“This game is a perfect example of how much fun a game can and should, be, even when you completely suck at it.”
90/100 – IndiegameMagazine

“Having journeyed through hell several times in my life (once when working for a factory, another time visiting relatives and finally with the ex) this journey through hell turned out to be the most fun by far.”
4/5 – GameplayersReview

“99 Levels to Hell is a game that revels in its own difficulty. Bearing in mind that I described Demon’s Souls as “not that hard” when I reviewed it, this game is harder. Mostly because there isn’t anything you can stock up on to make the road ahead more bearable. No, until you get more characters (there are three to unlock, of which I acquired none), you’re stuck with The Magician’s shotgun and maybe some bombs.”
80/99 – Calm Down Tom

Dante Alighieri was wrong. There’s no nine circles of Hell, its just 99 levels of Hell.

This game is nothing special. It's a somewhat simple platform shooter in which you run around killing monsters and looking for a key that opens the door to the next level, while also collecting loot in the form of gold, upgrades, or even special weapons and abilities. As the title says, there are 99 levels before reaching the final dungeon, Hell, in which you fight the devil itself. There's also boss fights every 10 levels, and each "pack" of 10 levels is an unique dungeon with its own theme.

The soundtrack is somewhat good, keeping a nice atmosphere for the game. As for the story, there is one, but I couldn't get much of it since it requires you to find the books hidden in each dungeon, which, when activated, narrated the story with a whispering voice that was quite hard to hear, and there's no subtitles at all.

Even then, I found it somewhat enjoyable. I wouldn't say I really recommend it, but I can't say it's a bad game.

Love the style and the simplistic gameplay.
It's like a throwback to 90's games with cool cartoonish heroes and monsters.
Plus, it's a rogue-like.

I really wanted to like this game, as it has everything a good game needs: controller support, achievements, platforms, demons, shotguns and roguelike-permadeath.

However, everything it has, it does poorly. No atmosphere at all, bad sound effects. the game, just no.

Happy I just payed 0.74 cents on this.

Really poor feel with the controls. I was hoping it would be a nice twin-stick shooter roguelike, but the lack of accuracy with the controls made it frustrating. And the gameplay just wasn't all that captivating in general.

...an arcade-y take on Spelunky (but without the charm) - fun for a while but ultimately not endearing enough to maintain interest - Steam Controller wouldn't work - and the bad mix of mouse for the menu and Xbox Controller (which does work) in-game just adds to the 'poorer Spelunky rip-off on steroids' kind of impression (complete with ghost chasing you if you stay in a room too long)... okay in small doses I guess, but ultimately pretty repetitive...

Now I bought this game not expecting much. It was on sale for like a dollar, and I saw the review to be Mixed, which boils down to the large majority of people disliking the game, but the random dickriders prop the rating up with their "reviews". Even with all the bad signs infront of me, I bought the game anyways because my Rougelike addiction is actually becoming a problem in my life, and it DID look alright for its low price, thinking I could get a couple of hours of enjoyment out of it. Unfortunately, the Steam majority were right for once, because this game does NOT work.

First off, let's start off with the couple of positives. For one, I kinda dig this art style. Sure its been done to death billions of times over, and it had definetly been done a billion times better, But the cartoonish graphics I feel work for a game like this. Some of the enemies look like they were made in MS Paint using the circle tool, but it's fine enough.

