Now I've never played a Shadowrun game before, however I'm not exactly new to turn based/strategy RPG games, having played games in a similar vein like the Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner series and Fire Emblem. However, I'll be the first to admit I'm far from a veteran in the genre.

One of the key things I think Returns did right, is the tricky task of drawing me into the story immediately. It's pretty simple: your friend is dead, he's left you a "dead man's switch" - a recorded message promising a hefty reward if you can find the killer. OK. I'm in.

As for the ease of playing the game... as someone who's often daunted by complex RPG interfaces with endless choices, decisions, and items to equip, I thought Shadowrun's interface is a breeze. It clearly shows you your weapon slots, inventory slots, and which body parts you can equip on armor or modifications. As for playing the game itself, you can simply click on your HUD to switch between weapons or end turns, but there are hotkeys for the more practiced player, too.

You encounter many characters on your way to solve your friend's murder, and you get to pick and choose your own team of Shadowrunners to go on every mission with you. Each has their own specialty - summoning mechs, specializing in "decking" (hacking), melee combat, guns, magic, and so on, and I had a great time testing out all the different classes.

All of the characters have their own specialties, but the game is forgiving, and you could probably get by just using guns on everyone. I realized one of my runners had a healing ability 3/4 of the way through the game, and had been getting by just fine without knowing that. So if you're worried about difficulty or complexity, don't be.

Another positive for me is the game is heavily text based. There is a lot more discovery and reading than combat. You can also save anywhere except an NPC turn in combat, or in conversation. So I could get up to answer the door or grab some food without bothering to pause, or quit at a moment's notice if my friends asked me to play a multiplayer game.

I know I'm writing a review no one will ever read, for a two year old game, but it gets an easy recommendation from me, especially if you're a busy person who can only enjoy games in bits and pieces before you're on the go again.

Graphics 7 The game has top down isometric type view, graphics are very well done: the lighting, effects and areas feel very fitting and atmospheric. At points, however, it feels like it would be nice to have a little bit more variety to the areas, some of them feel quite samey. Character creation and portraits are ok but you can't go into the level of detail of some other RGPs.
Audio 7 Music and sound effects are good, there is however quite a bit of reading to do in this game, do not expect voice acting for all of the story / dialogue.
Gameplay 8 I really enjoyed playing this game, its a nice mixture of adventure / mystery and rpg with turn based strategic combat (think xcom). You control a small team of characters (you collect them as the story progresses) who follow you as you play through the story completing various missions and solving mysteries. There are some good puzzles to solve as the story develops and you can choose to upgrade various skills as your character advances in levels. A really nice feature is the "hacking" that the decker class can perform, this takes a form similar to combat in the game but its you and your constructs against the computer systems defences.
Story 8 Shadowrun Returns is set in cyberpunk-esque world where magic meets machine. You can play different stories in the form of campaigns, the official ones are complemented by community created ones via the steam workshop. The campaigns are extremely well done and have a very noir feel to them. There's a lot of background and detail to the world (and a lot of reading to be done) and the story had enough intrigue and action to keep me interested right to the end. The nature of the game (your characters acting out the story) basically means that play feels quite linear and that sometimes the decisions you make don't really have lasting effects but this didn't effect my enjoyment too much.
Replayability 5 As much of the main campaign is story based, once you have completed the game there isn't that much to draw you back in. Having said that there is an excellent DLC (dragonfall) and there are community created campaigns and an editor which should add quite a few hours of playability
8 Excellent game for anyone who loves this style of gameplay or the setting. The community content really adds a whole new aspect and lease of life to the game, just be prepared to do a lots of reading.

High fantasy, cuberpunk and a film noir style that makes this a great game.
It is a turn based role-playing game from a popular tabletop game "shadowrun".

The game come with one campaign "Dead Man's Switch" that got 10 to 12 hours gameplay.
But when youre are done playing that one you simple can make or download a other story on the steamworkshop.
The only problem i have seen there is that you need "Shadowrun: Dragonfall" for some of the downloaded story's.
But thats a simple matter of looking for other story's.

