This game is far more fun than it really should be.
I mean, the actual mechanics are pretty simple, you get some action point type things every turn and you can use them to adjust sliders for existing polices, scrap existing policies or pick nerw policies from a list.
But then there are all the different interest groups to consider - going all socialist? Then the capitalists will try to assassinate you, or at least, a cabinet minister might resign
Lose an election and it's game over, you only need more votes than the other party to win rather than over 50%, so you can make voter apathy and low turnout work in your favour.
It's a two party winner takes all system, no coalitions or minor parties and that is my only criticism of this game - it works well as a USA simulator but less so as a UK or Germany simulator.
It's a simple concept, but the UI is well done and the whole cause and effect system is pretty easy to figure out - invest in science and your GDP will go up, but their will be a rise in pollution and angry environmentalists may start plotting/voting against you.
It has workshop support and there are some awesome creations available.
You don't have to commit to a long session, one turn takes a few minutes, perhaps less if you're following a long turn plan and you can save and quit the game at any point.
Basically, it's really well thought out and a good way to spend a few hours of your life, plus there are difficulty sliders for different levels of player experience and/or drunkenness.

Latest update was a total screw up to deal with. I had to manually remove the game and every file of it from my pc, followed by a clean install.Wasn't the best way to get bakc into a game.
And while the update added a lot of great stuff, its ridiculous how the game is so difficult to balance. You can't do anything police-wise without totally annoying liberal voters, and you can't impliment any taxes without totally annoying conservatives. That's not exactly how the real world works, considering how taxes are these days.

Would be nice if there was more balance added to how the voter groups react to policies.

Still not recommending this game fully, which is a shame because I want to enjoy it more. :/

I want to love this game but it has obvious bias built in. Liberalism is automatically measured as positive and Conservatism is automatically measured as negative. I am use to this in all forms of my entertainment as disappointing as it is, but in a game BASED on such idiologies, its just not entertaining.

Crank up sales tax to 50% and repeal all others? Move the USA Federal Budget from red to black? Close all the airports to lower polution? If you want to go nuts, you can. There are several mods available with more policies and instructions to create your own.

The main object of this simulation is to get re-elected. The policies enacted truly focus on the approval of a group and the amount of membership in that group. For example, giving a tax break for urban farms will increase the membership in the "Farmers" group and their approval.

There is not an explicit explination on why the creator of the game chooses the relationships of policies to changes in the simulation, but *most* do make common sense. I'll list the common complaints later.

This is a fasinating game with one of the best government simulators I've yet seen. While it does not explore the "balance of power" between legislative, executive and judicial, it shows the maCssive effect that goverment policies can have on the daily lives of the citizens.

Here are some of the main "balances" that the game explores, with the goverment's budget as an aspect in all of them.
-Capitalism vs the enviroment, disadvantaging the poor, taxation and liberal socialism
-Healthcare, is it a right or a privalage?
-Welfare vs comfortably unemployed
-Foreign Policy (the game is suprisingly light on this though)
-Immigration control and liberal membership/approval
-Firearms control and health/crime

It goes on and on. If you're looking for a complex challenge and want to understand goverment better, you should experience this game.

Democracy 3 is an original and intruiging game that you don't often find in strictly point-and-click games these days. Your decision making as a country leader can have great and widespread consequences or benefits. The game lets you run a country however you like, making decisions on political subjects especially as we are experiencing them now in the real world. The cause and effect system is very extensive, although some political topics seem to have odd, nonexistant, or arguably incorrect effects in the network.

Overall I've found this game challenging and fun to play. You may find the campaign somewhat short and limited, but the user modding commuity is strong and still providing entertainment.

A strangely addicting game, if I'm to be honest. The UI is nicely done, and while the music doesn't really vary, it is amazing at capturing the mood and intent of the game. This genre is always at a disadvantage when it comes to scope, but this game comes the closest to simulating the real decisions made at the highest levels of government. In playing this game, bear in mind that it was not developed with a Call Of Duty-esque budget. Do that, and you'll certainly come to appreciate the game as I have.

A fun political game for politic-nerds?