The music isn't bad either. I mean it's nothing I would return to, and after 20 minutes I just turned it off and continued to listen to my Panic! at the Disco, but it didnt wreck my ears either. This eerie, dark slow sludge works for a game set in the location it is (Dark purple land = slow dark music. That's just commen sense)

Gameplay is where this game falls off the edge. First off, the obvious; this is so Spelunky inspired it's pretty blatant. It's like if some 11th grader had to make a Gamemaker game based off Spelunky for some IT project. Same collecting gold for score objective, somewhat same floor layout, and same "throw bombs sometimes when needed or when enemies are too hard for a filthy casual like yourself" elements. I myself wasn't a huge fan of Spelunky, it was generic and had some few minor problems that added up to something I cant stomache for long periods of time, but I atleast respected it. This monstrosity on the other hand, fails on all levels. At first I thought the game was hard, because I would constantly die in less then 10 minutes. But then I realised that it isn't hard, and I was just being garbage. Started pubstomping the first couple of floors, then continued to die again in rapid sucession. What happend you may ask? Well I wasn't dieing from being bad (although I'm nowhere near good, let me stress), but it's because I couldnt see the little ♥♥♥♥ers. There were so many tiny enemies that were either too small to see unless looked straight at, blended in with the ground texture too much, or in rare cases, both. This is a massive design flaw that I might be able to get past if I play this game for long enough. The other ones are things I will NEVER get over, and that's the controls. Now I love twin stick shooters. Loved Nuclear Throne, pretty much live and breath The Binding of Isaac, played alot of Smash TV as a kid, so I would think I know what I'm talking about atleast a little. All this being said, what in the ♥♥♥♥ is this mouse lag when trying to shoot? For a game like this, it needs supreme tightness, which this game is the complete opposite of. These hitboxes? Absolutely abissmal. The most Rougelike part of this game ARE your hitboxes, considering they seem to be different every time. And the thing that would seem like a nitpick but is one of my majour gripes in video games; the jump arc. Whoever programmed this ♥♥♥♥; fire that man IMMEDIATLEY. What in the absolute ♥♥♥♥ is this? It's both too floaty, too stiff, too short, too long, and too loose to be any shades of proper for a game like this.
But the the worst, the absolute WORST, are the bosses. Now I have only fought 1 boss, and if you think im about to play up to level who the ♥♥♥♥ knows to fight another one, you're ♥♥♥♥ing mental. But all the reviews say all the bosses are exactly the same, so I'll take their word for it. The one boss I fought was embarrasingly bad. It was barely even a boss. All it did was go from left to right and sit there for 10 seconds, then repeat until either you or they die. They dont even attack you, the boss will just spawn ♥♥♥♥ enemies that distract you enough for them to go and do their back and fourth ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t again, and the fun never ends. The ♥♥♥♥ icing on the ♥♥♥♥ cake however, was when I beat the boss, the game crashed and I didn't get the achievement. ♥♥♥♥ing. Genius.

Now it may control like ♥♥♥♥, but what about the story? Alot of games are voidless of anything but have an excellent story to make it decent. To The Moon is an obvious example. But since it's a rougelike, I knew the story wouldnt be anything spectacular. But I expected something! There isn't even a little story! Every game, no matter the size, should have some story. Catacomb Kids; you're a child, and you gotta escape the Catacombs. Spelunky; You're finding treasure, get treasure so you can be a cool dood. The Binding of Isaac: Mom is a ♥♥♥♥, kill her. But 99 Levels of Pain & Misery doesnt have anything. ANYTHING. Main point of the game as I know it is to try to get to the 99th level, but that's just from looking at the title. Speaking of these 99 levels, their might aswell be 15. So many of these rooms are the same ♥♥♥♥ every time.

So wrapping this up; 99 Levels of Generic level Design and $0.99 Sound Effects offers exactly what it says on the tin; complete and utter hell.

For the first couple of play throughs it is an interesting game, but after awhile i found myself getting frustrated with how repetive this game is and how nothing really makes sense. The game is good if you want to waste a few minutes doing something, but otherwise i would have to recommend you to save your money.

