What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“When we started developing Heroes & Generals it was with the intention of creating a game for the gamers as much as for ourselves. The games we have been creating in the past (back in the IO Interactive days) have all been shrouded in secrecy until they were released and therefore always carried a number of things that players did not like but we were unable to change. Because it is the players that in the end plays the game we think they should have greater influence on the development.

Since the very early days of the project in 2011 (pre-alpha stage), we invited players in to play the game and have involved our community in the making of Heroes & Generals and listened to the feedback from them. So it's a natural extension of the way we develop Heroes & Generals, to also include the Steam Community, by going Early Access.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We're approaching the end of our Open Beta/Early Access phase, but it's still too soon for us to put a date on when we'll launch.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We're still tweaking, fixing bugs and adding new features to Heroes & Generals, and even though we feel that the game is now fun and quite stable, we still wish to get all things 'just right' before we call it 'launched'.

We do not plan to do a full server reset when the game launches.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We're in the end of our Open Beta phase, preparing for launch.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Heroes & Generals is Free2Play. We wish to create a healthy, solid and well-balanced game and community, where you can get a great experience playing the game, no matter how much money you spend! There is already an in-game economy in place, where you earn in-game credits and warfunds for being active in the game, by playing FPS-missions and/or handling Assault Teams.

You can also buy gold, which you can use to buy practically everything, usually it give you the option of buying stuff ‘early’, so you don’t need to grind that much. We also offer a Veteran Membership to accommodate wishes of having an all-inclusive package, where you earn xp, ribbon-xp, in-game credits and warfunds at an increased rate etc.

Prices are regularly being tweaked now in Open Beta/Early Access and we will most likely still tweak prices at and after launch.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We encourage the players to participate in discussions in our forum: http://forum.heroesandgenerals.com/

When you write feedback about the game, remember to try and explain your reasons. Constructive criticism will help us build a better game for you.”

Veterans Day - Veteran Membership

Today November 11th is 'Veterans Day' in the US, 'Remembrance Day' in the British Commonwealth and 'Armistice Day' in France, Belgium and other countries. This day marks the end of the first World War in Western Europe when the armistice took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning — the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918.

And while this day is not observed in Denmark (we were neutral in the First World War), we thought it would be fitting time to give all players from the greenest recruit to the most grizzled veterans a Free 24-hour Veteran Membership.

NB: If you already have an active Veteran Membership, additional 24 hours will be added.

I was wondering why I had barely heard of anyone playing this game, or why nobody ever talked about it; it's pretty apparent why now though. It's a wallet warrior's dream, but for those looking for an actual game, look elsewhere.

So I thought this game was really fun at first, gave it a good review and was really enjoying the gameplay. As you get further in, however, the game really begins to lose it's fun, and fast.

You start to see how screwed the ingame economy is. For example, in order to counter enemy tanks, you're going to need the Panzerschreck, which is 35000 silver. That's not bad, if you're a decent teamplayer you get roughly 3000-4000 per match. But when you use it, you're spending thousands to restock it's ammo. Which, if you need to use it a lot in a particular match, often leaves you with a negative balance of silver. In a single match I had to spend over 5000 to replenish it.

Same goes for vehicles, you're going to be spending thousands per match repairing and restocking your vehicles to the point where your meager amounts of silver per match won't cover it, and you'll slowy dwindle your resources until you're forced to use stock gear again. Leaving you ♥♥♥♥ed if the enemy team has a lot of vehicles.

Ontop of that, past the beginner weapons you're going to be expected to spend absurd amounts on new weapons (an MP40 costs 127,000) and that's ontop of grinding ribbons for them to be unlocked, and saving up silver without losing it all from repairs and ammo.

