About This Game

Hell is an experiment you can't survive in Outlast, a first-person survival horror game developed by veterans of some of the biggest game franchises in history. As investigative journalist Miles Upshur, explore Mount Massive Asylum and try to survive long enough to discover its terrible secret... if you dare.

Synopsis:

In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now.

Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.

Outlast is a true survival horror experience which aims to show that the most terrifying monsters of all come from the human mind.

Features:

  • True Survival Horror Experience: You are no fighter - if you want to survive the horrors of the asylum, your only chance is to run... or hide
  • Immersive Graphics: AAA-quality graphics give players a detailed, terrifying world to explore
  • Hide and Sneak: Stealth-based gameplay, with parkour-inspired platforming elements
  • Unpredictable Enemies: Players cannot know when - and from where - one of the asylum’s terrifying inhabitants will finally catch up to them
  • Real Horror: Outlast’s setting and characters are inspired by real asylums and cases of criminal insanity

Warning:

Outlast contains intense violence, gore, graphic sexual content, and strong language. Please enjoy.

If you want a good horror game, its right here. I'm not a baby when it comes to horror games, and films, but this scared the ♥♥♥♥ out of me. I got it for 5 dollars, it was easily worth the full price.

I love the graphics. There aren't tons of jumpscares but just enough to make it not good. Yes, there is some intense/brutal parts but that's what makes this game very interesting. In some parts it gets a little confusing on what to do but after a while I could always figure it out. I really like how the story goes. I love how all of it takes place in a asylum. Its unique how they added The Walrider. I like how the game makes you think a little bit on where to go and what you're supposed to do they really put in effort into this game. I'm almost certain the second is gonna be as good or even better. So overall this game is a great game, I definitely recommend this game its mainly a horror game but has like a maze like scene to it which makes it awesome.

Outlast is a brilliant horror game with great scares and dark atmosphere, enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. With modern graphics and nothing but the Shift button to help you escape, it really is a game you don't want to stop playing.
Having said that, unfortunately my first run of the game took me just over 4 hours to complete without collecting the collectables, and I estimate with collecting them it would take around 6, so it's a short game but what horror game isn't these days?
Comparing to more popular Steam horror games such as Amnesia, Outlast is more visually distressing and some sights will want you asking for more.
Overall I enjoyed my experience into the groesome "abandoned" asylum and it has definitely made me excited for Outlast 2.

I really wish the steam recommendation system had something of a middle ground, because I'm not sure if I can truely recommend this game to everyone. Outlast is a game with interesting ideas but falls somewhat flat when it comes to execution. I'll just confess right away that I never got around to finishing it, so I don't really know anything about the ending or possible plot twists, therefore I won't dwell on the story too much. Still, I got pretty far and I think I played it enough to share what I thought of it.

Outlast is yet another first person indie-horror game but with such impressive production value it rivals triple-A games and even puts some to shame, especially for the time it released. It looks great with its particle effects, lighting, shadowcasting etc. Outlast is quite the looker, except for one thing that I'll get to later.

While in most other horror games today you get a flashlight to use in the darkness, Outlast gives you a hendheld camera with night vision. This is by far my favourite aspect of the game. The night vision filter looks incredibly convincing, even in the way people's eyes light up. But what is absolutely the most immersive and interesting aspect of the game is in fact the only way Outlast breaks from the norm, and it doesn't even go all the way with it. How cool would it have been if the entire game was from the camera's perspective, like those found footage movies like The Blair Witch Project, or better yet, Grave Encounters. But no, you can put the camera away and play just like every first person horror game ever made. The camera is essentially nothing but a glorified flashlight, a cool flashlight, but not much more than that. Oh, and you can get achievements when you film certain scenes. That's it. What a wasted opportunity.

