This is a game based on the second world war, although there are bunch of mods where you can for example play in the first world war or create a country called Isis by tampering with the game files.

PROS:

-Good game conquered Sweden,Norway and Denmark with Finland (SUOMI KARJALA VIINA ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥).

-Play as the Third Reich aka germany and stop communism (also invade poland and kill some jews).

-You can choose to play as any country you want to.

CONS:

-The game has some problems with multicore cpu's, so it's best to limit the cpu affinity to one core from task manager while playing the game

-If you don't limit the cpu affinity to one the game will be slow and eventually will crash. NOTE: This has happened to me many times and it works fine when the affinity is one BUT this might not occur on your PC.

3/5 I would recommend this game, and play as Finland and create SUUR-SUOMI ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

I can't even get this game to start. I just bought the 4th of July package deal at 75% off for $11.24. Good deal if the game actually works. Installed it last night. Been spending 5 or 6 hours trying to get help from forums and the Paradox company website. No luck so far. How many more hours do I need to be frustrated and aggrivated?

I had proplems getting Age of Empires II to work too, a year ago, when I first bought the game.

Seems like Steam is in the habbit of selling problematic games and providing no support for them. No quality control. No tech support. Customers are left on their own to figure it out.

People shouldn't have to go through all this crap every time they buy a game. Games should just work after you buy them and install them. Is that too much to ask? If not, at least provide some support for them with links to patches and easy fixes. Customers shouldn't have to do searches and rely on other gamers who may or may not know what the heck they are talking about.

Steam SUX!

First sorry for my english. Sotto la recensione in italiano.

Hearts of Iron III is a 2009 strategic game on a large scale, the third representative of the paradox about World War II.
You are free to choose from hundreds of nations between 1936 and 1948.
The game is based on several levels: the army management, industrial production, technological research, diplomacy, espionage and politics.
The game is in real time, but you can pause when you want.

Pros
  • Not high hardware requirements
  • Low price
  • Multiplayer and coop
  • Cards
  • Some fantastic mod
  • Light download and occupied space
  • Excellent longevity
  • Once mastered becomes extremely rewarding
  • Wide range of nations
  • The whole world to conquer
  • Three major expansions

Cons
  • many dlc of dubious value
  • No workshops, cloud and achievement
  • Insufficient tutorial
  • Bugs and crashes
  • Graphics and sound
  • No demo
  • No linux and steam OS
  • Extremely difficult
  • Without mod loses points
  • Initial loading very long
  • Micromanagement
  • It requires much effort and time

Notes
  • Serious technical problems reported in some cases especially with mod
  • Easily activated cheats
  • Dlc Hearts of Iron III - German Sprite Pack in some bundle can not be detected
  • Mod downloaded via Paradox forum (it is a paradox policy)
  • The DRM free versions is present on other platforms
  • Not present holocaust management and other controversial parts
  • Suitable for all ages (no violence, at least not directly)
  • There are reported problems of downloading through Steam

With the release of the 4th chapter has lost relevance because of its extreme micromanagement
and not easy accessibility.
Strongly recommend modding because the basic version is not satisfactory.
Is present an active and expert community for the multiplayer, and the game gives wonderful emotions, if you enter in mechanical.
The air force in the game unfortunately has a secondary part, before you buy you should inform well for not abandon it at the first try (the fun-frustration border is very thin).
Compared to the 2nd chapter is divided into thousands of provinces, and the beauty of the game is to shape the story to their own will for example by bringing Italy into allies.
Probably many person will choose the major nations because they offer more tactical strategy, however for its size it remains a milestone of its period.

Rating 7.5 / 10 vote with mod 8/10

Fundamental dlc: Hearts of Iron III: Their Finest Hour, Hearts of Iron III: For the Motherland and Hearts of Iron III Semper Fi.

Purchase recommended under $ 5 price for the collection (note that the game was released in a bundle).

Mod recommended:
"BlackICE": vote 10 (exceptional mod that makes the base game magnificent and realistic, with thousands of events and dozens of new units and technologies,
fixes many bugs and balance the game).
"Random Map Generator and Scenario": 8 vote (generates dynamically nations and other for endless possibilities).

Pro
  • requisiti hardware non elevati
  • si trova a prezzo contenuto
  • multiplayer e coop
  • carte
  • alcune mod fantastiche
  • download e spazio occupato
  • longevità alle stelle
  • una volta padroneggiato estremamente appagante
  • vasta scelta di nazioni
  • l'intero pianeta da conquistare
  • le tre espansioni principali

Contro
  • molti dlc di dubbia utilità
  • tradotto in poche lingue (manca l'italiano)
  • no workshop e cloud e achievement
  • tutorial insufficiente
  • bug e crash
  • grafica e sonoro
  • non presente demo
  • linux e steam OS non presenti
  • estremamente difficile
  • senza mod perde punti
  • caricamento iniziale
  • microgestione
  • richiede molto impegno e tempo

Note
  • gravi problemi tecnici segnalati in alcuni casi soprattutto con mod
  • trucchi facilmente attivabili
  • dlc Hearts of Iron III - German Sprite Pack in alcuni bundle può non risultare presente
  • mod scaricabili tramite forum paradox (è una politica paradox)
  • è presente versione drm free su altre piattaforme

Grafica 6
Sonoro 6.5
Longevità 9
Giocabilità 8

Voto 7.5/10 voto con mod 8/10

Dlc fondamentali: Hearts of Iron III: Their Finest Hour, Hearts of Iron III: For the Motherland e Hearts of Iron III Semper Fi.

