“I returned to Democracy 3 in an attempt to put right the wrongs of my previous administration. On my first visit, I broke Britain, crushing its culture and creating a country reminiscent of Clockwork Orange, filled with gangs and ultraviolence.”

“Positech has made, I believe, one of the fullest real-world governance simulation games ever conceived. It’s engaging, it’s self-aware, and, at times, it’s funnier than anyone might have expected”

Om dette spil

Have you ever wanted to be president? or prime-minister? Convinced you could do a better job of running the country? Let's face it, you could hardly do a worse job than our current political leaders.

Crime, Unemployment, National Debt, Terrorism, Climate Change...Have you got the answers to the problems that face western industrialized nations? Here is your chance to find out...

An entire virtual country

Democracy 3 simulates the motivations, loyalties and desires of everyone in the country. A custom-designed neural network is used to model individual voters, each which varying memberships of voting groups, political parties and pressure groups. Each voters income is modeled, along with their levels of complacency and cynicism. This is the most sophisticated political strategy game ever created.

Unique user interface

Despite being vastly detailed under-the-hood, Democracy 3 has a unique user interface that makes visualizing the connections between laws, policies, voters and situations easy. A simple iconic-based view of your countries issues allows you to 'drill-down' through all the relationships between policies and voters to quickly analyze the impacts of your decisions. Your trade policy may affect GDP, which will affect unemployment, which will effect poverty, and thus crime, leading to a change in tourism, which affects GDP...

Complex simulated voters

Each individual voter is a mixture of a subset of the 21 different voter groups represented within the game. They might be a young, wealthy, liberal socialist commuter, or a retired conservative religious capitalist, for example. Not only this, but the extent to which they identify each of those groups is both variable, and can be affected by your policies in the long term. Convert your country to religion, or atheism, to capitalism, or socialism by careful and nuanced adjustment of your policies and laws over time. A 'focus group' feature lets you look at individual voters and see exactly how they came to a decision to vote for you (or not!).

After a close call I entered office of the U.S of A. with my party, The Sixth Division. I immeidiately raised the army and police forces arming all officers. My ministers and liberals resented me for this and so I replaced them all with hand picked fools to run my government. At this time my popularity was low. I then made the death penalty common for small crimes and made sure all police officers were armed with submachine guns. I then saw that a group called the Black Power Group were starting to hate me and so I passed a race discrimination act making sure rascism is illegal. I then made joining the army mandatory and increased the borders and spy networks to the maximum. After surviving five assasination attempts from the socialist party thanks to my secret spy network, the "Hapstepo" a group of black extremists broke into my office with machine guns killing me and everyone in my party and on my board. Very, fun. 10/10 Great game!

First impressions aren't great - this game has so much depth that the interface can be very confusing. The tutorial helps... a bit, but the best trick is to play your first game on 50% difficulty. After that, you will understand the mechanics of the game better and can dive in with gusto again and again. And you'll want to do just that. After all, everyone knows that politicians are self-serving idiots and that we could do a better job armed with nothing more than common sense, don't we? You can build a fairer country or guarantee jobs for all. Rapidly though you find that running a country is more like weaving and pulling one thread taut will cause something else unravel unexpectedly. The game balance is great, nothing feels random, just complex. With numerous countries to run, each with their own problems and opportunities, plus workshop expansions, this game just keeps on giving. All the depth of the best of the SimCity game, without the unecessary graphical frippery.

+ Incredible amount of depth
+ Sound bites are enjoyable, and not so prevalent that you become annoyed
+ UI, while at first daunting, allows for tons of functionality; the minimalist design is crisp and visually pleasing

- Tutorial was a bit lacking, and might turn some people away
- The occasional large decisions that must be made at the end of the turn do not display possible effects; it's not made clear what kind of impact your decisions will have

An unusual game, due to its focus on the 'Political' genre, one that not many would touch, with, frankly, poor execution.
You start off as the leader of a country, with an all-new political party (though I may not be a political expert, I'm sure that you'd need favour of the voters, prior to becoming their leader) that nobody supports, but enough people voted for. You start the game, by choosing your country, your party's name, your opposition's name, term lengths, term limits, natural disasters (via some form of wizardry), compulsary voting, monarchy (on/off - not the greatest thing to remove as you enter office), difficulty, political apathy, and innate [Socialism/Liberalism]. A lot of choices, before starting the game; leading you to believe that this game is quite complicated and difficult to grasp.

With my political ineptitude, I didn't think that I'd last for more than 1 term; I was wrong. This game doesn't seem to understand the necessary balance between you being right and being wrong; The electorate doesn't have any, apparent, political preference. For me to put this, truly, into words, I'll have to walk you through how I set out my career.

I decided to go for the United kingdom - a highly Christian nation - and call myself 'The Atheist Party', being an avid atheist. I then decided that, in this highly Christian nation, that I would do everything, in my power, to eradicate religion. This has, since, gone down well, and this has had no effect on my popularity with the electorate. In the same year, I was, also, able to take poverty, crime, tobacco, tax fraud away and half the national debt. This shows just how broken this game can be, when you know nothing about politics. I'm now 12 hours into the game and have 100% of the votes, every term, have never been targeted for assassination, don't seem to be losing favour with anybody I haven't already annoyed , irreparably, and the national reserve is only going up. I've had to download countless mods, to simply elongate the life-span of this game, alas, it has lost its brief charm and, with it, my favour.

Of course, during my time playing it, I had a lot of fun, playing it. But this goes quite quickly and, unless you are a devout politician, you may not have a great deal of fun with it, once you have fulfilled your desired goals. If you are, like me, looking for a good strategy game, then, may I suggest anything, but this.

