What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“When we started developing Heroes & Generals it was with the intention of creating a game for the gamers as much as for ourselves. The games we have been creating in the past (back in the IO Interactive days) have all been shrouded in secrecy until they were released and therefore always carried a number of things that players did not like but we were unable to change. Because it is the players that in the end plays the game we think they should have greater influence on the development.

Since the very early days of the project in 2011 (pre-alpha stage), we invited players in to play the game and have involved our community in the making of Heroes & Generals and listened to the feedback from them. So it's a natural extension of the way we develop Heroes & Generals, to also include the Steam Community, by going Early Access.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We're approaching the end of our Open Beta/Early Access phase, but it's still too soon for us to put a date on when we'll launch.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We're still tweaking, fixing bugs and adding new features to Heroes & Generals, and even though we feel that the game is now fun and quite stable, we still wish to get all things 'just right' before we call it 'launched'.

We do not plan to do a full server reset when the game launches.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We're in the end of our Open Beta phase, preparing for launch.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Heroes & Generals is Free2Play. We wish to create a healthy, solid and well-balanced game and community, where you can get a great experience playing the game, no matter how much money you spend! There is already an in-game economy in place, where you earn in-game credits and warfunds for being active in the game, by playing FPS-missions and/or handling Assault Teams.

You can also buy gold, which you can use to buy practically everything, usually it give you the option of buying stuff ‘early’, so you don’t need to grind that much. We also offer a Veteran Membership to accommodate wishes of having an all-inclusive package, where you earn xp, ribbon-xp, in-game credits and warfunds at an increased rate etc.

Prices are regularly being tweaked now in Open Beta/Early Access and we will most likely still tweak prices at and after launch.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We encourage the players to participate in discussions in our forum: http://forum.heroesandgenerals.com/

When you write feedback about the game, remember to try and explain your reasons. Constructive criticism will help us build a better game for you.”

Soviet Infantry Truck incoming with Everhart – Knights of the Road Update

In the upcoming Everhart update (named after the American soldier Forrest Eugene Everhart) we are introducing a new Infantry vehicles. The GAZ AAA Cargo Truck! This vehicle takes you and all your comrades right to the action.

This truck will fit a driver and nine extra soldiers, which are covered by tarp. A Trojan horse on wheels, which will leave your enemies wondering how many forces they have to expect.
However, beware of enemy fire, the truck is not armored like other Infantry vehicles.

The GAZ AAA Cargo unlocks at Chauffeur Ribbon Rank 2, can equip two supply crates and is available for Infantry Soldiers.

Historical Facts
The GAZ-AAA Cargo Truck is the three axle version of the GAZ-AA, which corresponds to the Ford Model AA. The Soviet Union signed an agreement with the Ford Motor Company in 1929 to purchase automobiles and parts from Ford, while Ford agreed to give technical assistance. With the experience the engineers gathered from Ford's help and vehicles they later built their own models, which were only loosely based on Ford's former models.

RBS – Reto Broadcasting Society

Every week dedicated members of our community plan, record, edit and upload or stream videos on everything Heroes & Generals. Some present new features and content, others teach players how to be successful with certain play styles, weapons or vehicles and some are simply good fun.

We are extremely happy and grateful that so many of you make the effort to do this. Unfortunately, many channels are not yet known by many and some players , who would like to, are not streaming yet. We would like to change that! Therefore, we are happy to present our newest community project – the Reto Broadcasting Society.

In this society, we will challenge you regularly to make videos with certain themes or topics, as well as built a platform where you can help each other with your projects and questions. We will use the existing forum thread Videos and Pictures, which is the already established place for all things fan art.

The first challenge is now online and we cannot wait to see all your submissions! Every challenge will have a submission phase; a time frame where you can post your video in the thread. After this phase is over, we are going to collect the submissions and for now a public poll will decide the winner. And now comes the juicy bit. The winner of every challenge will get a special prize, which will always be announced in the challenge description. For the first challenge, you will, among other prizes, win an exclusive membership in our Reto Broadcasting Society – Officers' Lounge or in short RBS – Ol, which is basically a step up the ladder from the public RBS.[/b]

In order to become a member of the RBS – Officers' Lounge, you will have to fulfill the following parameters:

  • 1k or more subs
  • High quality videos
  • Positive coverage and general behaviour within the community
  • Regular coverage
  • A good standing and reputation within our community

The advantages of being a Officers' Lounge Member

In the Officers' Lounge you will also get regular challenges. These challenges will follow the same rules as those in the public RBS, but every submission will get a reward for views and participation. The prizes for the challenges will for example include give-away vouchers to boost your channel, more goodies and cross-promotion via the official Heroes & Generals channels. Additionally, everyone joining the RBS – Officers' Lounge will receive a Welcome Pack to get you kicked off and ready to record. As an exclusive feature, we will sometimes grant the participants access to test servers and sneak-peaks of what's to come.
You can apply for being a part of the Reto Broadcasting Society at: rbs@reto.dk

What about Twitch?

