What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“When we started developing Heroes & Generals it was with the intention of creating a game for the gamers as much as for ourselves. The games we have been creating in the past (back in the IO Interactive days) have all been shrouded in secrecy until they were released and therefore always carried a number of things that players did not like but we were unable to change. Because it is the players that in the end plays the game we think they should have greater influence on the development.

Since the very early days of the project in 2011 (pre-alpha stage), we invited players in to play the game and have involved our community in the making of Heroes & Generals and listened to the feedback from them. So it's a natural extension of the way we develop Heroes & Generals, to also include the Steam Community, by going Early Access.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We're approaching the end of our Open Beta/Early Access phase, but it's still too soon for us to put a date on when we'll launch.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We're still tweaking, fixing bugs and adding new features to Heroes & Generals, and even though we feel that the game is now fun and quite stable, we still wish to get all things 'just right' before we call it 'launched'.

We do not plan to do a full server reset when the game launches.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We're in the end of our Open Beta phase, preparing for launch.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Heroes & Generals is Free2Play. We wish to create a healthy, solid and well-balanced game and community, where you can get a great experience playing the game, no matter how much money you spend! There is already an in-game economy in place, where you earn in-game credits and warfunds for being active in the game, by playing FPS-missions and/or handling Assault Teams.

You can also buy gold, which you can use to buy practically everything, usually it give you the option of buying stuff ‘early’, so you don’t need to grind that much. We also offer a Veteran Membership to accommodate wishes of having an all-inclusive package, where you earn xp, ribbon-xp, in-game credits and warfunds at an increased rate etc.

Prices are regularly being tweaked now in Open Beta/Early Access and we will most likely still tweak prices at and after launch.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We encourage the players to participate in discussions in our forum: http://forum.heroesandgenerals.com/

When you write feedback about the game, remember to try and explain your reasons. Constructive criticism will help us build a better game for you.”

'Spaatz addon #1' update is now Live!

The ‘Spaatz addon #1′ update is now live on the servers and introduces Open faction fighting, a Notification tray and more.

If you’ve been following our weekly 'Devstreams' on Twitch you might have heard us talk about an update for Spaatz, but we decided to split this into two updates: ‘Spaatz addon #1′ and ‘Spaatz addon #2′.

‘Addon #2′ will hold a new and greatly improved hit detection system, as well as a few other changes for the action game - this update is being tested at the moment and will be released as soon as it has been greenlit by our QA guys. But read on to see what the new Spaatz addon #1 offers:

Open faction fighting – ability to play both factions in staged battles

It is now possible to play with soldiers from both factions in what is called ‘staged battles’. ‘Staged battles’ are evenly balanced battles in terms of resources and are disconnected from the war, so the outcome of these battle will not influence the war. Basically it’s the same as the old ‘training missions’, but now with the option of playing as either US or German soldiers, and the battle will still be the two factions fighting each other.

Before you may join battles in the war you are asked to choose a faction which you will play with in war battles until the war ends. These battles are not set up to be balanced as they are created as a result of how the Officers and Generals move and manage their Assault Teams in the war, and some battles can be really challenging – but you also get to be a part of the war and to influence the outcome.

Notification tray

A notification tray has been added next to the chat icon, where you now will be able to get all sorts of relevant notifications. This update holds 3 types of notifications, but future updates will introduce more:
  1. First battle of the day bonus, which basically just tells you that you receive 4 gold for free each day after you have completed your first battle, no matter if you won or lost.
  2. Ammo refill and update repair costs, which tells you how much you’ve spend on auto-repair of your mods or auto-refills of ammo.
  3. Battle reports – you will now be able to find your recent battle reports in the notification tray.
Other fixes and tweaks
  • Reinforcement costs are significantly reduced for most Assault Team types.
  • You may now claim your veteran bonus for one of your previous battles, even if you’re not already a veteran member, by buying veteran membership from a battle report.
The full changelog can be found here: http://forum.heroesandgenerals.com/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=28965

Mobile Command
The Mobile Command app moves along on its own release cycle (when at all possible). The Android version has been updated today to be compatible with Spaatz addon #1, but the new iOS version is still in Apple's review queue.

This game was very close to awesome, but the developers ruined it with poor choices that ruined gameplay.

