1.26 beta balance patch, feel free to opt-in

There are more details here:

http://positech.co.uk/cliffsblog/2016/05/19/new-beta-balance-patch-for-democracy-3/

But basically we are trying a new 'beta balance patch' for the game that introduces a whole bunch of changes to the simulation which we think makes the game better balanced, more accurate and more fun. Here are the changes:

Version 1.26
============
1. Unemployment now contributes towards obesity
2. Increased impact of car usage on traffic congestion
3. Increased base likelihood of a teacher shortage.
4. Unemployment now reduces the chance of a teacher shortage.
5. University Grants now increase the chance of a teacher shortage.
6. Reduced impact of CCTV on Armed Robbery.
7. Added impact of low inequality on Armed Robbery.
8. Changed equation for GDP impact on Alcohol Consumption to be non-linear.
9. Added impact on doctors and teachers strikes from trade union membership
10. Adjusted impact of state school funding on teachers strikes.
11. Added effect of wages on Teachers & Doctors Strikes.
12. Added effects of science funding and the environment to contagious disease.
13. Arts subsidies, Bus subsidies and community policing now reduce unemployment.
14. Adjustments to triggers for various events.
15. Increased impact of refugee crisis event.
16. Effects of corporate exodus event worsened.
17. Increased impact of Unemployment on CrimeRate.
18. Impact of religion on antisocial behaviour now linked to membership, not frequency.
19. Unemployment now linked to antisocial behaviour
20. Trade union and Socialist group memberships now contribute towards general strike.

You need to opt-in to the beta (right click the games name on steam no password...) right now to see the changes.

Please note this is currently windows english version only. Let us know what you think...

Ce spun criticii

“Apparently somewhere between the genuine bona fide electrified six-car monorail, the prostitutes and the land mines, I lost the support of the electorate.”
PC Gamer

“I returned to Democracy 3 in an attempt to put right the wrongs of my previous administration. On my first visit, I broke Britain, crushing its culture and creating a country reminiscent of Clockwork Orange, filled with gangs and ultraviolence.”
Rock Paper Shotgun

“Positech has made, I believe, one of the fullest real-world governance simulation games ever conceived. It’s engaging, it’s self-aware, and, at times, it’s funnier than anyone might have expected”

Despre acest joc

Have you ever wanted to be president? or prime-minister? Convinced you could do a better job of running the country? Let's face it, you could hardly do a worse job than our current political leaders.

Crime, Unemployment, National Debt, Terrorism, Climate Change...Have you got the answers to the problems that face western industrialized nations? Here is your chance to find out...

An entire virtual country

Democracy 3 simulates the motivations, loyalties and desires of everyone in the country. A custom-designed neural network is used to model individual voters, each which varying memberships of voting groups, political parties and pressure groups. Each voters income is modeled, along with their levels of complacency and cynicism. This is the most sophisticated political strategy game ever created.

Unique user interface

Despite being vastly detailed under-the-hood, Democracy 3 has a unique user interface that makes visualizing the connections between laws, policies, voters and situations easy. A simple iconic-based view of your countries issues allows you to 'drill-down' through all the relationships between policies and voters to quickly analyze the impacts of your decisions. Your trade policy may affect GDP, which will affect unemployment, which will effect poverty, and thus crime, leading to a change in tourism, which affects GDP...

Complex simulated voters

Each individual voter is a mixture of a subset of the 21 different voter groups represented within the game. They might be a young, wealthy, liberal socialist commuter, or a retired conservative religious capitalist, for example. Not only this, but the extent to which they identify each of those groups is both variable, and can be affected by your policies in the long term. Convert your country to religion, or atheism, to capitalism, or socialism by careful and nuanced adjustment of your policies and laws over time. A 'focus group' feature lets you look at individual voters and see exactly how they came to a decision to vote for you (or not!).

Mod Support

Democracy 3 is very configurable and trivial to mod. It also has steam workshop support, for easy installation and browsing of modded content. Want to mod the game yourself? no problem, you need zero coding experience, just a spreadsheet program or a text editor, and we have a full comprehensive modding guide available here:
http://www.positech.co.uk/democracy3/modding.html
Modders can easily edit the policies, add new ones, change the way objects affect others, create entirely new countries, situations and even re-write the entire economic and political model. Everything is editable and accessible.

I want to love this game but it has obvious bias built in. Liberalism is automatically measured as positive and Conservatism is automatically measured as negative. I am use to this in all forms of my entertainment as disappointing as it is, but in a game BASED on such idiologies, its just not entertaining.

Crank up sales tax to 50% and repeal all others? Move the USA Federal Budget from red to black? Close all the airports to lower polution? If you want to go nuts, you can. There are several mods available with more policies and instructions to create your own.

