What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“When we started developing Heroes & Generals it was with the intention of creating a game for the gamers as much as for ourselves. The games we have been creating in the past (back in the IO Interactive days) have all been shrouded in secrecy until they were released and therefore always carried a number of things that players did not like but we were unable to change. Because it is the players that in the end plays the game we think they should have greater influence on the development.

Since the very early days of the project in 2011 (pre-alpha stage), we invited players in to play the game and have involved our community in the making of Heroes & Generals and listened to the feedback from them. So it's a natural extension of the way we develop Heroes & Generals, to also include the Steam Community, by going Early Access.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We're approaching the end of our Open Beta/Early Access phase, but it's still too soon for us to put a date on when we'll launch.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We're still tweaking, fixing bugs and adding new features to Heroes & Generals, and even though we feel that the game is now fun and quite stable, we still wish to get all things 'just right' before we call it 'launched'.

We do not plan to do a full server reset when the game launches.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We're in the end of our Open Beta phase, preparing for launch.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Heroes & Generals is Free2Play. We wish to create a healthy, solid and well-balanced game and community, where you can get a great experience playing the game, no matter how much money you spend! There is already an in-game economy in place, where you earn in-game credits and warfunds for being active in the game, by playing FPS-missions and/or handling Assault Teams.

You can also buy gold, which you can use to buy practically everything, usually it give you the option of buying stuff ‘early’, so you don’t need to grind that much. We also offer a Veteran Membership to accommodate wishes of having an all-inclusive package, where you earn xp, ribbon-xp, in-game credits and warfunds at an increased rate etc.

Prices are regularly being tweaked now in Open Beta/Early Access and we will most likely still tweak prices at and after launch.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We encourage the players to participate in discussions in our forum: http://forum.heroesandgenerals.com/

When you write feedback about the game, remember to try and explain your reasons. Constructive criticism will help us build a better game for you.”

Update ‘Utz’ introducing the new Forward Airfield map is now live!

This brand-new update brings a much requested new feature – a brand new map! The update is named Utz (after General Willibald Utz) and here’s a quick overview of the new features we’ve added for you to enjoy!

New Map: Forward Airfield
The new map is an assault map called ‘Forward Airfield‘ and it represents the small forward airfields built all over Europe during the war. We have published a handful of blogposts detailing the objective on the map so click the links to learn more about 'the village church', 'the bridge and village' & 'the airstrip' itself.

Weapon Tweaks
We have made a handful of tweaks to weapon handling of grenades, semi-auto rifles and LMGs. Read more about the tweaks here!

Character Update
This update also brings an update to the characters in the game. They now look much better running and when standing on sloped terrain due to the improved IK and banking. We have also adjusted the control of the character while jumping to make it look and feel better.

Other Changes
Here is a list of some additional features in the Utz update.
  • Vehicle AT crates now spawn with the first weapon ready
  • Weather Settings tweaked and updated
  • Performance optimization of visual effects
  • Performance optimization of campaign map (esp. visible when having many ATs)
  • Combat Badge tweaks – see changelog in forum for details
…and much more…

Mobile Command
Mobile Command on Android has been updated to support the newly added the Utz build. We’re still waiting for the final confirmation on the iOS version.

For a more detailed changelog take a look at: this forum thread or jump straight into the action and see for yourself!

Utz Update Detail: Incoming Weapon Tweaks

When attacking or defending maps, including of course the NEW Forward Airfield map, you need your weapons to perform! And while we’re not introducing any new weapons in this build or making any major changes, we do have a collection of tweaks to make the weapons feel better, and hopefully be more enjoyable to play with!

  • Grenades now prime faster
This means that the time from when you start pressing the ‘firef’ button and until you can throw the grenade is much shorter
  • Semi-Auto Rifle Tweaks
    Less sway from moving
    Less aim penalty per bullet
  • Machinegun Tweaks
You can now begin shooting while running (not sprinting), but you will instantly begin walking giving a more natural transition.
  • Water impacts & Explosions
All water impacts and explosions have been tweak so they both perform better and look better.
  • Scoped Rifle ammunition now has smaller tracer
So you can still see your own shots and where they land, but they don’t give your position away

Oh! And by the way… When you get to the point where you decide that a crate of Panzerfausts is a better accessory for your vehicle than fuzzy dice – they now always spawn with the first one ready to pick up. This is a minor thing but f.ex helps to combat enemies spawn camping with vehicles.

Early Access Review
Until level three, this game plays very much like you're playing Day of Defeat but with more open maps and some working light vehicles, like bikes, jeeps, trucks, halftracks. The infantry combat is quite solid.