-pay to win
-one gun
-hero swapping
-worst hit detection I've ever seen in an online shooter game
-hacks
-faction locking

As I was writing my review of this game, I realized the entire series of flaws can be summarized in one very easy statement: YOU HAVE TO BUY GRENADES.

As you play the game, you earn silver currency. That silver currency can be spent to upgrade weapons, or buy new weapons, vehicles, etc. Saving up enough currency to buy a "good" weapon requires you to grind at least 300+ hours. Meanwhile, as you use grenades or anything with ammunition, you have to spend your currency to replenish your grenade supply. The entire system is designed to make sure a casual player NEVER EVER EVER accomplishes anything in this game. It's a dirty, money-grubbing scheme to wear casual players down and finally push them to the point at which they reluctantly break out their wallets. As a non-paying casual player: you will never get a "good" gun. You will never level up. You will never be anything but fodder waiting to be slaughtered by the pay-to-win players ...and yes, this game absolutely groups beginners, pay-to-winners, and 500+ hour players into the same exact battles. Again, it's a scheme designed to frustrate non-paying casual players into taking out their wallets to overcome the disadvantage.

One gun: Yeah, this is self explanatory. Guns have weight, and the game designers intentionally designed the weight of the guns in such a way to prevent you from carrying more than one. Unless of course you pay to play, in which case you can pay for light-weight guns that enable you to carry two. This limitation is exacerbated by the fact that each type of gun is strictly limited to valued use in very specific circumstances. For example, machine guns are great inside of houses, but are completely useless at long range. The horrible single-gun system also contributes to the ill-effects of the hero swapping feature.

Hero swapping: In mid-battle, players can change their participating "hero." The game is designed in such a way that each "hero" becomes specialized. There are tank drivers, pilots, paratroopers, snipers, machine gunners, etc. Each has a specific role. Some battle maps cater to specific types. For example, some maps have wide rivers that must be crossed on foot. Obviously these maps cater to sniper-rifles. It's important to stress the point that you CAN NOT change weapons once you've joined a game. As soldiers trudge across the open water, snipers pick them off. Machine gunners, whom lack range effectiveness are basically worthless on these types of maps, as there is little to no close-quarters combat. Here's the trick: the game allows players to switch between heroes. Thus, if you happen to have played 1000+ hours, you will have the ability to swap out your useless machine-gunner for a more useful sniper. It's very strange. Rather than simply switching guns - which would make much more sense, you have to actually switch heroes. Unfortunately, leveling up those heroes takes hundreds of hours each. Like other strange mechanics in this game, the hero-swap mechanic was clearly implemented to encourage people to pay-to-win. IE: pay $50 and you can have both a great machine-gunner hero and a great sniper hero without having to invest 1000+ hours like everyone else. Why not just allow people to carry 2 guns, or even allow them to swap guns during battle? Because that wouldn't encourage people to pay money!

Hit detection: When I first started playing this game, this was the very first thing I noticed. I would run up to an enemy with my trusty machine-gun and start blasting. As I filled the stationary target with lead, my screen displayed spurts of blood - indicating that my shots were definitely hitting the target. Bullet after bullet slammed into the enemy's body. Then, slowly, as I continued to blast away, the target would turn towards me. Then the bullet-riddled enemy would fire one shot, and BOOM. I died. Yep, I shot him half-a-dozen times, and he one-shot-killed me and walked away. This same, frustrating scenario has happened to me literally hundreds of times. Check out the forums, and you will see that I am certainly not an isolated case. It happens to everyone. It's the most frustrating thing I have ever experienced in a multiplayer shooting game.

Hacks: While you may not necessarily consider this the fault of the game developers at first, you have to consider the entire pay-to-win scheme to fully understand the problem. This game is free to play. Anyone with a computer and an email address can play. If a player cheats and gets banned, then that player can simply register a new email address and cheat again. They don't lose anything, because they didn't pay anything. If a player had to pay $40 for a new account every time they got banned from cheating, they would quickly change their cheating ways as their bank accounts were drained from buying more and more new copies of the game to cheat with. However, since this is free-to-play, the cheaters don't care. They come in and have their fun ruining a game and getting 30-2 on the killboards. Then they get banned in a week and create a new account.. rinse-and-repeat. Believe me, the cheating is prevalent. As you play you will be saying "gee, I just saw a guy outrun a jeep, shoot me through a wall with a magical bullet from 500 meters away, and absorb 20 shots from a machine gun. this seems strange."