The main object of this simulation is to get re-elected. The policies enacted truly focus on the approval of a group and the amount of membership in that group. For example, giving a tax break for urban farms will increase the membership in the "Farmers" group and their approval.

There is not an explicit explination on why the creator of the game chooses the relationships of policies to changes in the simulation, but *most* do make common sense. I'll list the common complaints later.

This is a fasinating game with one of the best government simulators I've yet seen. While it does not explore the "balance of power" between legislative, executive and judicial, it shows the maCssive effect that goverment policies can have on the daily lives of the citizens.

Here are some of the main "balances" that the game explores, with the goverment's budget as an aspect in all of them.
-Capitalism vs the enviroment, disadvantaging the poor, taxation and liberal socialism
-Healthcare, is it a right or a privalage?
-Welfare vs comfortably unemployed
-Foreign Policy (the game is suprisingly light on this though)
-Immigration control and liberal membership/approval
-Firearms control and health/crime

It goes on and on. If you're looking for a complex challenge and want to understand goverment better, you should experience this game.

Democracy 3 is an original and intruiging game that you don't often find in strictly point-and-click games these days. Your decision making as a country leader can have great and widespread consequences or benefits. The game lets you run a country however you like, making decisions on political subjects especially as we are experiencing them now in the real world. The cause and effect system is very extensive, although some political topics seem to have odd, nonexistant, or arguably incorrect effects in the network.

Overall I've found this game challenging and fun to play. You may find the campaign somewhat short and limited, but the user modding commuity is strong and still providing entertainment.

[Note: I have played many hours of this game, but Steam Offline doesn't record it.]

I bought this game, as I am extremely frustrated with the current political situation, and wanted to see if there was some sort of simcity/football manager-esque political management game just to play around and test my political idealogies.
Obviously I didn't expect anything too realistic nor did I expect a game to solve my real life political issues.

With Democracy 3 I kind of got what I wanted. It's a fun game and in a way it does help to broaden your views a little when you see a decision and it's backlash/result. However my main issue with this game is how limited the policies and scenarios are. Don't get me wrong there's a lot to this game, it's got a bit of a learning curve due to just how much there is to edit and keep on top of, but once you get into the swing of things such as changing/introducing policies and editing taxes, you're pretty limited by what you can do. There's not enough policies to choose from to implement (only about 1-2 dozen per category) and some are very limited, you can only either legalise something or ban it, there's no middle ground which is a bit frustrating. So you can't for example made alcohol illegal under 18 but legalise it to 16 when bought with an 18 year old (legal in the uk Irl within restaurants etc).

You also can't do things such as implement policies to better utilise the huge unemployment problem in the game. Pretty much any change you make will result in increases of unemployment, yet aside from removing any technological innovation and human rights laws there's no way to create schemes to put them in work etc.

One other frustration with the game is just the lack of diversity in extreme reactions by the public. For instance. if you do anything to ♥♥♥♥ off the capitalists (which pretty much happens every game) you'll always be assassinated. There's no variation. It might be nicer if sometimes instead of assassination things went wrong in different ways, such as all the capitalists just moving to other countries leaving your country with no investment or corporation tax.

I really like this game a lot and would recommend it to anyone interested in buying it. But unfortunately once you play it once you've pretty much got all you can get from it. I have played it a few times through now and every single time the game has gone in the exact same way and I've been assassinated by the same people. I wanted to try and experiement with running some 3rd world countries such as Africa but the game doesn't have such countries available, only the US,Canada, Australia and Uk. So there's not really any diversity. (I see there is a standalone addon for Democracy: Africa but that's a lot of money to play the same game in another place).

I kind of wish you have more options on how your country is when you first take control of it too. You can pretty much only toggle amount of relogiousness, earthquakes, and tornadoes. Where are the options for level of homelessness, crime, capitalists, average age of voters, etc?

I really feel like this game needs a lot more in terms of choice and content and I really hope Democracy 4 brings this.

[Edit: total rewrite]

While I like the update, I'm unimpresed at how I had to go and manually check all Democracy files were gone before I could FINALLY get the game to work.
Also, that's really soured me trying to get back into the game again, so for now, I don't recommend it.

A strangely addicting game, if I'm to be honest. The UI is nicely done, and while the music doesn't really vary, it is amazing at capturing the mood and intent of the game. This genre is always at a disadvantage when it comes to scope, but this game comes the closest to simulating the real decisions made at the highest levels of government. In playing this game, bear in mind that it was not developed with a Call Of Duty-esque budget. Do that, and you'll certainly come to appreciate the game as I have.

