About This Game

Experience the wild as a mother badger sheltering her cubs from harm. On their journey they get stalked by a bird of prey, encounter perils of the night, river rapids crossings, big forest fires and the looming threat of death by starvation.

Food is to be found, but is there enough for everyone? You will learn that the cubs need food not just to survive, but to enable them overcome the varying challenges they will face as they make their way through the world.

Are you ready for a truly different adventure, something that might evoke feelings you've never felt in a game before? In the wild, all living creatures are put to the test. The question in the end is who will survive to live another day?

Retro Family have once again composed a beautiful soundtrack to an original and graphically innovative setting in a world of nature where shelter is your only hope and survival your only goal.

Fun to play through at least once, but it won't take long. Then you can just replay the same story over and over again. Honestly haven't played it since the first two runthroughs, but it is worth picking up for the short story if you're interested.

Shelter is kind of a walking simulator for badgers. The player needs to guide the baby badgers through various locations - finding food and avoiding dangers. I'm not a fan of the stylized graphics or the gameplay. I only went partway into the 2nd level and I just couldn't take it anymore because I was bored. I don't understand all of the positive reviews, but I'm in the minority here so maybe I'm just missing something. In any case, I don't recommend it but a lot of other people do.

This game is a perfect example of an indie game done right. You don't need super realistic graphics to make the game standout. The developers combined an interesting concept with a unique art style and made a game that I was engaged with throughout the end. Losing a baby is sad because you legitimately feel like you failed as your duty as a parent. This game pleasantly surprised me.

It's something different from what I'm used to play. Also it's different from other survival games, since here you must take care of your children while you yourself seem to be untaouchable and can't die of starvation.
The game also has a rather unique graphics solution. An excellent example of how you can make a beautiful game with low graphics. It's very beautiful in an artistic way.

Gameplay is simple - explore, find food to feed your cubs and protect them from various dangers. Your primary goal is to get ahead, explore untill eventually you reach the end. Food source is limited despite the fact that you can harvest fruit, vegetables and even hunt small or not that smal animals, so it's best not to linger too long in one place, but keep moving ahead.

As for the cons: There's no tutorial to start you up. You start the game in a cave unaware of what you can and must do. Luckily community guides can help (spoler: that little white furry thing that apears to be dead is not dead, it just needs food)
There are some elements of a tuturial in a form of flash images that display a message, but in my oppinion, it's not enough. I saw a picture of rocks in a river, I suspected it might indicate that we can hide behind rocks, but I was not sure about that and did not wan't to risk it... Yeah I should've hid behind the rocks.

Over all I like the game and I will buy the sequel, but it was really short. I finished the game in about half an hour and later replayed it to end it in the best way possible and now I don't see myslef playing it again. It's nice and I enjoyed it, but the reply value is really low.

Crashed twice before I could finally get past the first section. Very short, but feels really long because of how bored I got by the end. Framerate is terrible in the last section.

I will give it this though. I did feel bad every time one of my babies died.

Unfortunately, that's also the worst par. The first two died at night because this game hardly explains anything, and I had no idea what was going on. I'm still mad about that.

The third was swept away. (That one was mostly my fault though.)

I named the last two Sans and Papyrus to remind me of a better game. When they died, I couldn't even off myself and was horrified at the thought of starting all over from the beginning. Luckily, that wasn't the case. My last two babies survived till the end, and then I returned it.

0 out of 5 badger babies. Would not play again. Not really worth the $1.50.

I embarked on a journey with my children. Teddy, Lucy, Oliver, Sammy and Miguel.

Teddy, the youngest. He nearly passed away in our home but my other children found food to save him.
Lucy was selfish, and an overeater. But I would have taken her eating more than her share if it meant she wouldn't have run off at night and never returned.
Oliver and Sammy were strong. They supported each other when there was no one else.
Miguel. He was the most selfless child you could ever have wanted. But his reluctance to eat made him weaker, and unable to swim against the currents.