Overall, I am disappointed by the choices developers made with H&G. It could have been a unique and fun game, but unfortunately the greedy pay-to-win mechanics sabotaged what otherwise would have been a great experience.

WARNING. Devs / Support ban legit players. After 210 hours, I got banned for 'cheating/hacking' as they said in my support ticket. If you are interested in knowing more about this, go here: http://pastebin.com/iUaj91aM but you can skip this and keep reading the review below.

If you have insane good matches and is a very experienced FPS player (you listen to footsteps, you react to sound, twitch aiming, etc.) The Dev / Support WILL watch replays and ban you if they receive complains from other players, like in my case. DO NOT DEAL WITH SUPPORT. It's pointless and the support sucks (the support team seems to be one single man, and is known to be a d**chebag).

I won't even talk about the starter pack and the prices, it's a terrible business model just to save time and unlocks everything at a ridiculous price (Most expensive pack is at 100$+).

It's too bad because it is a very fun game to play and is amazingly fun if you get friends, but I guess my road ends here. If you still want to try this game out, be warned, anything can happen to your account.

Also:
-VERY bad hit detection (you can even see the guy bleed but you get no hit confirmed)
-Framerate on big maps can be horrible even on a big PC
-You need to refill grenades and rockets and they cost A LOT. It can be annoying for some if they want to save for a gun (which are also crazy expensive as well)
-1 Shot snipers are everywhere so get ready (you can quickly have access to those if you pay)

Super fun game, unlike other most recent released FPS games, this takes us back to an older time in the War, a more classic war experience. However, despite the brilliant idea, the fact that you have to spent RL money to purchase many upgrades and character boost, makes it unenjoyable. This should have a flat out price tag and allow everyone to enjoy ingame item upgrades with the ingame currancy, instead of RL money.

I don't know how I got into this game. To be honest, I can't even remember going in. All I can remember is my character waking up on the second floor of an abandoned house just outside the town where I lived and that I was wearing some soldier's clothes. The name of the soldier was Karl Muller. I know this because I could read the name tag on the jacket. All this seemed very weird to me, but I decided to just go back home and figure out everything there. I needed to get out of those clothes; I didn’t want to be confused with someone else. Just as I was walking down, I heard someone's whistle and an engine running outside the house. When I stepped outside, I saw a man wearing some weird looking green uniform running towards a funny looking green small vehicle and leaving. I decided to steal a bicycle that was sitting right in front of the house and went for a ride through the fields. I figured it was the shortest way home. As I was making my way along the river, I heard a loud noise in the woods and then a clicking noise (metal on metal) right afterwards. I got off the bike and took protection behind a tall tree and all I remember is that I was very scared. I took a minute to look around and see where that noise was coming from. Then, I saw it. It was that man wearing the green uniform. He was lying on the floor, had a really long rifle and he was looking down to a wooden barn across the field. It was a long way, but I saw some men running in ad out of that barn. They were wearing a dark grey uniform (much like the one I was wearing) and looked desperate. It was almost as if they were running for their lives. Then the man shot another bullet with his rifle. It was so loud that I had to cover my ears. Then I looked towards the barn and saw one of those soldiers lying on the floor, motionless. The other soldiers were nowhere to be found and I remember feeling sorry for that guy. I asked myself- Why did this happened? Why? That sadness I felt for the guy quickly turned into anger, but to myself. I felt rage and resentment to my cowardly actions. This anger took control over myself and made me grab a shovel I had in my procession (don't know where it came from) and smashed it into that man's head. There was nothing he could do. I think it took one or two hits, but by the time I was done he was no longer part of this world. I grabbed his rifle and saw a complete different world through that scope. I saw tanks and loud fighter airplanes. I saw men in dark gray and green uniforms running everywhere. I saw them fighting over abandoned houses, bridges, and other sectors. I saw dead bodies flying several hundred meters up in the air. I saw a man on a motor bike running over three young soldiers and then exploding after hitting a tree. I saw smoke and heard loud explosions. All the things I saw, I saw them through the scope of this rifle. A rifle I DIDN'T pay for. Then I quickly realized I was a soldier and that I was sent to this Free to Play war to see all this epic things and to recommend this game to you.

