What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Early Access allows us to involve the community from early on in the project, meaning the players very much help shape the game. This allows us to make decisions based on what the community wants. After all, we are making the game for them, not only for ourselves.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The game is planned for release in the the second half of 2015.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Until the game leaves Early Access, it's likely that it will feature some unpleasant bugs or confusing features. With final release, we aim to deliver a more streamlined experience, including tutorials and fixes for bugs and issues the community reports via our Feedback Tracker website."”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“At present, Take On Mars is in the Beta development stage. It means that the game should not dramatically change in terms of gameplay possibilities, but we will keep adding new content and features during the Beta stage”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We intend to slightly increase the price upon the release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We listen to your feedback and we aim for very open communication. While we sometimes need to prioritize, we take the ideas and suggestions of our community very seriously. As an example, the entire robotic section of the Space Program mode was completely overhauled from a linear set of missions to sandbox style progression where technologies determine which missions are available.”

The devs Don't fix the bugs and tho it is realistic I could not play it for ages because it did not start I had to uninstall steam and every game then reinstall everything then it worked. But it so unstable. Try to load scenario CRASH try to move things in the inventory doesn't work.
Don't waste your money on this game the devs jut don't fix the bugs. wait till 1.0 and look at the reviews then make your decision.

This game has some promise, but right now it is just very shallow. There is not much here and it doesn't fell like more is on the way. This is how kerbal space program could have gone horribly wrong. There is a lot of unimportant stuff here that could be expanded upon, but not a lot of expanding upon the good ideas. The last update was in 2015, 2015! That is completely unnacceptable. Especially since there are multiplle different places in-game which say "New features in early 2016!" Well, it's june. We are half wat through 2016 and the devs didn't even bother to remove or update those messages. My last complaint is a technical one. I was using a radio thermal electric generator. It reduced to 3/4 it's original output after a very short period of time. Are you INSANE!? It even says plutonium-238 in-game an element with a half life of 88 years, not less than a day. My camera also seemed to break for no reason? Granted these may be in-game features due to weather conditions. But if they are it merely highlights another flaw in the game. It explains almost nothing to you. The only tutorial is for manned missions, which currently make up almost none of the game. This left me stranded trying to figure out how to ploay this game from the second I hit the launch button. The construction system is a well implemented idea, but again! There are almost no missions or playable parts of the game which utilize this feature. PLEASE! Devs, get it together and flesh out this game. Take a hint from KSP and improve your updates. If you are thinking of buying this game, don't, I can barely refer to this as a game. Wait until the features have been fleshed out and the game is a game. The developers should be ashamed for charging anyone to "play" this husk. I don't know if they will finish the game, but there is potential. This demo has all of the requirements to make an amazing game, they just need to try. Yes, this is really more of a demo. A paid demo promising updates, no doubt riding on the back of ksp's success. Steer clear until this demo becomes a game, if ever.

This game is over 3 years old, and still is unplayable. Dont waste your money.
Moreover, dont reward the developer for lack of effort.
This game has made so little progress that I believe we may actually land on Mars IRL before this game ever becomes enjoyable.
The videos show you doing all kinds of good stuff, but when you get in the game ther is no indication of where that fun stuff is. All the scenarios are ancient, most of them still riddled with bugs, as it seems the game mechanics dont translate backwards into old scenarios. So there is a pile of content that is essentially worthless.

Such proimise, great ideals, but zero execution. Forget this game, come back in ten years and see if you can do more than 5 minutes of scenario.

While the devs only work on the multiplayer, its kind of sad that the devs arent working on the singeplayer anymore.
They should have noticed things like, no loans or updated tutorials.

But its still not really THAT good.

The multiplayer side seems to be the main side, with new maps and such, and now the old legacy map is gone, with new decenders and things. I would recommend this to people for the multiplayer side, the singeplayer side is awfully terrible and down right boring. The game is now in its beta stages, and i was one of the few people to be on the alpha (i think, i had this game for a long time, it should have moved on. or i was always in the beta stage.) and now i see that they added a new campain for singleplayer manned survival.

Very buggy and unoptimized, still runs a solid 15 fps, for a decent pc. (with somewhat printed things)
It would be nice to have a thing for unprinting or something, because the wire barrels are really not needed.