I picked this game up on sale for under a dollar. I have to say the game isn't even worth that. This game is a piece of garbage and you should not buy it ever. EVER. It's not worth it. Please note that

Anyway, on to why this game is terrible.
  • The gameplay trailer lies. The footage is very clearly sped up and only shows small snippets of gameplay rather than actually useful segments.
  • The game is unreasonably dark and the bright red 'blood' and bright green text telling you your combo score and about the bonus objective contrasts in such a way that it's nearly impossible to understand what's going on. Not to mention the enemies are ridiculously hard to see as well, resulting in damage randomly.
  • The art is terrible. Yes, this isn't a valid thing to pick on in most cases if a game's gameplay and/or story make up for it. They don't in this game. There are very few sprites, the most limited of animations, and the above mentioned darkness makes all of it irrelevant because you cannot see it most of the time.
  • Arbitrary time limit before ghosts chase you down (but don't instantly kill you, they only hit you as you walk into them) a la Spelunky, except there's no real telling when they will come.
  • The levels are small yet frustratingly mazelike. Combined with the darkness and the ghosts, you are very likely to die on the third floor over and over because you can't find the key, the door, or both.
  • The controls are awkward and floaty. The weapons are slow firing and aiming is difficult given the small enemy hitboxes. There is a separate button to jump and to climb up ladders and you MUST start climbing up a ladder to hang on to it.
  • The level design is just plain bad. The building blocks are humongous and there are only a few types of things to find in the first two stages. Two types of easily breaking blocks, one that can only be exploded, the indestructable level blocks, and ladders. Ladders can only be climbed, not jumped off, not stood at the top of, only climbed.
  • The music or lack thereof. There is this creepy whispering sound that constantly goes on that barely passes as ambience. The only time you here metal is when the ghosts are coming after you.
  • It's far too easy to get hit and yet heart drops are exceedingly rare. That is artificial difficulty.
  • There really isn't a story. You can randomly find more pieces of it, but it's random.

The only things the game has going for it.... wait no, this game really has nothing going for it. Play Spelunky instead of this crap.

99 Levels to Hell is a rogue-like"?看板に偽りあり!本作はローグライクではないのでオススメいたしません!

This game is seriously just horrible. You wonder "hey a rogue-like dungeon crawler side-scroller based on hell, that sounds awesome!" Let me tell you this game is not what it seems like. They shouldn't even be allowed to advertise this as a rogue-like game. This game is like Spelunky's mentally challenged cousin. Lets go through the pros and cons.

- Its only 5 dollars.

Alright moving on to the cons.

- Lack of music. Through out the levels all you get is "eerie" ambience sounds. No real music. When you're running out of time or fighting bosses, you get really cool metal music. But that's the only time you get cool music.

- Enemies. They look like they were done in MS paint by a 5 year old.

- Lack of variety. This is NOT a rogue-like game. You'll notice you're in the same exact rooms over and over again. Even in later levels, its the same exact room just looks different. You'd swear there's only like 10 unique rooms, and out of 100 total rooms? That's just sad.

- Not many items. Seriously, I've only collected maybe like 5 items total from all the time I've spent playing. All you come across in abundance is gold, but you'll be lucky to even afford something as small as a heart from the shops. You get barely around 10 to 20 pieces of gold per room, but all the items in the shop are like 500 and 600. You're only hope is to gamble it and try to get more gold from it. There are simply not enough items in this game to make it seem fun and refreshing with each play through, let alone on your first play through.

- Bosses are a joke. Seriously, usually the bosses just move from side to side summoning enemies. They literally don't attack half the time. I'm stuck on the level 60 boss right now. Why? All the boss does is fly from left to right but it summons so many enemies you can't even hit the boss. There's like 30 flying little robots on the room and still spawning, it becomes impossible to hit the boss let alone survive.

- Only 2 types of enemies every 10 levels. Yeah, and they're usually just reskins of older enemies. Just like the level layouts. They don't do sh*t either, they usually just fly around in random patterns and, well, thats it.

- Hit boxes are garbage. You get hit whenever your character feels like getting hit.

- Developers seem to have abandoned this game. Same goes for the community. Nobody is really playing this nor talking about it in the discussions anymore. I can't imagine the developers are still polishing this up anyways...

