Update 01.110 - Local coordinates sector, Bugfixes

This week we added a new feature that makes the connection of two stations easier when they are built in each other's vicinity. So from now on, you don’t need to use the merge blocks to connect them. Newly placed station creates an area of 1000 cubic meters around it.
When you try to place another station within the area, it will be aligned by default with the first station, therefore you can connect them by blocks.
And last but not least, we have fixed more bugs.

Update 01.109 - Intuitive planetary building, Bugfixes

After the release of Planets we are focusing this week on bug fixing and improving the building process.
Placing your first block (base station) on a planet surface is now much more intuitive for newcomers and returning players. Blocks are aligned with gravity by default. You can start new grids (small/large ships, vehicles, base stations) from toolbar icons without going to G screen. This is the first iteration and more improvements are planned for the planetary building process.

About This Game

Space Engineers is a sandbox game about engineering, construction, exploration and survival in space and on planets. Players build space ships, space stations, planetary outposts of various sizes and uses (civil and military), pilot ships and travel through space to explore planets and gather resources to survive. Featuring both creative and survival modes, there is no limit to what can be built, utilized and explored.

Space Engineers features a realistic, volumetric-based physics engine: everything in the game can be assembled, disassembled, damaged and destroyed. The game can be played either in single or multiplayer modes.

Volumetric objects are structures composed from block-like modules interlocked in a grid. Volumetric objects behave like real physical objects with mass, inertia and velocity. Individual modules have real volume and storage capacity.

Space Engineers is inspired by reality and by how things work. Think about modern-day NASA technology extrapolated 60 years into the future. Space Engineers strives to follow the laws of physics and doesn't use technologies that wouldn't be feasible in the near future.

Space Engineers concentrates on construction and exploration aspects, but can be played as a survival shooter as well. We expect players will avoid engaging in direct man-to-man combat and instead use their creativity and engineering skills to build war machines and fortifications to survive in space and on planets. Space Engineers shouldn’t be about troops; it should be about the machinery you build.

    - Earth Easy Start - start on a habitable planet with a set of basic vehicles. Your survival is threatened by attacking pirates who set up shop within range of their drones.
    - Mars Easy Start - become a colonist on a barren, inhospitable planet. Make sure you secure a source of water soon. Also beware of local pirates.
    - Alien Easy Start – the alien planet is a place with very sparse oxygen, not enough to breath freely. There is hostile fauna and pirates who want to claim the riches of this mysterious world and are not willing to share.
    - Moon Easy Start – You start on a moon orbiting a habitable planet. Your base is under attack by pirates.
    - Empty Star System - It is a star system with 3 distinctive planets and their 3 moons. Except for local fauna, planets are uninhabited.
    - Easy Start 1 – start on an asteroid platform with one large ship and two small ships
    - Easy Start 2 – start in a green asteroid station with several large and small ships (this is a large scene!)
    - Lone Survivor – start on an abandoned asteroid platform with no ships
    - Crashed Red Ship – your mother ship just crashed...
    - Two Platforms – competitive two-team multi-player world
    - Asteroids – start in a rescue ship with very limited resources
    - Empty World – no asteroids, no ships; suitable for creative mode
  • Enemy NPCs
    - sabiroids (spiders): can be found on alien planets and on Titan moons. They can destroy metal blocks and attack players. Their favorite hunting strategy is hiding in the ground and un-burrow to surprise their prey. When players kill a spider, new spiders won’t appear in the area for some time. They also store some components inside their bodies from objects and blocks that they consumed.
    - pirate bases: can be found either in space or occupying planetary surface. They have bounty hidden inside their containers that players can loot if they get over the drone attacks.
    - enemy drones: they spawn automatically from pirate bases and attack the players when they venture into pirate territory