Combat is rough, sometimes a near dead experions.
You need to find cover and try to use youre team togehter to kill the enemy.
Sometimes you even need to plan your staps or use a decker "hacker" to kill the secerty or turrets.
After a battle you feel like you have done someting but if combat ends youre life dont come back so you need to still watch out so you dont die.

There is so mutch to tell about this game but all i have to said.
Dont wait mutch longer and give it a try.

I was pretty skeptical of this game, i watched a few videos about it and read a couple of articles about the game, the universe looked pretty interesting, but the gameplay didn't look appealing to me.

However, since during the cristmas sale, the game got really cheap , i decided to give it a try, and oh boy. Though i still have mixed feelings about the gameplay, the writing in this game is amazing, i never thought i'd enjoy reading this much in a game before. There is a lot of text, which is actually a good thing. A lot of interesting characters and stories.
Would i recommend the game? Sure, but be warned there is a lot of text, that's pretty much most of the game, and if you don't enjoy reading you are not going to have a good time with this game, though the combat can be pretty fun and chalenging, the writing is pretty much what makes this game great.

If I have one complain is how linear it is. Though the level design is pretty good, I'm somewhat disappointed by the lack of exploration. There is a little bit, but the levels are way too linear and it hurts the gameplay. But not by much, since again, the meat of the game is the writing. Also this game looks pretty good. I love the art style of the characters, especially the portraits for the different characters you'll meet, very creative and interesting looking people.

XCom meets Baldurs Gate squished into one.
Lots of reading, but thats how these games are, but there is a lot of reading.
About 1/2 way through I started to notice some of the text grammer and spelling started to show some foreign traits, but nothing that detracted from the game.

The campaign was a touch short. I'm a casual gamer and I finished my first run in about 18 hours, but I enjoyed it! Yes I will probably be playing through again. By the time I was getting to the end I was finially remembering how the talent points worked (yes I played the pen and paper ver some way back when), and what skills/abilities I wanted.

All in all I would recomend the game. Especially if you like XCOM or any of the D&D RPG style games.

Shadowrun Returns is a turn based tactical role-playing game developed and self-published by Harebrained Schemes, a team that, as far is I understand, includes people who already worked on the tabletop role-playing game Shadowrun back in 1989. The basic premise of Shadowrun is a mixture between fantasy (magic, monsters, and meta-races) and science fiction (cyberpunk, advanced technology and our planet in the near future). Thus, it is entirely possible to meet a dwarf drone rigger standing next to an orc shaman armed with an assault rifle.
The video game SR includes a really good adaptation of Shadowrun's combat system and feels gameplay-wise similar to the classic Fallout games. The only downside is that the developers "forgot" to implement the RPG skills. The game feels combat-oriented and the social or skill-dependent choices are very limited (at least relating to the character generation and advancement possibilities). But they tried to make up for it in the campaign that is text-based and tries to implement meaningful choices and decisions.
The atmosphere and the plot of the campaign "Dead Man's Switch" gives a good impression of the classic Shadowrun world and certainly succeeds in introducing people, who aren't familiar with the Shadowrun tabletop RPG, to Seattle in the year 2077.
SR also offers a tool to create your own stories and adventures. Thus, a lot of user-developed content is available.

A very loyal take on the the ol' dice-n-paper RPG I begrudgingly played during high school and college. I had a strong dislike for FASA's SR family-friendly cyberpunk lite (at the time I was reading a lot of Gibson and Sterling), and I always found its allusions street culture hokey and painfully suburban; also a pretty good description of my college RPG group.

That was a long time ago, however. Now I can just enjoy this for it's silliness, which SR RETURNS has in abundance! This game moves along well, has a very low learning curve, and is fun right away. If you grew up on SR like me, you will be delighted to see plenty of NPCs from the earliest editions of the dice and paper game.

A fun diversion for about 20 hours or so; I am looking forward to acquiring new stories / campaigns to play.

Although the gameplay mechanics got a bit boring for me after a while the story on the other hand was so good it kept me going until the very end. If you like TBS with a bit of rpg elements check this game out.

