What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“When we started developing Heroes & Generals it was with the intention of creating a game for the gamers as much as for ourselves. The games we have been creating in the past (back in the IO Interactive days) have all been shrouded in secrecy until they were released and therefore always carried a number of things that players did not like but we were unable to change. Because it is the players that in the end plays the game we think they should have greater influence on the development.

Since the very early days of the project in 2011 (pre-alpha stage), we invited players in to play the game and have involved our community in the making of Heroes & Generals and listened to the feedback from them. So it's a natural extension of the way we develop Heroes & Generals, to also include the Steam Community, by going Early Access.”

How long will this game be in Early Access?

“We're approaching the end of our Open Beta/Early Access phase, but it's still too soon for us to put a date on when we'll launch.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We're still tweaking, fixing bugs and adding new features to Heroes & Generals, and even though we feel that the game is now fun and quite stable, we still wish to get all things 'just right' before we call it 'launched'.

We do not plan to do a full server reset when the game launches.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We're in the end of our Open Beta phase, preparing for launch.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Heroes & Generals is Free2Play. We wish to create a healthy, solid and well-balanced game and community, where you can get a great experience playing the game, no matter how much money you spend! There is already an in-game economy in place, where you earn in-game credits and warfunds for being active in the game, by playing FPS-missions and/or handling Assault Teams.

You can also buy gold, which you can use to buy practically everything, usually it give you the option of buying stuff ‘early’, so you don’t need to grind that much. We also offer a Veteran Membership to accommodate wishes of having an all-inclusive package, where you earn xp, ribbon-xp, in-game credits and warfunds at an increased rate etc.

Prices are regularly being tweaked now in Open Beta/Early Access and we will most likely still tweak prices at and after launch.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We encourage the players to participate in discussions in our forum: http://forum.heroesandgenerals.com/

When you write feedback about the game, remember to try and explain your reasons. Constructive criticism will help us build a better game for you.”

UPDATE: 'Spaatz' is now online!

We have just released the 'Spaatz' update, which brings a new action packed Skirmish map, new weapons, a new battle briefing screen and an improved battle report for the 'Heroes' players. While the 'Generals' get a deeper gameplay experience with better balanced wars through limited army resources for their faction. All players can now communicate with each other, even when not online, through the new in-game messaging system.

New Skirmish map
The new Village Skirmish map is set in the fields of rural France with a sunken ruin, a chateau and a small farm as key objectives. This map is designed with less distance between the objectives, making it more tight and more action packed than the other Skirmish maps as all objectives are in danger at all times. Also, the more dramatic shape of the terrain has been specifically designed to counter spawn-campers.

New weapons: P08 Pistol and M1917 Revolver
The new weapons are of almost iconic nature: German soldiers can now get the classic high-precision P08 Pistol, while the US soldiers will be able to live out their inner cowboy with the hard hitting M1917 Revolver.

Limited faction resources in the campaign
The 'Spaatz' update introduces limited army resources for the two factions. The resources for the Assault Teams are drawn from a shared 'stockpile' with only so and so many new resources being produced within a certain time-interval for each faction.

This gives a better balance between the two factions, as the winning strategy is no longer merely to send a massive amount of Assault Teams to the frontline, but now the Generals have to carefully consider where they deploy and direct their troops, as well as to coordinate their joined efforts better.

Ingame messaging
We have made a new in-game email system, where you may send messages to other players, also when they’re not online. In order to send a message to someone you need to add him as a friend and he needs to have you added as a friend too. So now you can communicate with the other generals, fellow clan-members or other players who are not online at the same time as you.

New mission briefing and battle report
The campaign and the core action game missions are also brought closer together by the new mission briefing, showing what you fight for in each mission and what the objectives are when the mission is loading. On top of that, the enhanced battle report shows details about the results of a battle, as well as give you an overview of your performance after a mission has ended.

Lots of other fixes and tweaks
  • Faster tank turret tracking
  • All windows can now be destroyed on all maps
  • Raised Veteran Membership XP-rank bonus from +25% to +100%
  • WarServer compensates all players for their veteran membership and ribbon booster time lost due to server downtime
  • Bullet tracers have been tweaked to look more realistic and less synthetic
  • Uniforms are now stored in the equipment depot when promoting a character to general
  • ...and much more...

An MMOFPS, combined with RTS, how many games have something like that?
Not a lot I can tell you.

I am a long time veteran, who has played the game for over 2 years, with well over 1000 hours of gameplay (probably closer to 2000). I have seen a lot of builds come and go, a lot of bugs come and go (and come, and come more and more).
Now, I could just say that this game is perfect and everyone should play because it is. But it's not.
So I want to talk about the good things and the bad things.

First things first: 1 word, 4 letters: BETA.

The thing that really grabbed me was the RTS part. I play together with a group called 'AHQ' (Allied High Command). We've been playing together for a long time and truly became brothers in arms.

The first think we always do, is put our units (assault teams) on the front-line. The power to decide which battle has how many resources is very different from other games. The game lives by a standard: 'The war is balanced, but not every battle is'. Sometimes you have tanks, planes, APC's, snipers etc. Sometimes you don't have anything and losing the battle seems certain.