There is a Free to Play soldier in all of us.

10/10 -Would steal your scopes, cars, bikes, and tanks from you again.

+ Large, sprawling battlefields
+ Very detailed and impressive amount of customization options
+ Leveling skills is done through accolades, which helps one tailor their character to their playstyle
+ Vehicle controls are smooth and enjoyable
+ Stat buffs can be gained by displaying the appropriate medals; this feels rewarding, but doesn't necessarily break the game
+ Despite microtransactions, gameplay appears agreeably balanced

- This game places a massive and overwhelming focus on microtransactions; everything is for sale, at any time, and the prices range from moderate to outrageous
- A plethora of blatant hacking, and not a lot being done about it (I am usually very cynical about claims of hacking, but when I see one or more players literally flying of their own accord, sniping headshots from across the map, that's definitely hacking)
- Poor terrain rendering
- Matchmaking often takes an inordinately long time to find a game
- Poor squad system

Where do I start with this game?
Heroes and Generals is an amazing take on the WWII FPS area.

Only in Heroes and Generals can I wolf whistle my team mates into getting on the back of my push bike.
Only in Heroes and Gernals will I see a team mate kill himself 2-3 times trying to grenade tanks.
Only in Heroes and Generals will I spend hours leveling an infantry man to become recon, only to then be surprised how the rifle has a significant increase in cost.
Only in Heroes and Generals will I have an entire team of role-playing allies who make the game much more entertaining.

H&G is an amazing game, if you can cope with a few little nudges here and there.
And the best thing on H&G you ask? It's the only Free to play that's not a Russian learning simulator.

So I've heard that this game is Pay2Win, yet from my experience you just pay to avoid grinding. I haven't spent any money on this game and love it a lot so I don't understand where all the hate is coming from.

I know the reviews are bad but at least give the game a try.

I would highly recommend the game it’s immensely enjoyable. If you don’t mind a slight grind in the beginning until you find your favorite play style this game will find you dumping many hours into it. Many people complain about how it is pay to play which is untrue. It does take a while to unlock certain weapons. Though they do add a little advantage when you get them it is not so much that a good player can’t still be a killing machine with only the starting weapons. The vehicles do require maintenance but once you’re able to afford a vehicle your rank and pay are more than able to cover it without even really noticing unless you’re just wasting resources. Check in the community for guides on different weapons and combinations.

Its a great game, needs a couple tweeks as most early access games do. One thing i think it needs it a voice chat, perhaps its proximity chat so everyone around you can hear (including enemies) but definitly needs it. If its already in the game and i just cant figure it out please do tell me XD

Dont play this game, seriously.

the game has a great idea. path progression, faction based fighting. awesome ideas, perfect... until you actually play the game.

horrible hit detection, ballistics like shooting tenis balls, and at least one hacker per match. Also snipers, SNIPERS EVERYWHERE, and why not? the game rewards you to be a sniper, the longer range a kill the higher the exp. with an average weapon you get 5 maybe 6 exp for a kill, 10 if savior (meaning you stoped them from killing a buddy) 60 if defensive (meaning inside a cap point). average sniper kill at 200m? 75-80 not adding defensive or savior. so you can imagine everymatch has at least half the teams made of snipers.

Also very pay to win, the bought mgs and sub mgs can almost snipe themselves and the basic rifle has to be almost point blank to hit, that is of course the hit detection lets you.

laggy as all hell, ping is a very big problem, buggy, just overall a poorly done game

Could be an awesome game if done right... but its not, and sadly this games ideas are almost exactly what i think an awesome ww2 shooter would be, but i end up RAGING 90% of the time

if you want to try it and at least pretend like you found the ww2 shooter your looking for, go for it, but for god sakes DONT GIVE THEM ANY MONEY!

