About This Game

Hell is an experiment you can't survive in Outlast, a first-person survival horror game developed by veterans of some of the biggest game franchises in history. As investigative journalist Miles Upshur, explore Mount Massive Asylum and try to survive long enough to discover its terrible secret... if you dare.

Synopsis:

In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now.

Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.

Outlast is a true survival horror experience which aims to show that the most terrifying monsters of all come from the human mind.

Features:

  • True Survival Horror Experience: You are no fighter - if you want to survive the horrors of the asylum, your only chance is to run... or hide
  • Immersive Graphics: AAA-quality graphics give players a detailed, terrifying world to explore
  • Hide and Sneak: Stealth-based gameplay, with parkour-inspired platforming elements
  • Unpredictable Enemies: Players cannot know when - and from where - one of the asylum’s terrifying inhabitants will finally catch up to them
  • Real Horror: Outlast’s setting and characters are inspired by real asylums and cases of criminal insanity

Warning:

Outlast contains intense violence, gore, graphic sexual content, and strong language. Please enjoy.

The hours on record represent the time it took me to attempt to play the game. Basically, I paid full price for a game I'm too afraid to play.

Having 42 hours on record and 100% achievements on this game, I think I can provide a useful review. This is a great game and excels at what it was made for. That said, it is not for everybody. Thus, I shall be listing what to and what not to expect from it.

What to expect:
- Survival horror: there is no fighting (on your part), running and hiding is the aim of the game.
- Jump scares: yes, it's a survival HORROR for a reason. Keep a spare pair of underwear available when you are playing this game.
- Explicit and dark: violence, gore, vulgar language, some nudity and sexually related incidents all play a part in creating the dark, horrifying atmosphere of Outlast.
- Interesting storyline and background information: The storyline has a bit of a twist in the tale, things aren't exactly as you expected them to be. Also, with all the notes and documents one collects in this game, one gets a decent amount of background information which helps with the atmosphere of the game, develops the plot (and player understanding thereof) and gives the player insight as to the nature of the silent protagonist, as well as some of the antagonists you'll be facing.

What not to expect:
- Hours of replay value: your first playthrough will probably be about 5-6 hours and the DLC about 1-2 hours. As the game progression is always the same, there is little reason to play it again (with the exception of wanting to get achievements).
- Competitiveness: There is no form of multiplayer or leaderboards of any kind.
- Something suitable for children (you should have picked that up by now)
- Sunshine and roses
- Clean underwear
- Being able to sleep at night (slightly exaggerated)

I absolutely loved this game and highly recommend it to anyone that is a fan of the horror genre, whether it be movies or games. I hope the information listed will help you in your decision of whether or not to purchase this game.

Happy Gaming!

WELL HOLY ♥♥♥♥!
Yep, I probably said this many times while playing this game. What a nice way to kick off a review right? Let's get into it.
So, Outlast is a first person horror game in (mostly) see-through-camera perspective.

With breath-taking jumpscares you get right into this glorious and disturbing adventure by getting the job to inpsect the Mount Massive Asylum, this criminally insane (partly) abandoned Asylum sets the atmosphere of this game fairly... well f*cking creepy. It was originally run by Nazi Germans to conduct researches for the USA, but 1971 it was finally closed - caused by the brutal murder of three scientists.

Enough spoilers, let's look at it graphically. I must say, aesthetically this game indeed serverd a great job of giving you the shivers... from dark creepy places to corpse-filled bloody rooms, it has all the horror classics you can imagine... well let's forget about the forest-cliché. Story-wise, I am... fairly dissapointed. Excitement was not really built up, the storyline was pretty casual but I guess that's a matter of taste, right? Controls were casual, artwork was great, overall a pretty shivering horror game, but definetely nothing for people with weak nerves.

Outlast is a true horror game. This game scared me more often than many horror films to date. If you want to experience the fear and adrenaline of running through dark hallways with an injured leg while being chased by men that can only be described as nightmares incarnate, then you must play this game. There are plenty of horrific characters you meet along the way and a false sense of hope around every corner and at each door. Please, do yourself a favor and play this EXPERIENCE. As a sidenote i just finished the dlc Whistleblower and it was well executed too. I give this game a 10/10.

