Insurgency update changelist May 26, 2016

We have released an update that includes a new map and numerous features, fixes and improvements. The new map is called Dry Canal, originally created by community member Tribly and a finalist in our Gamebanana level design contest last year.

We are also releasing the foundation for our competitive ranking system. The system is not fully functional yet, but the game now loads the web-based system that will evolve into the competitive component. We can begin to update our competitive and stats systems without requiring a game update.

We know our competitive community are anxiously awaiting the competitive matchmaking features, and we appreciate everyone’s patience. You can expect to see ingame progress in the near future, and if you want a preview of our competitive features, we will be creating a Competitive Testing group on Steam which will give you early access to features before they are introduced to everyone else. We will use this group to test the systems on a smaller base of users and solicit feedback.

In addition to the update to Insurgency, the Day of Infamy mod has also been updated on Workshop. Five new community-made maps have been added to the official map rotation for the mod, and some new content has also been added including a new weapon and new weapon assets. Full changelist found here.

Important note regarding custom player models: Because of animation changes made in this patch, any Workshop custom player models now will cause the game to crash because they do not have the correct IK settings compiled. Please unsubscribe and notify the Workshop creator that their models must be updated.

Full changelist is below:

New Maps

  • Dry Canal (Day and Night versions)
New Scenarios
  • Multiplayer
    • Dry Canal Push
    • Dry Canal Skirmish
    • Dry Canal Occupy
    • Dry Canal Firefight
    • Dry Canal Strike
    • Dry Canal Elimination
    • Dry Canal Ambush
  • Cooperative
    • Contact Checkpoint
    • Dry Canal Checkpoint
    • Dry Canal Conquer
    • Dry Canal Outpost
    • Dry Canal Survival
    • Dry Canal Hunt
  • Implemented facial animations for your guide in the training level.
  • Created Clean Sweep achievements for every map running Hunt game mode.
  • Created Decisive Victory achievements for every map running Checkpoint game mode.
  • New first person AK-74, AKS-74u and Makarov animations.
  • New third person animations for reloads, grenade throws and foregrips.
  • M16, M4 and AK-74 world models have been updated with moving bolts.
  • IK support for third person hands and feet. Mod authors will need to update any player model mods they have on the workshop.
  • Steam View Game Info dialog now shows the player score rather than kill count. Player score can be hidden on the View Game Info dialog if server enables sv_suppress_steam_score.
  • Damage and suppression is replicated to spectators watching in first person.
  • Player spawn staggering implemented to reduce server lag spikes that occurred when a large amount of players spawn at once.
Gameplay Improvements
  • Survival improvements
    • Adjusted price and amount of ammo received from chest rig and chest carrier to make ammo more limited.
    • Tweaked AI behavior so bots are less likely to patrol parts of the map humans can avoid.
    • Added win condition for level 100
  • Players now get correctly damaged and flashed by grenades while leaning around a corner.
  • Fixed the black sky issue when Shader Details were set to medium or low settings.
  • Fixed the subtitles not working in the training level.
  • Fixed the clean sweep hunt achievements not triggering properly.
  • Possessing a bot no longer reloads when using a controller.
  • Fixed being able to crash servers by spamming the inventory_resupply command.
  • Fixed FPS drop caused by main menu HTML panels after connecting to a server.
  • Character models are now positioned with their head where the first person view is in crouched and standing stances, which should help prevent “head glitching”.
  • Fixed multiple world model bipods attaching to a weapon.
  • Fixed detached foregrip on shotgun world models.
  • Added IK support to first person hands on various weapons to prevent any sliding during transitions, specifically pistols.
  • Fixed being able to skip the M249 reloads.
  • Players now experience fall damage when landing in shallow water.
  • SourceTV demos can now be viewed without crashing the client. Demos recorded prior to this patch may fail to load.
  • When viewing a player in first person through SourceTV, proning and leaning is now shown correctly.
  • sv_hud_deathmessages can now be enabled on co-op servers.
Map Changes
  • New District checkpoint layout
  • Fixed an issue in Embassy where you could jump behind the map.
  • Added invisible walls in Panj to prevent players from accessing certain exploit locations.
  • Fixed a bug in Siege Outpost where cache B would be in a bad location.
  • Fixed many other miscellaneous issues in multiple levels.
User Experience Improvements
  • Pressing escape now closes menus properly.
  • HTML MOTDs have been disabled due to player feedback. Unfortunately, too many servers were abusing this ability by playing ads that could not be stopped or were obnoxious.
  • Server-side Workshop now supports collections.
  • Workshop servers will now correctly query for map updates between games.
  • Spawn points and spawn zone entities can now be assigned a squad ID, allowing mappers to create squad specific spawn areas.
  • Theaters:
    • Added mutual exclusion to weapon upgrades. This can be used to exclude any two upgrades from being equipped simultaneously that are in different upgrade slots. Under a weapon upgrade add “excluded_upgrades”, with an arbitrary key and a value set to the name of the upgrade to exclude. The exclusion should be defined on the latter of the pair in the theater file.
    • Added “overlay” setting to gear definitions.
    • Added the “third_person” subsection to weapon definitions.
  • Replaced c_thirdpersonshoulder with sv_thirdperson and all the associated settings.
Capa Mode (beta)

