What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“When we started developing Heroes & Generals it was with the intention of creating a game for the gamers as much as for ourselves. The games we have been creating in the past (back in the IO Interactive days) have all been shrouded in secrecy until they were released and therefore always carried a number of things that players did not like but we were unable to change. Because it is the players that in the end plays the game we think they should have greater influence on the development.

Since the very early days of the project in 2011 (pre-alpha stage), we invited players in to play the game and have involved our community in the making of Heroes & Generals and listened to the feedback from them. So it's a natural extension of the way we develop Heroes & Generals, to also include the Steam Community, by going Early Access.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We're approaching the end of our Open Beta/Early Access phase, but it's still too soon for us to put a date on when we'll launch.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We're still tweaking, fixing bugs and adding new features to Heroes & Generals, and even though we feel that the game is now fun and quite stable, we still wish to get all things 'just right' before we call it 'launched'.

We do not plan to do a full server reset when the game launches.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We're in the end of our Open Beta phase, preparing for launch.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Heroes & Generals is Free2Play. We wish to create a healthy, solid and well-balanced game and community, where you can get a great experience playing the game, no matter how much money you spend! There is already an in-game economy in place, where you earn in-game credits and warfunds for being active in the game, by playing FPS-missions and/or handling Assault Teams.

You can also buy gold, which you can use to buy practically everything, usually it give you the option of buying stuff ‘early’, so you don’t need to grind that much. We also offer a Veteran Membership to accommodate wishes of having an all-inclusive package, where you earn xp, ribbon-xp, in-game credits and warfunds at an increased rate etc.

Prices are regularly being tweaked now in Open Beta/Early Access and we will most likely still tweak prices at and after launch.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We encourage the players to participate in discussions in our forum: http://forum.heroesandgenerals.com/

When you write feedback about the game, remember to try and explain your reasons. Constructive criticism will help us build a better game for you.”

German Blitz on the move with Everhart – Update!

After we showed you the Soviet GAZ-AAA Cargo and the American CCKW Truck, it is time to present you with the German Blitz truck!

The Blitz truck fits 9 soldiers, two supply crates and a driver – enough space for three German standard Infantry Squads on the move to the frontline!
Keep a Recon Auxiliary Seat to scout and warn you about or eliminate all the threats you could meet on the road.

It unlocks at Chauffeur Ribbon Rank 2 and is available for Infantry soldiers. Just like the other two trucks it works as a mobile deploy vehicle, BUT while cheaper to buy and faster to unlock than the halftracks, it is not armored so it requires a bit of skill to place it where it is both useful for teammates, but also a bit protected from enemy fire!

Historical Facts
The name Blitz, which translates to lightning was found in a prize competition and was first used for this truck in 1930.
During the war about 130,0002.5 ton Blitz Trucks were built until 1944 in Brandenburg. On August 6th 1944 the Brandenburger factory was destroyed in an RAF Air Raid, after which the constructed was moved to the Mannheimer rival plant by order of Minister of Armaments Albert Speer.
The construction of different Blitz models continued until 1975.

Tweaks to the Immersion and Gunplay in Everhart

In addition to adding three new infranty trucks to Heroes & Generals the upcoming ‘Everhart – Knights of the Road’ update will also contain a range of tweaks affecting the immersion and gunplay of the game.

To a wide extent the tweaks are more something that you, rather than seeing them on screen, will feel or sense in the game. Stuff that makes pulling the trigger just a bit more satisfying.

Have a look at the primary tweaks below:

Tighter gunplay
The recoil system is now smoother and more predictable. This makes firing the different types of guns feel better and it will be easier for you to compensate for recoil when aiming.
We have also tweaked the bullet timing/precision for both mounted and handheld weapons – this has nothing directly to do with rate of fire, number of bullets or aiming, but is more of a technical question of the precision with which a bullet is fired. What you get out of this is a more natural, immediate and tight feel when firing weapons.
Finally we have reduced the input lag so that the time from when you press the mouse button and the weapon fires is shorter.