The music, graphics, and style all set the tone very well, and it’s an immensely solid
title, deserving of being famous for its high quality.

Outlast is without a shadow of a doubt the scariest game I have ever played. It sets a perfect tone, its wickedly atmospheric and despite a corny storyline/setting the scares are perfectly crafted. The gore is graphically wonderful, as are the disturbing characters you meet along the way. Its a tough ending to take but the journey to get there was a brilliant experience which is well worth putting yourself through if you think you can handle it...

Outstanding. Outlast is filled with so many terrifying enemy chases and jump scares that you may have trouble sleeping. Considering its price the game is a little short (6 hours first playthrough) but it is a memorable experience. Make sure to turn off the lights and turn the volume up if you will play. Not for the faint of heart.

Best male reproductive organs in a game ever. I felt like I was constantly being molested by lunatics charged with indecent exposure.

This is my first somewhat serious review so bare with me for a bit.

I will be honest with you people who read this and say that Outlast is a great game but it sort of cheats its way a bit to it a tiiinnny bit.
I know some of you may call me some indescribable titles that I do not know at the moment. However,
I do not dislike this game at all, it's definitelly a fun game and one of the better or maybe best Horror games out there on Steam. I love its story, its dark and gruelly characters, and just the atmosphere to it a bit. I will point out what I found to be good / wonderful in this game and what I found to be rather lacking a bit.

The story itself is good and firm. You're basically a journalist who wishes to uncover what lies beneath this ever-so-mysterious Asylum. It may sound cliche to those veteran indie horror game players out there but it has a few twists to it. I will not spoil it for you however, that is for you to experience yourself.

The character may not talk, but the villains will do the talking for you. When I mean villains, I do not only mean those who are the 'monsters' of the asylum, but also those who work in the asylum. They do some very bad things in this game that you wouldn't believe. And they don't even have to lift a finger, they're gone. But,
What is left behind are the horrible results of what they have done in there. All part of the plot really. I'm sure you'll be interested.

Running from Point A to Point B has never felt so uneasy before. Yes, this game has its moments where you have to backtrack in some parts, HOWEVER, they are not long and tedious so don't you worry about that unless you are one of those who EEAAAASSSSE their way through the dark hallways, then maybe you need to change it up a bit.

Now this is the part where I would like to point out its minor/not-so-major cheat. The dark atmosphere in the Asylum in the game is great but sometimes they will like to put in an occasional jumpscare for no apparent reason. Imagine if you were focused on watching TV and then your girlfriend/boyfriend smacks your cheek with chocolate syrup out behind you. You will 9/10 get scared, you will 7/10 maybe get annoyed, but you will always end up liking it for some reason (maybe because it was chocolate syrup, whose not to like chocolate syrup?)

Sometimes jumpscares may be a bit, but a random chase part may be you think you know you will be safe but the game puts in the dramatic chase music anyways. It doesn't really bother me that much. I mean, it does make me yelp a bit but sometimes... I just groan a bit on the inside because I just wish to finally reach the next checkpoint.

Overall really...
The game is still indeed very scary to those who like to be chased around by psychotic maniacs (I don't know why people actually enjoy getting thrills from creepy dudes chasing you sometimes but...) if I were to give this game a Game Grumps, it would be definitely be out of 7 asses. (Perhaps that joke is too old now... Ah well)

Truly best horror game by far on Steam right now in my opinion. Definitely worth the money. Spooky, Scary and lots of tension builds up in this game and i'm not the type to get scared to easily. But Outlast succeeded and surpassed the cheap jump scares that the horror genre is riddled with tese days. For this game gets a Holy ♥♥♥♥! A!

Terrifying. This displaces "Dark Corners of the Earth" as the scariest video game I've ever played. Vertigo, claustrophobia, body horror, viscera, and a constant sense of tension.