Seriously, save yourself 5 dollars and go get some food or something. This game sucks...

99 Levels To Hell is one of those games that you just can't stop playing. You'll tell yourself "one more time" and before you know it your clock says 4am! Each time you descend into Hell, you'll find that you're doing it with a new item loadout, and that's part of its charm. Will you get the machine gun? Ice Rod? Bubble gun? Symbol Heart? Crystal Skull? You never know!

This is by far one of the best platformers I've played in a while and I would recommend it to anyone that's looking for a game with variety, challenge, badass music, interesting story, pixelated gore, and chaos! Also, for $4.99, you can't go wrong! I've long since gotten my monies worth out of this game and I still play it. Did I mention the badass music?

Easily give this game a 9.5/10!

(NB: I have played this game to completion in those 4 hours. No use of walkthroughs or prior knowledge. I am if anything below average at this genre of game. Draw your own conclusions.)

Hard call, this one. $5 is not a large asking price; you're getting better value for money than the quarter of a movie or most-of-a-hamburger said cash would otherwise afford you, and this game Is pretty enjoyable for the first hour or so.

Problem is, It's simply not a lot of fun after that point. You will very swiftly notice yourself running through the same room patterns again and again, not looking for new weapons after the first area because throwing away all the upgrades you've accrued thus far is a ridiculous waste and likely to get you killed. Soundtrack isn't exactly memorable, what passes for a "story" is a poorly conceived joke with no bearing on the game itself relayed in doggrel verse that's almost painful to listen to, graphics just feel amateurish...

The core ideas are fun enough that you probably won't feel cheated purchasing this. But do so only if desperate; there are better games here with more potential costing just as much or less. "Spelunky" rings a bell: If you haven't already purchased that one, there's no reason to buy this in preference.

99 Levels to Hell is a 2D randomly generated dual stick platformer. Left stick moves you, right stick is aim. You can of course mouse aim and use the keyboards. There is a jump button, a bomb button, a shoot button and an item use button. Everything is mapped to the shoulder buttons. Even with a controller, you still need to use a mouse for the menu.

You go through randomly generated levels killing monsters, collecting gold and find a key that will unlock a door to the next level. It is a good fun little game that I feel like I've played before. The game has charm and a sense of humor, coupled with enough red blood to literally paint every surface in the game. You'll find shop keepers along the way... some that weren't even supposed to be here today, that you can buy stuff from.

Ever play Spelunky? This is a Spelunky clone right down to the tutorial level with ghosts that will chase you if you take too long to complete each level. There are games that feel like other games. This is a clone if not stolen code. Is that a bad thing? No. Is this better than Spelunky? Eh yes at no. Sadly a game trying to be too much like Spelunky will never have a crown as grand as Spelunky, but this is still a fun little game. 99 Levels feels less deadly. There is no fall damage, there are no random spike traps on the floor or any enemies that pop out of objects when you open them with your gun.

99 Levels has casinos, and a wider color pallet with dark tones and well bright red blood. It is a good diversity here. It has treasure levels too. I think these are all steps in the right direction. Just not far enough. There is a chance here to expand upon things.

There is no carry function to pick things up and throw them such as princesses, rocks and keys. When you get a key, you just get it, you don't carry it and throw it. There seems to be no rope climb feature to throw grappling hooks and climb up. There are ladders though, and you don't climb ladders so much as float up them freely. While there are bomb walls, and shootable dirt walls, there are no webs, water or anything interesting like that. It just seems less than Spelunky. Less features, less controls, less price.

This game is a good start for any developer, but if you already have Spelunky, you probably don't need 99 Levels to Hell.

99 Levels to Hell really does explain this game. There are 99 levels and boy...is it hell...I found myself being extremly annoyed with the controls of this game from the get go. Platformer where you aim with a second analog stick? Took me a while to get a hang of it.

There is zero variety here either, the same enemies, the same weapons and items, all wearing very thin by the time you have played for over an hour.