As some people says that this game is pay to win i dont think so because you can simpli win like 3000 bucks per match (min) and traducing it to sige it is the easiest way to get mone
then the poor detectione sistem thats one of the two wrong things in the game but all the people that says that this is wrong thin in how many times it saved you from a eadshot or an insta death shot
the second wrong thing its that there are some hakers but not in every match there only in some war matches
forgoting that 2 things i like this gamr because you can be anything, and you can take any weapone that you see and then this game isnt pay to win because you can buy all the weapones with the normal currenciy and yo can chose to buy upgrades or not and you get 4 of gold every first match of the day
and if you dont like to level up slowly wn you are higer lvl like 6 the game at that level offers you the paratrooper and remember wen you have a new soldier play the totorial to get some money and get your sodier lvl 1 instantly
this game is good and adictive so i highly recomend it
have fun and join germany
the best of the lucks
i give this game a rate of 7 of 10

Hard to reccomend. I can see the potenial in this but it's been in beta for years but it feels like it has a few more years to go before it near finished and balance.
I had some fun with it and put in about 80 hours over a few weeks but I'd say most of them hours were spent waiting to play and waiting to spawn. The thing that I don't like about it is that at the time of writing this there is next to know co-operation in the fps part of the game. no in game communication except for text chat, which is hard to do when in a battle.
I really want to like this game and will check in on it again in a few months after one or to builds/update patches to the game to see if it has progressed.

This game is special!
Let me first say that the historicall information is By far the most accurate Iv'e ever seen in a free2pay game! Im glad to see how were sticking to the facts, this game is a testimant to germany's victory over the allies in ww2.
I didn't realize that during ww2 humans thought that Filling their pants with wet cement was a good idea for war. allbeit it would be interesting to see what armor that they would supply but sadly you dont get the chance to find out,
Because in the time it would take for you to trip over in the 50 pounds inside your pants You have already been shot from across the map by a tank shooting through fog as thick as a Brick wall.

The most historically accurate information i learned from this game is the surprisingly large amount of people who had lew garrages disease who were enlisted durring WW2, The aiming and movement are Superbly accurate in in account.
Also the super realistic frictionless soap bars ( AKA as Tanks ) are the only way to move from spawn to the battlefield. But to keep it fair Everybody is given RPGs to use and are readly available at any time you see a tank or a man on a bike
There are many Types of tanks such as small tank ,medium tank ,big tank & bigger tank.
With 4 Months of trainning and play time, you to can advance to the small tank!

The complex team play is another key feature of this game, Caputring key points and more points.
You and your team can comunicate through Hi-Quality text, As any good tacticale FPS knows, text is most important way to give commands in the heat of battle!

This Games realistic emursion made me feel that I too was a man durring the second world war with lew garrages disease and cement in my pants.

-good on ya devs

Heroes and Generals takes me back about 10 years and invokes memories of Battlefield 1942. It has the control points, vehicles, and the same overcast dreary feel that BF1942 had. The devlopers have added some modern features such as a leveling system, perks, weapon modification, iron sights, squads and a stategy meta game that make it a modern WWII themed shooter. Unlike BF1942 Heroes and Generals lacks the balance, mods and fun that got me into PC gaming back in 2003.

Running around in a vehicle with friends on teamspeak is a hell of alot of fun. The weapon are very accurate and will kill players in 2-3 shots in the chest. Bullets have travel time and drop over distance. Landing a headshot on a jeep driver who is trying to run you over is satisifing experience. Grenades are deadly in buildings, but are a limited use item. The control point based gameplay keeps players from both sides engaged in combat throughout the game.

The games loses all the fun if you play with randoms. There is no good way to coordinate in game with members of your team or squad, and the free to play nature of the game attracts less serious players. Outside of a limited number of single use anti-tank rockets on select points there is no way for low level players to effectivity fight tanks. Those who spent real money on unlocks like tanks and the sniper rifle(which costs $10 in gold) have an unfair advantage over new players which leads to immense frustration. While the small arms are balanced between the US and German factions, the tanks are not blanced. The US get a light tank that can kill other tanks with a powerful cannon that can damage any german tank. The german's light tank is only equipped with 2 machine guns that cannot penetrate any US tank. The lack of anti-tank weapons and outclassed german tanks leads to spawn camping.

I understand this is a free to play game and the developers need microtransactions to keep funding further development of the game. However they throw balance out the window and push people towards buying weapon and vehicle unlocks. Outside of cosmetic items anything can be earned by playing enough. After 33 hours on a single solder and placing consistently in the top quarter of players in the matches I had purchased an sub machine gun, a rocket launcher, and a more powerful rifle. The all mighty sniper rifle and lightweight anti-tank grenades were still 30 to 40 hours of gameplay away for me.

For a game that has been in development for 3 years I expected a much more refined product. Thankfully I did not spend a cent on this game.
