Hall of Grandmasters Development Update 4

For previous news articles about the Hall of Grandmasters, check out development updates One, Two and Three. Since the last update, we have succeeded in importing a handful of different Grandmasters and have been working on their AI. As we add more Grandmasters, the process gets faster because there are more building blocks to work with when setting them up. We've tried some experimental fights against a full wave of five Grandmasters. The results of one of those fights can be seen in this video.

We'll continue to import Grandmasters and to tweak the encounter. Once we have a full hall of 50 ready, we'll release the Map while continuing to add more halls as Grandmasters are submitted. If you'd like to purchase a Grandmasters pack to immortalise your own character, you can do so by pressing M in-game and clicking "Buy Points". It's the grandmaster pack on that page.

It is rare to find a Free-to-Play game that ends up Free-to-Enjoy. Path of Exile is not only available to people of all wallet sizes, it ultimately manages to best it's AAA compettitors.
Diablo 3 is dead.
Long live the new king.

Its a good co-op or solo fantasy game. It has a interesting story with fun campaigns (goals). Has great and creative enemies throughout the game. Its a fun and addictive game couldn't stop playing when I first downloaded it. If you like a fantasy game with elements, swords, archery and more of your typical fantasy game then I think this game would be for you.

As a goatman I am offended they would name one of us as a 'bearded devil'. Where do you get off GrindingGearGames referring to my people as bearded devils? At what point did you think this would be okay?

I am offended and appauled, but I did enjoy the brutal gore that this game has offered. I would play game the again despite stereotyping goatmen as bearded devils.

Simply the most in-depth Hack'n'Slash out there and the best according to me. Character customization is top-notch and replayability is huge. I have a little bit over 1k hours played on it (did not link the game to my steam account immediately) and I still have many things to discover. However, it is a "hardcore game" less accessible than Diablo 3 or others games.

- Huge passive skill tree offering in-depth character customisation
- Interesting spell customisation using gems (close to FFVII's materia system)
- Interesting trading system relying on barter only (no gold or any other in-game currency)
- Interesting crafting system allowing to modify dropped items
- Game is very skill based (rare for a hack'n'slash!)
- Very little Faceroll/OP builds, almost every build has drawbacks and strength

- Can be hard to get into: trading system can seem overwhelming and in-game mechanics are quite complicated so use of the wiki and forum is much advised
- Animation can seem clunky at the beginning and game seems to play slow at the beginning
- Player can feel like reaching a gear-ceiling at the beginning of end-game if playign self-found (much better since Forsaken Master's 1.2 update though)
- Will eat your life if you get into it...

Path of Exile is a very niche(IMO) Action RPG that is unique in more ways than it is similar to other games of the genre. High replayability, races, constant content and balance updates, and dev's that really listen to their supporters and players. This game is free, and is probably the only free to play game I've ever played that I personally believe should NOT be free. This game is easily worth at least a 20-30 dollar price tag. If you enjoyed Diablo 2 (NOT 3) then you will get more than your fair share of enjoyment from this gem of a game. 2 thumbs and big toes up!

An excellent game, before you take into consideration the fact that it's completely free. When you add that and the fact that this is a rare free-to-play which isn't pay to win with developpers that have an outstanding work ethic, it becomes amazing.

Not only is the game good, but it keeps getting better. It's a bit hard to get into with its daunting passive skill grid and obscure currency system, but the huge and very helpful community makes the introduction a breeze. This is quite simply the best hack & slash arpg I have ever played (and I've spent a lot of time on those since Diablo 1).

The only major issues I've had with this game is BSOD without a dedicated Sound Card which should have been taken care of awhile ago (I have a Sound Blaster Zx so I'm in the clear now), grinding hours on end for decent loot, and the most notable desync issues. Other than that, great hardcore ARPG at its finest.

Got leaped by Goats, rhoad from Rhoas, smashed by Vaal and touched by God.

Look at this playtime and this is only on steam statistics. I have played a bit more on the standalone client.. Iam a lost poor soul wandering in dark places..

This Game really breaks it. You will come to the point where you have to deceide if you get some sleep before work or get some levels in a new league. Its very addictive and replayable for an ARPG and its straight forwarded to partyplay where you will get the most fun out of it.
Hell then you might even start HC and show wreaclast what supremacy thru insomnia means.