Tired of recieving negative amounts of credits? Want to unlock new weapons and vehicles? Shekel up goyim, and you can have everything instantly :^) you won't even have to level up, paying does that for you!

edit: looks like even the devs acknowledge this. Check out the ultimate packs and the description for them on Steam.
"This pack enables you to get the full Heroes & Generals experience, where you can play all roles as Heroes on the battlefields AND command Assault Teams as a General without first having to spend hours, weeks and even months of playtime to progress your characters and unlock weapons, equipment and vehicles."
They're TELLING US to forget about playing, just fork out money to get the 'full experience', as if having to play is a chore. Shouldn't the entire game be fun, not just when you fork out $110 or spend months grinding? What ever happened to putting time into a game because it's enjoyable? Not because you 'have to' to have fun...

Fun game, but in my opinion, only up until rank 3...Before rank three, it puts you into games of 'skirmish' maps, perfect for 10 v 10. Then it FORCES you into maps with people that have more skill, better weapons, etc. Not only does it do that, but the maps it forces you into only has a limit of 20 players playing at once, which is still 10 v 10...on maps that are big enough for hundreds...HUNDREDS of players. Don't let the term 'MMOFPS' fool you...it's match based. This makes 'battle lines' almost non existant due to lack of troops. Seriously, 80 percent of the time I was killed, it was from behind during those maps, because it is SO easy to just walk around the objectives, and due to the size and amount of various types of foliage and terain in the way, no one would ever see you. Ever. Which makes snipers practically dominate...Oh, another thing...the bullet drop and speed of this game is...it's...it's just dumb. Not even 100 yards out and it just drops so hard, or the target moved out of the way because you know...apparently, you are playing with nerf darts in this game, that's how slow bullets travel.

Another thing is...If you are rank three and don't want to pay them money...you're going to get murdered by tanks and planes...a lot...because all you have is a rifle...which does nothing to them. So you have to grind out match after match of either losing, or getting destroyed and barely winning.

So yeah, if you play it, have fun from ranks 1-3 against evenly matched teams on maps that support 20 people and have 20 people.

The most frustrating game I have played in a while.

I am really interested in Heroes & Generals. I love the concept as well as the throw back to old WWII shooters like call of duty and battlefield 1942. There are forever a few major flaws in the game which I cannot stand.

1. The game progression is way too slow. You are barely rewarded for kills so I tried spending most of my time capturing points. But even with a descent KD ratio and number of caps, I only seem to get 200-300 XP out of a game. Since it takes 6000XP to reach level 4 from 3 and the class I am interested in (paratroopers) requires level 7 the grind is just too long.

2. The action moments are few and far between. This game is a lot of fun when you get on a kill streak and you are working as a team. But I spend most of my time respawning, running between shortness of breaths and getting killed almost as soon as I get in the fight. Taking a jeep only makes you a bigger target from what I've experienced.

3. Unbalanced. You cannot have fun when you are up against tanks, snipers, and dive bombers when all you have is an M1.

4. Unintuitive. There are a lot of things that don't make sense. For example why can't you switch loadouts between deaths? If the loadout isn't working in a certain scenario i.e. against tanks, why can't I change my loadout or character?

5. Clunky movement. The movement is not meant to be crisp like bf4 or cod, I get it. But I think ithe responsiveness is excessively slow. slowing down, jumping, even running into a doorway is difficult in this game.

6. Money. Just like the latest episode of South Park on fremium games: this game is barely fun unless you sink money into it to get the good weapons and classes.

The game is still in beta and I hope some of these issues will be addressed. But as it stands now, I find the game rather unenjoyable. Which is a shame because I love the concept.

This game has some decent foundations, but you'll quickly realize it's just a clunky pay-to-win mess. Some of the mechanics are okay, some aren't; shooting is decent, hit detection is atrocious, and the sheer number of hits some people can survive is bizarre. Are people paying real money for armour that lets them become bullet tanks? I hate this game.

Red Orchestra 2 is better in just about every way; better shooting mechanics, hit detection, graphics, ambiance, gritty warzone feeling, spawning, capturing, everything. Red Orchestra 2 is the game to play if you're looking for WW2 combat. Everything you do in that game is a struggle for control of the battlefield and every kill, suppressing fire, and advance is satisfying and helpful for the entire team. Heroes and Generals completely fails to have that in-depth feel.

