"Showed at PAX East 2013 - Elegant platforming with a retro look."

“Just like the original, one of my favorite parts of the Mudds series are the little nuances that hearken back to the golden age of retro games — small graphical details that really show not only that the game was a labor of love, but that Renegade Kid actually played said retro games for inspiration. All of those details look even better in Deluxe, preserved in the new vibrant HD visuals — the same goes for the catchy chiptunes soundtrack (with all new music for the ghost levels), and deliciously retro sound effects.”

“I had great praise for this game before and so there is no doubt that I was going to hand it great praise once again. It is just as fun the second time around as it was the first time on the 3DS, with the original levels. The new levels and enhancements made it even more gratifying, and players don’t even have to wait long to experience the new ghost levels. As players beat an original level, the corresponding ghost level unlocks, giving them quick access to experience the spooky mudds.”
90% – Fanbolt

“Mutant Mudds Deluxe is the ultimate version of an already great game. Some tweaks to how it plays in addition to a fair amount of new content place it far above the original game. If you own the original but some things about it bothered you, give Deluxe a go. If you’ve never played the game, buy Deluxe as soon as possible. Mutant Mudds Deluxe is an outstanding throwback to another age, and it can’t be missed.”

A brilliant, nostalgic game rooted in the platformer era. Seeing as there are no Mario games on Steam, this game holds a special place in my part. Originally a 3DS Exclusive, the Deluxe version of the game was eventually ported to PC via Steam with Achievements and trading cards!

I originally played this on 3DS, before discovering that games are much cheaper on Steam. I devoured the Demo on 3DS (though even that took many hours), and felt a rush of nostalgia when I found it on Steam - and better yet, it was on sale!

With alternate levels as an accompaniment to the main story, and secret levels within the main story, this game has a lot of replayability. You can also buy weapons by collecting the coins in every level. The soundtrack is also great, making this game worth at least what I paid for it - $4.99 - if not more.

Best platformer i've played in a long, long time. The gameplay is great, the ost is amazing and the difficulty curve is just perfect!

Mutant Mudds is a very challenging game with steam trading cards, a good amount of secrets, and where is fun to get 100% achievements. What are you waiting for?

A great retro "12 bit" style game, tight controls , simple platforming + jetpack & shooting mechanics . lots of stuff to collect , hidden stages to find , secret characters hidden in some levels , unlock upgrades , etc
Some levels are super easy and others will probably make you punch a hole in your wall , thankfully there are checkpoints and you can take 3 hits before death .

there are hidden "v land" stages have a red color pallete , like a virtual boy (hence the V) and kinda messes your eyes up after a while , like a virtual boy ahah .
Also hidden "g land" stages have a grey/black color pallette , like an old gameboy. and "cga land" stages have a cga color pallette of old school DOS games.
These effects are really pretty cool and nostalgic , especially the challenging cga land stages

one of the more standout features is there are layers to the stages you can jump in between , usually 3 layers. while the effect is still pretty cool on pc/console , i think it was designed for the 3ds and the 3d effect looks much better on the nintendo 3ds

overall its feels like a polished , fun retro style platformer/shooter

So like yeaaah, Mutant Mudds... odd little title but defintely a great one for someone craving a dose of ultra precision platforming. At first the game feels really cumbersome and clunky because let's face it, it's not supposed to play like New Super Mario Bros... You won't be running at top speed and almost sliding off in to a chasm only to do a triple backflip in to a ground pound... nope, none of that here. You walk, you hover, you jump, you shoot... bout it.

This game is very... let's say, square.... or rather pixel perfect... everything works in blocks, rows and lines... so if you keep that in mind when you're traversing the trecherous one hit kill spike traps, you'll be better off. The game is intended as a grueling challenge for older children, around the age of like 10-12... and for someone of that age, I can see this being incredibly frustrating and they will surely deem this game unbeatable... but it's really not.

Don't expect "Impossible Game" or "Super Meat Boy" quality challenge here is basically what I'm saying. If you can tolerate playing most web based flash games for longer than 15 minutes, this game will proove only an above average challenge for you. You shouldn't at any point want to throw your controller at a wall... if you do, then you have no patience because that's all this game really requires.