Definitely one of the best RPGs I've played in a long time. It's fun, addicting, easy to get into. Once you start you'll wonder where the hours have gone just playing. I've already spent many a night just staying up until the wee hours of dawn cos I've gotten so addicted. It's pretty bad.

From the small amount of time that i have played this game, I cant get enough, too addicting, in fact its so addicting that I havnt showered in 2 days and the my family has disowned me, but hey I aint complaining, no stupid nagging for me.
And to be honest i have spent quite a fair amount of money on this game, some of the armour affects and whatnot are sweet.
No more money for me, i cant even afford to pay my board anymore
TFW game destroys your social life

So buy this game if you have no social life and dont work, because this game will suck the day away

-Devs seem to really care for their game.
-The replay value is pretty good.
-Stetically comfortable (sounds and skills effects arent overwhelming).
-Hard (if you're not used to the game it WILL make you rage).

-Some rubberbanding if you are far away from the main servers.

A very fun game and its all free, and not to mention that it is a free-to-play game that has only cosmetic items for sale, that and more storage slots for items, and character slots. That being said it gives you quite a lot of storage space as well as character slots, its almost a completly free game. I fully recommend this game to any and everybody.

This game is everything Diablo 3 should've been - a true, modern sequel to Diablo 2. And best of all, it's run by a company that actually has ethics.

Path of Exile is everything and much much more than you'd expect in the average dungeon crawler. It has all the best aspects from competing titles, and does it so well. The community is very helpful and they never bad mouth a person asking a simple question. Would play over Diablo III anyday 8.8/10

At it's core , Path of exile is a good game. It contains all of the qualities people look for in this type of rpg. That being said, it is an exercise in frustration if you do not follow it's spacific formula for success.

The most glaring problem with the game is its poor net code. You will die to desync in this game. You must train yourself to constantly be on guard for the signs that your character is not synced and try your best to mitigate it's effects. This makes hardcore leagues and races tedious and saps the fun from them. No other game of this type, or any type for that matter has ever been this bad for me. The devs are aware of this problem, but have been unable to make any progress toward a fix.

If you decide to play softcore, or get sent there from hardcore, you will deal with experience loss on death. The devs are fully aware that desync exists, they can not fix it, yet they leave a punishment mechanic in game if you die, when they can not differentiate between a deserved death, and one caused by thier poor engine. At higher levels this can mean hours of grinding wiped clean through no fault of your own.

There is no pay to win mechanic in this game. You must earn everything you need to progress through gameplay. The drop rates are well tuned, but the chance of getting anything you can actually use are so low, that you are forced to trade in order to progress once you get to the end game. This is true for a lot of games, but the problem here is you have to either watch tradechat, or use third party sites to obtain the gear that does not drop for you normally. This is time consuming and tedious.

The learning curve in this game is pretty big. There are literally millions of builds that you can end up with as you traverse through the game, but many of those builds will not be viable as you close on the endgame. The most basic rule you must follow if you want to succeed in this game is, Research, Research, Research. If you just start the game , and do not do research, it is very likely you will end up at a progression wall you can not climb. In most other games, this is not an issue, as you can take the lessons you learned, buy a respec token or whatever and fix the problems with your build. This is not the case in this game. Respecing is expensive, (in game money, you can not buy a respec for real money) So you learn that you are better off just shelving your character and starting over from scratch. with no variation in the game story, it becomes just a borefest to get back to where you were previously with your new build.

This game would get an enthusiastic Thumbs up from me if it were not for the above issues. As it stands now, I would suggest to anyone reading this to research what desync is if they do not know, and see if they have the ability to mitigate it enough for the game to be enjoyable. If you decide you can live with it, I suggest you do some deep research on the skill tree and game mechanics, before you even start playing. You can find a lot of cookie cutter builds on the forums if you do not want to theorycraft yourself.

If it were not for the desync/death punishment mechanic I would endorse this game to anyone who loved Diablo 2. Instead I will have to vote thumbs down on this, as the issues I listed will not be fixed, and just cause too much frustration as you close in on your end game goals.
