What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“When we started developing Heroes & Generals it was with the intention of creating a game for the gamers as much as for ourselves. The games we have been creating in the past (back in the IO Interactive days) have all been shrouded in secrecy until they were released and therefore always carried a number of things that players did not like but we were unable to change. Because it is the players that in the end plays the game we think they should have greater influence on the development.

Since the very early days of the project in 2011 (pre-alpha stage), we invited players in to play the game and have involved our community in the making of Heroes & Generals and listened to the feedback from them. So it's a natural extension of the way we develop Heroes & Generals, to also include the Steam Community, by going Early Access.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We're approaching the end of our Open Beta/Early Access phase, but it's still too soon for us to put a date on when we'll launch.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We're still tweaking, fixing bugs and adding new features to Heroes & Generals, and even though we feel that the game is now fun and quite stable, we still wish to get all things 'just right' before we call it 'launched'.

We do not plan to do a full server reset when the game launches.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We're in the end of our Open Beta phase, preparing for launch.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Heroes & Generals is Free2Play. We wish to create a healthy, solid and well-balanced game and community, where you can get a great experience playing the game, no matter how much money you spend! There is already an in-game economy in place, where you earn in-game credits and warfunds for being active in the game, by playing FPS-missions and/or handling Assault Teams.

You can also buy gold, which you can use to buy practically everything, usually it give you the option of buying stuff ‘early’, so you don’t need to grind that much. We also offer a Veteran Membership to accommodate wishes of having an all-inclusive package, where you earn xp, ribbon-xp, in-game credits and warfunds at an increased rate etc.

Prices are regularly being tweaked now in Open Beta/Early Access and we will most likely still tweak prices at and after launch.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We encourage the players to participate in discussions in our forum: http://forum.heroesandgenerals.com/

When you write feedback about the game, remember to try and explain your reasons. Constructive criticism will help us build a better game for you.”

PPS-43 – New Soviet SMG coming with Young Update

In the coming update named Young (after US brigadier-general Gordon Russell Young) we’re adding a brand-new weapon to the game. The much requested Soviet submachinegun the PPS-43 or as it is known in Russian the ППС – “Пистолет-пулемёт Судаева” (Pistolet-pulemyot Sudaeva) which translates as Sudaeva’s submachinegun.

The Soviet PPS-43 unlocks on the SMG Assault Ribbon at Rank 11 as the THIRD Soviet SMG. It is a compact and light SMG with good handling and range.

In the factory configuration it has a rate of fire of 553 rpm and a reload time of 3.0 seconds. Upgrades are available once you unlock them by progressing on the “PPS-43 Specialist Ribbon”. The magazine holds 35 rounds.

Click here for the full resolution versions of the images above: Factory, Anodized Black, Army Paint, Camouflage A.

Compared to the other Soviet SMGs this is handles more like the German MP40 and the American Thompson with comparable damage at range and ease of use.

Alongside the PPS-43 we’are also doing a few other smaller tweaks to existing weapons.
M3 Grease Gun
  • Slight increase to Rate of Fire as it underperformed
  • Close Range Damage increased
  • Muzzle velocity increased to ~285 m/s
M1 Garand
  • Less imprecision from firing, making precise followup shots closer to the other Semi-Auto rifles
Thompson M1A1
  • Muzzle velocity increased to ~285 m/s

Heroes & Generals is a game I came to love and hate but in the end I hated it.

The game itself harps on teamwork but doesn't allow a major system of teamwork, it doesn't allow you to unlock weapons, you have to purchase them and break bone working for credits. People say it's not pay to win and they are right, it's pay to win or lose. You're paying for cosmetics because if you get stingy and purchase a Tiger tank or Pershing, everytime you battle you are now put into the heavy tank battles meaning get ready for a fire-fight. I have seen Tiger tanks alone in battles but that is an extreme rarety. This game should allow all divisions in a single battle not tier systems like MOH, that game had tier systems because it was based on special operations not a full blown WW2 skirmish FPS game. The game should allow all units, heavy tanks included to participate in battles do not narrow them down to Heavy Tanks vs Heavy Tanks, if someone wanted that they would just play World of Tanks.

