Dream 1.2 | Keybinds, Performance increase & Bugs

Sorry for the wait. Version 1.2 brings the new keybind fixes. Those who have already rebound keys will have to do so again. Thanks for all the help and support as always.

Here are the full notes:
  • Keybindings now work correctly and support secondary bindings.
  • Item number #3 (Alarm Clock) now shows correctly in the Hub World.
  • Fixed the collision turning off on level load for the Desert Information Boards.
  • Vast Desert performance improvements.
  • Bubble in Act III no longer floats above the Ocean and appears where it should.
  • Fixed light switch flipping 180 degrees in nightmare 1.

About This Game

Dream is an exploration game that takes place within the subconscious mind of Howard Phillips, a young man whose waking hours are tedious and dull, but whose dreams are lucid and powerful. Adventure through these abstract worlds, solve their challenges and discover their secrets in search of the key to Howard’s future.

The different worlds that make up Howard’s dreams can be strange, beautiful or even chilling. They’re filled with puzzles, collectibles and surprises. Snow-covered deserts, endless twisted stairways, haunting nightmares and much more await you.

With non-linear narrative and gameplay you can explore at will and see the story progress according to your choices. Multiple possible endings mean the decisions you make and the dreams you experience will influence how Howard’s future plays out.

The worlds of Howard’s dreams are accompanied by an enchanting original soundtrack from composer Norman Legies. The Dream OST is available to purchase along with the game.

Dream was created by HyperSloth, a team of three students from the University of Huddersfield whose mission is to create unique games suitable for a wide audience and to a high standard. Dream is their first major release.

"When Portal meets Inception."
I think this little sentence summerizes the game at all.

The Story:

As Howard Phillips, you jump into the role of a young man, whose parents want to force him into a lifestyle. He himself wants to become an author, but he keeps staying in the shadow of his uncle. Because of he's not very successfull in his life, he often falls back into his dreams. The mainstory is about his familys past and the last speech he had with his uncle. In the begining you get a short preview of the whole speech. Now it's your turn; discover the dreams of Howard and solve the riddles you get in there, to relive the speech on your own.
Since the story is somehow monotone at some points, I can only give 6/10.

The Gameplay:

Since the story is based on solving riddles, the gameplay is kept pretty simple:
Classic WASD-Controlled walking
Some ducking and jumping
Interaction with objects via left-click or a bound key
But, like in Portal, it is not a negative aspect, because this game is based on solving riddles.
While discovering your dreams, you feel a bit like in the movie "Inception", because in this movie the also use the so called "luzid dreaming", while moving around in the dreams of others.
In addition it is a lot of fun, seeing the dream worlds change, the more you solve the riddles.
All in all I give an 8/10 for the gameplay.

The Graphics:

I don't want to do a graphic analysis, because this game doesn't want to impress with awesome 4K-textures or bombastic real-/quicktime-events. But the graphics part is always a part of a complete review.
The graphics are very balanced at all. The worlds are 67% made of repeating textures, but these are very detailed. The textures, that are important for the riddles, are very lovely designed. A picture frame, that makes an impression of a glass-made front and a wooden backside, or a clipboard, where even the clip is well textured, are aspects that make a game deserve commendation.
All in all, I have to lower one's sight, because of the repeating textures in bigger areas.
Therefore, it is still a solid 7/10.

Pro & Contra:

Well done merging of Portal and Inception
One one hand you have relaxing riddles and on the other hand you have very hard ones
Lovely designed (dream-)worlds
Very clear atmospheric difference between the different worlds

Gamesound is too low even on maximum, as long as the background music is turned on
Some small collision-bugs
Minimal graphic-bugs in some situations

My Result:

Based on the numbers, I get a 7/10 for this game. But since it has a lot of little aspects, that are very positive, I incline a bit more to 8 so I want to give 7,5/10.

Dream does a great job at capturing the sometimes outright absurdity of dreams. The game appealed to me because I share that interest with the main character. The dreamscapes you explore are all very distinct and filled with moderately challenging puzzles. The nightmares are scary because of their atmosphere, which is enhanced by the music. I did find some creepy things outside of the nightmares as well, which ultimately makes sense because dreams do not adhere to the rules of the waking world. Still, it was very worth to keep playing, because in the end this game is just beautiful.