The bosses are even worse, they litterally just stand there and do nothing.

I cannot recommend 99 Levels to Hell, to anyone.

"WELCOME TO THE 99 LEVELS TO HELL",ok got that out of my system and now on with the review. This is one game i was looking forward to when it was first announced and i must say that having play'd the final version i am not one bit dissapointed with the end product.
Ok graphics wise this game is really competent at what it set's out to do and the graphics style really does suit the game, the music is both dark and at times (especially when the ghosts appear) has a sudden urgency to it,the dialouge in game is also really good (what there is of it) and helps to give you some clue as to what is going on and the game play mechanics in game all really work well and if you die it wont be due to the game but your lack of either time playing the game (learning attack patterns and how the different weapons and power ups work) or concentration whilst playing (i know happened to me on one of the boss levels,my wife shouted "your foods ready" i looked away and said "Ok i'm coming in a moment" then i died ARRRRGGGHHHHH).
As you progress through the game you will learn what the various enemies do and how they attack (some on sight will hunt you down and others will float about whilst firing at you and yet others will get near you and then "BOOM" explode ECT) and as you watch and learn so you will get better at the game and not die so often, this is never more the case than when fighting against a level boss.
Some are rather easy and predictable and others are rather devious and not so predictable and yet when fighting against others the sheer number of on screen allies the boss has and can summon can be nothing short of an annoyance (trust me in a good "I HAVE TO BEAT THIS DAMN BOSS" sort of way) and also prove to (in some cases) be to much to deal with at times unless your tooled up.
Now this brings me to POWER UPS and the different character classes, there is 4 character classes to choose from which range from the "MAJOR" to the "DRAGON" with all the characters offering different weapons and therefore a choice of which to take into the game when you play (some are better suited to certain levels as the sniper gun fires one bullet at a time and the machine gun fires multiple times but seems to lack as much of a kick),all the characters bar the first one have to be found and set free from the cages they are in (with a bomb if you have one-if not find one as the more characters you have the easier the game will be).
Now on to power ups, they range from the usefull to the down right bizarre,my favorite power up is the (what i call) "DEMON UMBRELLA" this little demonic umbrella takes you from where you are right to the end of level boss and this is ok if your tooled up but not if your "NOT",having said that it gives you ample oppurtunity to test out the boss and learn a little of their attack patterns and how to deal with them (helped me on one occasion with an ♥♥♥ of a boss "DAMN YOU,YOU FLOATING EYE THINGY"),but by jumping like this you do stand a chance of missing out on leveling up your character and also not finding the elusive other characters.
The other power ups range from a torch (which helps in the dark-pretty useless really on most levels),fireball that floats around your character and fires out a fire ball every time you shoot your gun,ice ball which preety much does the same as the fire ball except its ice instead, the bubble gun which surrounds the enemy in a bubble and sends them skyward, the poisen arrow gun (which does exactally what it says on the tin),weapon strength power ups which power up the strength of your weapon (OMG I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT WAS OBVIOUS DUH) to other usefull and often weird and strange power ups.
When you do beat an end of level boss (comes around the 9th level mark of each seperate level) you will not have to start the game right from the begining like you do if you die before reaching and defeating said boss, thats why when you fight a boss your praying that you beat them so you dont have to start that level to get right back up to the boss again (thats where the "DEMON UMBRELLA" comes in handy),but defeating a boss feels just how it should ("HA HA HA HA HA i beat you,you mother...................." less of that language kids may be present) and gives you a sense of acheivement and the knowledge that your getting just that little bit better at the game.
So in closing i reccomend this game to anyone out for a good, challenging game that will test both your skills as a gamer and your patience as a gamer also ("AAAARRRRRGGGHHHH you bloody game, your cheating me i beat that boss WWWAAAHHH wheres my dummy") and at the price its at why are you waiting and if you do buy the game "WELCOME TO HELL BBUUWWWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA"

I thought about this one quite hard - and I've come to the realisation that I would recommend this game, with a couple of caveats:

- Do you like Roguelikes?
- Do you like Twinstick shooters?
- Are you a fan of THE METAL?