This is great in theory but what was even the point in purchasing a tank with real cash if I'm just put into a seperate tier to get my tail handed to me? You're being lured to purchase nearly every item in the game and unlike Call of Duty: World at War which does allow tanks in some of their MP Maps, you have to purchase these weapons you can't just unlock them with rank. The game doesn't do itself any credit by making nearly every item in the game cost money, everything from guns, tanks, planes, even ammo & personal gun upgrades/new bullets cost credits.

I made myself a veteran for 30 days but honestly I'm not seeing much of a difference, you hammer in this game to earn promotions but what does that even give you? Nothing. You earn promotions but have to buy all the weapons with the cash you earn.. Instead of doing what most COD/MOH games would do and allow you new weapons when you rank up, you are forced to spend the credits you have earned on weapons that may even be useless in some situations.

The MP40 Sub-Machine gun costs around 75,000 credits, however in long distance fights it's useless, a Tiger tank costs 290,000 credits which would take months to earn. Ammo is around $500 coins when it runs out, tank repairs = 18,000 credits.. This game literally has a bait of rare items on a fishing pole and the gamers are the fish it's trying to nab. The company is the fisherman and we are the stupid trout who fall right into their hands.

The game does itself credit by making the game fun and interactive but there is no real point in playing, you may earn a special rank such as pilot but you'll be thrown into a dogfight with other pilots who may or may not have better experience.

I would much rather pay $30 for a real game then be forced to stare at in app purchases on every single item. True you don't have to spend any real money but again, what's the point? The game doesn't have trading cards and there are no achievements so really, what is the point?

I wanted to vote yes but this game is just to glitchy and un-rewarding to truly say yes. Maybe if they changed their way of rewarding the player by offering free versions of the weapon as you get promoted in each nation that would be more interesting, but being forced to basically repair, re-ammo, restock, rebuy, re-upgrade and re-annoy me with micro-transactions everywhere is just uncanny.

There are times when you are hopelessly being attacked by hackers and the team has tried to manage this but I believe they need to have a system that checks all outside programs asides steam and this game.

The developers made a great game but the glory was ruined by the greed.. Again I'd much rather pay $30 to have a system like COD/MOH where you can unlock all guns as you rank up then one forcing me to cough up my hard earned coins. I would like to use the coins to buy skins for my gun or maybe my character, and maybe a few other things cosmetic but asides that I can't support a company that does this.

I'm sorry to anyone who disagrees with my review but this is just my personal viewing of the game itself.

The idea and potential of this game are huge. The followthrough and direction it is going in are laughable.

For a game that's been in 'beta' now for YEARS, updates tend to give players new skins and small tweaks to maps like moving trees around. Over the coarse of the last year, only 1 new map has been released; this still puts this 4+ year BETA with less maps than BF1942 had as a free DEMO. Updates are roughly 2+ months apart and offer very little updating to content, depth, polish or gameplay but rather stupid broken mechanics or skins/camo.

The overall war mechanic is completely useless and boring. The combat is on the same 4-5 maps over and over and over and over. It doesn't matter if you're defending Berlin or fighting in some unnamed village - its the same map. Win the war? Who cares. A new one loads right after, everything goes back to as before, no bonuses or anything for winners/losers and its the same war with the same maps again and again and again.

At the rate this game is 'releasing' and the fact that the often incompetant development team is focused on adding in fluff and small mechanics to make this a P2W (or at least, pay to not grind endlessly) instead of actual content shows that the state this game is in currently will be what it looks like 1-2 years from now, with a few minor things added in/changed/patched/broken and then removed altogether again.

I'm looking forward to the next 'update' because I may get a scope for my shovel, some camo for my bicycle seat, ammunition that isn't an upgrade to anything and having a house on the airfrield map painted a diffferent color.

In short, this development team is dild@s.

AVOID THIS GAME AT ALL COSTS! What 4 years in Beta? Reto devs are only interested in providing bling for eager noob wallets. Germany has the most players and the best Vet to Noob ratio, therefore win 90% of wars. Most noobs join US team and brutally waste Assault Team resources of team USA's generals. Team USA has maybe 1/3 of the players as Germany, but THE WORST Vet to Noob ratio. Soviets have a better Vet to Noob ratio than Team USA, but are crippled by dismal player numbers. The devs have no interest in balancing the game out. In fact, I think they are trying to rewrite history by having the Germans win every war. Devs sit around drinking beer during their video updates. This is not a serious company. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