Population is fixed no matter what you do.
Same with global economy, it works independed of your actions.
Until these two bugs are fixed, it's somewhat unplayable. Well, you could try to build a society, sure, it would work, but eventually enthropia will eat your budget and you run out of policies. Closer to the end the market meltdowns becomes regular affair, ruining your economy. The game either requires interactions with other countries or removing 'globality' at all.

And somehow rising education & technology leads to crisises which is completely unrealistic.

A fun political game for politic-nerds?

  • Rock solid game
  • 144hz support and nice looking charts, layout, good design, etc
  • Fun variety of different political philosophies and policies
  • This game kept me playing for hours
  • Workshop has some cool add-ons

My chrome browser auto-loads realclearpolitics.com everytime its launched. If you don’t follow politics I don’t know that this game will be enjoyable for you. The fact is, the game is easier if you intuitively know what “biofuel subsidy” or “private school vouchers” are.

I would also say that the game is difficult. However, before starting a game you may reduce the difficulty. If you turn off assassinations the game becomes much easier and allows you to focus in on the policy.

At first I felt like the game forced me to play left, socialist. That’s not accurate, as a libertarian-leaning-conservative (right party for non-usa readers), I found my games always playing on the right side of the spectrum. Sure, I might subsidize the **** out of mass-transit to try to fix one of the “problems”, but overall I can’t help but gravitate towards my own belief of what government should do.

As a sim, the game puts you in charge of running the country like a business. This will cause you, or at least it did me, to abandon your precepts. I don’t believe government ought to tax behaviors like smoking; yet in the game they present a big red colored problem of asthma affected heavily by smoking. So to “beat” the game or solve this issue I tax the crap out of smoking. I don’t care if people want to get sick from smoking, and i certainly don’t think the government should be meddling in it.

The biggest reality problem is that you run the country as a limited-power dictator. There is no legislature or high-court to deal with. I think that for the scope of the game, this is a reasonable concession After all, who criticized Simcity because the mayor built a giant eco-friendly tower or a huge amusement park? I would suggest that we have a way to end game or retire out of governments like that of the UKs where you won’t term out. I would like to just “end” my carreer like when the US president terms out. I would also like to see a history of all my games and how they ended. I would also like a one-page summary that I can screenshot and post to steam (the current system doesn’t fit on the screen all at once).

The technical aspects of the game are good - given that the game is just texts and simple charts. At Least it runs at 144hz. I found the music obnoxious and play in silence. No crashes or other problems. Save system is fine.

This game has a lot going for it. While a political scientist can poke holes into the game's accuracy, I venture to say this game gets a lot right. Small changes can lead to dramatic differences. If you pander to one group, then you (obviously) irk another group. By making large changes, you risk alienting and forcing anomie into your populace. Because of that, this game has a difficulty setting of hard off the bat. And because of that challenge, this game is fun as hell and yes, I'd recommend the hell out of this game.

This game may look complicated and boring on the outside, but once you get into it's really great! Ever dreamed of makeing a american socialist empire (if so vote Bernie)? Ever dream of a nation where ever crime gives teh death penalty and religous people wanna kill you? Ever want to make all drugs, alchol and guns legal? It's so satisfying whatching everything fall into place!

In conclusion, religous and conservative hate simula- I mean Democracy 3 is absoulutely worth and frequesntly goes on sale.

If you ever wanted to kow how it would be to run a county or if you ever wanted to see what might happen if certain policies were enacted in a particular country, well then this is a game for you. The simulation is grait an I had not experianced any bugs in the game so far. What is most impressive is the modding. It is a blast to mod the game. I almost prefere it to playing. But that is just me. Like many people I to made a mod of my county simply because I could. :) I really wanted to make as accurate representation as possible. I loved every hour that I sank in to it and I hardly have any complaints. The biggest one I could poste is the fact that the pop. in the county does not change and there is no way to let say, set the number of active workers in one contry. Everything is based of the total pop.. Maybe that is a plan for a future DLC or D4 :) The game is not to expensive and it has a good Forum to satisfy all the questions in the world.

I want to love this game but it has obvious bias built in. Liberalism is automatically measured as positive and Conservatism is automatically measured as negative. I am use to this in all forms of my entertainment as disappointing as it is, but in a game BASED on such idiologies, its just not entertaining.

Really simple game, after only 6 hours of gameplay I already had 49% of all the achievements. And the game it self gets really boring very fast. Totally not worth the 22 euros I paid for it, believe me. I also ignored the comments and already regret it deeply. DO NOT BUY!!!

[Edit: total rewrite]

While I like the update, I'm unimpresed at how I had to go and manually check all Democracy files were gone before I could FINALLY get the game to work.
Also, that's really soured me trying to get back into the game again, so for now, I don't recommend it.