"Random Scenario and Map Generator": voto 8 (genere dinamicamente nazioni e altro per infinite possibilità).

Hearts of Iron III is like a once-beautiful Victorian mansion that's been abandoned for twenty years, and haunted. It's a beautiful, well put together game with a robust simulation, but it is aging poorly, and there's nothing Paradox can do about it, having somehow managed to lose the source code and with it, their ability to fix bugs. For instance, this fullscreen-only game has extreme difficulty making connections via multiplayer, crashes when you alt+tab, and frequently crashes in the middle of gameplay as well.

This, combined with a somewhat outdated, clunky interface and a very poor tutorial, results in a game where you can't tell what's a bug, what's a feature, and what's user error. And it's never going to get better. It can't. Paradox can no longer fix or develop this game, because again, they managed to somehow lose the source code.

I've never given a negative review for a Paradox game before. Do not let this dissuade you from buying games from them in the future. The bizarre and apparently unique blunder that led to HoI3's problems are very atypical for who are otherwise developers of VERY high-quality grand strategy games.

Get Hearts of Iron II or IV instead of III.

I really don't want to thumbs down this program, it would be amazing if it worked the way it's supposed to and had a better tutorial.

The game is really fun in a lot of aspects, but the constant requirements of supply as well as unpatched glitches really makes most missions completely not worth it whatsoever when stacking suddenly becomes an issue, ruining all of your plans, or when you have to spend 2 hours googling game mechanics while the enemy AI does everything absolutely perfecly, whereas if you entrust the AI to do anything at all other than resource management, you may as well resign and get it over with, as the Slider AI, combat AI, and convoy management AI are all basically braindead.

I find myself suffering many game breaking glitches like random CTDs or graphical bugs with counters in the midst of gameplay. I'll be there, using the battle plan tool to launch a full out assault on Canada as communist germany, or being nazi America taking over the western hemisphere to be rudely interupted by a CTD. ruining essentially everything I had been doing. Not to mention the huge variety of game breaking glitches that you have to trudge through files and notepads to fix.

I'm not saying the game isn't fun, it's a bloody masterpiece and I have spent many hours playing and enjoying the game, but it's just so high demand and just so frusterating to deal with. Without autosave, or saving daily, once you get a CTD, you can miss an entire ingame year of gameplay.

I find myself getting so frusterated at the constant glitches and the extremely unforgiving sense of supply management and all these little technicalities you have to follow or else this event won't activate, or this battle you're fighting will lose, and at times the obvious historical innaccuracies that I find myself wanting to play the game, but often leaving it alone as to avoid all the trouble that comes along with it.

I'd easily reccomend the game, but with the plethora of problems that it comes packaged with, I simply can't,

That doesn't mean in itself, there's nothing fun from it, or that the game is bad. It's excellently crafted. But the cons outweigh the pros. If you can deal with diving into files to fix problems, having to get DLCs for the game to be remotely enjoyable, and constant nagging technicalities overshadowing everything you do, then I would reccomend the game for you.

Otherwise, I simply can't.

It's a great game, but it's unpatched, buggy as hell, and too demanding.

I decided to sell my soul to the devil if he taugth me the game.

The devil appeared, sat down at my computer, and tried to learn the game.

The devil lost all his patience, and decided there where easier things to do, like learning quantum physics.

The devil attempted to leave, I told him he still had to teach me.

The devil gives me his soul and disappears.

666/10, would confund the devil again.

Possibly the most authentic, detailed and realistic grand strategy game you can get out there

Everything in this game screams detail and authencity

It has detailed pretty much everything, too many to list out

Only real con with the game other than a few in-game quirks and bugs
Expansion packs needed for complete experience, updates seem to be tied to the expansions (Semper Fi, For the Motherland, Their Finest Hour)

Some people say Hearts of Iron III isn't fun because of 'over-complicating' the game, but I would say that is exactly what makes the HOI series unique and fun.

*I've never played a Hearts of Iron before this*

When you put the time in this game, you will have a great experience. It has however some really annoying drawbacks.
Since HOI4 is just around the corner, you should get HOI3 on sale.

7/10

+ Amazing campaigns.
+ really long campaigns.
+ Settings for days (command structure, etc.)
+ Finally beating a major country is incredibly rewarding.
+ Great map.
+ So incredibly fun just to play this for hours.

- Hard to get into when you never played a hoi before.
- Sea invasions are a bit broken.
- Command structures are overwhelming.
- Surrounding the enemy is pretty much useless unless you outnumber them 1000000 to 1.
- When playing as the Soviet Union, the Allies don't do jack ♥♥♥♥.
- When playing as the Allies, the Soviet Union advances unrealistic fast rate. What makes intervention pretty much useless since they will crush the Axis all by them self without any ressistance.
- Operations just arent fun to make since you have to micromanage every attack.

Brutally difficult game, hard to learn, but once you get it, it's smooth sailing. Does have quite a few crashes every now and then. I highly recommend it to anyone interesting in WW2 who are looking for an in depth game. 8/10. You do need the major DLC to make it more playable. (For the motherland, Semper Fi, Their finest Hour)

Coming back to this from HOI 4 makes me really appriciate this game a whole lot more. There is something about it that feels dense, real and engaging. Not like a video game or a simulator but a real experience. Similar feeling towards the ARMA series. I have more memories of this game than I do most, which is odd... The failed landings on Ireland, the communist take over of the Americas and the Portuguese conquest of South America, all are very real in my head. I play other games and all of those experiences just mush together into a compact ball of video gamey fun. Which is fine and all ,but I don't remember them so well.

You have to love history to play history.
