There is a pure simplicity in the gameplay of Doom. 'Visceral' has become a buzz word in pop culture these days, a shorthand for "gritty", "violent", "intense". In describing Doom, I must reclaim the word visceral: it is something under your skin, something that plays not to the intellect, but to the hardened insctincts buried deep in our brains.

Doom is a game that taps into heart of darkness.

It is the thrill of fighting for your life every step of the way, towards a single goal: the total destruction of everything in your way. With the utmost efficiency of narrative, you push deeper and deeper into the abyssal Hellscape.

On a narrative level, Doom supplies the bare minimum necessary to be engaged. It lacks the mythos of Halo, the literary rabbit-hole of Marathon, or the cosmic transcendence of Half-Life. It is tough-guy male power fantasy distilled to its 100-proof essence. Unlike its successor, Quake, which had too little narrative in its single-player, Doom gives you some compelling reason to keep fighting.

Gameplay is fast-paced, the sound design and music still hold up. Even its sprite graphics have aged well, looking better than many 3D games of the 90s.

Doom is a must for any FPS fan. To play it in 2016 is to boil the FPS experience down to its bare essence, and to see Id Software's influence across two decades. Well worth $4.99.

Due to the recent release of the new Doom, I decided I should buy the classic(s) on my steam account too.
On its own, I think the controls are really weird in the steam version as you use the mouse for pretty much everything, but with Zdoom launcher, you can customize them in any way you like, which makes the game really easy to play.
Other than that, I can't say anything bad about the game. It hasn't aged badly at all and it's the classic Doom, the first fps I ever played and one of the best ever made (in my opinion).

BUY IT NOW AND LOVE IT FOREVER

My internet is about as fast as death by Gangrene, so I'll write another game review. Woohoo!
I only played a little of the base game which is still a solid bit of fun (I have about 12 hours in the game). However, in order to get max enjoyment I reccommend installing the Brutal Doom mod. It takes the game to a higher level of ♥♥♥♥ing awesome.
The gameplay is quick, challenging (I played Super Bad Difficulty), and brutal. Every weapon feels like it packs a HEAVY punch; the good ole' shotgun might be one of my favorite weapons in gaming. The enemies explode like someone packed C4 in a 10 gallon bucket of blood. Sometimes you'll blow half their body off, and they'll wail in agony just before you finish em off with a chainsaw (I'm killing sprites from 1995, I'm not a psycho). Because the combat with this mod is so satisfying I never got bored of killing the same enemy types over and over again.
The 80's thrash metal choice of music also fits the game well. There's a surprising number of tracks that were put into the game, something that might easily be overlooked by someone just tearing through this game. I appreciate it when a game has an appropriate soundtrack that enhances your experience. If you don't like the music in the base game then there are several mods that can be installed.
The level design is also excellent, especially in the first two chapters of the game. I like that I had to search around for secret items in order to keep my health, armor, and ammo stockpools high enough to survive. What makes the level design impressive is that these items are usually spaced out in such a way that keeps the challenge high but not impossible. It's a very hard thing to do when you think about it; something that modern day fps designers don't have to worry about. While I like the maze design of the maps I will call it a double edged sword. If you overlook anything in these complex levels during the chaotic combat, say a door switch, you might not be able to advance. You'll have to trek on back through the level to find that button, and it can take a fairly long time (especially when you consider the pace of the game).
Lastly, the Brutal Doom mod allows for a fair amount of gameplay customization. You play how you want to play. I haven't looked into many other mods for the game yet, but there are plenty out there that'll keep me coming back to this classic.
Overall, the game is a hell of a lot of fun. It belongs in any fps fan's library. I may have written a long review for a $5 game (cheap af btw), but hey I wanted to say why this game kicks so much ♥♥♥.

What can I possibly say about the original classic that hasn't already been said countless times before? It possesses a timeless @$$kickery that no matter how many times I return to it over the years it never seems to lose it's flavor. Much like Duke Nukem 3D I've played it on more consoles and handhelds than I can even recall anymore, both in homebrew and official ports. There's enough source ports of the PC version alone these days to make your head spin and more customizable options than you can shake a boomstick at (oh, did I mention controller support, multiplayer, etc. too?)

So grab one of the source ports (or play vanilla with the supplied dosbox if you prefer and can work out the kinks with a modern PC...hit the guides and forums if you have any troubles or need help with ports/mods), I've been using ZDoom personally (which also has some variations depending on your needs), and get your fill of ULTRA VIOLENCE. :D

this game is AMAZING, just get it now, doesnt matter about the sales because its worth lots of fun.

people think every Fps is a doom copy but doom is a lot different then the population of Fps, and thats why you should play it.

also you need a program to run it, its not going to ruin the gameplay - just for new computers.