But in conclusion this game is not half bad, (and i dont know why i waited so long to review xD)
7/10

Loved this game. Loved it so much. Helped make mods for it..played it for hours...believed in its potential, but it is now being deleted after being on my favorites list for over a year. This game could have guided the inspiration for a whole generation of future scientists and explorers alike. Thank you Bohemia for yet another unfinished backwards display of failure. You had so much potential especially with the release of the blockbuster hit the Martian, but instead of devoting the proper time and money into making a work of art that could be recognized for generations this will end up in the junkpile of unfinished attempts at true gaming/training/simulation for space exploration and better understanding of our own universe. This is the perfect example of laziness, lack of dedication, and shortsightedness that exsists around us in our daily lives on this planet that prevent us from going any further as a species. P.S. At this point the game will not even function, and dont even dare try multiplayer now....seriously dont even bother trying...its not worth your time....so sad..

RE: To Martin Melicharek (Project Lead)

Thank you for responding to my comment. I know that you the developers are working hard on this, and I want you to understand that my comments were not meant for you guys directly but specifically Bohemia Interactives lack of support to you 'the developers'. It seems to be a running joke that they give you guys just enough money and support to create something they can make some money off of, but when it comes down to having the support to actually finish something, or take it to the point of its full potential they fall short of giving the support that should be expected from a big name. I for one wish they would give you guys the resources necessary to make Take on Mars into the masterpiece it is meant to become. I am praying that your baby makes it to full adulthood, and not just that but goes on to be an example for generations to come and teach more people about our true destiny of exploration and daring bravery against the darkness of space. Get it back to a playable state, offer plans for a dedicated server tool at some point (i know lots of rewrite), 64-bit support, necessary texture compression, and I will gladly change my review. Keep up the hard work I for one believe in you guys.
Thank you, Thorn

Take on Mars is possibly one of the most unique concepts to hit the steam store in a while. It's a game, of sorts, but more than that, it's a tool for learning and understanding the challenges inherent in exploring a planet far removed from our own, as well as providing a toolbox to this end. A very well thought out toolbox at that, which includes a tech tree (recently added), Multiple survey sites, and even now includes Deimos.

You are placed in charge of the Mars Space Exploration Agency, provided a budget to build, launch and research landers, and rovers, and tasked with exploring and analysing scitentific points of interest. Completing these objectives nets you further funding. The game part comes from balancing the needs of developing technology and launching appropriate craft to the right sites.

Funding -is- tight here, so it's very easy to box yourself in on the first few tries whilst you get the hang of how it all works. For that reason I really, really advise that you read the tutorials, go and do a bit of research on the web, and study the tech tree. Work out what you need to build, and apply an objective based approach to proceedings. This is not a game for anyone who isn't extremely patient and willing to invest in a concept which as an open ended project, is very different from pretty much anything that's come before.

As a niche product though, it should be applauded, because Bohemia has created a genuinely unique experience, one that if you've the time, the will and the inclination, provides a richly rewarding and deep journey, digging into the historical background of the Red Planet, and mixing a subtle element of managing your technology whilst exploring and unearthing secrets as you go.

It's your own Mars (and asteroid belt) Exploration Program simulator.

In the game you control probes or rovers in real time (unlike in real life, where their control sequences are preprogrammed, and in emergency they are automatically put in a safe mode). It isn't only about exploring Mars, but also its moons and asteroids. You can also operate rover on Earth.

The objectives are quite repetitive (ride there, shoot photos, analyze air, soil, rocks, take a sample, all this to get funds and unlock next levels of available hardware which you will send to Mars next), but it isn't a boring game. You need to be careful to not break the equipment (or wheels), and watch out for strong wind, as small rovers and probes are quite light and fragile. It's currently in active development, so some things may still change and a new content (like sample analyze results currently having a placeholder) will be added.

It's a great game for space geeks, people who like realistic vehicle simulators, and other people who want to view Mars from rover's perspective.

I jumped, bumped my head on the ceiling... and died.
I opened a door and was crushed behind it... and died.
I tried to jump onto the back of a truck, slipped, rolled sideways down a hill, hit a rock...and died.
I took my helmet off to store it on the wall but mistakenly dropped it on the floor, it flew around the room like a cannonball eventually smashing open the airlock.... Everyone died.