We want Twitch streamers to be a part of this and are currently discussing possibilities for our loyal Twitch community, which is an important part of this network. Since Twitch is more challenging to organize and measure, we have not yet found the best way to get it kicked off. However, there will be more coming and we are keen to hear your ideas, so please share them here.

I got this game solely for my brother. The training course gives you the OP guns but when you get the class, you equip BB guns. The next issue I have is that, this is WWII based and yet we are battling the USSR. Get your facts right. We did hate the commies but they were our Ally in this war. The new update has made it impossible for U.S. to win due to the spamming of tanks that are almost impenetrable.

Conclusion: This game is still in beta and shows alot of promise. If they fix the game mechanincs and balanced the classes and vehicles, this may just may be agood game. Until then I ask those who care about historical battles to wait until the creators of the game fix these issues

The game gives you really ♥♥♥♥ weapons in the beginning. Then you have to:
1. Grind
2. Grind
3. Grind
4. Grind
5. Grind
6. Grind
7. Grind
8. Grind
9. Grind
10. Grind
11. Grind
12. Grind
13. Grind
14: unlock 1 weapon or vehicle

15: repeat All steps above.

The game is overal boring because spawns are really bad. You spawn in the middle of an open field, where you are sniped within 5 seconds because almost everybody snipes.

If you want to have FUN?: Pay actual money (and it's expensive)

Ok, after putting a LOT of time and money into it:

I got perma banned on twitch for asking a simple question, without expressing my honest feeling about the newest "update", which is basically another deep downgrade after "Adams".

So I've still got a year of veterancy around, they treat the people that buy gold to support them like sh!t - because the people are never right and reto can't never ever be wrong.

I've bought the veterancy because I had faith that they won't cluster♥♥♥♥ the game and yet, they can dig even deeper.

Here's a quick overview of the top 5 downgrades:

  1. First Rommel, adding INSANE deployment queues for everyone.

  2. Then they added pooled resources, making 18 tanks vs 18 fighters possible - ohh keeeh... (fyi that's still possible via matchmaker)

  3. Somewhere along the way they screwed up the shaders...

  4. Adams: Adding some weird as hell cone fire - ok maybe, but:
adding autoaim for idiots that cannot guess where a gun will shoot at while hipfiring when all the bullets HAVE TO leave the barrel; that stuff even introduced a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of WTF - Headshot?! "bugs".

  5. And now... Squad 2.whatever:
    Could have been so easy, remove the class restriction on the squads add a "commo rose", so you can mix and command 'em like in Battlefield;
but nope, they had to do it the "right" way again - I'm cutting it short:
    • removed the join friend functionality
    • removed ability to pick a battle (can't even join your own ATs without a squad)
    • making squads is now tied to ribbon progress - which is tied to a single soldier instead of a faction
    • added horrific fun with the matchmaker (wooohooo we need moar ping)

Final verdict: don't expect anything but letdowns all the way; 6 months ago, I'd have recommended the game to everyone, but now... forget it - leave the devs to their own ignorance.

I normally do not write reviews, but this games idea of "balance" is just so abstract, the aims of the developers so ignorant and against their playerbase, and last but not least: The interface/s so bad that I simply cannot stay quiet on this one.

I have played for quite some time now, and I have one thing to say:
There is no balance anywhere. Not asymetrical, nor symetrical.

The developers, "Reto-Moto", are going against their own players, trying to fix the balance through not thought out updates (see the recent squad update for example. If you are lucky you get a "fair" match. Otherwise the enemy or you have some squads that the other doesn´t)
And then we come to the gameplay. Its a bunch of snipers with different guns, so to say. Snipers rule the map, tankers the building, and Infantry is just a target. Except Infantry snipers. Then there are "wood fairies" (players camping in the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ woods trying to get kills, nothing else) and the AT infantry: Armed with the completely unrealistic AT weaponry.

So how can a grenade that is meant to be used against light tanks destroy the mighty King tiger? I dunno! Ask Reto!

Now that we have come to reto, one thing first:
They dont like us, just our money.

For example: The censoring is strong in this game and the forum. Anything against the developers or their decisions is going to be taken down no questions asked.

War seemed fine, until you realize the recently buffed nation always wins.

Thus, the final statement: If you got alot of money, hate teamplay, like completely unrealistic gameplay, and love fighting 4 tanks with 1 plane: This is the game for you.
Otherwise stay far,far away!

The publisher changes core game mechanics with every update. Some of the changes are minor, and some of them are game changing (read: game breaking). With the latest update named ‘Devyatayev – Squad’ AKA 'Squad 2.0', Reto has completely rewritten how the game is played.