Deploy cam greatly improved
The Deploy camera have been given an overhaul to provide a smoother transition giving you a little bit of an overview of what you are getting into when you deploy. This improves the feel of immersion and makes orientation easier – and it simply just look better.

Death cam tweaked
The Death cam has been tweaked too and will now linger for a short moment in first person perspective until changing towards the location of your killer. This again is done to strengthen immersion, but of course you only get to experience it when you play the game in first person mode (and die).

Let’s switch seats
We have put some extra effort into the camera transition when exiting, entering or switching seats in a vehicle to make it look and feel both smoother and more natural.
We wanted to add a sense of climbing out of the vehicle lending physicality to the experience so that you, when you get in to a tank, actually feel that it is the huge clunky beast that it is. There is moment of being vulnerable when exiting and entering a vehicle, you cannot just exit from inside a vehicle, shot and ‘teleport’ back into safety.

Look straight ahead
The camera have been aligned with your enter angle so that the camera now aligns with your character’s point of view when deploying and exiting/entering vehicles. This will not only help you from loosing orientation but also give you a quicker response time when reacting to the dangers around you.

Look at the map
In addition to camera changes the map animation has been tweaked. The map can now easier be consulted in vehicles, you can see the full map when in a plane and we have added the map to some vehicles like the M16 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage, which did not have it before.

Wrench to the face!
The wrench have had its equipment points reduced from two to one point, something we hope all you pilots and tankers out there will utilize to get a bit more interesting loadout. At the same time we are reducing the damage of the wrench from 60 to 35 to balance out the lower cost.

Better footing
We have improved the player model position to make it look more natural when you are crouching or standing on sloped surfaces like a roof. One of those small details that makes the game look better.

All things relative
The mouse input is now relative. This is something that will go unnoticed by most players, but it helps us to detect recoil cheats more effectively.

If you want to know more about the tweaks introduced in the Everhart update, have a look at our latest Devstream below where Reto.Spitlash and Reto.KenSolo talk about and demo the tweaks:

Was very skeptical when I got the game. Girlfriend was away and I wanted to play a WWII game and this was free so...

(Reviewed @ 40 hours)

1) Is it pay to win? Ehhhh kidna...better weapons and upgrades gives a superior advantage....does it ruin the game no I don't think so. It's free personally I bought veteran status just to rank up my Russian character and get a Mosin Nagant rifle (I collect them so it made sense haha). I have this thing all tricked out and I can beat a lot of SMG dudes with my side arm cause a lot of people can't aim in this game...but I did pay...soooo yeah...its up in the air. I hated working on my American character after I got happy with my Russian cause of the grind...

2) Do you have to grind? Yes, but a little grinding doesn't bother me.

3) Graphics...good enough...graphics aren't a huge deal for me though and its free so I'd say sufficient.

4) Sounds...I hate the sound of this game. Any one who has shot a real firearm would be embarassed...but its free.

5) Fun...depends on if your team plays the objectives. I enjoy the game.

Overall...I'd say its a 7/10. I really enjoy it and would play it more if more teamwork oriented games weren't my focus. I just recently in last hour or so of my game time have switched to a diferent game that is more simulation that I am playing a lot more frequent than this, but with that said I plan to play many more hours.

Haven't played this game in about a year since the permaban. Looked at other reviews since then and have not seen a lot of positives being listed, except from people with very little hours played who seem to have glowing and well edited reviews. When you look at the reviews from players with over 500 hours they are all in red, as in they have a great deal of negative things to say. All of them, including me, seem to be frustrated and a lot of them seem to permabanned....

I will offer some advice. If you play this game for more than 40 hours stop for a second and consider what you are doing. You are about to add a significant portion of your time to a game that has been negatively reviewed by a majority of its veteran players and many new players. You are about to continue playing a game that is actively trying to get as much money out of you as possible before you quit and get banned, one developed by people who have continually proven they can make horrible mistakes on a monthly basis.

