The Banner Saga is gorgeous and thoughtful. Every decision you make carries weight. When you succeed, you feel it, and when you fail, you feel it. At about 9-10 hours for me, this was really, really excellent and I can't wait to jump into the second one -- And the third after that.

If you like turn-based games even a little, and if you love a great, decision-based story with beautiful hand-drawn art and great music, play this game.

The Banner Saga games are some of the best of the last few years. Outstanding art, storytelling, worldbuilding, and music. The "tactics" tile-based strategy is engaging (with a bit of a learning curve). The decisions you make throughout the story challenge you and matter. One of the few games I've bought absent a holiday sale.

Strong recommendation.

I am not unhappy that i bought the game, and am glad to support the team that poured this kind of care into a final product, BUT i cannot recommend that others do so as well.
While the visuals, writing and soundtrack are high tier, the gameplay is just... not. I found myself drudging through the actual game play to get to the next part of the story, and found myself just treating it like working at a terrible job... (Turn your brain off and wait for it to be over...) The strategic elements of the game are not hard to grasp, but the amount of time added to the battles by the way they are designed just makes it unenjoyable for me. And when i am able to just shut down in a game it becomes pointless to me to be playing a game at all when i could watch a movie or tv show while i do chores...
I don't mind punishing gameplay, or difficult gameplay as long as there is some reward for breaking through it. But i'm also not the type of person who considers visuals/story/music "rewarding".
If you are, then this might just be your game, and if you want to support the devs (who i still do believe deserve it regardless of my annoyance) then definitely support them, But if you are a strategy fan who is looking for some gripping gameplay... Just watch a "lets play" or wait for it to be on sale.

An evil threatens the land and you must lead your people to safety, but your choices mean more than you may think. Simple dialogue options will change the outcome of your party and effect options down the line. An intricate battle system leads to victory or to pain. Will you be able to save your people?

  • A very intricate and fun battle system (when you learn how to use it)
  • Beautiful graphics
  • Amazing music and SFX and voiceovers
  • Controls are easy to understand/options laid out well

  • If you don't take time to learn the battle system it's very frustrating
  • Travel becomes tedious
  • Dialogue options are vague/don't know until you try
  • Couple boss battles are a B! Try until you get them right...

Overall, it's an excellent game. I absolutely hated combat until one of the devs came by my stream and gave me some advice, then I absolutely LOVED the combat. I was just playing it wrong! This shone some light on the negatives of travel and how tedious it was. Also how dialogue was very vague. This aside, you will enjoy your time in Banner Saga and want to learn more about the where the enemy came from (there's a sequel!)

I found this a really well put together game. Although the tactical battles were not as complex as XCOM-EU/EW or XCOM2, the turn based tactics are fun. In addition, the other aspects of this game are great. the Artwork is beautiful. I really liked the sound track. The game is well paced, and I found myself immersed in this game. I found the dialog to be a bit flat, but it doesn't take away from the overall experience.

The game is well done, and mostly well written. However, in my short 1 hour of play time, I encountered a major flaw.

While in the second battle, the main character, Ubin, died. When the battle ended, he shows up in the narration. I don't know if the creators ever expected that to happen, but it sure broke the game for me. The main character dies but shows up again as the story continues?

Just for this one reason alone I cannot recommend this game.

This one amazing game that i was sad to see end so soon. The entirity of it is bleak, beautiful and rather amazing. From its music to its art. Everything is amazing. Well mind a few quirks and rather annoying recurences. Such as the little congradulations box after every battle won. Its rather annoyinng to see the same words pop up after every battle, same with the rank ups after every battle.

Yet i cant help but ignore these almost complelty when i play. never felt such a connection as i did with this congregation, travelling along with them, making decicions that will determine their fate and possible kill them. This caused me actual stress at somepoints, when i couldint figure which would be the best choice.

The story though slow helps get one immersed, teaching you about the vast history and lore of the land, creating a more real experience. There is a single decision which after learning the history of the game, made me regret my choice. It practically made what i did a thousand times more meaningful and myself regretful. Though my reasons were for the better good I cant help but to think that i made a mistake.

The gameplay as in the battle sequences are rarer then i would of thought, though rare are challanging and require a good understanding of the characters skills, stats, and planning.

Overall i have to say, i cant wait to play the second one.