Sure there's a time limit for speed running levels but that's more of a tacked on thing if you're craving more Mutant Mudds after you've collected over 4000 objects... and if you are, please seek some help. After the inital batch of normal stages and ghost stages I cringed at having to do 20 more stages with good ol' grannie but I actually found those stages the least frustrating after I had finished a few.

All in all the game is good, you can finish everything in roughly 5 to 6 hours which is decent for the price. Other less experienced platformers might take a bit longer but I can't see this game taking you more than 10 hours.

Side Note: There's an exploit where you can stand on the very edge of spikes if they're on a platform, so use that knowledge to your advantage if you're having trouble finishing some of the harder areas.

A great platform game that captures the feel of the genre classics. The music and sound effects are good. The level design is excellent. Any fan of Super Mario Bros would feel at home with this game. Give it a chance.

To start: I used to add a longer header to these reviews, but since it often made the reviews too long to submit, I've opted to leave it on my Backloggery. Shouldn't happen for this game, but I am nothing if not (mostly) consistent.

Gameplay: On its surface, Mutant Mudds doesn't seem too impressive. It's an indie platformer in the vein of the NES games which inspired it. After playing it through, I can definitely agree with the sentiment that the game isn't too particularly impressive. However, this game does manage to be a good bit of fun, with a surprising bit of challenge in some of the hidden levels, albeit also with a rather wonky difficulty curve.

This game is best described as a level-centric Metroidvania-lite. There's four levels per "world" and five worlds total; twice that if you count the alternate stages for these. Within these stages are hidden stages which are unlockable via the three powerups you collect throughout the game: a powerup that lets you hover for longer; a powerup that allows your shots to break down barriers (not doing any additional damage to enemies, oddly enough), and a powerup that lets you jump much higher than initially. You can only hold one of these powerups at a time, but there are secret characters which you can unlock that have all three at one time. These characters are used to unlock CGA stages, a more difficult series of levels which are used mainly for completion's sake and nothing else. This game is also something of a collect-a-thon, albeit a very mild one. There are 100 collectables per stage, amounting to 4,000 by the game's end. These aren't hidden in particularly challenging places, but they do force you to do some precarious jumps from time to time.

The main gimmick of the game is that there are three planes of stages. One thing that I learned was that this game was a port of the 3DS version, and after learning that, I can see exactly where the gimmick came from. While I don't own a 3DS and as such can't say for myself as to how good the 3D effect is, I can say that the game does an okay job of recreating that feeling of depth, even if some elements of the foreground do get in the way from time to time. It's not a dealbreaker, however. As for the stages themselves, they're fairly "rompy." I really can't think of any other way to describe them. There's no boss battles in this game, which rather surprised me considering that a boss fight could work with the control scheme, but again, it's not a big deal. My biggest complaint about the controls (and is a complaint shared by many others) is that movement is very sluggish and can potentially lead to a somewhat boring experience. I do wish your character moved faster, but that would also require changing a lot of the stage design.

At the end of the day, Mutant Mudds Deluxe isn't out to blow the hinges off of anyone's door. What it instead intends to do is give you a pretty good time. It did only take me just over five hours to 100% the game, and almost exactly the same amount of time for a person who is much better at platformers than me to 100% the game. Beyond that, I don't see much in the way of replay value. I don't know if I'll ever be coming back to this game, to be quite frank. I did have a good time, though, and I do feel like I got my $10 of value. 7/10.

Story: Nothing remarkable; I'll be skipping to Graphics.

Graphics: When you start the game, it launches in a window... with menus. In fact, things like screen resolution and control configuration aren't actually baked into the game, meaning that if you wanna change controls, you'll have to go into windowed mode in order to change your settings. A bit disappointing, but that would mainly be a niche issue if you ask me. Once you get that business sorted out, the game doesn't have any graphical issues whatsoever. As for the art design, it reminds me quite a bit of Wonder Boy's graphics. It of course comes down to how you feel about pixel art, but for my eyes, the game wasn't that bad. Animations are smooth, there's pretty good shading on the enemies, and it all has a pretty nice style. Good stuff all around. 4/5.

Sound: Again, this comes somewhat down to taste, as the soundtrack for this game is entirely chiptune music. It's not bad, but I don't really remember much of it, even after having just played it. As for the sound design, it's just some bleeps and bloops. Not really worth discussing all that much. Of course, there's no voice acting either, but did you really expect it? Pretty alright and nothing more on this front. 3/5.

