In Viscera Cleanup Detail, you step into the boots of a space-station janitor tasked with cleaning up after various horrific sci-fi horror events. Instead of machineguns and plasma-rifles, your tools are a mop and bucket. That hero left a mess, and it's up to you to deal with the aftermath.

Update v1.08 live!

Hey everyone!

After a good amount of time spent bug fixing, we've got a few very important, albeit uninteresting updates for you!

Firstly, I'd just like to mention a few important things.

A lot of work was put into improving network connectivity, as we're well aware of just how many people have had trouble with that. The problem is complicated, and we've always been trying to improve it, but had little success. We've never been able to do much about it. Mainly because we don't have access to that lower level of the game engine, so we can't get a good idea of where things are going wrong between game -> engine -> steam, and have no way to change that.

That being said, we did make a little progress, but I'm not sure how much difference it will make. That's why in this update there will be a small change that may make it suddenly work for you, make it break for you where it was working before, or simply do nothing, we can't say.

Also, you can now find Viscera Cleanup in the Steam Client's Server Browser too, which may help some people connect.

No one wishes network connections would work more than me, but it's just not that simple, and sadly we've done our best.

Secondly, the other main issue a lot of you have had has been vanishing items when using the Janitor Trunk. A truly frustrating thing. Good news is I think we've fixed that after writing an entirely new system for it, one I believe will be very reliable.

Thirdly, we're easing off active development now, and have been since v1.07 but forgot to mention it in announcements. This just means we don't plan to add anymore features to the game, but will continue to do bug fixes, update the OSX version, and generally support the community.

We're moving onto another project now, one that holds promise, and hope to have a releasable version sometime in the future, so stay tuned for that!
That being said, we may very well make more stuff for VCD down the line if the mood strikes us.

Right, that's that wordy bit out of the way, onto the change-log!

  • Added Reverb processing to Incubation Emergency.

  • Overhauled the trophy collection and trunk transfer systems, hopefully resolving the duplication and vanishing item issues once and for all.
  • Fixed players being awarded for entering numbers into the incident report form counter boxes when those items don't even appear in the level.
  • Fixed "Pedestrian" achievement being updated on every bloody player footstep; now does it every 30.
  • Fixed worker heads from Incubation Emergency and Frostbite not counting toward "Head Hunter" achievement.
  • Fixed levels without mess --such as workshop level "Sanitation Training"-- from causing radical completion scores for players, potentially firing them.

  • Added Viscera Cleanup to the Steam Client Server Browser.
  • Made several experimental changes that 'may' improve network connectivity.
  • Fixed clients' Always Run setting being overridden by the server, resulting in very "steppy" movement.

    House of Horror:
  • Made the Woodchipper kill clumsy players.
  • Made Jacko Lanterns cause the fleshy Woodchipper grind-sound, and not the metallic one.

    Santa's Rampage:
  • Fixed full elf corpses being oddly offset in the level.

  • Added support for creating custom punchout definitions; allows you to decide what counts as mess and what notes to receive. You can now create entirely new variations.
  • Light Bulb mountings can now be toggled on and off by Kismet.
  • Added Sand-Trap collision object to GP_Digsite
  • Added four TGA files to the game directory that can be used as Level Preview Image templates.

And there we have it, thanks everyone and enjoy!

Updated to v1.075

We've all been down and out with flu the last two weeks, hence the delay, but we have a small update this week to fix a couple issues. Read on!

  • Fixed glitchy Medkit on the wall near bin machine in Incubation Emergency.
  • Changed average length estimate for Incubation Emergency from 2 hours to 3 hours.
  • Fixed "Military" being a valid answer for Incubation Emergency's punchout report forms, as there was no military presence.

  • The "Secret Item" that burns and melts stuff now also burns Creep and Biomass.
  • Fixed mouse cursor being frozen, usually upon entering the "Options Menu".
  • Fixed P.I.Ds with random names coming out blank on the punchout report forms if the P.I.Ds are from a loaded save-game.

  • Fixed Debriefing screen stamp showing "Granted" in the event that you make a truly terrible mess, instead of "Company Liquidated".

    Shadow Warrior:
  • Shadow Warrior Briefcase lid no longer gets duplicated upon returning it to the office.

Have a good weekend everyone!

