Last Action Hero™ Just Released!

Last Action Hero™ has just been released!

Last Action Hero™ (1993): "Did somebody say action?" This action-packed pinball powerhouse harbors the license for the summer blockbuster hit movie of the same name. The table's feature filled design was created by Tim Seckel, Joe Kaminkow, Ed Cebula, and John Borg. This game completely captures the intensity, comedic tones, and cast of characters from the film. Notable playfield sections include the motorized Super Crane™, game controlled magnets which activate during multiball events, the Ripper lane which accelerates a shot ball on returns, and the Smart Missile button above the slick black colored gun-shaped launcher. 5,505 units of this table were produced.

This I think would've been my first bad review. I mean don't get me wrong the game is awesome which is why its getting thumbs up. But your menu SUCKS! I loved the old menu and the fact that you got to see the machine. Now you got this.....I don't know what to call it because i can't say what i want to say here. The game is awesome though it is a definate buy. But the menu flat out sucks monkey butt.

Geocities called. They want their interface back.

It's not *just* that it's hideous (and it certainly is hideous), it's that it doesn't solve a single problem and introduces new ones. The logos are unreadable. The pinballs are distracting. The icons are meaningless. What the hell are those arrows doing on the right? The text is too small everywhere. Moving a cursor around when using a gamepad? Is this King's Quest? The full list of tables are hidden in a small icon in the corner.

I am floored at how ugly, cumbersome, and UNUSABLE the new UI is.

To put it simply, this game is *the* game to own if you like pinball.

For a start, there are more than 50 tables (and counting) available, with one - Tales of the Arabian Nights - free to start you off. The tables are hugely varied and are sure to include something that appeals. A generous demo system means you can try tables before you buy and solid DLC systems mean you can buy the ones you like either in basic sets or "season packs".

The physics are as good as anyone has ever managed for pinball on PC. For such a complicated (and on-going) emulation, the bugs are relatively few and far between - there certainly are some, but the game is updated regularly and the tech support team seem friendly and quick to respond to issues.

Regular tournaments, table releases and ongoing leaderboards mean there is plenty to keep you coming back, and while not all the tables are solid gold classics, many of the best tables from the history of pinball can be found here from EMs like Central Park and Big Shot to later, deluxe tables like Attack from Mars and The Twilight Zone.

This game gets a warm reccomendation and, if you like pinball - especially real life pinball - then it's simply an essential purchase.

I absolutely love this game, but the recent UI update has completely ♥♥♥♥ed it up. Navigating this new menu is an absolute nightmare. I remember seeing this in beta and it was extremely buggy, so I changed back. Now it's out of beta, and nothing has been fixed? AND we can't go back to the previous UI? What a load of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t.

Even if you can deal with the new UI, imagine how angry you would be if you had a good game going, and then it crashed. Well that's been happening ever since this new update, sometimes the game just gives up and crashes. FarSight, fix this piece of crap.

It *was* a great game, and I had just started playing and purchasing tables (the first two seasons, Pro editions). But they pushed out a new UI that, in addition to being terrible, also destabilized the game to the point where it was unplayable due to crashing. The devs released the beta of this UI in January, and ignored all of the criticism, then pushed it live 3 days ago. Thankfully, I was still in my Steam refund window and got my $80 worth of purchases refunded. But I'd strongly advise staying away from this game.

