What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“When we started developing Heroes & Generals it was with the intention of creating a game for the gamers as much as for ourselves. The games we have been creating in the past (back in the IO Interactive days) have all been shrouded in secrecy until they were released and therefore always carried a number of things that players did not like but we were unable to change. Because it is the players that in the end plays the game we think they should have greater influence on the development.

Since the very early days of the project in 2011 (pre-alpha stage), we invited players in to play the game and have involved our community in the making of Heroes & Generals and listened to the feedback from them. So it's a natural extension of the way we develop Heroes & Generals, to also include the Steam Community, by going Early Access.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We're approaching the end of our Open Beta/Early Access phase, but it's still too soon for us to put a date on when we'll launch.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We're still tweaking, fixing bugs and adding new features to Heroes & Generals, and even though we feel that the game is now fun and quite stable, we still wish to get all things 'just right' before we call it 'launched'.

We do not plan to do a full server reset when the game launches.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We're in the end of our Open Beta phase, preparing for launch.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Heroes & Generals is Free2Play. We wish to create a healthy, solid and well-balanced game and community, where you can get a great experience playing the game, no matter how much money you spend! There is already an in-game economy in place, where you earn in-game credits and warfunds for being active in the game, by playing FPS-missions and/or handling Assault Teams.

You can also buy gold, which you can use to buy practically everything, usually it give you the option of buying stuff ‘early’, so you don’t need to grind that much. We also offer a Veteran Membership to accommodate wishes of having an all-inclusive package, where you earn xp, ribbon-xp, in-game credits and warfunds at an increased rate etc.

Prices are regularly being tweaked now in Open Beta/Early Access and we will most likely still tweak prices at and after launch.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We encourage the players to participate in discussions in our forum: http://forum.heroesandgenerals.com/

When you write feedback about the game, remember to try and explain your reasons. Constructive criticism will help us build a better game for you.”

Weapon and ribbon tweaks coming with Adams update

Infantry! Infantry everywhere! After showing you the new M16 MGMC, the GAZ-AAA and the SdKfz 7/1, there are also a handful of other tweaks incoming for the infantry! In the coming update named Adams (after the American hero Lucian Adams) a number of tweaks and adjustments will enhance infantry gameplay.

We have been digging through the stats for a while, listened (and read) a lot of feedback & talked to a number of players, and we have decided on a few tweaks to help improve the feel of the gunplay in the game. Most notably we are adjusting a number of values around the semi-auto rifles (the Gewehr 43, M1 Garand & Tokarev SVT-40) to make them more valuable as weapons for both new players and veterans.

Semi-Auto Rifle adjustments
The main changes to the way semi-auto rifles are used are that progress on the Specialist ribbons now move 25% faster, so when the Adams update hits the servers you will progress faster. We have also lowered the price on the boosters for these rifles. These two changes makes it easier for new players to progress on the weapon and unlock their first weapon upgrades for them. For the more experienced veteran players a few tweaks also helps make the semi-auto rifles an even stronger option for fighting on the medium range. We have decreased the ‘negative’ effects on the SA-rifle upgrades by about 30% and we have added a new upgrade – the “Scout II-s barrel” for SA-rifles that produces more range with a slight hit on stability. This upgrade helps make the SA-rifles a bit better at range and helps reduce the gap between semi-auto and bolt-action rifles.

For all rifles we are modifying the values on some of the rifle ammo upgrades by increasing the range of high-damage rifle ammo Bertie clay, S.m.K.Hart, and Heavy D a bit.

Ribbon Boosters
In addition to the changes to the Semi-Auto rifles we have also tweaked how the ribbon boosters work. So apart from lowering the price of the SA-rifle specialist ribbon booster, we have also lowered price of the entry level tank specialist boosters to help beginning tankers get rolling a bit faster. AND we have overall lowered gold prices on most boosters (except Driver & Chauffeur) by approximately 25% WHILE also raising the boost-% to 75% from 50%.

Submachine Guns
In addition to the above-mentioned changes to the SA-rifles we are also tweaking the SMGs a little. The balancing tweaks consists mainly of slightly reducing their effectiveness at range and ONLY at range. This helps reduce the SMG-sniping that we have received a lot of complaints about and focus the SMGs on their core use as close quarters weapons. This is done by changing the ranges for damage fall-off and by making precision/stability a lot more dependent on rate of fire.

