Update to 1.3.2053

We're pleased to release the latest version of Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, including over two-hundred fixes and dozens of new gameplay enhancements. The full change log is posted on our official forums, but here's a taste of what we've done:

* Added "Font Size" to Graphics Options (changing this during play will empty the combat log)
* While viewing a mage's Spellbook screen, players can now switch to a priest character and the game will immediately switch to the Priest Spells screen (and vice versa)
* Spell scrolls that can be written into a spellbook for the current character now display a green-tinted overlay
* Non-friendly NPCs that are Blinded will no longer stand still; they will wander aimlessly until they are close enough to see someone worth attacking

One of my all-time favourite games. Still holds up perfectly today. I enjoy how it's more open and loosely structured than the sequel, which gives the game a real sense of adventure as you don't know what you will stumble across next. Enhanced Edition content is ~okay~, tonally it's different to the OG content so it sticks out a bit, but it's worth a playthrough. The addition of Neera means there is now an excellent good-aligned mage to recruit. QOL improvements make this the definitive version.

One of the greatest games of all time. The Enhanced Edition is still the same great game but with a few new companions and quality of life improvements, such as loot/item, chest/container, and character name highlighting when pressing tab, as well as a zoom function. The new companions are pretty nice. I played a lot with Dorn Il-Khan, the Half-Orc Blackguard, which is an evil and twisted reflection of the lawful good paladin, and I really like him a lot. He is an interesting character with a cool personality, and has an awesome class kit. The improvements and companions are not essential by any means, but they are nice. A lot of people complained about bugs when the EE was first released, but I'm happy to say that with the 1.3 patch, this has been eliminated. I played through the whole game and did not encounter any noticable bugs. If you have never played Baldur's Gate, this is definitely the definitive version of the game, and the one to get. It's a 150+ hour game, so even at the full price of $20 you get your moneys worth for sure. If you have played Baldur's Gate, buy it on sale and enjoy a great excuse to replay a fantastic game.

ever since Black Isle created this series and Icewind Dale I have been a fan. I suck at these games but I keep playing and playing because the graphics, soundtrack and story are fantastic. Throw Steam your cash and buy this beast of classic play.

An old classic in a new coat. The entire Baldur's Gate series is definitely one of the best RPGs ever made so you can't go wrong with this one. Game itself contains an epic story, challenging battles and exploration of the Sword Coast. Enhanced Edition brings some bonus content and graphical improvements as well. However during my gameplay I have encountered some minor bugs in quest log but this is really not a big deal if you are intereted in deep RPG experience.

PROS
  • Graphical Improvement
  • New Characters
  • Oldschool RPG
CONS
  • Minor Bugs
MY RATING: 82 %

It's awesome. Baldur's Gate really shows off how good of a ruleset D&D is. There are any number of ways to play the campaign, solo, or with a party of up to six of probably fifty distinctly different character builds. I played for over 85 hours in just a single play through of Baldur's Gate and the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion content, which is included here.

Enhanced with new bugs and broken features! It's disappointing to see a classic game manhandled by a team who clearly don't know what they're doing. It's better to just play the original with only the mods you want. This version has come a long way, but it's taken far too long and still has many outstanding issues, and is missing key features that I would have expected from an "enhanced edition" such as steam cloud support and achievements.

Personal rating: 10/10
Replayability: High
Budget: If you already own the original, buy on sale only.
Lenght: ... It took me years to finally complete it. I'd wager an experienced player can get it done in a week or more. No less.

Baldur's Gate is hands-down one of the best games I've ever played. While initially, porting D&D into a tactical real-time gameplay setting should set off some alarm-bells, this game is one of the most tactical games I've ever played, requiring precison, patience and understanding.

It's also a roleplaying game that allows you to explore the, now venerable Forgotten Realms setting that I grew up with (Fantasy books ect.). It features a soundtrack and memorable characters that you will NEVER forget. You'll find yourself hearing things in real life, that almost makes you burst out a quote from this old gem, that no one will get.

The biggest problem with Baldur's Gate, is that it's ancient by now... Which is where the enhanced edition comes in!
Upgrading the game to HD and even upgrading the game engine and interface to the same standard as the sequel is exactly the kind of boost the game needed to become playable, even to people who didn't grow up with it.

