In Viscera Cleanup Detail, you step into the boots of a space-station janitor tasked with cleaning up after various horrific sci-fi horror events. Instead of machineguns and plasma-rifles, your tools are a mop and bucket. That hero left a mess, and it's up to you to deal with the aftermath.

V0.44 update live!

Greetings everyone!

This week's update brings with it a funky radio at last! We've also added some more janitor variations and a few fixes. Read on!

Changelog:

    Maps:
  • Fixed invisible footsteps appearing in Gravity Drive and Zero-G Therapy.
  • Fixed Gravity Drive and Zero-G therapy harming the punchout score even if the correct gravity is active.

    Game:
  • Added the Janitor's personal "Big Banger" radio/boombox sound system of pure evil!
  • Added another 3 Janitor Head skins and a new Body skin!
  • Made Lanterns toggleable by holding down the 'Grab' key.
  • Fixed blood splats of different colors caused by footsteps or the mop not being saved.
  • Fixed Trophies not being deleted from office when fired.
  • Fixed PIDs not saving employee names and coloring between sessions.

    UI:
  • Fixed office not displaying the correct completion time on the Report screen.

    Workshop:
  • Creators will now have to specify the punishable gravity volumes in their map info.
  • Unsubscribed Workshop items will now be removed.

We're still busy working on getting the Mac build behaving. Really hoping I can get something out for it this coming week. We'll also be looking into merging the spin-off titles into VCD in some way as well.
The Robot map is going well too, when we get time to work on it. It'll be quite something when it's done >:) Other elements, such as fixes, the UI overhaul and more achievements, will start making an appearance soon as well. We're getting close to a 1.0 release!

Let us know what you think of the update. Cheers!

Update v0.435 live!

Hey hey!

*EDIT* The Report Form screen in the Office could be broken... Oh dear! We'll see if we can get it sorted soon!
*EDIT 2* Alright, updated again with fixes!

Another week, another update; hooray! Mostly just fixes and stuff, especially for the Gravity Drive map.

Changes:
Maps:

  • Fixed Gravity Drive problems, including Airlock, lift and gravity. [Will only work for new sessions]
  • Added Notes to Gravity Drive level.
  • Added Stacking areas to Gravity Drive level.
  • Private Game is now on by default [Anyone who wants to host a public game must now un-check the box under the rules menu]
  • Trophies taken to the office are now stored in a new save file. Makes it safe to clear the office save data, and it safeguards against corruption from updates.
  • Added a screen to the office where you can view all your punchout report forms.
  • Added an Achievement for completing 'Gravity Drive'

As usual, plenty more changes coming up. We've got the major new map still in the works (it'll be the last 'big' map), the radio and assorted tunes I'm making, more janitor customization, oodles of fixes and so on!

Seeya next week, or the next, or something (depending on the additions)!

“By setting its mundane stall in the days after events that would be taken oh-so-seriously in another game, Viscera Cleanup Detail manages to be morbidly hilarious without ever telling a single joke.”

About This Game

Disaster! An alien invasion and subsequent infestation have decimated this facility. Many lives were lost, the facility was ruined and the aliens were unstoppable. All hope was lost until one survivor found the courage to fight back and put the aliens in their place!
It was a long and horrific battle as the survivor duelled with all manner of terrifying life-forms and alien mutations, but our hero won out in the end and destroyed the alien menace! Humanity was saved!

Unfortunately, the alien infestation and the heroic efforts of the courageous survivors have left rather a mess throughout the facility. As the janitor, it is your duty to get this place cleaned up.
So grab your mop and roll up your sleeves, this is gonna be one messy job.
Today, you're on Viscera Cleanup Detail!

Key Features

  • Janitorial Simulation - Step into the boots of a space-station sanitation technician and deal with the horrific aftermath of a sci-fi horror event. Blood, viscera, spent cartridges, worker bodies and other messes litter the facilities.
  • Clean - It's your job to clean up the mess, so clean it up you shall! Use your trusty mop, gloves, dispenser machines, plasma laser and sniffer tool to help you get all that blood out of the floor and off the ceiling! You can even try and punch-out if you think you've done your job.
  • Sandbox Gameplay - Don't want to clean? Just want to make more of a mess and play around with the physics? Go ahead! You can save your game as well; that's kind of us!
  • Multiplayer - Note: MP is still being worked out and may have issues still.
You can even enlist some friends/coworkers to come and help you clean up (or make even more mess).

The easiest way to describe this game is as a toy. Its quite serious about what it is but not in a competitive way but rather that cleaning up blood is hard. Its even more difficult when given various body parts to incinerate, tnt to handle safely(or not), and a whole ton of other crap.