One minor remark: There's some bugs left at the time of writing which interfere with completing all achievements. Hopefully they will get patched out soon. Nothing gamebreaking however. Just a note for the full completionists out there. They can be gotten with savegame tinkering but of course that should not be needed.

Dream is a beautiful and twisted journey through the subconscious. You play Howard, a man with a over active imagination and recurring dreams. You guide Howard as he goes through these dreams and solves puzzles and begins to unravel the mystery of his own mind. What makes Dream so unique is that the narrative and path you take is up to you. There are many paths to choose from and each them weirder then the last. There are many details in the game that make it's story and universe rich. Along the same lines of Gone Home, you can pick up items and learn more about Howard and the houses former tenant. However, this is far from just some simple walking simulator. (even though I don't think that's a bad name/genre) There are several puzzles that keep you involved in the games story and makes you feel like an active participant, even if you don't know necessarily what is going on. Dream is gorgeous in design, music, and sound, it's game that must be experienced to truly understand. The tone of game can shift in seconds, as every dream, can be become a nightmare. This tonal shift keeps you on edge and makes the game feel suspenseful. I feel like I barely scratched the surface of Dream and there is so much more to see and do in this journey.

Bought this when it was still on Early Access, but launched after the game was finally released and patched from bugs. The best thing in this game - MUSIC. Sad to say, Dream was a big dissapointment for me. Explorating the dreams and finding hidden paper notes with real meanings of them was quite exciting, but after a while I found myself annoyed and tired of walking and solving weird puzzles...not because puzzles here are too hard for me, they just lack of something that would made me stay with this game for longer. Maybe I will comeback to this later and change my opinion, for now it's just a annoying exploration game. And I really like exploration/adventure games.

is probably my favorite game on steam, and here's why

Dream is what most people call a puzzle based " Walking Simulator " , similiar to titles like Mind: Path to Thalamus, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter & etc.

But first let me tell you my story with this game, you can jump this and go straight to the ratings below if you want.

At the second i saw the trailer i bought the game on its very first versions of early access, because hironically i felt really connected to the history and the main character, but wathever that's another story.

It was still a small game trying to make itself work. .The game processing was rough and slow, really slow . Along the way some people close to the devs passed out and the game entered a long hiatus of no updates & etc, that may have caused some people to hate on the game and probably send some negative reviews so ignore most of those please.

Anyways gladly, the devs came back after a while and they focused 100% on the game, i've never seen a team so focused on update a single game like the devs of Dream, and oh god, it payed off every second.

From someone who watched this game grow from just an interesting concept/game to a masterpiece, i highly suggest you buying it. And for the devs,
thank you so much for making this game.

tl;dr/mandatory ratings

  • Graphics : 9,
    gosh this game almost beat Mind : Path to Thalamus, i was starstruck from the beggining to the end, its a very charming game and it feels smooth af. Some people had some problems with framerate but they fixed it already.

  • Gameplay : 10
    Well, its solid and the puzzles are simple, not repetitive and most of the times but it can be hell.
    (Yes graveyard puzzle, i'm lookin @ u rn). Well its a puzzle game so i guess i couldnt expect less. Also i was happy to notice that the devs added a sprint key, it makes the game so less frustrating when you have to walk gigantic mazes. (graveyard i'm still looking at u)

  • Audio : 9
    I wanted to talk about this in particular because i dont know how 3 people in a small indie studio could make such a pleasant soundtrack/voice acting? Howard is quiet most of the time but the dialogue of the game itself is so well made, and there wasnt a single soundtrack i didnt fell in love with. Right out of the start the jukebox music touched my heart so bad. The only problem is that there's a puzzle that you cant really hear much of what Howard is saying and you have to really focus, if it wasnt because of that, the audio would get a 10/10 rate

    The game is just another really good/hidden gem game, but to be able to see this game grow and to see the devs try everyday to make it work and improve it made this one of my favorite games on steam. And devs, again, Thank you so much for making this game.
