Like most commenters have already mentioned, this game is incredibly short. I didn't make things better for myself either as I rushed through the game to get to the end. If you're patient and willing to pace yourself through the game, or if you just like games that are generally slow-paced, you're probably going to enjoy it a lot more. I did like the story and how it unfolded as you explored the house - and you do have tons to explore given how you can interact with what feels like almost every object you find - but things that pertain to the story progression are much fewer and far between, so you do feel pretty daft picking up your 11th soda can. The atmosphere in the game was lovely and there's much to be said for the extent of the realism of the storytelling, and you do get a full arc with a good (imo) ending, but I just wish it was longer. I still do recommend this game given how unique it felt, though probably only if it were on sale.

It was a good game and a interesting story but like many other reviews state $20 is way too much for this game. I felt like I really took my time to play it and I I didn't even get 2 hours in for the free trading cards. I think I got this in a humble bundle years ago. I would be upset if I dropped $20 for this though.

Game was about 5-6 hours long. Maybe not worth paying full price, buf if you can pick this game up on sale, it really does tell an interesting story. A few red herrings along the way, but that's to be expected.

This falls into the walking simulator category. You just walk around and click on things and the story is presented to you. There are very few times when you can get hung up, but if you explore everywhere and can't find a key or combination, just google it and you'll be on your way in a few minutes.

I would not really consider this to be a puzzle or adventure game even. The whole game takes place in a house and all you do is explore the house to uncover what happened.

The story does have a few holes in it that become more obvious after the reveal, but nothing that would discourage my recommendation.

Although I enjoyed the story and the premise, the game was honestly just too short. I finished this game in 1.5 hours. I agree with a lot of the other reviews, if you can get this game under 5 dollars, then it would be worth your money, otherwise it is way too expensive for the content you get.

Summary/ Overview

Gone Home is a walking simulator, drama, mystery game that takes place in the 1990's centered around a family with daughters. Sam is Kaitlin Greenbriar's older sister . You play as Kaitlin, a high school girl that has flown to a vacant house that has yet to be moved into. You go through the house trying to uncover clues through carefully placed notes of paper, journals, composition books and cassette tapes that you can put in the functioning stereo in Sam’s bedroom. A senior in high school, Yolanda Desoto is a girl that gets into trouble often at school hinted by a disciplinary referral from the high school she goes to, GoodFellow high school. She was written up for having an inappropriate image on the front of her shirt she was wearing at the time. Sam has problems making friends but loves video games and finds this as her constant connection to people at the high school she goes to while Terry, supposedly the father of the house, writes for a living in his study having problems with editing. This aftermath leads to him having problems finding people to publish his novels because of specific intricacies involved within the revision and editing process that are constantly out of place.

Atmospheric Soundtrack

The atmospheric soundtrack is one of the main highlights of the positive aspects this game does right. The composer they used in the score makes you feel very uneasy, lonely, dreadful and mysterious while discovering new things revolving around Sam and Kaitlin's life and that of their friends. When you start the game you hear a rain shower outside, but as you progress in the game, the soundtrack starts to get more mellow attributing to your sense of this grimy and abandoned environment. However, the soundtrack moves much slower than I would like in Gone Home since the story takes a long while to build up rather than being direct and straight to the point.

Hidden-Object/ Puzzle Style Environment

While I have never been a fan of hidden-object style mystery games, the story helps to alleviate putting you through the stress and torture of having to experience a boring mundane experience. What I really admire about Gone Home is the cassette tapes that constantly guide the pacing of the game and make things very interesting. Sam, your sister leaves you very good journal diaries that you pick up along the way. You get to experience their friendship first hand, the activities they do and even whom they seem to hang out with most of the time. The feelings they experience together and the thoughts and opinions in which they have of other people in their high school is well presented and flows conspicuously from one page to the next without being choppy with a showmanship of brevity. In fact, if these two elements of the journal diaries from time to time and the character dynamic between the two girls were left out, the game would be completely boring and uninteresting.