So here goes my review for this great game! I've sunk 200+ hours into Pinball Arcade and it's been mostly worth it.
Here's a few points based on popular criticisms of this game:
1. Pinball Arcade's ball phsyics aren't realitstic.
My response: Exactly my point! I DO NOT want 100% realistic physics in my pinball games. Why? My small city has a pinball arcade with a few dozen tables so I know what that feels and looks like . As a medicore pinball fan who doesn't have the time or motivation to play the same table 1000 times to get better I'm here to tell you that YOU DO NOT WANT 100% REALISTIC PHYSICS...unless you're a pinball genius or whatever. It's brutal. You won't have any fun. I'm lucky if I can last 5 minutes.
That's not to say that some tables in PBA like Adaams Family or Twilight Zone can't end in a d*** hurry as well but overall the phsyics are much more forgiving from table to table than The Real Thing (TM).
2. The new UI is horrible.
My response: Actually from my experience I was acutally SURPRISED and GRATEFUL that they instituted this new change. Is it perfect? Are the menu's acutally easier to nagivate the first time you see it? Heck no! It's still a far far cry from spending 30 seconds scrolling through all 50 tables trying to find your favorite one in the OLD UI. I wish the picutres they used to show the names of each table were a little easier to identify in the new list. That's change for you. It's not always better. Also that reviewer who said the new UI looks like it was upscaled from 640x480 needs to go back and find a neutral state of mind when saying such things. It's actually really easy on the eyes. I like it.
The only real complaint I have with the new UI is that it's still clunky trying to enter your initals when you've reached a new high score. That's about it.
3. The table packs cost too much.
This one is isn't clear cut to me. I own all 5 table packs, 2 of which (I think anyway I didn't actually count) I have as the pro versions. I'm not mad that the pro versions cost more because I have little need for multiple colors for my pinballs and I don't need to have access to the cheat menu's. They're frills for me. No one is forcing you to buy them.
As for the non pro table packs, I plunked down the $30 for each season in phases. One per month. I have a part time job and loved the heck out of the first 2 seasons I purchased so I waited about a month between each purchasing the next seasons. $30 a month is way less than most people's monthly cell phone bills. Deal with it.

Yes the Star Trek Next Generation table has some major bugs. I've played a few hundred games so I know what they look like and how they can skew your high scores, make dumb stuff happen, etc, etc. Some of them completely crash the table (not the game per se, you can still quit the table and restart) but that's rare. Ultimately I'm playing the tables to have fun and don't care that these bugs ruin competitive scoring or whatever. The main thrust of the gameplay is enough for me.

Are the graphics ultra gorgeous and realistic as people expect? Not really. I do like some of the lighting options in the DirectX 11 mode but they get in the way of the gameplay and can make a shot you're aiming for hard to see at times . I mainly use the directx9 "plain graphics mode" and that's fine by me. I playing to have fun with the rules and mechanics of the game. Pretty graphics are just an extra bonus.

I usually play the same 4 or 5 tables but every so often I try a new table or one I haven't played in awhile and find myself having a good time. I prefer the tables made in the 90's that have those nice dot matrix displays and more realstic sounds but found myself playing the 80's tables like Whirlwind that have the digits only displays lately. There is plenty plenty more enjoyment to squeeze out of the $170 (gasp!) I paid for all this marvelous fun! :)

Ironically, the other big PC pinball game maker Pinball FX2 hasn't impressed me. I have played a number of those tables and didn't find them as satisfying. I actually find them *harder* than PBA if only because there are too many modes and objectives to accomplish before you can beat/clear everything. That and extra balls are harder to come by in some of them and I need a little more leeway than what they offer.

I anxoiusly await the debut of Season 6. Keep up the good work Farsight Studious. You have earned a loyal pinball fan here and I am very grateful for what you've produced!!

Anyway that's my opinion on Pinball Arcade at the moment. Hope it was useful to you good or bad! :)

6/20/2016: Eh, things seem to be chugging along, albiet slowly...We'll see what happens.

6/19/2016: "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad." - Shigeru Miyamoto, 2012

What the heck happened? Farsight, you have GOT to get your act together, otherwise we won't be seeing anymore Pinball Arcade, let alone the Stern Pinball Arcade on Steam! Zaccaria and Pro Pinball are competing against you right now. They know what they're doing with their games.