  • Custom colors for blocks – Customize your creations by using any color you like
  • Cargo ships - auto-piloted vessels (miners, freighters and military) that carry ore, ingots, constructions components and other materials from sector to sector. They can be looted but beware, they often contain booby traps!
  • Environmental hazards – protect your character and your creations from meteor storms (Safe, Normal, Cataclysm, Armageddon)
  • Conveyor, Collector, Connector (IMPORTANT: this is a first work-in-progress version and a realistic version will be added later) - Conveyors move items from inventory to inventory. Collectors can collect small objects (ore, ingots, components, tools) into inventory. Connectors can throw items from inventory to space (in future update could be used to connect two ships/stations and transfer items)
  • Artificial mass – can be used to add gravity-affected mass to ships, useful in machine ships or cars
  • Wheels - use them with rotors and artificial mass to build vehicles
  • Automated turrets – gatling, missile and interior. Turrets are used mostly as defense mechanism rather than shooting other players. They aim on decoys (automatically by default), meteorites, missiles or all moving objects (eg. small/large ships) - targeting can be changed in the control panel
  • Large weapons - missile launcher (for large ships)
  • Large and small ship grinder and welder – assemble and disassemble blocks faster and in larger amount
  • Batteries - enables players to store the energy generated by solar panels or reactors at an efficiency rate of 80%
  • Pistons - offers the option to build more advanced machinery
  • Ion thrusters – suitable for environments without atmosphere (space or moons) / not recommended to be used on planets with atmosphere
  • Hydrogen - hydrogen thrusters, hydrogen tanks and hydrogen bottles
  • Atmospheric thrusters - powered by electricity, working only on planets with atmosphere
  • Factions - create and join factions, determine ownership of blocks and manage the relations between them (hostile/ally). NOTE: Factions are currently Work-in-Progress. There are still many things to be added (eg. chat and communication) and some bugs/issues are yet to be fixed.
  • Remote ship control – control ships without being inside the ship’s cockpit (drones)
  • Remote turret control - control turrets directly
  • 3D printing - export (CTRL+ALT+E) and 3D print the creations that you design in the game (
  • Modding API - brings a lot of new possibilities to modders and allows them to alter the game by writing C# scripts which have access to in-game objects (WIP - more features will be added in the future)
  • Blueprints - save your ship or station on a blueprint and paste it into your game
  • Projector block – project blueprints and weld the projection
  • Sensor – detects ships, palyers, asteroids, stations, floating objects and their state (friendly, neutral or enemy) and ownership
  • Sound block - reproduce predefined sounds such as alarm or siren for announcements
  • Programmable block – players can write small programs executed by the block
  • Communication – chat between players and factions
  • GPS - create, send, receive and manage GPS coordinates in the game

Space Engineers is in development and undergoing frequent optimizations. The performance will get better.

The performance depends on the complexity of your world and the configuration of your computer. Simple worlds run smoothly even on low-end computers, but a more complex world with rich object interactions could overload even high-end computers.

When I picked up this game, we didn't even have functioning weapons - The only way to damage other ships was to ram into them at top speed like a maniac, which generally left you as mangled as your target.

Now we've got weapons, NPC ships, remote-controlled ships, radio communication, jump drives, solar power, oxygen, wheeled vehicles and three different kinds of thrusters to pick from. A few years ago the effective game world was a small cluster of asteroids floating in empty space, and now we have planets that are around 50-60 kilometers in radius.

It's been a long and fun ride, and it shows no signs of stopping.

To make a long review short... This game is fantastic, and you'll hate every hour you spend on it.

--- To Begin ---

I have been a part of the Space Engineers community for quite a very long time. Although at first, the game was still being developed (as in... Before weapons, detonations, and the etc existed at all). By then, I enjoyed the game for a while however was never extremely hardcore into it. This all ended up changing around the past month and so however. With the introuction of new community groups, factions, and of course mods, (also of course the content being added every week) the game has never had a segment of any real 'boredom'.

--- Graphics ---

The graphics on this game are done pretty well for many of the Sandbox Sims I have seen out and around. It is noted though, that to run this game on higher graphics settings you -will- require an at least decent PC to run this game sufficiently. There are of course a few glitches with the Early Access still above, such as a few lighting and shading bugs here and there, and the occasional block bug ot glitch. Overall though, the graphics and physics are all well and nice to look at (for the hours you will spend in the realms of space), of course.