Gameplay wise, Outlast boils down to your standard sneaky runny hidey affair. Sneak around try not to get caught, and if you do you run away and hide under a bed or in a locker, then watch as the enemies conveniently check every hiding spot except the one you're in. Seriously, every time! Rinse, repeat until the end of the game. Sometimes you're sent to go push a button somewhere and you notice there's a locker in the same room. Gee, I wonder what I have to do... I'll be honest, I don't like this style of gameplay. I dread every encounter not because I'm scared, but because I just find it annoying. That's probably why I never got around to beating the game, it grows dull. And yes, Amnesia had it too, and I love Amnesia, probably because there was an interesting dynamic of safety and danger between being in the light and in the dark. Outlast does none of that. Using night vision doesn't even give you away like a flashlight would. And can we cut this whole "no way to defend yourself" crap already? It's getting old. I know we're not playing as a trained soldier here, but anyone can pick up a weapon of some sort and wack away at the nasties. A fire axe, a stick with a nail in it, anything. Hell, anyone in their right mind would do anything possible to defend themselves in this situation. This garbage shatters my suspension of disbelief and worse still, causes the game to become stale and frustrating.

Anyway, let's talk positive again. I love the setting. Creepy mental asylums are a cliche because they work. There's a ton of detail in the environment and some impressive lighting, and this later part where you're outside in the rain where it's pitch black pushes all my horror loving buttons. I actually enjoy Outlast more when I'm not being chased, when I'm just walking around the dark corridors or thrudging through the sewers waist deep in waste. Atmosphere, this game has lots of it, so soak it in. Let the batteries of your night vision run out and try to find your way around, that's my favourite way of playing.

Sound design, an important factor in any horror game, and Outlast drops the ball on this one I'm afraid. Sound effects are muffled, and I'm not really a fan of the constant gibbering of the main character, as if the game is telling me to be scared. "Spookyscary" music plays when encountering some enemies which doesn't help when I'm supposed to be using my ears to tell if the guy is there or not. This wouldn't be a big deal if you could turn it off, but there's no audio options. No option to change the volume of the music or sound effects, in a game on pc, with such production value? Downright baffling.

So what you're probably wondering is if Outlast scared me at all. Nope, not at all. I'm not trying to play the tough guy here, but it just didn't, sorry. I loved the creepy atmosphere, I liked the quiet time, but being chased only annoyed me. I don't scare easily though, so take that with a grain of salt.

TLDR; Outlast has great graphics and atmosphere, but the chase sequences become stale fast. Maybe would have worked better for me as a walking simulator. The night vision camera is a good idea, but not enough is done with it to set it apart from other indie horror games. I guess I'll give it a recommendation because it's not a bad game really.

Oh yeah, about the graphics thing that annoyed me. Film grain! Stop putting this crap in games. It adds nothing and only makes everything look worse. I hate it and it sucks, so stop it! (or at least make it optional)

I would like to say, coming into this I thought this would just be another cheap-jumpscqary horror game... oh boy was I wrong. I dont get scared easily and this game surely threw that out the window - yes it does have some jumpscares but It is also scary due to amazing use of sound and build up of suspence. This is truly one of the best horror games I have played, and thats not something I usarly say. Due to me liking the game, I got the DLC... this did not dissapoint AT ALL! Just as scary and amazingly crafted as the other one! If you take my advice, if you are any bit interested with horror, Get This Game! It is a masterpiece and you will enjoy every bit of it - just make sure you have a good computer cause the graphics are also amazing (cough cough UDK cough cough...).

I bought and started to play this game a year back (Key word: Started.) However, my computer broke on me and after a year of waiting, I got on a different computer and installed the game again (The only thing I ask about is, why hadn't I reinstall everything sooner?) But as I started a new game and started playing I was excited to be back and tackle this game (This very exciting game!) and I believe I am nearly at the end the game and once I beat Outlast, I'll probably get the upcoming sequel Outlast 2. I also recomend others to play this very fun game wether it be on steam,PS4, or the Xbox One (And a fun fact: I spent 2 out of the 17 hours of gameplay in a locker hiding from Walker.) Good game, 10/10 (Im not exaggerating) Gg no re.

