Patch 3966 is live!

Patch 3966

Patch Summary
Hello one and all! It has been a few months since the last patch so first and foremost thank you for your patience. This patch has some bug fixes that we think most of you will be happy to see squashed… The Steam Achievement now works, you can now fully equip your character with workshop items and no longer have to worry about the dreaded ‘Steam Validation Rejected Error’. Stance Masking is hopefully a thing of the past, there are also few other minor fixes in the patch as well.

So the characters’ faces are now officially exposed in the form of unmasked masks, however they won’t be cheap you’ll need 1000 notes to unlock your favorite characters’ face.

Bots (both) have improvements to their abilities, the training bot is worth checking out (If you feel the bot is still too easy, we recommend you set the training mode to 2 vs 1 for extra chaos), also the dev_bot has some nice updated .cfg files.

Balancing…There are some of you who feel the game is in a good spot in terms of balance and of course a good number of you who feel there is a great deal of room for improvement. Generally this balance patch is focused on making less commonly used attacks more useful. There are one or two experimental things in this balance patch but fear not if things do not work out a balance review patch will not be too far around the corner. We would like to take this opportunity to thank some of the community members for working on the balance scripts and testing the scripts, you’ve been a great help!

Bug Fixes
  • Fixed male vaulting animations.
  • Fixed steam validation rejected error (this should resolve not being able to join a server when too many workshop items are assigned to your character).
  • Fixed the tutorial achievement from not working.
  • Fixed the ‘stance masking/cancelling’ bug.
  • Fixed stance changing while performing air cancels and air attacks.
  • Fixed some security exploits.
  • [Textures] Fixed all Ryoku exponent maps so a bald Ryoku will not have slight colortint on back of head.
  • [Textures] Fixed a spot above Pure’s left ear that was glowing.
  • [Textures] Hidden the seam on Phalanx’s inner arm better for his default and cavalier skins.
  • [Textures] Updated all VGUI mask icons for all characters.
  • Fixed Ryoku’s Heavy Forward T3 so players no longer get stuck in the air (thanks Niky).
  • Cleanup of some old console errors to do with textures and models that were fixed for Source Film Maker, but not for the game.
The following applies to bots spawned via the ‘bot’ console command and the ‘bot training menu’.
  • Bots now have the ability to meditate while waiting for players to join an arena on LAN and dedicated servers (only for bots spawned via the ‘bot’ console command, not via the bot training menu).
  • Bots now have the ability to taunt if they win a round.
  • Bots now have the ability to flourish if they win a match.
  • Bots will now sometimes attempt to grab at close range or attempt to deflect a grab.
  • Bots will now sometimes attempt to throw throw-able weapons at long range.
  • Bots will now try to use their defensive sword techs if their opponent is attacking by default.
  • Bots will now sometimes use jump and jump attacks by default.
The following applies to the ‘dev_bot’ console command and the default bot.cfgs spawned via the ‘exec’ console command.
  • Added bot_random_stance convar, bots now switch stances (bot_stance and bot_force_stance must be set to -1).
  • Improved bot_throw so it is now distance based (the bot will only throw when beyond a certain distance to avoid constant throwing).
  • Improved all old bot configuration files (now when you exec bot_knight or bot_othercharacter names in console it will kick any current bot_devs).
  • Improved all old bot configurations in general so they are now set-up to pose a reasonable challenge to new players.
  • Updated bot_knight.cfg (default uses longsword).
  • Updated bot_phalanx.cfg (default uses rapier).
  • Updated bot_ryoku.cfg (default uses scimitar).
  • Updated bot_pure.cfg (default uses jian).
  • Added bot_vanguard.cfg (default uses katana).

  • All characters now have generic taunt sounds (before only Vanguard had them).

  • Added the Baseline Alpha Longsword.

  • “airdamageX” decreased to “1.15” from “1.5”
  • “forwardAttackDamageX” increased to “0.6” from “0.5”

"... the saving grace of Blade Symphony is that its duels are thoroughly, distinctively, and consistently exhilarating."
PC Gamer

"Blade Symphony is primed and ready to help expand the melee combat genre on the PC."
Capsule Computers

"Blade Symphony looks like Chivalry with elegance."

"When it’s a Dystopia dev’s new otherworldly duelling game, you pay attention. Especially when it’s looking quite so beautiful."

About This Game

Prove you are the world's greatest swordsman in Blade Symphony: a slash-em-up featuring a highly detailed and in-depth sword fighting system. Face down other players in tactical swordplay, 2 versus 2 team duels, sandbox FFA, or the Control Points game mode!

Choose your fighting style

Each of the four characters have a unique fighting style suited to how you want to play.
  • Phalanx, a fencer gladiator hybrid, attacks with long range stabs and a versatile array of side attacks
  • Judgement, a knight crossed with a samurai, uses hard hitting forward attacks and wide strafing attacks
  • Ryoku, a vagrant street ninja, attacks with break dance moves and a signature reverse blade style
  • Pure, an acrobatic wushu style assassin that attacks with flips, cartwheels, extremely mobile
  • Vanguard, a quick-footed champion that uses leaning plunges to push opponents into her blade

Each character has four combat stances and over forty different attacks.

