About This Game

Hell is an experiment you can't survive in Outlast, a first-person survival horror game developed by veterans of some of the biggest game franchises in history. As investigative journalist Miles Upshur, explore Mount Massive Asylum and try to survive long enough to discover its terrible secret... if you dare.

In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now.

Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.

Outlast is a true survival horror experience which aims to show that the most terrifying monsters of all come from the human mind.

  • True Survival Horror Experience: You are no fighter - if you want to survive the horrors of the asylum, your only chance is to run... or hide
  • Immersive Graphics: AAA-quality graphics give players a detailed, terrifying world to explore
  • Hide and Sneak: Stealth-based gameplay, with parkour-inspired platforming elements
  • Unpredictable Enemies: Players cannot know when - and from where - one of the asylum’s terrifying inhabitants will finally catch up to them
  • Real Horror: Outlast’s setting and characters are inspired by real asylums and cases of criminal insanity

Outlast contains intense violence, gore, graphic sexual content, and strong language. Please enjoy.

This is by far the best survival horror I've ever played! The atmosphere, the music, and its original storyline is amazing in this chilling adventure. As you investigate Mount Massive Asylum, you are on the edge from the moment you begin to the very end. Repeated playthroughs are always fun for this game too. In all honesty I'd give this game a 10/10, because it's just THAT good. It doesn't have to be scary, but a feeling of calmness is very rare for this game. Also, try out the DLC (Whistleblower), it's a tiny bit shorter than the main game but it still gets your heart pumping. Someone will keep calling you darling, too.

Do us all a favor and play this game with headphones, in the dark, by yourself, and of course, with a can of vanilla coke and some chips. You'll thank me later or you'll haunt me for the rest of your life and the remainder of mine.

You play as this one dude that has camera, but smarter than the dude with a camera on the Slendarman games. You walk into this Asylum to investigate, despite knowing the dangers you'll face, you decided to bring just camera. No knife, no bandage, nothing to defend yourself. You continued walking towards the gate and into the building. The offices look pretty decent, decent enough that you can actually work in it, but you are an investigator, not an office worker.

The guy you're playing as seems to have an history about murder and rarely being surprised by dead bodies. Truth be told, you don't have a memory about your past. You're one of the protagonist who can live and finish the game without knowing you're very own history.

You meet several people, knowing that they are from an insane asylum, you believed what they say anyways and followed their order. Some want to kill you, some just ignore, and some just ask you to do stuff for them. Congrats, you just became the errand boy for them.

When halfway through the game you notice, you started to wonder, why he decided to continue exploring alone rather than going back outside and telling the police. You got enough evidence when you walked to the asylum, what else does the police need to be persuaded? The guy was one of the rejected members of the Mystery Gang where they try solving the case without the police help, that what the guy is trying to prove them that he is a capable member of the Mystery Gang. After he solves the problem, then he call the police.

In the end, you didn't call the police, you called a military group and you got F***** bad

(jk here's the real review)

Outlast does a great job with it environment. The place itself is scary enough that you want to quit the game, when you step outside your car. The people you encounter seems to be easy to avoid by just going far enough out of their AI pathing to make them stop chasing you. Some of the scares are quite predictable and easy to avoid. The story itself is pretty good and has a deeper meaning than you originally thought.

To summarize everything
You're part of the Mystery Gang
Atmosphere is great
The people in the asylum is stupid
You're smarter than the guy in Slenderman

My recommendation for this game: YES/YES

Getting too much sleep? I've got the perfect game for you!

A defenseless protagonist, an asylum full of psychopaths and some seriously ****ed up imagery. Let the nightmares begin!

Reviews and reviewers make me angry. Don't read this. Buy the game and make your own mind up. Then have a good think about how the creative industries as a whole use reviewing to part you from your cash. Theft really is not the word for it.