Then you hit level three. Now there are bigger maps. They feel a bit like a slog, but it's nice to mix it up and maybe it'll be cool to see the vehicles in play. Then you hit the tanks, and make a bunch of really unpleasant realizations.

First, if you've been using your grenades, you probably have the RPG. Great- it'll be nice to be able to defend yourself against any tanks that you can get close enough to, right?

So, you try to equip it and realize that the equipment carrying limit is so low that you can carry exactly your rifle and the RPG, and nothing else- no grenades, no SMG, etc.

That's fine... except you also can't swap loadouts mid-battle. So, you either need to commit to a loadout that'll leave you at a disadvantage over much of the now rather long battles. More problematically, if your team collectively doesn't have enough anti-tank firepower to deal with the enemy you can't do anything about it without leaving the battle.

One thing you personally can do is buy multiple characters, and then- here's the real problem- level up and equip each of them.

I'd happily pay $5/loadout to unlock some more loadouts. F2P developers need to get paid somehow, after all. However, I'm not going to commit to going through the entire F2P grind and economy for each loadout I want to be able to field in a battle.

Also, that RPG you unlocked? Each shell costs 710 credits. At level 3, you're making something like 1500 credits per battle. On the first battle where I managed to get into RPG-ish range with tanks I racked up over 5000 credits worth of ammunition costs getting one tank kill and some damage. Bit of a price tag, that.

This, incidentally, also only got me about 1/50 of the way towards unlocking the first of the AT grenade/mine line, which are weapons I could carry in my inventory and still have room to swap out my rifle for an SMG or carry some grenades or do something else. So much for that plan. I'm neither willing to grind nor pay for that.

So, maybe you try being a tank crew instead- you can convert your infantryman into a tanker at this point. Alternately, you could pay to buy a second pre-trained tanker.

Your first tank? It's got a machine gun as its weapon. You can kill other people in their first tank, but you're mostly just fodder for people who have ground or paid their way up to higher tier tanks. Definitely rubs the progression in your face in a bad way.

Unsurprisingly, with all of these factors combining, it's not that hard to find yourself fighting a better-armored enemy and not being able to do anything about it.

The larger maps are also something of a tedious slog to play and should be revisited, and the prevalence of huge open fields and- especially- narrow bridge chokepoints also accentuates the badness of the tank system heavily.

It's also worth noting you're paying credits for both ammunition and repairs on all your gear each match. For those first couple of levels, this doesn't seem like a big deal, but I assume it'll scale up ala other F2P games so that at higher levels you need to choose between using lower level gear or paying real money to be able to afford ammo and repairs. Not necessarily the end of the world- I'm a big fan of World of Tanks which uses the same system- but what I've seen of the game so far leaves me no trust or interest in getting further and discovering what else H&G has to offer.

There's the core of a really good game here. The infantry combat is good fun, and some of the Battlefield-esque chaos the infantry, gear, and vehicles can produce can shine through. However, the bigger maps/missions need work and everything related to armored combat is an unenjoyable mess that rubs the need to invest more time and money into the game in your face.

Do you want to be spawn camped consistently? Do you want to be spawn camped by tanks constistently? Do you want to be spawnkilled by tanks that are cheaper to buy than anti tank rocket launchers that everyone cant afford so you are forced into a deeper cycle of spawnkilling and hatred? Do you want to actually be able to blow up these spawn camping tank but be stopped before you pull the trigger by bullets fired in every direction by max level snipers in ghillie suits inside bushes? Do you want to smack someone with a shovel from behind three times only to have them do a 360 no scope and blow out your brains while you wonder what the **** is wrong with your shovel? Do you want to read the longest run on sentence you've ever read before? You don't, right?

Whenever I play this game I never quit it feeling happy, at all. This game is a rage inducing pile of ♥♥♥♥. If you expect to get anywhere in this game then prepare to open your wallet and pay for overpriced weapons that dominate your opponents like its going out of style. The outcome of your match depends on which side has the most tanks and snipers. Fix the matchmaking and throw around a few nerfs and I feel like this game would start to feel a little bit less excruciating to play

Heroes and Generals is primarily a first person shooter early access Beta which uses the Free to play model as it's revenue stream. This game probably incorporates everything I hate most about modern game developement on Steam. Obscenely overpriced in game items that matter (it's not just cosmetic), and persistant item degredation in-game so your forced to constantly repair in-game items just to keep using them. The loot treadmill at first sight seems steep but not unsurpassable untill the upper echelons when the best game weapons and vehicles are unlocked when the most obscene pay walls I've ever seen in any F2P game. The constant reminder that H&G is in "BETA" is reinforced often and becomes a common refrain on the H&G official forums as the Developers now enter their second year of Beta and fourth year in Developement. Yes that's right 4 years in Developement...All the while taking money from in-game items, boosts, and cosmetic items. Vaporware of the highest order made possible to the masses thanks to Steam. Heroes and Generals will forever be in a Beta state as the Devs continually release new content to enlarge their shop all the while never fixing game breaking issues and basic game engine flaws which if addressed would undoubtibly graduate the game to a full complete game state but that would take away their Beta crutch. I don't think I got burned by this game because I played alot of it but I surely will not give money to it. The entire Early access Beta, pay to win, micro transaction, steam driven ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game is the pox of all modern gamers and I'm somehow ashamed to have even played this game. I feel dirty and nothing short of paying for a full, complete, enjoyable retail final game will wash the stain from me.

