Play Diablo 2 for years and years and years. [done]
Play Diablo 3 for ~200h and dump it. [200 painful hours of shiny disappointment]
Play Path of Exile for years and years and years [to be achieved].
Ye, PoE has the nice dark touch I am looking for in a game like this (not the cartoonish bull$hit that is D3).
The Passive Skill Three looks impressive but is kind of the same... Well, I still have years and years and years to play this gem to find out more about it.
Constant updates, nice grinding, music and atmosphere.

I have to give PoE a thumbs up even though I haven't played a whole lot of it. It has a very polished Diablo 2 feel with huge levels of customization. This is a free game that actually can be played free without having microtransactions shoved down your throat. More games like this please!

Dont let my hours full you... I ve been playing standalone version for 3+ years, and all I can say is - this game is becoming even better with every new league. Even spent around 50$ just to help developers (simply looks - microtransactions, and guild stash tabs for our little group) because of the work they ve put in this gem. It gives you that old Diablo 1 and 2 dark feeling. I grew up with those games so there you go - logical step for me.

Game itself can be overwhelming for new players. Learning curve is steep, but rewarding in the end. Possibilities are immense and mind boggling because of the skill tree (over 1000 points on tree) and skill and support gems that combine very well. Its normal to get tired after couple of months or so, leave the game, then come back when new league starts (usually every 4 months).

If you are a casual player, you might find it very hard and leave soon. If you are persistant casual player (like myself) or a hardcore player, you ll enjoy every little bit of this game. Community is great and helpful, and devs llike to interact with their customers alot.

Do I recommend? From the deepest parts of my soul - YES!

Path of Exile, I dont really know where to start with this game so I guess I will start off by saying its pretty good. There are some issues with it though, I will start off by saying it is really easy. I know you can get harder difficulties eventually but that doesnt mean that the first play through should be an absolute cakewalk. You have to reach the fourth act before you can ramp up the game. The game is mercifully not pay to win, just pay to look cool. This game makes its money through cosmetics, but they are very pricey for a single set of armor and default gear looks very boring no matter the level. The colossal skill tree that this game boasts doesnt make your character feel any different. Almost all of your customization comes from gems which give you different abilities and you can modify those abilities to customize it, and to be honest I think its a really neat system. I will say that auto attacks are absolutely useless and I hear bad rumors about high level gameplay. though,The game does look and run great, and it is very atmospheric. I prefer Diablo 3 but for those who dont want to cough up the asking price I would recommend this as an alternative. I will give it a 6.5/10, its got its issues but if you can look over them its a real gem.

Path of Exile is a very fun game with alot of content and good reputation at first sight.

Yea right.

It's an ARPG with with a few classes , alot of Skillgems and support/curse gems with which you can make interesting build , with an huge skilltree to enhance and strenghten your build in addition.

This Game suffers the same metagame illness most game are infected with , you have your toptier builds , your trashtier builds and your ETA Next Patch nerf HC build which is the doom of your character if you haven't farmed sufficient currency to respec and rebuilt your character to something that hasn't been nerfed you'll most likely just start the cycle again "oh it ain't too bad , make a new character , ezpz leveling with Facebreakers".

What happens at the next patch? well most likely the same old story.

You'll level , you'll grind , and you'll eventually be forced to respec and rebuild with ingamecurrency.

It is a massive Grindfest once you reach endgame content~ish .

The question to whether or not your own fun build will suffice is the other one , the difficulty of the maps increases and people that play PoE as maingame do not struggle , because they have farmed and traded an immense amount of currency which a starter does not have.

Some will notice this earlier , some later . the conclusion is the same . it only looks like you have the freedom to do your own build. which most likely ends up in you being frustrated due to the lack of balance in the game itself.

Sure you have this big skilltree with alot of obvious choices , but the meta game is still there. If you pay attention you'll see people running 3-6 builds for endgame . The most used this expansion being Blade Vortex which is no fun imo.

In addition to that this game is the classic D3D9 title in a nutshell , benched engine on default , unplayable with AMD hardware and placebo multithreading setting ingame. yea right. D3D9 with Multithreading #2016 jokes.

You love when your Rig can handle nextgen titles on Ultra with 100~fps and play Path of Exile with dem juicy 10 fps drops when theres Fire anywhere?

You love Grinding for Hours on Hours only for your build to get nerfed next Patch?

You absolutely cannot live without lagging servers ?

And you find the utmost satisfaction in getting ignored by the support ?

If everything above and loving the marketing towards Intel + Nvidia , then give this game a go.

For everyone else , consider twice.

I am not a huge fan of this genre. However, I always creep back to this game. Really enjoy the aesthetic and fairly fair ingame payments. Not play to win at all, don't feel bad chipping a few quid their way.

Path of Exile in 2016 holds up. At first I gave the game a postive for it's "simple start" I (and many others) called this game the Diablo III game that it should've been. Hence why i gave the game postive. However, as time went on, I felt Path of Exile didn't really phase me as much as it did back then. I believe the game needed some improvements to make the game better. Those did came, however it needed more so much more. Hence the downvote on my second take on the game.

