made me feel such wonder, had played many as videogames are my main passtime. But what makes this game so special? So unique? Well, it is a card game, and there are plenty of card games. It is an action game, and there are plenty of action games. And yet this game can suspend my disbelief like no other.

This game just want to make you fell like you are... playing a game, and in this simplicity lies its brilliance. It does not try to suspend your disbelief to great heights and in doing that it brings an incredible immersion. All I need to feel is that I am playing a game with that strtange fellow in front of me. A fellow that, like no other character, I wish to pull of the screen just to have a chat over some beverages. Or maybe... a game of cards.

It is impressive how a game that does not create anything new, but just mixes what we have already seen in a way we have never seen can fell so fresh, so different.

As for the game itself, it plays as a roguelite. The randomness, the decisions based on your circinstances, the reset after a failure. Failure that does not bring the game back to the beggining, as the bosses you already defeated will remain defeated, but the entire board of the one you are chasing gets reset. Failure that can still reveal some minor rewards as you unlock tokens. Or even just comments from the dealer.

And I press forward. Not for a quest to save the world, but for the wonder of discovery after each new card. Or even some old ones. Or just to spend some more time with this intriguing character that feels almost real.