Somehow I've managed to spend more time playing this game and cleaning up a virtual mess for a longer period of time than I've actually spent cleaning IRL.

You know.... I should have wrote a review for this 10000000000000000000000000000000 years ago.

Here it goes.

Your a janitor who works on space stations, remote locations, and other futuristic places. Your there to cleanup all that ♥♥♥♥ from everyone dieing in terrible events. Alien infestation, a evil artifact, mutants, and a bunch of evil events BEFORE you even got there. So you walk in after the horrible battle/murderfest and clean it up. You burn the bodies, remove the scorch marks, burn the bullet casings, stack the boxes that fell over, file reports on everything you saw, work togheter in multiplayer, and more shiz.

There is a functional lift now to get blood on the ceilings, dynamite, shovels, brooms, mops, some crazy disintegration gun that burns everything, and your trusty sniffer tool to find blood/junk.

Would not recomend if your not a badass who can handle being a janitor of this scale.....

Seriously..... this game is great!

Ever wondered what it's like to be the poor schmuck who has to clean up after Doomguy? Now you can find out!

This game is really relaxing and very satisfying when hours of cleaning eventually result in a space that is completely immaculate. I wonder why I don't get the same kind of satisfaction cleaning up in real life...
This game is early access, so they regularly release updates for it, and it's always fun trying out new content. It also has workshop support, so when you get tired of the stock maps, there are player creations out there for you, though I can't vouch for their number. Sometimes, I have a difficult time finding the last little meat chunk or soda can or blood spat hidden in a dark high corner of the ceiling. That hardly ruins it, but maybe RS will make this easier in the future.

As for the multiplayer, you don't have to deal with port forwarding like you do in santa's rampage. MP is handled through steam, so you can easily join your friends, or complete strangers. Let me tell you, you don't know your friends until they trek bloody footprints right across the floor you JUST finished mopping. Repeatedly.

_________

Let me tell you a little story about a multiplayer session I hosted with a friend of mine. We were playing the map Unearthly Excavation. My friend sees a "sarlacc pit" in the ground and jumps in it without a second thought. He died.

He also found some explosives. Apparently, he couldn't light them, but not to be defeated he put it in the incinerator. Unfortunately, he forgot that he was supposed to run away. He exploded into little bits.

While this is going on, I'm trying to clean up a mess that only gets messier with each water bucket carelessly spilled. That's when my friend found some explosives near me. Since I was away from the incinerator, he couldn't light them, but then I found and lit a flare. I told him I had an idea and dropped the flare next to the explosives, lighting them. I ran away, he didn't. I blew him up and got an achievement for it. My victory was short lived as I didn't realize there were more explosives that the blast had triggered. I didn't survive that one.

When I came back and tried to clean up the mess we made, my friend asked me how to light the flares, and I told him he had to bang them against the wall (which is the truth). A part of me was wondering why he had asked, until he came running over with something that was lit. I almost immediately knew to run the hell away, but my desire to live gave way to caution, as instead of running, I looked behind me to make sure the water bucket was not there. Ultimately, we both exploded, and my desire to not make a bigger mess ended up doing just that.

We could not stop laughing.

9.9/10

Why should you clean your room? Why should you collect boring bottles and clothes if you can play Viscera Cleanup Detail? It's the most intense Alien Invation War Clean Simulator! BE the man who clean up all the bloody ♥♥♥♥ and burn body parts. You can pick up Alienasses, you can have a freaking LASORRRRGUN a god damn MOP, seriously it's even more fun if you build up your ultimate super terror clean-squad with some friends! Are you tired of pain in your back because of the cleaning, so get this game and cleaning is enjoyable. Totally worth every Penny!

(Thinking:) "How interesting could cleaning up to be?!" "Who wants to clean up his own room and have fun within?!" (:End)
I do it only, because there are other Persons, who wants to be in the house, too. This Game has other perspectives than I have, while I'm cleaning my house. (Beside: My house doesn't look like this in any ways.)

This game is well commented, easy to learn, how to use it. (If someone doesn't know, where to put all the mad stuff, the oven is always a good choice. :))

This game is for those, who dose want to have some fun, and for the others, who are angry about something. You can clean up normally, or you can make more damage, than there was before.
The machines, which gives you the cleaning material don't make difference between cleaning up and blowing up. So take care by getting your cleaning material.

Nearly 10,- € isn't too much for this game.
RuneStorm get on working with this game. It's kinda cool.