Simple- Simple to Simple-Complex Storyline, Journaling

Finally, the last element worth mentioning towards the game's mechanics and features is the utilization of English syntax that I noticed. Some notes have very deep character dynamics and chemistry while others lack ingenuity and cohesiveness. While it is not a bad thing to mix up the type of sentences and style, it puts me out of the loop and turns me off. I like playing games that have the same sentence structure per separate linear storyline throughout. This is one of my main complaints. The family’s storyline is torpid as well as their character dynamics but the dynamic of friends in high school excites me when it comes to carefully intertwining storylines together that contrast one another.

Overall Story 6/10. While the story is not perfect by any means and the voice acting is decent, the story just does not seem to flux well when you are picking up different objects. For example, if you decide to go into one room and another player decides within the same timeframe in the game to choose instead a different door to open, then the story will unravel fully dependent upon what notes you decide to decipher and read first. Once you open doors and proceed to new rooms the story will automatically continue in order, but there of course is a separate story to be seen based on notes, journal diaries and corrugated pieces of paper.

The Good & Bad: Positive and Negative Aspects of Gone Home

The Good
• Nice soundtrack with ambience adding emotion
• Excellent graphics
• Good character dynamics
• Awesome setting
• Sam and Kaitlin being foils of one another

The Bad
• Short length
• $20.00 price tag
• Poor puzzle solving
• It gives no well-defined hints or clues
• The story is slow-paced
• Discomfort through the use of camera controls using the gamepad where you have to constantly look up and down

Overall 5/10
The game is ok but not great. It lacks emotion in the story telling and the mechanics are boring, aggravating. Do not buy this game at full price. I would say the game is worth it if you can find it for $5.00 or less since it does have a commentary mode behind how everything was placed and created. However, normal price in the walking simulator genre for this one specifically is far too much and considered to be highway robbery.

For real, do not buy this game when it goes off sale. I only bought it because it cost £3.00, originally it's price is £14.99, which in my opinion is totally not worth it for this short game.

Honestly, the game is very well done and there's quite a bit exploring to do and a lot of effort has been put into it but like I say it is not worth the original price, at first you have no idea what to expect... although I feel like the horror themed atmosphere kind of gives off the wrong vibe, I was expecting some scary ♥♥♥♥ to happen but... it didn't, just because of the vibe of it, I did read that the game is not horror but it still seemed like it was supposed to be scary.

Anyway, it is cool that other small details were cool like the mother/father side story as well as the uncle but I was a little disappointed because I expecting more from one of those stories in particular. I guess it was there to prolong the game a little. But I feel like it was just a huge build up for nothing.

It's a "cute" story, I guess, but I felt disappointed. I literally said "is that it?" at the end. It is short and I didn't expect it to be any longer but I was definitely disappointed with the outcome of the story.
I streamed the game play and a viewer even said "I don't get it, what even happened?".

Gone Home is an interactive short story of about an hour and a half. During that time, you are Katie who has just returned home from Europe and finds nobody home. So she explores the family mansion, to find out where her parents and her sister are. The graphics are nice enough, sound effects are ok and the voice acting is not bad either, which is a rare feat for indie games. But the story is what an interactive story is mostly about, of course, and unfortunately that's where Gone Home will be severely lacking for most people.

I don't want to spoil the story for people who may want to experience the story for themselves, but I can say that the story is a huge disappointment if you get your expectations from elements like 'a huge mansion to explore', 'an empty house', 'mystery: where is everyone?' etc. It's nothing like what you'd think. There are no unexpected twists in the story and there is nothing supernatural going on or anything like that.

The description for the game on the Steam page contains some quotes from reviews. One of the quotes mentions that the story of Gone Home is a love story. So that's no spoiler either, it's in the product's description. The story is indeed a teenage love story like you might have seen in an After School Special from the late 20th century. I don't mean that in bad way, there is nothing wrong with After School Specials, it's just so you know what to expect and who the target audience is.

If you think you might enjoy a teenage love story being told while you explore every room of a mansion, you should still be careful before deciding to purchase Gone Home. It's a completely linear experience and the interactivity required is very limited, so there is no reply value whatsoever. Moreover, the whole experience only takes an hour and a half.