I have been playing a lot of this game for over six months now. I used to find this game very enjoyable and even got some of my friends to try it out. Old patches seemed to move the game forward by removing some bugs. Now the Timoskenko update is out and has tons of issues. From balance to poor optimization of the general game. Poor servers with a ton of down time in the past two weeks. I dont consider this game pay to win but it would seem the developers dont care much about making general improvments. They would rather make "more" content to get more money from the people who actually buy stuff with money. I really hope they get there act together because this used to be a fun game. Honestly they really should be focused on making a enjoyable experience for the player then creating buggy and unbalanced mess of a patch that is Timoskenko.

This game is fun for the most part. But the extreme lack of balance and pay to win nature of it ruin the expirience. People can do all sorts of things to instantly by pass leveling up by buying soldiers and weapons with gold. Honestly you can't blame them for doing that. The amount of expirience you need to rank up to diffrent branches like tank driver or fighter pilot are insane. And the amount of expirience you need to unlock weapons with rediculous amoutns of money is often even higher. You can modify weapons to the point of having the standard rifle being a one hit kill no matter where you hit, and the game is over all just a cesspool of hacks and Pay to win players. The balance is the real issue here. I've entered matches before that are one team with only infantry vs. a team that is completely made up of fighter pilots. The fighters and tanks dominate the battle feild. one tank on the enemy side could mean the complete destruction of your team. Because the tanks have almost no bullet fall. So its a fun game over all once you grind for 5 days strait to unlock weapons that give you the slightest chance of victory. But I would not recommend this game to anyone that isn't willing to put money into it. But those people who don't even TRY to level up legitmattly I hate, because you really ruin the game for others. But to those of you who have grinded, and grinded and GRINDED SOME MORE, I respect that. Because despite how bad this game is, you found enjoyment and sunk all the time into it. The thing is though games like H and G aren't worth sinking you money into at all! Games like this update like say every couple of months maybe even years? while games like unturned that make almost no money at all pump out updates almost every day on the dot. So since its free, maybe play it, MAYBE. But once again, unless you are willing to sink alot of time and money into this game, just let it be.

Is it a grindfest? Yes.
Do you get blown up by tanks every 5 minutes? Yes.
Do people like to snipe your ♥♥♥ while you're riding your sexy bicycle? Absolutely!
BUT Heroes & Generals does bring a lot of fun and enjoyment, especially if you are willing to invest a bit of time into the game and also if you are ready to tactically approach every single encounter - once that is achieved, the game does award you handsomely for it. It's more of an MMOFPS than anything else, so if you want to immerse yourself into a WWII-themed World of Warcraft, you should definitely try this out!

3/10 Why? its fun...If you pay to win that is. If not, well you will have a terrible time. If you play skirmish, you will be sniped, blownup, or gunned down by tanks or snipers across the map. Not to mention all of the hackers.

If you do buy a sniper, be aware that the unlocks for it will not be available until you reach rank 9 and go recon. There is nothing on the weapon info that says that.

Also since not all the sounds register for some odd ♥♥♥ reason, if youre being shot, your only hint is where you were shot from. Unless its a sniper or a tank. Than youre probably dead as those two classes are completely over powered. You cant hear your teammates shot and you can only hear every 5th bullet if youre being shot at by an enemy.

I mean lets face it. Things are too vague, theres not enough information on weapons. For example: i bought a sniper. No where did it say i had to unlock it normally to be able to upgrade it. I email support, they say "you buy it to have early access to it." If i would of known i had to unlock it first, I never would of bought it. Descriptions are too vague and theres not enough information.

Heres the exact email:
Hello Deadly,

Upgrades for scoped rifles can only be purchased and equipped by Recon characters.
The information in the ribbon progression overview for the Sniper Assault ribbon is incomplete in this respect: your Rifleman *does unlock* the weapon upgrades, but he *can't buy/equip them* until he changes careers to becomes a Recon.