I like a good scare. This game is good at scaring. However it is not the immersive terrifying experience that some (paid?) reviewers have been prone to bill it as. The best games ever produced had fantastic scripts written by very talented people balanced with superior game mechanics that match the intended experience. This feels like its a level below that. It relies on in your face frights and atmospheric noises just a little too much whilst neglecting, a little too much, a truly terrifying script/game design that will fully engage your imagination.
After a few hours the scared stiff breathing of the main protagonist gets more than a little annoying. The inablity to fight back is, to begin with, a treat to get the adrenalin running. However I'm often brought out of the game immersion to simply get annoyed at the noises he makes along with the lack of retaliation or even... I don't know! maybe effin knock something over behind you as you run or hit that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with a plank in the dark as he comes through the door. DUUUUDE do something to survive you moron. I have more than once died trying to get through an open door in a hurry but then again at this point I barely care if he lives or dies. Terror has been suspended by annoyance.
One immersion breaking point is watching the characters move in the dark, sure footed and as if the room is brightly lit.
It often becomes apparent that the other characters follow a rigid script that can be exploited, until you realise that it's not exploiting, this is simply the game. AI feels like it is almost non existent. The plot feels like it too obviously advances in a number of set scenes. You intuitively know when you are safe to run around because you know that you have just 'finished' the latest scene.
This could have been the single most scary game ever released but it is unable to sustain fear due to there being so many immersion breaking points.
All of the parts are there, quality graphics, quality sound, quality programming but it misses on bringing all this together. Not by far, but enough to make this game good, not great. Once again hype and fanboy aggression trumps fact and for some ruins the expectation.
Having said this the game is very playable. Play it in a dark room, with decent sound then engage your imagination and it should give you some nice chills/scares.

Finally it should be noted that having the camcorder light as your only real tool is not very original. It is a variation on a number of games, perhaps the most obvious being Alan Wake. Its inclusion produces a wry smile to those of us who have played video games on dozens of platforms, for decades. We just keep seeing the same music, films and games coming around in shiny new packages to suit the next generation. Sad really but a lesson we all learn as we transition into grumpy old ............

This is one of those reviews that I wish there was a middle option between recommending or not recommending this game.

So after beating this game I have mixed feelings about it, I mean the atmosphere is fantastic and an abandoned asylum full of psychos works perfectly as a horror game setting, the sound design is also impressive and the camera feels like a second main character that made the game more different than your typical horror game.

But even though the game has terrifying sections and moments that are scarred in my mind, it doesn't have much else going for it in terms of gameplay other than holding the W key untill an enemy encounetr occurs then play hide and seek rinse and repeat and for me it really gets repetitive to the point where I just wanted to beat the game, there isnt any sidetracking or any exploration and nothing for you to watch out for except files and batteries.

Another major thing that I didn't like is the enemy encounters, the enemy AI is so predictable it makes some of the encounters downright not scary for me, I mean guranteed if you get in a hiding spot without the enemy seeing you, you're 100% safe which just breaks the immersion for me, not to mention its very easy avoiding the enemy and getting away from them.

its a decent horror game that has its moments but once you know its limitations it just stops being scary... Buy it on a sale.

oh and ♥♥♥♥ those jumpscares, there is a ♥♥♥♥ ton of them for no reason other than cheap scares, also ♥♥♥♥ those open X things to turn on Y to get into a certain place missions, I hate these objectives in horror games they're just filler.

Outlast is incredibly inventive, a game capable of scaring the absolute crap out of anyone, horror addict or not. The creativity shown in the plot of the game within itself, especially in the DLC, is what keeps me coming back to it.
I'll admit, I had watched Markiplier play Outlast in the past, both the DLC and original game, yet even then, the scares hadn't lost their effect on me.

In English
Outlast can be daunting since its first minutes. With an incredible ambience, endowed with great graphics (though less demanding in terms of hardware) and a suitable soundtrack to its climate of terror and constant tension. About the gameplay, there is no fighting, just run and hide. The protagonist is an investigative reporter who goes to a psychiatric hospital after an email with complaints against the institution. There he encounters a "strange" situation with police vehicles abandoned on the door and decides to find a way to enter the hospital. From there follow many scares, despair and terror, all under the gaze of the protagonist and especially your camera, which has the night function and helps a lot to create a scary atmosphere. As said in previous reviews, this camera and events remind us a bit of REC film, with little difference, because the enemies are internal of the institution (and it is worth remembering that not all the crazy pose threats, but some ...) .
Excellent from start to finish, a great horror game!
I did not play the expansion, but I intend to do it as soon as possible!