Choose Your Sword

Pair your character up with a sword type to completely change your way of approaching combat.
  • Katana, cause massive damage when parrying your opponents
  • Longsword, a well-balanced, hard hitting and adaptable sword
  • Rapier, a piercing, high damage forward thrusting weapon great for parrying
  • Scimitar, a weapon based on turning and performing as many cuts as possible
  • Jian, an agile, responsive weapon great for combos

Tactical Sword Fighting

There are no unlockable advantages in Blade Symphony. All unlockables are cosmetic. You care about proving your skill and so should your game.

Every attack has openings that are determined in real-time and efficacy is entirely up to you. Did you start an attack too early? Turn away and end the attack in a safe location. Did your opponent stupidly use a lighter stance? Go in and punish him! By switching stances mid-combo you can chain attacks into your own flurry of death.

The fighting system is open for your exploration, you can dash, jump, do an air attack, land, swing sideways with a heavy stance, parry with a light stance, and then roll away.

Every attack flows from your blade in true three dimensional space. As does your opponents! Swords collide in mid-air and you will need good timing and aim to defeat your opponent.

Advanced Character Customization

Customize your character with skins, masks, swords, and multiple attachments streamed directly from Steam Workshop.

Fight as a Team

Play in the new Control Points game mode and participate in team-based sword fighting.

Dead game. There's one server, maybe two where people still play. The achievement doesn't even work.

All of this is a damn shame because this is one of the most interesting and beautiful games in terms of mechanics and aesthetics, form and function, that I have seen in a long time. It is innovative and competitive and calls on reflex, skill, and intelligence. Unfortunately, it has gone unrecognized and unsupported. Maybe the controls are too weird or it took too many steps outside the comfort zone of the average gamer.

I will say that it doesn't feel natural to control this game with a mouse and keyboard; pressing buttons isn't enough. Maybe with better technology and tactile control, this game would work better. I hope that a game like this appears when we have the hardware interface to support it.

If you need to be convinced to buy this game, you won't play it for long. If you buy it instantly after looking at the trailer, you'll probably play it long enough to be satisfied with your purchase.

Tight nit community that will make up for not being a large community if you fit into this niche

Solid combat system. There are some flaws but those won't matter to you unless you're talented enough to understand them. You'll likely be satisfied with the current combat system if you fit into the niche.

Pretty good graphics, especially for a 10 dollar game.

Workshop allows you to add in your own custom sword, mask, and armor designs.

Since this game is built on the source engine you can make your own maps

You can mod in mechanics to an extent

There is almost no chance the community will grow past 30-50 active players. If you like the game and want to experience it with a larger community, that won't be a possibility.

Welcome to Dance Simulator 201x

This is by far the best dancing simulator i've stumbled upon since when I was a child.
The dancers have swords tho, i dont know why , I guess they represent the personal space of each dancer, so you shouldnt get to close or you'll get hurt.

Let's get on with the review, here's pros and cons:

. the music is cool
. there is a sword that is actually a ♥♥♥♥♥ (isnt that cool!!)
. you can't pay-to-win (2 big thumbs-up...thumb-ups...whatever)
. 4
. workshop content for everyone to customize, yayy
. the npcs are well-done and really feel like they're people
. you can measure your e-peen with the useful ranking system

. feel like they put more effort in the musics that in the gameplay
. Lasermaxx keeps changing nickname
. there are a total of 3 max players online at any given moment but hey, small community = better understanding of each other (so why is this a con?)
. if only they removed the swords it would be the best dancing simulator out there
. capes should be only for the best of the bestest, so of course 99% of players have them (guess in which percentage i'm in) // edit: now you can buy capes with in-game currency so the percentage has gone up to 99.9, you can still guess in which category i fall in
. the ranking system is... ok i dont wanna talk about the ranking system

10/10 would play the campaign again! Recommended

The longer you play this game the more you realize how bad it is.

- Dead game pretty much only the same few Russians on at this point.
- No more updates. Devs left the game with unfinished characters, bad movesets, and queues.
- You have to wait years just to play, because devs are too lazy to make matchmaking. Did I mention they shut down the offical servers?
- Game is so unbalanced.
- Running away beats nearly everything.
- Trying to get the game changed will result in you getting circlejerked on and then you get told "You're not good enough to understand."
- They let players balance the game. (They only balance for the highest tier players (themselves))
- Ego Simulator
- All the servers are run by salty Stalins.
- Community is nice if you suck certain people's ♥♥♥♥♥.
- If you state an opinion you will become an outcast.
- People who put input on balance via the forums don't even play the game.

If you really want it get it when it's like 90% off.

Pros (+4):
+ Truly amazing Soundtrack, the music is really great. Theme song is the best.
+ Hardcore old-school gameplay style, Jedi Knight fans would love this.
+ Visuals are beautiful and astonishing. Source engine isn't very demanding.
+ Great character and fighting style diversity.

Cons (-4):
- Gets old very fast without much content to offer.
- Extremely difficult to learn for beginners.
- Repetitive gameplay and game modes.
- Small playerbase, servers are empty most of the time.

I would recommend picking it up during a sale along with the soundtrack, but it's well worth the 10$ price-tag. If you're an old-school Star Wars Jedi Knight fan, you must play this. Otherwise, it's your call. Since there's no neutral vote on Steam, I'll just give it a thumbs up!