If a resounding 'yes' to all the above, then HECK YES, go get this immediately.

If not - I'd find it difficult to recommend, the controls are somewhat clunky, and the audio can get rather repetitive, and by the gods is it tricky to get into. But if you can put all that to one side, this is actually a fun little shooter game, and one I plan on finishing sometime. I managed to hit just over level 50 before I stopped playing.

Remember - this game is often in sales, and often less than a dollar. Grab it then and you won't be disappointed.

If you'd like a taster - I did a video series of the gameplay I managed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clh08lU3rCc

There are certain expectations one would get from a game titled 99 Levels to Hell. Things like the game’s ultimate destination, how many areas you need to clear to reach it, and maybe even the assumption of an overall theme. 99 Levels to Hell delivers on all fronts, but that’s just the start of the depth of content in this cartoonishly bloody, violent, randomized 2D action platformer. There’s enough going on in each level that it can actually take a bit to realize that 99 Levels to Hell has only one notable issue, and that’s a bad case of programmer art. Most enemies float or move with the bare minimum of animation, and while the art is serviceable, that’s the best that can be said.99 Levels to Hell is all about action, jumping gaps and gunning down hordes of enemies in the finest arcade traditions.99 Levels to Hell is a fun and bloody descent into the not-quite-bottomless depths, loaded with replayability and almost impossible to put down until the poor explorer has lost his last heart of health.

Rating 7/10

2d Sidescroller Action Rogue

The Good:
+ 2d sidescrolling action through 99 levels and 10 bosses. Levels have a time limit, spend too long in the level and multiple ghosts start to come into the level. Levels can have shops, elevators that can either send you further down or back up, slots for gambling gold you find, and portals.

+ Multiple characters that start out with their own weapons, however you can always switch weapons later on. You can only carry one weapon at a time so choose carefully.

+Different items and upgrade for weapons that can either be found or bought in shops.

+Cool Boss battles

+items are randomized in each level

+Easy achievements except for 1 (100 hours in dungeon)

The Bad:
- Their are a handful of levels that get re-used over and over again. After playing the game for a few hours you generally get a good sense of each level. Item randomization in the levels help to a degree but not by much

-Every 10 levels the game switches up the environment, this is good except its just a reskin of the textures, it adds some variety however the novelty wears off pretty quickly when you realize you are playing the same level that you played 6 floors up.

-Enemies change every 10 levels as well and most of them act exactly the same as the previous levels removing some of the challenge from the game. Essentially enemies are just reskined from previously levels.

-Some enemies are hard to see and blend too well in the background. I'm not sure if this was by design or by accident but it gets very frustrating when you loose health and you have no idea what hit you. Even worse, sometimes you will loose health exiting shops or other areas instantly because an enemy was right there and their is little you could do about it.

Despite its many faults I still had fun playing the game. The game has all the core elements of a good rogue like game albeit a bit on the easy side. Their is no denying that this feels like a poor mans spelunky but if you like rogue games then this is a good game to waste a few hours on.

Disregarding the small stuff, the one issue I have with this title is the diversity of levels. Just because a level is reskined from a jungle pattern into a mechanical pattern doesn't make a world of difference.
Still, a decent amount of fun for a couple of hours.

You know when youre walking outside, and you accidentally step in a puddle, and it seeps through to your socks? This game is more of a dissapointment than that.

Its spelunky with a metal and hellish theme......awesome!!

The game is really well done twinstick shooter with all the goodies of spelunky but with a awesome ost metel theme and creepy at time this is a indie game that you have to try if you have or plan on buying it's worth playing in my opinion and it will feel that rouge-like game style you are looking for so grab and play totally worth it!!!!