“You know what I really love about violence? Dealing with the consequences! That’s why I’m so excited to see that Viscera Cleanup Detail, the space station janitor simulation, is now available on Steam Early Access.”

“By setting its mundane stall in the days after events that would be taken oh-so-seriously in another game, Viscera Cleanup Detail manages to be morbidly hilarious without ever telling a single joke.”

About This Game

Disaster! An alien invasion and subsequent infestation have decimated this facility. Many lives were lost, the facility was ruined and the aliens were unstoppable. All hope was lost until one survivor found the courage to fight back and put the aliens in their place!
It was a long and horrific battle as the survivor dueled with all manner of terrifying life-forms and alien mutations, but our hero won out in the end and destroyed the alien menace! Humanity was saved!

Unfortunately, the alien infestation and the heroic efforts of the courageous survivors have left rather a mess throughout the facility. As the janitor, it is your duty to get this place cleaned up.
So grab your mop and roll up your sleeves, this is gonna be one messy job.
Today, you're on Viscera Cleanup Detail!

Key Features

  • Janitorial Simulation - Step into the boots of a space-station sanitation technician and deal with the horrific aftermath of a sci-fi horror event. Blood, viscera, spent cartridges, worker bodies and other messes litter the facilities.
  • Clean - It's your job to clean up the mess, so clean it up you shall! Use your trusty mop, gloves, dispenser machines, plasma laser and sniffer tool to help you get all that blood out of the floor and off the ceiling! You can even try and punch-out if you think you've done your job.
  • Sandbox Gameplay - Don't want to clean? Just want to make more of a mess and play around with the physics? Go ahead! You can save your game as well; that's kind of us!
  • Multiplayer - You can even enlist some friends/coworkers to come and help you clean up (or make even more mess). Split-screen co-op is available too!

Buying Viscera Cleanup Detail also gets you our spin-off titles, 'VCD: Shadow Warrior' and 'Santa's Rampage' free!
Santa's Rampage comes included in the main game download AND as a standalone copy you can use to connect with others who only own Santa's Rampage.

A ridiculous way to explore the aftermath of the many sci-fi type disasters we've all played in other games.

As an English lit major I appreciate this game a lot because it has taught me much about one of my career prospects.

Also, playing Gears of War will never be the same again.

Neat and somewhat silly game. This feels like a somewhat serious parody of all those space marine shooters. It's somehow kind of refreshing.

Whoever would've guessed, before this game ever came out, that a janitoral simulation could be so damn fun? Certainly not me.

This game gives me a whole new appreciation for real life janitors. They are the unsung heroes, folks. Seriously. If you see one in real life, be glad that they are willing to do a job (for crappy pay I might add) that the majority of us wouldn't want to do, and treat them kindly.

Anyway, you can't go wrong with this game. Single-player is fine, but it's more fun with other people.

If you have OCD, then you will worship this game! In fact, you will probably cry every time you leave your house because you will miss this game when you're out! If that does happen, then you should not buy it because I don't want you to cry. :(

Living in the day and age where brutal gore filled shoot-em-up games are common. From large scale battles, to mass homicides leaving mutilated corpses behind. In those games, the bodies just stay there and we progress on with the game, never really stopped to think.... whos gunna clean this ♥♥♥♥ up.
Well thats where Viscera Cleanup Detail shines! Spend hours cleaning up after the horrific murders, accidents, mutations and mutilations. Each level walking into another scene of just dismembered humans and other monsters, thrown about with their insides skewn everywhere.
Burn all the bodies, stack all the crates, mop up the floors! Even make a bucket pyramid. Viscera cleanup detail is even better with a friend! You and your friends can listen to the royalty free weird retro punk music provided via the radio. Dont like the music? Burn the radio too!
Everything in viscera is just pure fun and amazing.... Until you knock over the bucket. ♥♥♥♥ you for knocking over my buckets.

Play with a couple friends, I promise you will be coming back for more. The most bizarely satisfying game in my library... essentially the only thing I play on a regular basis anymore. A triumph of the medium.

Weirdly addictive. Granted I haven't even gotten through half the levels but its pretty interesting being in the obviously influenced environments and its filled with tons of easter eggs throughout (some more literal than others!).

It isn't a particularly challenging game if you pay attention but you can still die and you can fail levels quite easily if you dont clean up well enough. It kept me entertained for a fair few hours and I hope to have time to go back and do some more at some point!