--- Gameplay ---

The gameplay is something that will vary depending on you yourself. If you enjoy building new (NOT FEATURED!)land, orbital, or space creations; enjoy exploring the infinite fields of asteroids, (NOW FEATURED!)planets, moons, and simply space; and would want to join the already growing and very friendly, creative and supportive community, then this is the game for you! The gameplay is fairly simple to a certain degree, the building being commonly referred to as 'minecraft in space'. This, however, changes drasticly past the simple placement of blocks, such as the production chains from mineral ore, to basic materials that can be processed into components that then are used to build and create each block in the game. This is a game where commonly you would want to play with a friend or even more (the more the better!).

--- Community ---

The Space Engineers Community is one of (if not the) most active and creative communities I have grown to be a part of on Steam. The Workshop houses hundreds of thousands of player-made creations ranging from spaceships of combat, commerce, and civilian use, as well as stations of all types, ground vehicles and orbital ships, as well as now including land bases. There are also an array of hundreds of player factions, from pirates and mercccenaries of war, to civilian trading corporations and industrial commerce administrations. There is never a shortage of player-created factions, and it is always a great idea to find one that suits your interests best, and join in to meet other and new friends, and to share designs, tips, and your own universe experiences.

--- Concluding ---

Overall, Space Engineers is a wonderful game. Although there are of course bugs, errors, and situations that occur, this is still in Early Access. The game itself is doing quite well so far, and I, alike many many others, are excited to see what will be released next. The release of planets today is a revolutionary new feature as well (Although it is a bit of a framerate kill on weaker PCs). Multiplayer still does have a bit of connection and server bugs, however it is functional and does work for the majority (though most problems I have experienced were from the server hosts themselves).

All in all, a great game, and I recommend it for any space, simulator, or sandbox fan.

You the Astronaut, First Person or Third Person.

Block building system in meters for small and large ships, and stations. Four tools allow you to construct, deconstruct, mine for resources, and shoot stuff.

Distant enough future to have gravity generators and warp drives.

A small asteroid cluster, generated field of asteroids, or planets.

Minecraft in Space.

Creative and Survival modes that give the player of hours of creative and destructive power in the zero-gravity of space, and now within planet atmosperes.

Ability to mod plus an already extensive list of blocks makes for a flexible sandbox in space. Multiplayer.

Velocity capped at a little over 100 m/s and other bad physics design choices. Large ships, many ships, large bases, and now planets create performance problems. No in-game economy (trade ships are planned, but generally you mine resources simply to waste time in survival mode).

You'll spend most of your time making ships, and then wanting to show them off or fly them around. That by itself is enough reason to buy this game. Add in multiplayer and then mods and it only gets more interesting. If you think you have a high-end computer this game will test that notion.

This review is based on the game as it was in October 2015.

I am really enjoying this game. There's no real point to it, it's just a sandbox where you build ships and stations, either in survival mode, or a creative mode where you have infinite resources.

I rather enjoy a bit of single player survival, where you have to bootstrap your production, power and oxygen. Once that's done, it's all about building ships and stations and then losing and damaging them due to your own incompetence. There are no real enemies yet, but they're being worked on.

I really like the blueprint feature, where you can design a ship in creative mode (or even in survival if you wish) and then build exact copies of it, either manually or mechanically. This means that you can re-use a good design and slowly improve it by adding new features to it.

All this blueprint stuff integrates with the workshop, so you can easily share your designs, and use the designs of other people.

My main issue with this game is a result of it being early access. There are many bugs, most of these in multiplayer. There are weekly updates which fix bugs and add features, but they also introduce new bugs. If you're playing a game over the course of a few days, you may one day suddenly find stuff to have broken, or work differently. An option to temporarily stay on a specific version and postpone updates would be a good work-around, but it's not available.

Multiplayer works, but it's a lot buggier than singleplayer. It has improved greatly since I got this game, and I'm confident that the devs get it to work nicely in the end, but if you're getting this for the multiplayer, you should expect problems.

To sum up, I like:
- The blueprint mechanic lets you re-use good designs and even share them on the workshop
- There are loads of mechanical and moving parts that allow incredibly complex creations, but this complexity remains optional
- Updates every week
- Lots of cool stuff on the workshop

I dislike:
- Many bugs, even more in multiplayer
- There are weapons, but you can only shoot asteroids or other players at the moment. Enemies are being worked on.
- User interface can be a bit confusing at first