  • Rock solid game
  • 144hz support and nice looking charts, layout, good design, etc
  • Fun variety of different political philosophies and policies
  • This game kept me playing for hours
  • Workshop has some cool add-ons

My chrome browser auto-loads realclearpolitics.com everytime its launched. If you don’t follow politics I don’t know that this game will be enjoyable for you. The fact is, the game is easier if you intuitively know what “biofuel subsidy” or “private school vouchers” are.

I would also say that the game is difficult. However, before starting a game you may reduce the difficulty. If you turn off assassinations the game becomes much easier and allows you to focus in on the policy.

At first I felt like the game forced me to play left, socialist. That’s not accurate, as a libertarian-leaning-conservative (right party for non-usa readers), I found my games always playing on the right side of the spectrum. Sure, I might subsidize the **** out of mass-transit to try to fix one of the “problems”, but overall I can’t help but gravitate towards my own belief of what government should do.

As a sim, the game puts you in charge of running the country like a business. This will cause you, or at least it did me, to abandon your precepts. I don’t believe government ought to tax behaviors like smoking; yet in the game they present a big red colored problem of asthma affected heavily by smoking. So to “beat” the game or solve this issue I tax the crap out of smoking. I don’t care if people want to get sick from smoking, and i certainly don’t think the government should be meddling in it.

The biggest reality problem is that you run the country as a limited-power dictator. There is no legislature or high-court to deal with. I think that for the scope of the game, this is a reasonable concession After all, who criticized Simcity because the mayor built a giant eco-friendly tower or a huge amusement park? I would suggest that we have a way to end game or retire out of governments like that of the UKs where you won’t term out. I would like to just “end” my carreer like when the US president terms out. I would also like to see a history of all my games and how they ended. I would also like a one-page summary that I can screenshot and post to steam (the current system doesn’t fit on the screen all at once).

The technical aspects of the game are good - given that the game is just texts and simple charts. At Least it runs at 144hz. I found the music obnoxious and play in silence. No crashes or other problems. Save system is fine.

If you ever wanted to kow how it would be to run a county or if you ever wanted to see what might happen if certain policies were enacted in a particular country, well then this is a game for you. The simulation is grait an I had not experianced any bugs in the game so far. What is most impressive is the modding. It is a blast to mod the game. I almost prefere it to playing. But that is just me. Like many people I to made a mod of my county simply because I could. :) I really wanted to make as accurate representation as possible. I loved every hour that I sank in to it and I hardly have any complaints. The biggest one I could poste is the fact that the pop. in the county does not change and there is no way to let say, set the number of active workers in one contry. Everything is based of the total pop.. Maybe that is a plan for a future DLC or D4 :) The game is not to expensive and it has a good Forum to satisfy all the questions in the world.

This game has a lot going for it. While a political scientist can poke holes into the game's accuracy, I venture to say this game gets a lot right. Small changes can lead to dramatic differences. If you pander to one group, then you (obviously) irk another group. By making large changes, you risk alienting and forcing anomie into your populace. Because of that, this game has a difficulty setting of hard off the bat. And because of that challenge, this game is fun as hell and yes, I'd recommend the hell out of this game.

First of all, whatever country you choose, the game only offers you the option of a two-party system—the ruling party who just won the elections (the player) and the opposition party. Frankly it would have been better if they didn't just bother as I see no significance at all to the opposing party. They're just there to compete against you during election time—the people who don't like you will either vote for the opposing party or not vote at all.

Second, the game seems to completely drop any notion of the different powers of government. You, the player, are simply the executive and there is no significance at all of the legislative and judicial powers. The in-game "currency" or the thing you need in order to do things in the game is simply "political capital." So long as you have enough political capital, you can do anything from offering school vouchers to allowing abortion on demand, no complaints from the opposing party or from the judiciary. Aside from the obvious disdain you'll get from the conservatives, the only other problem you'll have is the increased chance of assassination. And you get this political capital simply from your cabinet ministers. For example, if your country has a lot of conservatives and you appoint an Education Minister with lots of conservative sympathies, then you'll get more political capital from that minister. VERY SIMPLISTIC.