Now we come to 2016. After a few years since its launch how does it hold up now? It holds up really well. The community and development team is really involve in making this game fun for the "vintage Diablo" fans who like the gritty and horror appeal.

Now things seem to be updated in terms of it's combat, magic and rouge gameplay. Daily activites, etc. My only issue is a real ironclad social venue of sorts. It's kind of there but it's a bit clunky and needs a bit of an improvement.

If you want a Free-to-Play game with a vintage Diablo apporach. I FULLY recommend this.

If I walked up to you on the street, slathered in mayonnaise and speckled with locusts, and told you I could give you a game that was like Diablo 2 but better - you would be listening.

If I dragged my bad leg as I clumsily walked away from you, dripping mayo and locusts on the ground behind me, you would follow. All the while, I'm whispering things under my breath - "deeper customization", "incredible build variety", "great loot system"...

If I dropped my tattered pants to my ankles, squatted down and began to pile excrement on the ground below me while singing "Use Somebody" by Kings of Leon, you would certainly be close to walking away. I mean, I am singing "Use Somebody".

My point is that even in such a bizarre situation, the promise of a game that is deeper, more rewarding, more varied and dare I say... more enjoyable than Diablo 2 is too tempting to pass up. No amount of mayonnaise, locust or feces will keep you from hearing more.

Now I did say free earlier, and that's because the game is free. You know, the other reason you had to follow me down that dark alleyway.

Get on with it? Okay, sorry, I will.

If you would go to such great lengths to hear more about this game, then why would you not just click download on Steam and give it a try. I guess that was my point all along. You have no reason not to download it and try. So just uhhh, finish that BLT you're eating. The one with the mayonnaise in it.

Yeah. Okay. Now go push download. Yep. Good job. Enjoy.

Hands down one of the best games I've ever played during my 15-year plus history of video games (~850 games owned) - definitely beats Diablo III, Grim Dawn, and all other this genre's games in my opinion. Those are for casual ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, this is the real ♥♥♥♥.

Path of Exile has an amazing atmosphere, really diverse enemies and maps, incredible amounts of depth and complex, the biggest talent tree I've seen in any game by far, and thousands of hours of content - all for free! Absolutely no real money required - only cosmetic items, more stash space (which there's enough already, mind you), and more character slots (default 24 - more than enough) can be bought using real money. And the game is so complicated that even after 100h+ of game time I'm still learning tons of new stuff all the time, and I believe I keep learning for the next 500 hours at least!

The devs are also god-tier (and by that I don't mean nonexistent, but ♥♥♥♥ing awesome), which is nowadays more important than ever. None of that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t early access, paid DLC, season passes, new sequels coming out each year (Call of Duty I'm watching you), or any other "modern" video game industry ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. The devs have listened to the playerbase since the very beginning of development, and made the game the way people want it to be. They still update the game very often, and it's not just bugfixes but a lot of new content. They've already released five DLC - which all are completely free, of course, adding hundreds of hours of content. I'm sick of these ♥♥♥♥ing ♥♥♥♥♥♥ developers like No Man's Sky's or ARK's, who don't listen to their players and release some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t DLC while the game is still in early access and they're just lazy little ♥♥♥♥s who don't even develop the game anymore or fix the horrible optimization or bugs, and treat the playerbase like ♥♥♥♥. PoE's developers are on a completely different level - perfect opposite of those piece of ♥♥♥♥ developers that nowadays exist way too much.

This game should be on "most played" or "top seller" list - not some ♥♥♥♥♥♥ ARK's DLC. ♥♥♥♥ ARK, ♥♥♥♥ its developers. This is 100% honest an awesome game with awesome devs, and I was more than happy to support the developers by buying some cosmetic stuff with real money. Keep up the good work! This is what modern video game industry should be like!

Ive been playing this game since it was first conceived over 7 years ago. well over 2000 hours before steam, It is a beautiful game that blizzard wished they could have developed. Its got a splash of everything great, little issues and most of all the content updates are out of this world. I would glady pay 60$ for this game rather than D3, I want this game to have my babies.

11/10 would unplug granny for more support packs.

I don't know what Blizzard is doing or why are their heads so far up their behind, but Path of Exile is what we expected from Diablo 3 when we were waiting for it and as time went on, Diablo 3 only got worse and worse, simpler and dumber.

On the other hand it seems like with every patch, league and DLC, Path of Exile becomes a better and more mature game. It is precisely crafted for the people who love ARPGs and aren't afraid to dive deep.

It has everything you loved in Diablo 2 and sooo much more. The biggest downsides in PoE are probably the massive learning curve and the fact gameplay feels very slow and clunky in the beginning, a big reason why many people quit before they even understand it. Once you break through this entrance barrier, you can say goodbye to your social life.

Top DH in D3 Ladder and yet after trying PoE once I completetly stopped playing D3.

PoE offers so much more with the most amazing Dev team working on it.

Can only recommend.

Like Diablo II? Then get this. Didn't? Then try it anyway - for the extremely reasonable price of zero bucks you get one of the best games in the genre (the microtransactions are cosmetic or stash space, no P2W here). Highly recommended