The new UI was NOT ready for release because of its issues which needed to be fixed, not to mention many of the older ones that have not been fixed for YEARS. Crashes and bugs should be the #1 priority among everything else. I don't mind better functionality or new tables, but darn it, FIX YOUR GAME, and DO IT RIGHT! As a dedicated pinball player, I feel embarrassed and frustrated to see what this has become for both the community as well as the entirety of pinball. I even test this game for these unfixed issues, dangit!

However, this review doesn't mean "Don't Buy This Game." It means that the lack of bug fixes are simply a wake up call. I'll happily change my review again once things have settled down and the game being more bug-free than ever before.

To those unaware of what I'm talking about, I've compiled a heavy-duty Master List of Issues within both DX9 and DX11 Pinball Arcade. Some of those bugs carry over to mobile and the next-gen console ports of Pinball Arcade. We PC users are not alone experiencing these issues. Have fun reading the entirety of the 300+ issues:

ORIGINAL: Definitely one of the closest games to the real thing, alongside the Pro Pinball ULTRA Editions. The tables within may seem pricey at first, but when you consider replay value, it's totally worth paying for the Season Packs. Whether to get the Pro version is up to you, though, so choose wisely.

This game has helped me become close to mastery; pinball on Steam is basically the only thing I have where I live. There aren't very many machines around me, so this game, among others (although not perfect in gameplay), and alongside PAPA's tutorials, really help me bring my skill level up to a point where I can play competitively. Below is me getting a really good score on an actual Simpsons Pinball Party.

Here's the thing Farsight....
I love Pinball Arcade, I truly do. I have over 300 games on Steam of all genres, but *this* is what I keep returning to. I have every table you've released for it barring two. In your eternal battle with Zen I've defended and supported you time and time again.

Then you pull this crap on us.

Six month ago you beta'd a new UI and asked for customer feedback. And boy howdy did you receive it. Beautiful splash screens of individual pinball machines were replaced by a cluttered screenfull of muddy low res Zen-ripoff icons. Your iconic "Pinball Wizard" inspired guitar riff bgm was replaced by the actual "Pinball Wizard" track, only chopped up and looped past the point of obnoxiousness. Menu navigation became more convoluted and mouse-heavy, making things awkward and unintuitive for controller only players like me. All of these issues and so much more were pointed out to you time and again by dedicated Steam users during the Beta period.

Then this weekend, I start my favorite game on Steam to see that this UI has apparently "passed" the Beta stage, although one wouldn't know it, since *none* of the aforementined issues nor the plethora of others reported to you have been fixed. Not only that, there appears to be no way to revert to the classic, perfectly workable UI. In other words, you asked us for our opinion, pretended to listen for six months, then basically flushed our opinions down the toilet and shoved this new UI down our unsuspecting throats anyway.

This is my very first review on Steam and I hate to spend it thumbs downing one of my favorite games of all time, but that's exactly what I'm doing. You've showed what esteem you hold for your customers, Farsight, so allow us to return the favor. I hope you enjoy reaping the whirlwind you've sown over a UI that you "fixed" when it was nowhere near "broken" in the first place.

BIG UPDATE 6/17/2016:

Some idiot at the company decided to upgrade the menu to a sloppy, Valu-soft menu from 1997. If you don't care that the menu is ugly and looks like it was meant for a 640X480 screen, it is now a total pain in the butt to navigate. Before, the tables you owned were separate from the tables you can try and then buy. This was very helpful because there are so many tables to choose from, and being able to click a link to get to your paid content was a time saver. Now every table is jumbled together, and you have to strain your eyes trying to read crappy font and blurry graphics to get to the stuff you paid for. There is no way to sort out your tables. Even if you buy a season pack of tables, and click on the link for your tables by season, you still go to the same screen with all of the tables.

They have also added a new, ugly overlay during gameplay that you have to make sure you get rid of since it adds nothing, but takes away screen space for gray, fuzzy graphics. Remember when the game just told you what ball you were on? Well, now there are stretched .jpgs of a pinball that are of a much lower quality of the table your playing to look at! The best part is that they're not at the sides of the screen either, but at the bottom, making sure that actual table space is being used for useless, ugly graphics.