To help ease new players into the game and not let them immediately drown in a rain of grenades, we have removed hand grenades from the default loadout of infantry soldiers and moved them to be the first unlock on the Infantry Assault Ribbon at ribbon rank 3. In addition we have moved first SMG unlock to infantry assault level 4 (from 5) and moved bolt-action rifle unlocks to infantry assault level 6 (from 2). This was done as previously you unlocked bolt-action rifles and THEN SMGs which added unnecessary difficulties for new players where they bought bolt-action rifles before they had the skills to use them. We have also moved some of the captured AT mines and AT grenades 1 rank down in order to spread the unlocks out.

AND in order to make room for new Mobile AA vehicles we have moved the combat badge unlock “Ironfist Bronze” to chauffeur rank 3, and “silver” to chauffeur rank 7, and moved “Logistics Expert Bronze” and Silver to chauffeur rank 6 and 8 respectively.

Oh and when you are aiming your recently updated, tweaked & upgraded semi-automatic rifle or SMG at the enemy? You might notice they are no longer wearing backpacks. We are working on character models and for now we have removed their backpacks/parachutes as this has been requested by a lot of players. The backpacks (and maybe other packs) will return in a future update when we rework the uniform and character customization.

I've been an active member of the Heroes and Generals Community For more than a year now, I've hosted a teamspeak which has brought in thousands of unique players to play heroes and generals. I Co-Hosted for the Battle Vision Contest to replace westwick. I created the largest english speaking Clan for Soviets Called "Red Star Union." I've been tossed away like used tissue paper. I've been banned on the forums for open critism on the game, and the forums are littered with German Fanboys. On top of that, this is the ban message I recieve(More like a ban threat): http://i.imgur.com/wHP4RIb.png . I don't have any more interest in this game and I am moving on to another game. If they want to treat me like this because I am so openly critical of their game, so be it. I feel like i wasted my last year and half believing in this game, Thinking that they accually listen to the players, but they don't. I don't recommend this game to anyone.

A great game, but has a rough edge that should have been easily taken care of. The pricing of in game items is extremely unbalanced in terms of the amount of time people have to play in order to grab something as simple as a new set of grenades. Even maintaining a weapon and keeping stocked with custom amunition is too expensive. The credits (In game currency) gained per match is also problematic concerning the prices of in game items. Players, with fully modded weapons and excelent characters, need to do extremely well and win in order to not loose credits. Basically, this game requires large sums of time to grind out credits needed to buy some overpriced set of grenades, and to even maintain weapons. That, or the easy way; pour real world money into the game in order to get everything. Even more problems could be listed, but those problems aren't as major as the economy.
Will wait for changes to happen before changing review.

Played it a long time, before it was supported by steam. But I have to say it is ♥♥♥♥.
The idea is fun, and the game has fun parts (I mean, Eichmann on a bicycle, that's hilarious).
But, it's getting worse and worse by every patch.
If you seek a game to relax (and not rip your ♥♥♥♥ (other body parts available) off, leave this page now!

I would pay 59.99 and for it to be a normal ♥♥♥♥ing game. Forget progressing in this game. It tricks you into thinking purchasing a lot of low cost perks like mobile gaming. Before you know it, it cost you way more than 60$ and you STILL had to grind. Don't be a slave to terrible CFOs.

It's "yet another one of those" that's still stuck in the early days of F2P cashmongering. We're back in 2010. The word "Free" means the complete opposite. You'll play this game, and only have access to infantry maps for a short while, and it'll be great. They even give you a free boost that makes the progression feel normal. The first gun unlock is pretty early too! Then you fight tanks. Then your boost ends. Then you count how many games you'd need to win to get the next gun minus all the damn ammo and explosives, and the number's in the 3 digits IF NOT 4. That's when you realize you just COMPLETELY wasted a couple hours.

"Gaming's not always about the money!" That's true, but you shouldn't give your money to thieves either. Businessmen who have spent money to get an education in the art of playing with their customers' brains. In the end, if you want a normal experience, you'll have to pay a lot more than a normal game. That's why it's free to play. That's why the first days are amazing. That's why the hole is so deep.

My first round of this game I fell in love. This is by far my favorite game of all time. I have since uninstalled it, since the business model of "pay a ridiculous amount of money not to grind for the rest of eternity" is awful, and though I might just seem angry, it actually does ruin the whole experience. At least for me personally. If the game, with everything easily or semi-easily unlockable, was purchasable for the price of any AAA title, I'd buy it and play nothing else.