And as a warning to all, during the future time you put in you will receive temporary bans. Eventually, with enough temporary bans, you will permabanned. I received one temp ban for "flaming the support team". I sent them 3 support tickets in a day, all about different cheaters I encountered, and got a temp ban for it. I got 2 other temp bans for cursing because Reto takes that very seriously and cannot install a word filter into their in-game chat. Got 1 temp ban for crashing a couple planes that belonged to a squad leader(back then you could still join random squads to get in game from main menu and encounter the person who made the squad). AA guns shot my planes to near death and I crashed into them on purpose before my plane spun out and exploded. Thought it was worth destroying the AA guns with a destroyed plane instead of parachuting and dieing or just crashing into the ground. The devs did not agree and gave a temp ban for griefing the squad leader. And the rest were from accidentally bombing people in my plane because back then (Don't know if this is still a thing) the allied players on your team had a marker so you could spot them, but it would vanish when they walked under trees or in buildings. You would have to use the minimap to spot them and that doesnt work too well when you are fighting other aircraft and trying to spot ant-sized targets to bomb. Once you've killed enough players in the span of a few games you get a temp ban.

My last bit of advice is do not put 1000+ hours into this game. I had fun in a lot of situations, met a lot of nice and decent people, but dear god did I meet so many horrible trolls. In the end you will grow tired of the never ending let downs from the updates. And if you try to power through it all, there is still a very good chance you will end up permabanned. There are other games to play. Go play those instead.

In the game's current state, I do not recommend it due to a few reasons.

Con's: It is grindy as all hell. A shooter for one should not be this grindy, for all our progress seems to slow.
Waiting for matches to happen, that time is quite long. Up to a five minute wait time for a match to even start, not counting the minute to load and almost another minute for the game to actually start.

Lack of a tutorial for how your system is laid out and how it works is also a key thing to have.
It feels very unpolished for the almost dozen matches i managed to get into, and playing as a German, were always out numbered and seems out guned at every turn.

Movement issues are also a eye sore for when i go to climb a ladder, i get onto the ladder, and then i just sit there even after hitting E to climb the ladder. Having to get off and back on is a problem in the heat of the moment.

I do give you props for going to the WW2 era, and their is potential if the system is refined more. It is a beta and this is so far my feedback and current review.

Ok, after putting a LOT of time and money into it:

I got perma banned on twitch for asking a simple question, without expressing my honest feeling about the newest "update", which is basically another deep downgrade after "Adams".

So I've still got a year of veterancy around, they treat the people that buy gold to support them like sh!t - because the people are never right and reto can't never ever be wrong.

I've bought the veterancy because I had faith that they won't cluster♥♥♥♥ the game and yet, they can dig even deeper.

Here's a quick overview of the top 5 downgrades:

  1. First Rommel, adding INSANE deployment queues for everyone.

  2. Then they added pooled resources, making 18 tanks vs 18 fighters possible - ohh keeeh... (fyi that's still possible via matchmaker)

  3. Somewhere along the way they screwed up the shaders...

  4. Adams: Adding some weird as hell cone fire - ok maybe, but:
adding autoaim for idiots that cannot guess where a gun will shoot at while hipfiring when all the bullets HAVE TO leave the barrel; that stuff even introduced a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of WTF - Headshot?! "bugs".

  5. And now... Squad 2.whatever:
    Could have been so easy, remove the class restriction on the squads add a "commo rose", so you can mix and command 'em like in Battlefield;
but nope, they had to do it the "right" way again - I'm cutting it short:
    • removed the join friend functionality
    • removed ability to pick a battle (can't even join your own ATs without a squad)
    • making squads is now tied to ribbon progress - which is tied to a single soldier instead of a faction
    • added horrific fun with the matchmaker (wooohooo we need moar ping)

Final verdict: don't expect anything but letdowns all the way; 6 months ago, I'd have recommended the game to everyone, but now... forget it - leave the devs to their own ignorance.

Click "To Battle!"
Wait 30 sec to customize your squad...
Wait another 30 sec to load into the battle...
Wait for 3 team members to fall before you can spawn...
2 minutes later you can finally spawn into the game...
Instantly die after 2 seconds because your spawn is already being camped by enemy tanks and snipers at this point...
Wait again for 3 team members to fall...