The scoped rifle is still a very powerful weapon even without modifications.
Riflemen can only unlock scoped rifles very far down the BA Ribbon progression tree.
What you purchased with Gold is the possibility to unlock this weapon early.

See you soon on the battlefield!

Best regards,
Heroes & Generals Support Center

Gameplay 0/10 Pay to win's everywhere. For a staged war, it says its "Balanced". Its not, either Germany's over powered with tanks, or the US is over powered with tanks. Since russias the new faction, they have the worst amount of stuff.

Leveling system: 1/10 Too slow and so much grinding. Example: went 22/12 and half of my kills were headshots with a bolt action. how much xp did I get for the match? 42 xp when i need about 50k for the next rank. Also my deaths were from tanks, hackers that have no-recoil, and snipers.

Vehicals: 3/10 What are physics? When you go off a jump at a highish speed on a motorcycle, you do flips, spins, and very rarely you will land on 2 wheels w/o that stuff. Also, you can flip tanks on pebbles, you tap a rock with a jeep or a motorcycle, it explodes, Tanks sniping players across the map.

Weapons: 3/10 Clunky. You know the feeling. They feel heavy and a pain to carry around.

Until they fix it, i give it a 3/10. I think im being generous.

I have been playing this game nopw off and on since release. The concept is awesome . The actual play is garbage, connection is intermitent at best. The game balancing is horrible, I don't think the developers have any clue as to what balance means to be honest. They make the game Free to play ( pay to win) and cannot even provide functioning purchases in game. I bought a simple jeep upgrade to allow me to have some way of dealing with a tank ( infantry vs tank with no anti tank mine = your dead likely). This anti tank supply crate which you have to buy with in game currency took my money at purchase but when I go into mission low and behold... my supplies I bought are not on the jeep and I am staren at a tank rapen my team..... Rampant cheating, sniping tanks, laggy as all hell on good days( pretty sure they do not even have a North American server.) So ....total inability to provide proper purchasing. 1/10 and that being generous.

Great game, really is a grindfest as after more than 2000 hours there are still things for me to grind for. Of course as a paying player I could have skipped allot of the grind, Doesn't feel Pay to win as I'm competative without spending money. Don't normally write reviews but seeing the multiple thumbs down felt it was worth shouting out and saying yeah it's great. It's feels allot like DOD in FPS side except there are tanks/jeeps/motorcycles/tank and planes, has massive maps and a great RTS side that you can only access by grinding or paying, As an expirenced player I feel you can have a FPS character on a level playing feild in about 1-2 hours. However it does help to have many characters set up differently so you don't have to try and jack of all trades. If you do play this game and enjoy the crece (lvl 0-3) but then hit a wall try and find a clan as this game benifits from squading up with voice chat immeasurably

It really shouldn't be early access anymore. It's just an excuse at this point. Important items such as a wrench to repair your vehicle are locked behind an extreme pay wall which of course you can bypass entirely by paying real money. Physics is like a bar of soap and will flip out everwhere. If you're infantry prepare to get sniped and nothing but sniped. ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game. Avoid at all costs. Do not reccomend.

Edit: Me and a friend both got banned for writing negative reviews.

this game is absolutely amazing! I have had an extremely good time with this game fighting for germany(for ze Führer) every minute I've played has been a joy. It's about time we got to play a WW2 game that doesn't have one sided battles! The combat is tactical and you WILL go down in seconds. there's nothing like shooting down on a field of enemy soldiers while taking heavy fire from the enemy tanks and planes. Unfortunately, there is a graphics option glitch that is screwing me over :( when I go into advanced graphics settings, I turn everything to low(I run the game at 30fps at that setting) then click apply, then when I check again later the graphics settings(the one im talking about is the object quality) goes back to medium. This litterally screws me over frame rate wise, that fps drops to 12 sometimes >:O I still recommend this game to any shooter fan though :)

SCORE: 8.5/10

Despite the occasional lag from different hosts, this game is actually really fun. Well.. It WAS really fun, until aim bots and wall hacks decided to show their face in almost every single game. Lacking the VAC Security, there's no point to playing anymore.

The team balancing and match making seems a little off, also. Some games we've got 4 more players, some games we've got less. But still playable regardless of this.

There's also a bit of a "Free to play, pay to win." system going on, which is a shame, but i understand they need to turn a profit. It'd be nice if the cash shop was a little more balanced also.

All in all, i'll not be playing this game until they get VAC Secured and deal with the large increase in cheats that have flooded the game the past week and i'd suggest the same to new players.

This game may looks nice it is nice to play too... only for a day. Free to play is a lie this game and its developers are thieves you can't do anything without payin after you reach level 3. You keep dying afterwards without paying you can't unlock anything less than 1 week. Not really amusing when time passes while you play.