Third, the main hindrance to achieving your goals is the measly excuse of assassinations. The other main hindrance is elections. You have to win elections in order to advance to your next term or the game is over. It's relatively easy since you're just fighting two other sides—the opposing party and the non-voters. But the assassination thing is frankly just luck. First you'll be getting messages about increasing terrorist activities and failed assassination attempts, then voila—they finally succeed, you're dead, and the game is over. Even if you're already running a police state where the politce are armed with submachine guns, they'll still get you. It's just a matter of probability.

Four, your country seems to exist in a bubble as there is also a minimal take of international diplomacy. Again, the take on diplomacy comes in the form of terrorists assassinating you if you oppress minorities too much. The closest input you have on diplomacy is funding for international aid. Increasing it would reduce racial tension in the country (and thus also reduce the chance that you'd be assassinated by a racial extremist) but would annoy Patriots which—guess what—also have their own lineup of assassins.

This is the game for those who appreciate LOTS of graphs and charts, as this game is mostly just graphs and charts. Not a bad thing, though, since the game makes full use of it through the way it simulates the internal dynamics of a nation through numbers. For example: increase state school funding >>> decrease poverty >>> decrease crime rates. However, to increase state school funding you may need to increase taxes which will lower the GDP and may lead to a corporate exodus further hurting your economy. Thus, on the aspect of the interrelationship of the different policies and factions within a society, the game does good for the most part but for me, it still hasn't achieved the level of realism I want in a game that purports to be about "democracy."

Decided to try this out in my homeland: Canada.
- Thought to myself: "Haha, I'm going to become a dictator and run my nation into the ground!"
- Against my better judgement, ended up creating an incredibly socialist society.
- Destroyed my economy but everyone loved me. Canadians were too polite to acknowledge the depression I had just created for them.

Restart as Germany. Will bring back Deutschland to former glory.
- Decide to try my best to go full dictator.
- Tax the big corporations and eliminate foreign investments. Keep Germany for Germans.
- Abolish anti-racism laws and invoke racial profiling. Keep Germany for Germans.
- Arm my police force to the teeth, set up cameras, drones, ID Cards, gated communities. Keep Germans safe from Germans.
- Mandatory Labour for the unemployed. Make Germany Great Again.
- Massive spy network and secret police force. Das ist gut.
- Liberals unhappy... FREE EYE CHECKUPS FOR EVERYONE!
- Massive support for the Uber Deutschland Party. Everyone happy because unhappiness is illegal.
- Homelessness gone. Economy booming. Crime gone. Obesity gone. 1984 achieved.

10/10 would Hitler again. Still gotta build that wall though.

Love this game! Can get a wee bit repetitive, with the same scenarios/incidents occurring that you need to make a decision on. But thanks to the community generated workshop collections; it has kept is alive and added more content.

Have spent many enjoyable hours on the game and would definitely recommend the game overall.

In short order of learning a few things I had turned the United Kingdom into an egalitarian, agrarian state that was truly green and economically prosperous land...a shining beacon in the modern times of stupid politicians. I now suggest all real-world politicians play this game for a week before resuming their so-called jobs and see if we can't avert some socio-political nonsense they get paid obscene amounts for! :P

The first 5 hours of this game are probably some of the most fun I've had with a political sim ever. After the first 5 hours, you're sat there wondering "well what the hell do I do now?" Sure, you can have fun trying to simulate different political parties, but that gets stale fast. I spent an hour learning the game. I spent the next two and a half fixing every problem that the British government had. In 2 hours, poverty was 0%, unemployment was 0%, health was 100%, there were no drasitc issues, and I was winning elections with 100% of the vote. Once you've made it that far, the game has no more depth to offer. Buy on sale. Do not pay full price.

The game is at times enjoyable, but the sense of depth quickly vanishes. For my first game, on default settings, my party received 99% of the votes, and 100% for the next two elections. The policies seem to offer choice, but in reality there are obvious ones to choose and keep high, and obvious ones to never even touch.

A very relaxing game, buy it on sale and sink a couple hours into it, but don't expect anything even close to the depth it advertises.