Enhanced edition also features some new content. While I appreciated this, I'll be honest and say that I didn't quite feel that this new content entirely fit with the mood of the original game. It was a bit too... Humorous and... Cute. I mean, considering the rather dark underlining theme of the game and the story, it just didn't feel quite right, but this is to be expected as the update was done by a third party.

Baldur's Gate, to me, is the predecessor to all modern RPG's.

Look, if you want to play Baldurs Gate 1 or 2 you really should just find a download for it somewhere and mod it so it works. Enhanced Edition has clear technical issues and shoehorns things into the game that don't really need to be there. You should definitely play Baldurs Gate 1 and 2, but don't do it this way.

Be wary when purchasing. While the game does look better than it's origins Beamdog doesn't really do a whole lot in the way of patching. Took them way too long the make a sizable patch to the game. In fact the only patch I can think of Pre-BG2EE, was right before the second game's release.

It is really hard to not recommend this, as I would count Baldur's Gate as my favorite game of all time. So while I am not recommending you buy Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition, I am still wholeheartedly recommending you get Baldur's Gate, as it is absolutely incredible. If you have never played Baldur's Gate, go to GoG or somewhere and buy the original game. I have easily sunk 200 hours into the original game, back when it required swapping multiple CDs. Only buy this if it is a last resort and you absolutely cannot play Baldur's Gate any other way, as even here it is incredible. But buy the original elsewhere, and not this.

There is really so little work they needed to do to this to make it great. If it was absolutely unchanged it would still be incredible, but sadly the changes they've made are for the worse. There are still stability issues which I don't get with the GoG version, but the most notable problem is the cinematics.

In the original Baldur's Gate, you would get these beautiful (for the time) cut scenes of the area you were entering. The opening cinematic has been replaced with a far worse attempt to recreate it, and most areas have nothing more than a brief glance at the area. The cinematics created such a great feeling of the area you were aout to enter, in nashkel, beregost and the gnoll stronghold, that removing them seriously dents the game experience.

The game of Baldur's Gate itself is as glorious as ever, but this is simply not the best way to play it. It isn't the revamped experience that was promised. It is apparantly possible, with some modding, to get the game back to normal, cinmatics and all, but it seems very backwards to have to do that just to undo the changes that are the supposed selling points of this 'enhanced' game.

Oh boy. I hate this remake. Not a love/hate thing, it's hate/hate/hate. I've invested 60 hours. First of all, the game looks nothing like the iPad screens shown with all the fancy lighting effects. Secondly, it's SO BUGGY IT'S BARELY PLAYABLE. I have the GOG version, was hoping this was a clean update of the game. Why would a NEW VERSION of Baldur's Gate be a buggy frigging mess when the original is touted as one of the most brilliant PC games of all time? I don't get it. All I can figure it, the company that got their hands on the IP weren't held to high standards by WotC or Bioware (mostly WotC--but I don't know what the license issue is after so many years--I'd guess EA is not in the picture).

Save yourself a lot of frustration. Don't BOTHER with this piece of crap. Get the original if possible and play on a 4:3 screen. Fortunately, I got it on sale for a lot less than $20. And, fwiw, I've heard rumors that BG2:EE is much better than this, not buggy. But I'm not sure if I'll bother with it, or with the Icewind Dale series coming out soon from this studio.

I bought this game hoping to co-op it with my friends, but none of them buy games and I'm always left to end up playing stuff like this on my own making it harder and less fun than it should be.
But besides that, it reminded me of the original Diablo game, except you had to control multiple characters in battle at once, choosing what to attack them with, what skill, what movement, and also look at what the enemy is firing and at your parties health points. WAY too much s*** to do at once. Constantly died, didn't enjoy it in general.

If I had to choose one game as the pinnacle of CRPGs and dungeon crawlers, this would be it. Deep character customization, deeper story. It is very hard to not find something to do in this game. Don't want to do the story just yet? That's cool, there's plenty of other quests to be done. Want to explore for awesome loot and dungeons? There's plenty of that too. The NPCs are excellent as well, as they want to do what they want, even if that means ditching you in moments where you need it most. This sounds tedious, but if a member leaves, chances are they were not suited for your party any ways.

Great graphics (for its time), great animations, humorous, story-rich, plenty to do, lots to explore, and just all around fun. 10/10