Before I start reviewing the game let me tell you; if you can't stand really grueling, unreliable and awkward tasks then you should probably not buy this game. VCD is all about doing chores you would normally hate and can be really punishing if you aren't careful or wise on your decisions.

With that said, this game will be a fun and challenging experience for those who like hygiene. You have multiple and versatile tasks such as cleaning blood and soot stains, repairing bullet holes and picking up shell cases, restocking medkits, taking out the trash, stacking objects, filling incident reports, etc. The last two are optional but will award you as the Employee of the Month as long as you did the previous tasks adequately.

To ensure the game isn't repetitive and boring some of the maps come with unique tasks and gimmicks. For example: 'Hydroponic Hell' requires you to dispose of weeds and replant the pots with the desired flora, 'Unearthly Excavation' comes with Sarlacc pits that you need to bury and can be feed with viscera if you want to, 'Zero-G Therapy' and 'Gravity Drive' have airlocks and the ability to turn gravity off.

If you like reading then every map comes with notes and datalogs of the deceased workers, they inform you on what the company was working that could lead to such a bloody end. The player also has some form of backstory: You are the replacement of a previous janitor that went psychotic, Bob. He has been on most of the facilities you clean and you can find notes of his misadventures to keep you motivated.
Like stupid and wild physics? Well if you push this game's engine you can go flying anywhere like if you were playing Garry's Mod. This will get better if you play on multiplayer where you can skyrocket with your partner!

All this sure sounds painful but don't worry, the experience of being a janitor is quite relaxing and you will train your patience. With every device randomly deciding to malfunction by dispensing viscera or getting jammed, your clumsiness leading to spilled buckets or broken lanterns that start a fire and finally you end up going insane just like Bob... the life of a janitor sure is beautiful.
But really, if you are still unsure that you can stand all this punishment then get yourself a friend to play with. As always: The more the merrier and the more chances you will make a bigger mess.

So what about replay value? Normally every official map will leave you with something like 28 hours tops but there are players that have more than 100 hours on record including me. You have speedrun mode where your objective is to clean the level on a par time, a level editor and workshop support. And you also get a free copy of the two side projects/spin-offs: VCD: Shadow Warrior and VCD: Santa's Rampage.

Are you afraid because you have OCD? Don't worry, players have claimed that it makes the experience better and I myself can confirm that's true, because I used to have OCD when I was a child.

Overall the game has a great concept and right execution, with good developers in touch with their community and this one being helpful with reporting bugs and helping each other.

So grab your mop and get to work because that floor is not going to clean itself. And don't you even think of leaving the door of the incinerator open again when you clock off BECAUSE YOU WILL BE FIRED.

You think your parents are disappointed when you waste your life playing video games now? Just wait until you see how disappointed they are when you waste your life playing a video game that simulates being a janitor, while sitting in a messy room in real life. Soul crushing disappointment...

Also, this game is obsessive compulsive crack. It's challenging if you approach it as a puzzle game and goofy fun if you approach it as a physics simulator. A lot of credit should given to the developer for the attention to detail they put into creating messes that look real and tell a story.

I haven't tried coop yet, but I'm guessing there's a lot of fun to be had there.

Did you play DOOM when it was released in the 90s? What about the original Half-Life or Unreal? Did you ever wonder who the heck's gonna clean up after these heroes?

The answer has finally been provided by the developers of VCD, and the answer --- is you.

There is no story. There is you. There is a mop. There is a bucket of water. You have no idea who is responsible for the carnage; you only know it's your task to clean up after it.

For such a strange idea for a game, the developers have really outdone themselves in my opinion. They have taken an idea that likely only tugs at the corner of the minds of .01% of the total FPS-gaming population and made a game out of it. They've made a game that seems incredibly boring actually fun.

As a Janitor for the Viscera Cleanup Detail company, each facility you visit must be painstakingly mopped; all the trash must be picked up; and all the body parts must be incinerated. How you complete this task is up to you, but that facility had better be spotless when your supervisors arrive, or you risk losing your job (and that's actually an Achievement).

After completing a facility, you return to your "office," and can read reports on your progress. These reports vary from employee commendations to tongue-in-cheek company newsletters, and really add to the experience. You are also able to take "trophies" with you should you so choose by placing them in the blue trunk that you take with you to each job.

People who don't enjoy ironic humor, or never played an FPS, should stay well away. But if you love watching the gibs fly on any contemporary FPS game; or even enjoyed the pixelated trips down Memory Lane of DOOM or Duke Nukem 3D; or even the bump-mapped polygons of Unreal and Half-Life, this is a must-have in your collection. You already blew the place to smithereens; didn't you mom teach you pick up after yourself?