It's easier to honestly and fairly review this game in retrospect a few months after finishing it than after you've played for twenty minutes, so here goes.
If you like horror, this game is probably for you. It isn't wildly original in terms of environment, and the story is bearable. It is extremely well designed and I was never confused where to go, which is usually a good way of knowing how well-thought out a game's layout is. The jumpscares usually come when you least expect them and seldom when you do expect them.
The game is absolutely terrifying for about the first thirty minutes, but it starts to lose a bit of momentum after that point. My main problem with it is this one villain who kills you more quickly than all the others and just pops up everywhere. He quickly lost any scare value and became a complete nuisance. It was frustrating to have to deal with him, but I found it worthwhile to finish the game despite his prescence.
In conclusion, Outlast is a must-play if you enjoy good jumpscares and fantastic atmosphere. It was quite a blast, it made me straight up scream, and I do not regret it in the slightest.

Never understood people who write tons of text to express simple things.

You should know only one thing about this game.

It's spooky.

And I mean: spooky walls, spooky sounds, spooky enemies, spooky ugly mugs of those enemies, spooky darkness, spooky doors, spooky valves, spooky windows, spooky beds, spooky ladders, spooky boxes, spooky floors, spooky blood, spooky violence, spooky body parts, spooky scissors, spooky cameras, spooky clothes, spooky absence of women, spooky toilets (the spookiest I've ever seen), spooky monitors, spooky water, spooky fires, spooky bricks, your steps are spooky as well.

Everything is spooky there for sure.

Outlast is a survival horror game created by Red Barrels. This game sets on fictional asylum, investigating the Murkoff Industries about the experiments. You play as Miles Upshur, a journalist, trying to expose the truth about Murkoff's plans. Let's talk about the game, you cannot fight back, all you need to do is to hide and run away from those creepy deranged human. Also, you have a night vision camera to guide through darkness BUT you need a battery to use a night vision, so use it well or you will have to find batteries if you are running out of battery. Outlast's setting is dark yet creepy soundscape, that gives you an immersive experience of the game (if you are playing at night with headphones and no lights on XD). The gameplay time, it's about 2 - 6 hours if you are searching for documents and notes. The backstory seems to be interesting about what happen during and before the events of the game if you are reading the documents. The story, I don't know about it, I'd say it is average, better than generic. The most annoying sections are finding three keys for a key(yo dawg) or opening a door, it's a rinse a repeat process.

+Pros
+ Dark and Creepy atmosphere
+ Forgot to mention, jumpscares
+ Detailed graphics running with Unreal Engine 3 (not bad for an indie developer)
+ Chase scenes are heart pumping
+ Story
+ Controls

-Cons
- 3 keys sequence throughout the story
- Ending of the game

Overall, this game is recommended if you want to sign up for it. It is not recommended if you have a heart related sickness or phobia of the dark. The only thing that frustrates me is finding 3 keys sections. The game is still the best horror game I have ever experienced. I will post a review of Whistleblower DLC soon. Also I am going to thank Sparky for giving this game as a gift last year December.

So I saw this game on a let's play from pew die pie and was very impressed. I must have forgotten about the ending and bought it for myself. I was genuinely scared at moments and very intrigued ... And then I got to the ending and literally yelled....WHAT THE ♥♥♥♥. I was so ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and I almost gave up on everything outlast . then I thought to myself . I know the ending was ♥♥♥♥ING TERRIBLE... But it was a very enjoyable to get there overall this game way top notch.

Amazing game.Interesting story, perfectly detailed scenes.
Finally, a game where hero does not beat it all.

I`d say it is worth the price (currently $ 20), but since its been out for some time + it already has DLC and rumours suggesting a continued development, I`d suggest you to look for it on the sale.