You have just experienced the new D-Update... *Slow Clap*

Waiting times have increased dramatically in the D-Update and the game flow has come to a grinding halt. Part of that is due to the squad system which now commonly matches 21 vs 18 players in battles and forces you to wait for 3 team members to fall every time you die...

On top of that you mostly get thrown into matches which were abandoned by their previous players because they are already over or very onesided. The option to choose your own battles is no longer possible if you queue on your own or have no assault teams deployed. You hardly ever get to actually play a match from start to finish. Instead you now have to constantly act as a filler to play the remaining 5 minutes in a lost match that everyone has already given up on.

To crown it all add to the already existing annoying fog and the horrible lighting the new "improved" UI which blocks half your screen with giant A1, B2, C4 markers that cannot be turned off unless you individually aim down the sight while pointing at every single marker...

What the hell happened to this game I used to love...

June 15th "Optimization" Patch:
- FPS decreased again instead of increased (same as the last "optimization" patch)
- Game looks blurry now as if you forgot to wear your glasses
- Constant stutters are back that some users experienced when the D-Update was first released
- Game crashes every 5 minutes

Time to uninstall this piece of garbage and wait for Battlefield 1

  • Free to Play,
  • Working with Steam,
  • No premium weapons, vehicles or things like that,
  • You can set name for your gun, soldier, squad and unit,
  • Game about World War II.

  • Game made on java,
  • There is no such a thing like quick support ticket reply. I'm waiting more than 30 days for reply,
  • Overpowered russian nation, they should rename the game to "Losers & Russians",
  • FULL of cheaters,
  • Really bad performance optimization my PC is acting like foundry furnance,
  • Really sh*tty graphics and sounds,
  • ↑ other players are shooting to me from 250 meters, deep fog, 100 bushes and kills me and can't see them,
  • Players rage after new squad system,
  • FULL of cheaters,
  • Pay 4 Win,
  • ↑ War Battles lobbies are full with lieutenant and majors players with 0 kills and 40 deaths stats because they bought ready soldiers,
  • Lack of any Anti Cheat Software,
  • FULL of cheates,
  • ↑ If you type in google "heroes and generals cheats" first link with cheats software is fully working,
  • Overpowered russians weapons and vehicles just like in world of tanks, war thunder of other games,
  • ↑ PPSh-41 and 71 rounds without sign of recoil,
  • ↑ Russian bullets, tanks and planes mades from Stalinium,
  • Fractions can buy weapons other factions, eg. german soldier can buy american bazooka, and us soldier can buy panzershreck, BUT only russians can buy PTRD-41 Anti Tank Rifle, very logic and smart,
  • Lack of quick in battle cheater report, to report "bad guy" you need to send a ticket to the support and you will wait 7 days till they send you reply, and the best part is they can't even tell you if reported player was really a cheater,
  • ↑ but during the battle you can check stuff like player nemesis, favorite weapon, and others, who cares about that?
  • FULL of cheaters, did I mention that?
  • Only 18vs18 lobbies, even in Battlefield 1942 you could play on 64vs64 servers,
  • Ridiculous damage system concerning infantry, tanks and planes,
  • Unbalanced tanks battles,
  • For being an chauffeur you gain anti tank badges but not for destroying enemy tanks,
  • Overpowered badges and too easy way to get them,
  • ↑ Panzerkampfwagen V Panther is shooting every 3 seconds + add to this golden tanker badge which allows gunner shoot 20% faster,
  • FULL of cheaters, did I mention that, right?,
  • Suicide ♥♥♥♥♥♥s rushing your tank with bikes or jeeps,
  • Idiotic spawns,
  • ↑ ♥♥♥♥♥♥s are placing AT mines in the places where tanks/apcs spawns,
  • They say you can hack the game with Cheat Engine...
  • and many many more I'm just afraid I will run out of space...

Squad system is broken. I spent an entire map caping and defending a forward point. Spawning allies in my jeep and ratatatting from the gunner seat. Then about 40 seconds before victory, 'YOUR SQUAD LEADER HAS REMOVED YOU FROM THE SQUAD" and my game was over.

That's after waiting 9 minutes for a server.