So we should really talk about the price here. That isn't easy, though, because money is subjective: to some people, €20 or $20 means practically nothing but for other people, that's half their monthly budget for gaming. I usually tend to recommend buying games if they're on sale when I personally think they may be a bit overpriced for the value they actually offer. But in this case, I think it's safe to be blunt and say that pricing a short novel (emphasis on 'short') with extremely little content at €20/$20, is nothing less than a complete rip-off. I think I personally paid around €3.5 for it and I still feel that I paid a bit too much for what I got.

For people who are sure they won't want to experience Gone Home for themselves, I'll tell you the whole story just so you'll see what I'm on about in this review. So needless to stay, HUGE SPOILER coming up... Well, where is everyone? The parents are away on a weekend trip and the sister has run away from home with her lesbian lover.. Even for an After School Special pitch, the producers would have said: "Hmm ok, it's an interesting start for a story but what else is going on?". To which Gone Home would reply: "Nothing else. That's it. And that will be 20 dollar/euro please."

This game is beautiful.
At first I thought it was just a regular point n' click - but it turned out to be much more than that.

I think that most of the negative reviews weren't written because the plot or the game itself is bad, but because they didn't like the fact that there's a girl that loves another girl in the game (just look at the comments and you'll know what I mean).

The part on which Sam talks about when her parents found out about her and Lonnie was touching - it was nice that they showed what it's like to hear things such as "it's a phase" or "it's because you haven't found the right girl yet" -, but they could've depth the whole S+L drama a lot more.

It's nice that it's not another "hetero-perfect-love-story" (and that it all happens in Portland, because I love that city). Also the references were GREAT, especially the X-FIles ones (which includes the magazine in Sam's locker featuring Gillian Anderson!!!!!!!).

It's a short game so don't hurry. I don't know how the ♥♥♥♥ some people managed to finish this game in under two hours. I took almost FOUR to finish it and still regret I didn't explore it more.

Oh, and its regular price is way too expensive. Just wait for a major sale like I did (when I bought it it was 80% off).

The native language of this game is: Empathy.
If you do not speak it, and can not understand it, all that is good, human and nuanced to this game will be hard to make out.

It is worth learning to speak that language... and not just for this game...
If you don't speak it yet, perhaps because you haven't had time enough to really look into it, start putting in the effort and come back here when you have a grasp on it.
Just like Jokes and Poems, some things tend lose their impact if some one tries to translate them for a non-native speaker.

Atmosphere is good, prepares you for something stupendous (complete with Satanic references, what look like blood stains, etc.), and comes up with a lame love story. Like seriously? It's sappy, vapid, and as emotionally deep as a pen cap.

What's especially ironic is the main character's father in the game is taking a reaming from his own father as well as from his employer for being a terrible author; it's almost like the author of this game's love story is mirroring his own failures as an author through the game's father's subplot, which you (the player) glean from conspicuously dropped letters all over the house that end up being 100% irrelevant to the boring love story.

The climax of the love story you can see coming from a mile away. There's nothing to surprise you at all in this game.

I wouldn't even recommend this to lesbians who experienced young love; chances are your own stories are so much deeper and more multifaceted than this laughable excuse for a drama.

Gone home is a drama storytelling walking simulator game.

Most of these types of games are usually a hit or miss,for me this one was a miss.

The plot usually leads you with much expectation ,giving the good soundtrack and the design of the enviroments,but ends with a "meh" kind of situation.

Giving that,the side stories end being more interesting than the main story itself,if you explore a lot.

Sadly after its over,there is nothing more to look for.

These kind of walking simulators games (with rare exceptions) are made more to be appreciated than be played.

As far as I am really open to Walking Simulator genre, I see Gone Home as complete torture to bear with.
Walking around an empty house, trying to unravel completely mundane plot, feeling forced pretentiousness laying unpleasantly and heavy like an outdated burrito making the same fishy smell.

Maybe it has some quality for people who are personally touched by the subject. But personally I find this experience completely boring and borderline unplayable.