Strangely enough, I was excited that this game would be MMO and you could traverse the Western Front and choose where to battle, but you can't, it's not an MMO, it's just done in map instances. Even Red Orchestra 2 has more players per match. Way more. Play Red Orchestra 2 instead of this, you won't be let down.

Oh and, Heroes and Generals is pay-to-win. Enough said.

The whole game is designed to present you with the choice to grind for days to fully customize a single weapon or pay for it through microtransactions. Game also has a killcam that reveals your killer. Putting this one down and not coming back.

Would not recommend to anyone.

I have nothing but praise for this game. For a beta game it is FANTASTIC. Far above COD and the Battlefield franchise in my opinion. The game is very immersive and intense at times. The game does have some issues, but what Beta game doesn't? If you're looking for some negatives, the hit detection is not always spot on (this has become very rare), sometimes you will be completely outnumbered, which isn't the developer't fault, it is the generals'. As any game, it has things that you will love and you will hate. Overall, this is probably the best FPS I have ever played. I rank it right up in my books with COD 4.

People keep calling this game a "Pay to Win" game. It is not. You can purchase anything from weapons to tanks, and with the tanks, sure, you can pay to get a better tank. But as far as an form of ground troop, the weapon only means so much. It would be the equivalent of you being able to buy the highest level assault rifle in Call of Duty. It really comes down to skill, as the rifle is not going to make that much of a difference to be game changing. I would NOT call this game "Pay to Win", if anything I would call it "Pay to Avoid Grinding".

Misleading title. Rename the game to "Scrubs with snipers"

Every single game you'll join will have 1 or 2 blatant hackers, and 60% of the players on both teams, will be bunkered down in the forest, a stick so far up their collective ♥♥♥ that they've apparently impaled themselves on the ground and become immobile. There's no squad system, nor any rewards for playing as a team, so no insentive to do so.

The general idea behind the game is good, but that's not we're here to talk about. The game performs terribly on many systems and have recieved little to no love with regards to optimization, which is a fatal flaw in any FPS. It is horribly balanced against teamplay, and the general power of the long ranged weaponry and tanks, makes it so that there's very few, if only to avoid saying two, viable ways to play this game. Camping with a sniper rifle - stick up the ♥♥♥ in the forest, or camp with a Submachine/LMG inside any given building - stick, still well up the ♥♥♥... But inside a building. The issue lies in the reward system, that is skewed towards promoting defensive play styles, and the complete lack of reasons not to do so. The easiest way to rack up points, is simply to stay on your respective points, killing people as they try to grab it, or alternatively, snipe at the enemy as they spawn, as you are comparatively, massively rewarded for landing a hit frem a distance of around 200 meters.

At it's current build, I see no reason to play this over any other shooter, except for the fact that it's free, and it's somewhat interesting due to the character progression, though even that quickly gets boring when constantly faced off against the native tribe of angry-stick-up-the-♥♥♥-men who roam the forests of Heroes and Generals. And in the end you're faced with the unavoidable choice of being repeatedly shot in the head from a mile away by stick men, or getting your own stick, implating it with surgical precision in your ♥♥♥♥♥♥, and planting your self on the ground, hoping to set down roots, and one day become the king of all stickmen.

Signed up, put some money into it to buy tanks. Server comes down for maintenance, go to log back in, queue for a match, get logged out to read iv been banned. No help or word from their support team. Gameplay itself is fun and i personally like it and recommend people try it. However i cannot in good conscience recommend spending any form of money on this game, especially if you can get banned without so much as a peep as to why. That aside it is fun for what it is and i'm still playing on a second account, but i wont be putting in any money again and i advise others not too either.

Fun an interesting but seems to be a very pay to win kind of game. I don't want to spend 100+ hours of playing to unlock a weapon that I dont even know if I like. Gamplay is smooth and fun until you level up once or twice then you meet all the people who have spent their life savings on this thing.