Oh, and the Star Trek game still isn't fixed.

Essentially, if you want to buy all of the season packs and get all of the tables, this is one of, if not the most, expensive game on steam. You will spend about $100 bucks to get everything, but you won't because many tables are boring on a computer. If you want to buy tables individually, now you're penalized trying to navigate the laziest, ugliest, and most useless menu I have seen since the 90's, and I'm not exaggerating. The graphics, navigation, and color scheme are OLD, and I have no idea why you would update to something so pathetic, and expect to clear $30 to $100 per customer.

When you add in that the game is almost 13gb in size, no joke, this makes Pinball Arcade the stupidest decision you can make by downloading it. Civilization V is 9gb and Gothic 3 is 4gb, and those two games together are the same size as a pinball game? LLLAAAAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZYYYYYY!!!! You have to download every, single pinball machine because they're too lazy to set up a link where you can download the free trial of a machine that looks interesting to you. You're wasting gb's of hard drive space on tables you aren't interested in because the creators are lazy.

Did I mention the Star Trek game is still broken?

Save your money, save your HD space, save your time, and save your eyes, and forget The Pinball Arcade.

Most of the tables are fine, however most people want to play the Star Trek table, and it's still broken. Everytime I play that table, once I hit over 200 million, there are no more pinballs for me to play with. All you do is hear the music, watch the probes move back and forth, and nothing happens. You can "call an attendant," but since no ball is visably stuck on the screen, you're screwed. It's a shame that if you do well on a very popular table, all of your success is wiped out on a glitch.

This problem has been around for years with this table, and other tables if you check around, and I thought someone at Williams ( or whoever is in charge of software quality control ) would try to fix the problem by now. Unfortunately, paying customers have no value once we've paid. Stay away until someone at this company actually starts caring about paying customers.

Update 6/17/2016

Changed from recommend to not recommend because of their latest major update. They seriously ruined the menu and navigation, and removed the super-convenient grouping of your unlocked tables (so now it is all jumbled together and impossible to find anything). You can sort the tables by rank, but only if you create an additional login to their servers. This change is outright obnoxious.

I, for one, am not spending another dime until they fix this garbage. Below is my original review, back when I was still a happy customer.

I like this much better than Pinball FX. The ball physics feel more accurate (including the fancy tricks like stopping a moving ball with a flipper rather than just bouncing it back). A lot of tables are available, covering a wide range of difficulty levels, and you can try all of them for free.

The game used to be quite nice but the latest update change the whole UI to a much worse version.
It's impossible to navigate the menu with my controller now and even with a mouse it's very cumbersome to use as you can't even use the scroll wheel.
The worst thing is that the feedback about the new UI was there but they just don't care about it.
Can't recommend anymore

Latest update 17/6/16 is AWFUL.
It changes the UI to make look like a cheap knock-off.
The previous UI was not broken so what was the point of this update?

Major problems with the new UI

  • My Tables has been removed
  • View Tables by season has been removed
  • Table selection is now from a matrix of all available tables - which doesn't fit on a single screen
  • You cannot scroll the list with a mouse - you have to click on the scroll buttons - what year is this ?????
  • Achievments not visible from table selection
  • The in-game UI has also changed to a similar cheap and style and covers more screen space than previous menu.

I can no longer recommend this game until the changes are reversed and the old menu restored.

No longer recommended until you change it back.

With the recent changes to the UI I can no longer recommend the game.
It now looks worse, navigates worse, performs worse, is poorly laid out, no longer integrates with dedicated cabs well etc...

A high school designe student could have come up with a better design and layout with little effort. It seems the TPA guys no longer care or just have no pride in their work... Or maybe their blind, moronic janitor just wanted to try his hand at UI design.