Shadowrun Returns is a fun and exciting game full with gunfights, magic, swords, and story. It gripped me the whole time i played litrally making me addicted to it and llike so many statagey turnbased games it had me at the first fight scene. I would recommend this game to anyone who likes turnbased stratagey.

I play this game because I want cyberware. I want eyes the can zoom in and see in the dark. I want wired reflexes so I can rub pool cue chalk on to people's noses. Isn't this stuff supposed to be real by now? Come on corporate people! My phone is small enough, give me cyber eyes!

Story: You play as a Shadowrunner in the year 2054 in Seattle Washington. You have the choices and the consequences that follow with them. The story in this, is perfect for a RPG and you will be with it from beginning to end. 10/10

Graphics: For an almost top down tactical turn based game, this game looks really nice. With the adding of 2D artwork and drawings, and 3D character models it all bends very well together. 8/10

Gameplay: I honestly thought I was gonna hate the game-play but it's surprisingly awesome! It goes through a tactical turn-based scenario combat-wise. You can choose your class/role, your weapons, gear and who gets to run with you during your runs. It is all very awesome. 8.5/10

Overall: This took me as a surprise as I though I would hate it, but It's one of the best Cyberpunk/Fantasy games I've ever played. You should buy this and the two other games (Hong Kong and Dragonfall) 9/10

This is a great turn-based, story line driven, single player, RPG. Hours of play time and great fun to be had regardless if you have played the pen and paper game or not. This game has a really in-depth and very captivating plot, but there are no voice overs. So as long as you don't mind some reading, I definitely recommend adding this to your library.

Shadowrun Returns — cyberpunk paradise
History: In the dawn of silence the videophone call is distributed. The subscriber on other end of a wire — our old friend. Bad news that it is dead, and addresses to us it "a digital ghost" — video which is written down in advance, having the will of the dead. Expecting fast death, that asks us to understand circumstances of his death and to call guilty to account. At first sight everything is obvious: old times Sam Watts fell the next victim of the maniac — the thief of bodies whom local newsdealers call the Eviscerator. Here only too much in this case seems suspicious...

In general I won't throw on you spoller, you have to see everything in such games it is important. Adventure very interesting! Incredibly deep communication and the city is felt extremely correctly.

Simply I finished this game. (I love a genre), and I decided to give it chance. It now one of my favourite games. There are of course defects in game, and it is Text very-heavy but if you like to read about and immersions in style of the Universe of the cyberpunk this game does a lot of work on it. I also took DLC for it. I am very glad the whole.

Excellent cyberpunk, very vital dialogues. If you feed interesting in such games, don't miss it. 9\10

Being new to the Shadowrun setting, I was concerned that my lack of background knowledge would take away from the experience. I was definitely wrong, the story presented here is quite engaging and doesn't rely on elements of the setting too esoteric to decipher.

The game itself is an isometric turn-based strategy RPG with several diverse and interesting classes, loads of different items, spells, abilities and gear to utilize, and a decent variety of enemies to battle. To be clear, if you are looking for a fast-paced, action-packed thrill ride, you may find XCOM: Enemy Unknown or something similar a little more to your liking. This game is very, very story rich and you will find yourself reading a lot of text. The text is definitely worth reading though, the story in the game is fantastic. The characters are charming, in a gutter rat, "I like you, but I dont really trust you" kind of way. The missions are interesting, diverse and have excellent pacing and escalation.

The combat is a classic turn-based strategy style that pits your group of 1-4 Shadowrunners against various enemies. There are various classes to choose from, all of which offer a satisfying number of abilities, spells and equipment. There are also strategically placed "jack-in" locations that provide access to "the matrix" that can be utlilized by a "Decker" in your group. Sometimes entering the matrix is plot driven with necessary tasks to be completed to drive the story forward. Other times entering the matrix is entirely optional, only offering chances to hack your way to a few extra bucks by collecting private information to sell, or to turn those pesky enemy turrets against their operators. Deckers use an entirely different set of spells and abilities while jacked-in, and having played a decker as my main character, these instances made for a unique and enjoyable departure from the sometimes monotonous combat.

All in all, I definitely recommend Shadowrun Returns to any and all RPG fans looking for a story-rich RPG experience.