9.5/10 will play at least four more times

I love the Viking setting. I enjoy the story, and it certainly kept my attention. The combat has some interesting mechanics: armor break, the fact that strength is health, and some great special moves.

However, the turns and initiative are implemented in a really frustrating way that, in the end, has ruined this game for me.

First, each side gets to move one unit per turn, no matter how many units are remaining, in a fixed rotation. As enemy units are injured and lose health, they also lose the ability to deal damage. However, once they are killed, their spot in the initiative order is filled by another healthy unit. If I have 4 units remaining, but the enemy has only 2 units, then those units will each act twice as frequently as my 4 units, and they will have a distinct advantage. Sometimes I may have a couple of units across the map who have just killed their opponents, and while those two waste turns walking back to the other side, the fewer remaining enemy units that are engaged with the other half of my force will be attacking twice as often as those units near them.

Bottom line is that killing an enemy unit is generally a bad idea until the very end of the fight.

I have adjusted to this tactic, as unintuitive and frustrating as it sometimes is. Now that I have advanced sufficiently, I was able to raise the Strength of one of my favorite units to 18. Now, his key ability, the sweeping attack that hits 3 enemies, has been rendered much weaker. Many weak enemy units can be killed by a single 18 STR attack. When he had only 16 STR, he could severely injure 3 of these weak units in one blow, which was fantastic. Now, he kills them outright, and what remains are 3 stronger units that now get to attack twice as frequently.

Killing an enemy unit is a bad idea? Killing 3 of them even worse? My favorite character is too strong, and that's a tactical disadvantage?

To me, this is just a bridge too far.

Is it novel? Yes. Can you work around it? Sure. But it draws out the combat as you avoid weakened enemies and chase down the healthy ones before you start delivering the killing blow. And the longer I play this game, the less I enjoy it.

The Banner Saga is one of the best games of 2014. It it's a turn based game with beautiful art style and music that fits perfectly on a Nordic mythology themed game.

The story is progressed by choices you make which there are plenty and there are hard ones to make which was a great experience. I thing I didn't like was that the game has no voice acting which broke the flow of the game. They could have hired some great voice actors and added an options to turn them off or on if you prefered. The story is great and there's parts of the game when your not playing you will watch your caravan in the distance moving from place to place and for some people it might be boring but it's great immersion to see their journey from the distance while snow falls while there's a mountain in the background.

Some players say the last boss is hard and there's a difficulty spike but while I died about 5 times I only had 2 at max level (5), few level 4 and 3 and poor items. You have to ration the supplies or your people will leave you and you need to rest in order to gain moral. The trick part is you either buy supplies or you pay for items or you use the renown points to level up a character so you must choose wisely!

Score: 8/10

I don't like strategies, but I love Austin's music. And he won't make music for something boring. It was nice experience: the style, the story, the design (style again) - this is beautiful and not tiring. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with final battle, because I wasn't investing in my fellow fighters enough. Gonna start from the beginning.

This is an awesome game with a unique world, beautiful visiuals and music as well as a meaningful story that you get it shape yourself. You do spend like half of the game reading which if you don't like reading then maybe you wouldn't like this game, but since you bothered to read this comment then you can't hate it that much. Honestly I didn't expect much from this game I just got it on a sale, but i would of paid full-price if I had known it would be this good.

Beautiful, amazing game. Definitely for someone who enjoys a deep story where you control the outcome. Not for someone who wants action, because the majority of the game is reading. Combat, character classes, items, and leveling up all work really well, and combining it with a fantastic story creates a game you shouldn't pass up.

A beautiful game aesthetically, interesting world and characters as well. I like the turn based combat, so have to be careful who you move where and think about where enemies might move on their turn. Highly recommend it, loved it!

Definitely worth it if you're looking for a story driven strategy game that mainly consist of decision making and turned based combat. I'm really impressed by how detailed and rich the universe seems to be as well as how hooked I got by the story.

Though it took a chapter or two to get into the story and understand who signified as "you" I was deeply immersed into the story and couldn't stop playing.
Every choice you make feels like it mattered and despite the fact that i'm not into the turn based strategy games learn't quite quickly and found myself enjoying the chess-like battles.

story 10/10

The only one that sucks, the 2D makes hard sometimes to drag a character to some places.