Overall scores are: 7/0/4/3; cumulative score of 7.0/10. It's just a fun, simple little platformer that doesn't go too far beyond being fun or simple.

Good platformer with retro graphics. There is nothing special about this game. I like it, therefore I will recommend it. Just don’t expect rich story or some fancy new game mechanics.

Twenty years ago, we never would have guessed that today’s generation of consoles would embrace 8-bit side-scrolling platformers. With the release of titles like Terraria, however, this trend does not show any signs of slowing. As these games continue to grow in popularity, developers such as Renegade Kid are fusing the power of new hardware with older gameplay styles, resulting in fresh experiences such as Mutant Mudds Deluxe.

For those out of the loop, this is throwback 2D title with a unique twist. Unlike traditional releases in the genre, it requires you to leap into the background or jump out of the screen in order to explore different parts of each level’s environments. In some areas, there are as many as three planes layered on top of each other, offering a chaotic screen filled with moving enemies, platforms, and dangerous spikes.

The title tells the tale of an asteroid carrying a hoard of barbaric, brown monsters. Max, a blond-haired boy with a water gun and a jet-pack sets off to rid the world of the vermin by gathering star sprites. With the help of his Granny, the hero travels through five lands in his quest to eradicate the problematic pests.

Trying to wipe away the Mudds with a water gun is no easy task. There are several different kinds of enemies to attack, each with a different ability and movement pattern. Your weapon aims horizontally, has a limited range, and only fires the next water blast once the last one has disappeared. These limitations result in the cleanup operation being more difficult. You must attack or avoid moving Mudds while ducking through scrolling platforms, tight quarters, spinning hazards, and leaping fireballs.

Travelling through each level requires patience, timing, aiming, and trial-and-error. Each enemy travels on a predetermined path, and careful shooting, jumping, floating, and ducking is needed to avoid enemies and their attacks. You begin each level with three hearts, and halfway through there is a checkpoint where progress through the stage is saved. To add to the challenge, a time limit of four minutes is placed on each outing. Fortunately, it’s not too difficult to pass these quotas, but you will need plenty of skill to cross the finish line without losing a heart.

As you progress through the game, new levels and upgrades open up – assuming that you’ve collected the required number of star sprites. There are also Ghost Levels, which force you to slip past phantom Mudds that cannot be killed. The levels offer a real challenge, and avoiding the mutants requires real agility.

Upgrades, meanwhile, augment Max with the ability to shoot longer distances, add a longer lifespan to his jetpack, or the option to leap high into the air. You can only apply one of these upgrades at a time, but the enhancements allow you to complete levels much easier. You’ll also need to employ these additions to locate the hidden rooms in each stage.

Regardless of which power-ups you employ, this can be a challenging game – and depending on how tough you want it to be, there are ways that you can increase the difficultly. You can, for example, disable the abovementioned mid-level checkpoints, allowing you to choose whether you want to be forced to beat the entire level in one run or not.

The music and visuals are enjoyable throughout the game, although the song selection for each of the shadow levels does get a little stale after a little while. When jumping in and out of planes, it can be very chaotic, as the foreground remains visible while you play. This increases the challenge on some levels, requiring a much greater focus if you want to make it through unscathed.

There’s plenty more to do once the vermin have been scrubbed, too. Gathering all of the star sprites, all of the golden diamonds, completing the secondary levels, and the other special levels offers plenty for you to accomplish beyond the core campaign. Granted, it’s possible to finish the adventure in less than eight hours using the hardest settings – however, since so much of the game revolves around replaying the same levels multiple times, you may not be compelled to come back once you’re done. Furthermore, the conclusion of the adventure is lacklustre, forcing you to focus on the satisfaction that you obtain from finishing the levels rather than exciting cutscenes or plot twists.

Mutant Mudds Deluxe takes the old-school platforming formula and freshens it up with a unique twist. The dimension hopping hook augments a tactical layer to the traditional side-scrolling action, and the occasionally devilish difficulty will test your dexterity. While there’s a lot of content to get through, however, the adventure does get repetitive at times. Nevertheless, there’s not a whole lot of grime in this game – just good, clean fun.