It's Doom. You kill demons with a variety guns while running around looking for secrets and the exit. Rinse repeat until the game's done. If that doesn't sound appealing don't buy it. But, if you're an actual human being who likes fun, then buy it right this instant. It's still great after all these years.

HOW TO PLAY DOOM ON NEW VERSIONS OF PC JUST ONLY DOWNLOAD ZDOOM GZDOOM : Install your source port of choice into its own folder. Find your DOOM folder in Steam (not sure where it is in Windows 7, but in XP, it would be under Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\common\). Find DOOM.WAD inside the DOOM folder, and copy or move it to the folder your source port is installed in. You should be able to run DOOM just fine with said source port now. CHANGE NAME OF GZDOOM.EXE TO DOSBOX.EXE AND DELETE THAT OLD DOSBOX.EXE LAUNCH YOUR DOOM AND PLAY :)))) like if i help !

Dark Souls fans is a game for only the most hardcore gamers who love getting routinely screwed over and by many is considered the hardest game franchise today. To an extent they're right. Dark Souls is a very difficult game that makes every time you've beaten an enemy feel like a small victory. But they haven't played DOOM on nightmare mode and are surrounded by enemies firing pistols and shotguns at them while demons fling fireballs at them and you're dodging and firing, painfully aware of the fact that you're down to 4 rounds in your shotguns and 15 in your pistol, and your even more painfully aware of the fact that you only have 6% of health left and enemies are constantly teleporting in not giving you the slightest break. Then your shotgun is out of ammo and you're down to your pistol, and then IT'S out of ammo and you just bum rush the nearest enemy with your fists who blows you away with one shotgun blast, forcing you to replay the entire level because you forgot to make a save file and checkpoints aren't even a concept in this game. But the best, most soul crushing, part?

That was level one motherf***er. and you've got over 30 levels of this waiting to bend you over and make you call it daddy.

I have so many memories playing Doom and it's still a fantastic single player fps and one of my favorite games of all time. However, this is the Ultimate Doom version which contains a fourth episode that isn't very well put together. The first three episodes however are an absolute blast and worth playing through.

A lot can be said about Doom. It started a fascination with first-person shooters that still lingers to this day. It spurred a rise in violent video games that eventually necessitated a ratings system. It pushed the limitations of 3D graphics to breathtaking highs in 1993. It revolutionized LAN play and was the catalyst for internet TCP/IP play.

But by now, you probably all know that. Doom is such a big name that it was even made into a (rather mediocre) film in 2005. It's become part of pop culture and the media conciousness. To try and sum it up is pointless.

What you really want to know is whether or not grabbing the Steam version is worth it. In it's default state, I would say no. The copies on Steam are emulated through DOSBox, which kind of sucks. The games run fine and all, but they have low resolution, choppy sound and some obtuse key bindings.

Still, ID Software also pioneered a new file format when they released Doom; the WAD file. Since this version is basically the same one from the 1995 re-release, it has the WAD file that can be extracted to any numerous source ports available. There is even a method of making ZDoom (one of the most popular ports) work with the Steam overlay.

For that reason, if you don't already own Doom, then go ahead and grab it on Steam. $15 is a great price for 2 classic games and some expansion packs. It doesn't hurt that the fundamental design of Doom is timeless. Even if you have played it before, it remains addictive and ingenius all these years later.

If anything, I think I'll be playing this until I die. I may go years without touching a single WAD, but when the itch comes, I always stick around for a long while. Those source ports can also get you online multiplayer (along with a host of other "enhancements"), so you really cannot go wrong.

As for the game itself, I've always loved the simplicity of Doom's design. The level layouts feel like labyrinths and require some lateral thinking. The enemy design is brilliant; it conveys exactly what you need to know in seconds. Even the sound design helps with it's directional audio and individual sound bytes. This is one of the best examples of retro gaming, bar none.

While I may prefer the sequel for it's faster combat, it's hard to deny how well made each episode in Doom is. The first episode, to be specific, is one of the greatest collections of maps you're bound to ever find. Even the pointless fourth episode (that was a bonus to the "Ultimate" Doom) can be a bit of fun.

The game may not be long, but there is definitely a good reason that it has remained a staple for many PC gamers.

10/10