I've been playing for about one year and logged around 300/800 hours via the client and steam respectively. I enjoyed the game through all the updates until now. The Devyatayev - squad update neglected to solve many of the old bugs and instead it has created a hostile player base while leaving many players worried that they (Reto, the publishers) either do not listen to players, or refuse to accept the overwhelming negative feedback from players. In my opinion this is not the game I once loved to play, it's now simply Squad 2.0.

I'll speak with my wallet and I choose not to support the developer any longer for this "Early Access".

Update: The latest hotfix (as of 06/15/2016) has made the game unplayable for many players. H&G on Windows 10 with DirectX 12 results in constant crashes.

The squad update limits this game severely. It removes the ability to play tanker, pilot, paratrooper, recon, and infantry in the same battle. It actually removes the ability to switch between different characters of the same class if you are squad leader without giving everyone a large xp penelty. Ping has gotten worse by far. The generals side of the map has gotten impossible to use intelligently as surrounding the enemy or deploying troops tactically has no reward and in fact regardless of how you use them you are punished by a morale system.

Click "To Battle!"
Wait 30 sec to customize your squad...
Wait another 30 sec to load into the battle...
Wait for 3 team members to fall before you can spawn...
2 minutes later you can finally spawn into the game...
Instantly die after 2 seconds because your spawn is already being camped by enemy tanks and snipers at this point...
Wait again for 3 team members to fall...

You have just experienced the new D-Update... *Slow Clap*

Waiting times have increased dramatically in the D-Update and the game flow has come to a grinding halt. Part of that is due to the squad system which now commonly matches 21 vs 18 players in battles and forces you to wait for 3 team members to fall every time you die...

On top of that you mostly get thrown into matches which were abandoned by their previous players because they are already over or very onesided. The option to choose your own battles is no longer possible if you queue on your own or have no assault teams deployed. You hardly ever get to actually play a match from start to finish. Instead you now have to constantly act as a filler to play the remaining 5 minutes in a lost match that everyone has already given up on.

To crown it all add to the already existing annoying fog and the horrible lighting the new "improved" UI which blocks half your screen with giant A1, B2, C4 markers that cannot be turned off unless you individually aim down the sight while pointing at every single marker...

What the hell happened to this game I used to love...

June 15th "Optimization" Patch:
- FPS decreased again instead of increased (same as the last "optimization" patch)
- Game looks blurry now as if you forgot to wear your glasses
- Constant stutters are back that some users experienced when the D-Update was first released
- Game crashes every 5 minutes

Time to uninstall this piece of garbage and wait for Battlefield 1

The recent Devyatayev update has rendered this game unplayable. I believe I speak on behalf of all tankers, regardless of faction, when I say that we have never seen such a ♥♥♥♥-up come out of Reto's development team since the creation of AT grenades.
Enjoy having to wait 5 minutes to spawn.
Enjoy spawning on top of spawn-killing landmines.
Enjoy getting rushed by Allied AT ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s on motorcycles going way too fast for you to defend yourself.
Enjoy being an easy target for U.S planes because they can drop 2 bombs in a single succession as opposed to 1 (Thanks Reto)!
Tiger-II most potent tank of World War II MY ♥♥♥! The armor system of tanks is literal ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I don't know how I'm supposed to be able to 'take out any other tank on the battlefield beyond 2000 meters with ease' if I can't even penetrate the frontal turret armor of an IS-2 at point blank in my Tiger.

As for the infantry, the U.S and Soviets dominate. M1 Carbine with full auto or AVS with full auto will insta-♥♥♥♥ on any German player's gun regardless of the range between the two soldiers. The Americans are full of little 11 year old ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s who cry "Nerf! Nerf!" at anyone who uses their own guns against them or anyone who actually lines up some quality headshots on them with a Gewehr or Kar98. The creators of this game are continuously spewing out new ♥♥♥♥ for U.S and Soviets and at the same time buffing their already overpowered weapons. The German faction is left out every update but still somehow wins the most battles in every war. But that's okay, because it still says BETA at the top! Right? Since 2013? Right? My advice: Unless you want to join one of the overpowered factions that are America and USSR where it's as easy to get kills that you might aswell hack, don't waste your time or your money on this game until a huge update is released

Squad system is broken. I spent an entire map caping and defending a forward point. Spawning allies in my jeep and ratatatting from the gunner seat. Then about 40 seconds before victory, 'YOUR SQUAD LEADER HAS REMOVED YOU FROM THE SQUAD" and my game was over.

That's after waiting 9 minutes for a server.

I enjoy the vehicles and combat. The microtransactions and poorly implimented mechanics are causing me to uninstall.
This game gives you a hint of really fun gameplay, but ruins it with money and frustration.