It's a pretty good game which genre is basically Round-Based-Strategy. You come into position to lead a whole country, with all its interest groups, problems and virtues. With policy- and budget-changes that take effect on already existent problems (and maybe create new ones) or situations you keep your country running.

There is much Workshop-Content out there that makes the game more diverse and significantly harder (and sometimes better). I always try to minimize my debts and to make the people happy but you can do otherwise if you decide to. All in all the game offers many possibilities which all want to be found and tried out and due to its easy to mod interface you are even able to make the game better for yourself and the others. :) I like it!

If you buy it you HAVE TO check out the Workshop-Content on Steam, trust me some people invest much time in improving the game experience :) Special thanks to them too.

As a fan of strategy and simulation games, this was quite fun for me. The systems are complex (which you'll see the moment you look at how things are all connected) but after an hour or so the whole thing becomes extremely gameable. Easily-gamed systems means an easy game, once you figure out how to do so. But the fun isn't in the freeform games, it's in the various scenarios you're given (for example rescuing a country from economic devastation, familiar?)

I bought this during a past Steam sale for a song, along with the DLC that was available at the time. There is a lot of crap in my library from bundles and sales. This purchase is not one I regret. In fact had it been a full price purchase I still think it would have been worth it, and that's fairly high praise nowadays.

There was a web based version of this game over fourteen years ago. I can't remember the name but it was basically make X number of decisions on bills or laws that would pop up for vote. It was fun for a while, but then got really boring because the strategy was funnelled. Meaning if you duplicated your picks every time you'd end up at the same result. It really isn't random and the choices are limited.

3/10 stars because it is OK to pass time but I wouldn't buy it for more than $5.

This game is a great way to fill up time. I've played it mostly on my laptop because it can't handle the more hardware demanding games. It is a tough, complicated game, and has a good amount of realism to it. One more thing to consider is that unless you use $100 bills to light your fancy cuban cigars, do not buy games when they are not on sale. This game is no acception.

GUI: Sadly there are no 3D graphics, which are usually my favorite parts of many games, so I will review the graphical user interface. The design might be tough to understand at first, but after about 2 hours, you will understand mostly how to play. When I was intoduced into the game, I failed miserably. They could've done a better job introducing newbies, but after a couple tries, I got most of it down. Some of my friends tried it, couldn't get a feel for it, and just put it down because they didn't get how to play(Them: >:) MUAHAHAHAHA LEGALISE ALL THE METH AND DRUGS Me: *facepalm).
Gameplay: The gameplay of this game is everything you'd think it is. It is a great game, which as you probably know already is based on politics. Sadly, it does get boring if you keep playing.
Bugs: As of now, I have never encountered any bugs, although some features in the game such as assasinations can really be annoying, and should be changed up a bit because you might not get past them.
Hardware: Democracy 3 is very lightweight, which is why I can even handle it on my laptop.
Sound: The audio is quite interesting, there is music for when you're failing, succeding, and many other occasions. The gunshot sound of you getting assasinated, the cheerful music when you have 80% popularity, etc...

CONCLUSION: 8/10 Overall, it was a great game

All in all, this is a great game not meant for the casual FPS gamer.

Oddly enough, this one is not about invading oil-rich Middle Eastern countries.

Successfully ruling a country means juggling hundreds of factors in an effort to satisfy most of your citizens and evetually get re-elected. The trick lies in somehow dodging the very real possibility of running your country into the ground by failing economically, socially or politically, which despite the rather clear interface and streamlined mechanics is no easy job. Extreme failure in navigating the political landscape can even get you assassinated, which I believe isn't even the worst outcome, all things considered. So there you have it, Democracy 3 is a remarkably complex yet approachable game designed to challenge your gray matter.

P.S. I will not get in political arguments. I will not get in political arguments. I will not get in political arguments. I will not get in political arguments. I will not get in political arguments. I will not get in political arguments. I will not get in political arguments. You get the picture.

Look, look, I wanted to like this game. Who wouldn't? Controling policies and governing a country sounds fun. But the game is ridiculously easy. With practically no effort I LITERALLY eradicated crime, health problems, and poverty. What?

The UI in this game gets a lot of attention, and, while it is slick-looking, it is barely functional. When you pop into a submenu to take a look at a tax or policy, you have to click the REVERT CHANGE button after tinkering with it. Apparently pressing X on the window means "confirm change" to the developers. Such clunky design. It is impossible to know what policies will do/affect until you implement them. On the policy screen your only hints are a vaguely worded paragraph, "Wow, farmers would sure love some crop subsidies" but I'm magically supposed to guess it will ♥♥♥♥ off capitalits? Maybe you could say "Sure, that's a given, of course it will." But many have esoteric by products such as maybe it lowers the membership of the capitalist group. You can't guess this stuff and a bar that says what percent of your constituency will like the new policy is not enough of a hint as to the effects of a policy.

Don't get me started on assassinations. Extremely frustrating mechanic, and once a group decides it wants to kill you, you basically just have a few turns left in the game with no recourse. Fun. ♥♥♥♥ off any group enough and they will magically find a splinter group to kill you, even, say, farmers or parents. ♥♥♥♥ that. And, sure, you can turn it off from the options menu, but what type of concession is that? They're practically admitting the mechanic is broken.

This game is moderately fun in a Civ-esque way, and maybe it's worth a buck or two to try it if it's ever HEAVILY discounted in a sale... But, as is, this game is just not good.