I enjoy the vehicles and combat. The microtransactions and poorly implimented mechanics are causing me to uninstall.
This game gives you a hint of really fun gameplay, but ruins it with money and frustration.

Played this about a half a year to a year ago. I had great fun. Until the support team completely ♥♥♥♥ed up my experience with this game. I had a friend who had a great round one time. More than 90 kills with a fully upgraded Kar98 and say, 3-5 deaths. At that time the upgrades were pretty OP and the Kar98 was able to drop someone one shot from about 200+m away. Low and behold the server started whining and complaining about him being a hacker. When Me, my friend who got banned, and my whole group knew about this buffed AF Kar98. Somehow the support team heard about it and completely permabanned him. COMPLETELY. With absolutely no evidence other than a few screenshots of the leaderboard and the word of a few whiny babies. Through plenty of effort to try and get the ban lifted it was met with nothing but threats of bans and wipes of our accounts. We WERE all veteran players until this happened. We said ♥♥♥♥ you and completely abandoned this game. The devs only care about the moolah. They just stole our money and kicked us to the curb. Shows how much these guys really care about their community. You can really tell a lot about a company by the way the treat their players.

This game had so much potential but the developers are just digging a deeper hole for it. It all started with the nerf on the German faction simply because that's where the good players were. The grinding aspect of the game is also annoying as hell, not to mention the matchmaking component pits all playing styles and abilities in one giant cluster ♥♥♥♥. I used to enjoy it. Quite honestly. And often, I find myself trying to go back, but it's just gone way too far downhill for any hope of salvaging. Not to mention there is a well-balanced mix of trolls, deadweight noobs, and super-pro rage-mode tryhards. And the one class that needs to get rebalanced is recon. A recon and a sniper are two different types. Recons use equipment to help relay what the enemy is doing. Snipers kill people. This game has molded the two together so that recons drive around in gun motor carriages and can one-shot your leg from across the map without you seeing where they are. Really disappointing turnout of a promising game.

Reto-Moto, the developer behind this game, simply are not game developers.

As in, they do not understand the most basic, mandatory elements of multiplayer game design.

They allow entire clans, and teams consisting of MULTIPLE clans, as well as other premade groups of skilled players, to be matched up against completely new players with unmodded starter weapons and no experience or skill.

As a result, NOT A SINGLE MATCH of the action game (the FPS part of this game) is EVER decided by skill.

It's ALWAYS decided by whichever side has premade teams or more high ranking, experienced, decked out players.

I know this sounds like a rant, but my hundreds of hours speak for themselves.
I myself have no trouble against experienced, decked out players, because I am one.
However, I play solo queue, without a clan or premade team, so I always end up in a team consisting almost entirely out of newbies and inexperienced players, while the opposing team consistently has premades from clans or at least 1/3 of the team full of veterans.

This is not fair. This is not balanced. This is objectively wrong game design.

Every single game developer over the past decade has understood this simple issue and does not allow premade teams in team based multiplayer games to be matched against solo queue players.

...except Reto-Moto.

Combine that with the M1/M2 and MG42 -- impossible fantasy weapons that make the game play like Unreal Tournament, while everyone else plays a tactical WWII FPS -- and you get a game so blatantly badly designed that not a single match is ever decided by skill, nor is balanced in any way whatsoever.

Stay away. There's a reason this game has been in Early Access for so long.

The developers have absolutely no idea what they're doing.
They don't have a single actual game designer on their team.
If you view their livestreams, you'll know that their entire development team consists of production specialists (3D modeling specialists, animators, texture artists, map builders, etc.).

They have no idea about the mandatory axioms of game design that every developer worth anything has been implementing in games for over a decade now.

Dear Devolpers,
Here is how to drastically improve your game
-Give us the ability to use mics to communicate, at least in squads
-Stop making it so hard to rank up
-Reduce lag across all servers, because its beggining to be a problem
-Stop making spawning in so long

Reto breaks the game more and more. The updates destroy the game. It used to be a great game, now it is a joke of a game. Bugs, broken matchmaker, divided community, scopes everywhere, broken guns, graphics are not as good anymore, list goes on. This game was great, but they destroyed it by doing the opposite of what the community ask for.