It is exactly those battles that make this game so interesting. The enemy bombards you with tanks and planes and all you have is an old rifle and your trusty bazooka. You cannot fight them in the open, if you are fighting an assault you've already lost. But in a defensive match, you can win with anything. It will be hard, but if you manage to win, or even lose but kill off a lot of tanks and planes, the enemy generals will cry their eyes out.

In the current stage, the RTS is lacking. It's very basic and the balancing-factors are not yet in place. This creates unbalanced wars (axis almost always win) which are not always fun. However, BETA. The RTS is not yet fully developed and a lot is to come. If you cannot stand losing all the wars, come back in a few months.

The FPS is very fun, the amount of weapons is still small, and things like bipods on mg's are not yet developed. However the FPS feels pretty authentic (note: authentic does not equal realistic) with pretty big maps. There are a lot of vehicles to chose from, including tanks, planes, APC's, jeeps and even bikes.

Vehicles are not spawned every X time on the same spot. Players spawn them from a certain assault team. When a general sents in 18 light tanks, you can spawn 18 light tanks. If the general does not sent you tanks... no tanks for you. To be able to spawn a tank or something else, you need the right character. An infantry-man cannot spawn a tank, so you have to wait till a certain level before you can upgrade (make sure you always keep 1 character infantry, otherwise you are stuck in matchmaking forever). You can have as many characters as you want.

There are of course a lot of bugs and glitches in the FPS, every once in a while when you step off a bike, you fly 50 meters into the air and die when coming back to the ground.
The amount of maps is currently also small, with 2 skirmishes, and 4 assault/defence missions. More are in production though.

The weapon balance is also still an issue, the fact that the Allies have a better SMG while the axis have a better MG are there to stay. But you will notice some weapons are simply to strong.

I can highly recommend everyone to try it, and if you feel there are currently to many issue's, you can always come back in a few months when everything is a bit further advanced.

PS: I know the Steam does not say anything close to 1000 hours. This game has been active on a browser for 2 years, so that is where I have played most my hours.

Please notice that i play this game since closed beta, so dont take my steam playtime in consideration.

This game had everything going just fine a few updates ago. Now since a few months ago, you have to buy EVERYTHING.
The level of P2W on this game is just absurd. This game have turned into the exact definition of pay2win.

Let me give you an example:

The battles are extremely unbalanced. You only have a rifle and a simple grenade, but the enemy have tanks. You could just buy a basic AT weapon to protect yourself, right? Wrong!
You cant buy any AT weapon, unless you unlock it with advanced explosive skills. Dont have the skill? You can buy it for real money.

You want to be a tank commander? Fine, but you will have to buy it for real money too, so hand over 10 dollars, pal (you can just advance your level with your normal soldier, but since the enemy will always be overpowered, you cant do ♥♥♥♥ in any battle, and that mean no xp).

You also have to buy your tank (really?), but it wont stop there. Your first tank dosen't even have a cannon, only a MG (REALLY?), so what is the point on driving a pz1 if the enemy have pershings? Buy more stuff, of course!
Want to have a better tank? Pay 10 dollars again to unlock a better tank (that was suppose to be only unlockable with xp, but hey? this is a P2W, right?)

At the end, the game forces you to spend real money (unlike many other F2P games, where payed content dosen't affect that much the other players gameplay, like TF2 or WoT).

Oh, did i mentioned that you will have to buy those stuff twice?
Yes, one for the german faction and other for the american faction, because your progress with each faction are individual

If you enjoy being killed by an overpowered enemy without any means to defend yourself, go ahead.
Now, if you want a game like this, but dont want to be always spending your hard earned money just to have some fun, i recommend you buy rising storm/red orchestra 2. At least on those games you will only have to pay once and will have all the content available equally for everyone.

Ah, this game... I have only played it for 2 hours and I can already tell everything about it.

I start, create my character, grab my rifle and head into battle.

Skirmish map, Call of Duty 2-esque, it felt amazing.

Hunt down some Allied forces, capture points, win, earn in-game currency.

Tutorial goes on, "BUY THIS WEAPON".

No thanks I want to manage my money by myself.

Second go, Assault and Defend map.

All hell goes loose, enemies with weapons that 2 shot you, tanks galore, watching dog fights from the ground, in-game lag. Realize that my grenades are useless against armored vehicles. Somehow end up winning the round.

Check my character's inventory to see what went so wrong in that map. Realize there are lots of weapons and attatchments to get.

Realize you either need 100h+ of play time or a loose credit card.

No thank you.

Every F2P game I have seen so far gets corrupted with the dev's need to earn money... I know you guys have made an amazing job with this game and want to get something out of it but ruining new players's experience is just wrong. I just hope the P2W aspect gets smashed so no one has to pay 100$ to have some fun time.

I really had some great expectation about this game, but the mountain free players have to climb is too steep.

Wow, a really refreshing game, fun, new, enjoyable, but at the end of the day, People who pay $$$ will get the upper hand. New tanks, Russian Weapons, etc. Which is pretty sad. When i played this in Alpha, my god was it good, and its even better now!, but it ♥♥♥♥es me off rank 1 getting all the dosh on day 1 and they have a upperhand due to paying, Its really sad.