Now, Oliver, Sammy and Teddy live a life of their own. I pray for their safety.

My feels. 10/10

This was a fun discovery for me from the Steam sale, which I would reccomend getting it during, because it's pretty short. That being said the emotional investment ramps up quickly as you struggle to protect your babies from eagles and oh god fire why this game is really hard

The lack of direction and slow pace is frustrating, rather than adding to the atmosphere. The environment is pretty, but extremely repetitive. No save function in a game like this is also infuriating. I stopped playing when I had to start from the beginning for the third time and couldn't face crawling through the dreaded 'credits tunnel' again.

A simple simulation game with a haunting soundtrack and ambient sounds that capture some of the serenity of life as a badger with her cubs. Definitely a different kind of game and a unique sim idea.

The developers said they wanted a game with a slow tempo and they even cut out gameplay ideas that diverged from this ethos. I guess they really achieved the slow tempo for sure because there is not a whole lot going on to warrant sinking hours into this game. I played it for a while and got bored since there is not much to do and the cuteness overload kinda wears thin after a while. I didn't play long enough to encounter the eagle yet. The environment is created in an interesting art style but the paths start to look very similar after a few visits.

Only buy this game if you like badgers and a relaxed play style without too much to do.

All the good things that are said about this game are true. It's beautiful and very original. I simply can't recommend spending $10 (USD) on a game that I beat in less than an hour. I also ran into several bugs with movement that nearly cost me my cubs, which was frustrating, though not gamebreaking. If there was more here, I could have overlooked it, but a short experience like this should be polished perfectly to sell for more than a dollar or 2.

Yes, nurture mode extends the gameplay, but there's no way I can commit to getting on this game every day just to feed my cubs. I realize that's a cool feature for a lot of people, but not me.

I did enjoy this game, and if the price doesn't bother you, you should absolutely get it, especially if you can get it on sale. I was on the fence for this review, but I was disappointed enough in the bugs and length that ultimately I can't recommend it for the price.

Rating 7.5/10
Overview: Adventure

+ The gameplay has you controlling a mother badger with her 5 babies following. You have to find/hunt for food to feed your babies as well as traverse the dangerous environments as you avoid harm.

+ Really loved the art style, it has a minimalistic quality to it yet feels very unique it its own way

+ The game takes place over a series of different environments each area getting progressively more dangerous and more unique. It is always an interesting experience when you reach a new area.

+Losing a baby feels sad and yet you have no choice to move along reminding you the harsh realities of nature. Very few games invoke that sense of feeling yet this game does it in such an easy way.

+ Good sense of pacing,

+No HUD, allowing for a more immersive experience

+ Free DLC to extend the games very short length

The Bad

-game doesn't do the best of jobs explaining certain gameplay elements often leaving you confused in certain areas.

-The game is very short. It will take roughly 1 hour to beat, there is however a dlc that changes up the gameplay a bit to keep you interested in a few more hours if you like.

Conclusion

This game is a perfect example of an indie game done right. You don't need super realistic graphics to make the game standout. The developers combined an interesting concept with a unique art style and made a game that I was engaged with throughout the end. Losing a baby is sad because you legitimately feel like you failed as your duty as a parent. This game pleasantly surprised me.

Shelter is a lovely survival game which has you playing as an intrepid babdgermum or badgerdad whose job it is to save your kit.

The game plays very well and looks fantastic. The soundtrack is joyous to listen to and the threats ingame tangible. Over a very short time you feel a real connection with your baby badgers and will do anything to save them.

Sadly, the game falls down on it's length, which is my only criticism. A lovely little game, but little it is, with around 1 hour for a full playthrough.

Still a fun experience!

The emotions of keeping my faimly alive through the elments of danger is only explinable by the fact that I was drunk while playing this game. As I finshed the game I only had 1 of my 5 badgers left now I know how hard it is to be monnmy a badger! Now I have fulfiled one of my lifetime goals in life.