Introducing new features to the roaming spectator mode, currently controlled using Console Variables. The name "Capa" is an homage to one of the greatest war photographers, Robert Capa, who co-founded Magnum Photos following the Second World War. His images of Omaha Beach on D-Day are iconic. Sadly, he was killed by a mine in Indochina in 1954. Capa had a famous saying: "If your photographs aren't good enough, you're not close enough," and this feature will help you get closer to the action while spectating.
  • spec_camera_options_gui 1, displays UI to adjust f-stop, focal length, and focal distance
  • spec_bank 1, enables camera banking
    • spec_bank_angle <-180...180>, Maximum camera banking/roll angle
    • spec_bank_smoothing <0..1>, Banking interpolation amount (higher = slower)
  • spec_handheld <0...n>, enables handheld camera feature that moves the camera around as if it were held by a camera operator
    • spec_handheld_frequency <Hz>, frequency at which the camera shakes (recommended value is 0.3)
  • spec_fov 1, enables manual FOV control while in Capa mode allowing you to zoom in and zoom out using the scroll wheel
    • spec_fov_angle <0.0001...179.0>, manual FOV angle that can be changed using the ConVar or by scrolling

Multiplayer Game Modes:

Push --- Three territorial objectives must be captured by the attacking team in sequential order. For each objective captured, they gain more reinforcement and time to attack the next. Defenders have a finite amount of reinforcements and must use each wisely. Once the third objective is captured by the attackers, a fourth cache objective must be destroyed, while the defenders have only one life to make a last stand.

Firefight --- Three territorial objectives, one for each team, plus one neutral. Each team only respawns when they secure an objective. Secure all objectives or eliminate all enemy to win. Every life counts, making this a very suspenseful experience dependent upon teamwork.

Skirmish --- In addition to three territorial objectives, each team has a supply cache to protect. Teams gain extra reinforcement waves until their cache is destroyed. When both teams have lost their caches and all reinforcement waves, it becomes a Firefight match.

Occupy --- There is one central territorial objective in the area. The team that controls it does not deplete reinforcement waves. This gameplay in this mode is reminiscent to King of the Hill or "tug of war".

Ambush --- A high value target ("HVT") must be escorted to an extraction point. It's one team's goal to make this happen and it's the other team's goal to stop this from happening at all costs. The HVT is only armed with a silenced pistol, but can pick up a weapon from a fallen enemy or teammate.

Strike --- Three weapon caches must be destroyed by the attacking team to achieve victory. Destroying a cache earns the attackers more reinforcements and time on the clock. The defenders must retain at least one cache from being destroyed and eliminate the enemy team once their reinforcements run dry.

Infiltrate --- The standard Capture the Flag mode, but with a twist. Your team's goal is to take the enemy's intel and return it to your base. Your team will only gain reinforcements when someone takes the enemy's intel, or when an enemy stealing your team's intel is neutralized. This mode requires very strong team coordination and strategy.

Flashpoint --- One neutral territorial objective and two caches on each side. The goal is to secure the entire area, controlling the middle and destroying the enemy's caches. Your team respawns when they secure the territorial objective or destroy a cache objective.

Elimination --- In this single life mode, attackers must destroy one of two weapon caches, or eliminate the enemy team within the time limit. Defenders must kill all attackers.

Cooperative Game Modes

Checkpoint --- Complete mission-based objectives in sequence against AI enemy. Each successful objective will respawn anyone who was eliminated along the way.

Hunt --- Insurgents are dispersed in the environment, and your squad must eliminate all targets while locating and destroying the weapons cache. High on tension, with only one-life.

Survival --- Play as Insurgents and fight against endless waves of progressively difficult Security enemies on night themed maps. Reaching safehouse objectives with your team earns you supply to purchase better weapons and spawns any dead teammates.

Outpost --- Defend your supply cache against endless waves of enemy trying to destroy it. Each successfully defended wave will bring in reinforcements of your teammates.

Conquer --- Capture the objectives in the area and defend them from enemy trying to retake them. Destroy enemy weapon caches to thin out their numbers.

absolutely the most fun FPS ever made in my opinion. If you play shooters and don't have this game then that's a mistake. This game is beyond a must have, I regret not buying it earlier. If you're reading this somehow, buy insurgency lol.

Does so many things right that no other game has ever bothered to do right. Every tiny detail adds up to an incredibly immersive shooter that also has fantastic gameplay. Proves you don't need to make a clunky military sim to have a realistic shooter experience.

How this game got such high ratings, I'm amazed. It really makes my word seem like nothing.

This game was pretty fun for the first 5 hours of playing it, as I enjoy realistic FPS's thoroughly and thought it would be a cool to play one set in modern times.

However, this game I HIGHLY do not reccommend.

It's literal design is to make you think "Wow, $15 is pretty cheap. Im gonna buy it." and then you play it for 20 hours or so before you stop playing it permanantely. Is it really worth spending $15 to have 15 hours of fun? Maybe. Depends on your financial situation.

This game is fantastic for squads of friends to play against each other, but usually ends up like this;

Round starts, everybody throws cheap to buy frags across the map and kills over half of each others teams without skill.
Continous ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t ensues, with the players who dont have 200+ hours getting ridicoulously mad at each other and at the other team. One team wins constantly, usually 6 and 0. You rarely will find balanced teams. When teams ARE scrambled, things somehow always find their way back to where they started.

My biggest problem was overall gameplay. Your gun doesn't shoot for some reason, the game saves your previous weapon fire-selection so when you get into close-quarters you shoot one round instead of fully-auto, tons of people have a glitch where they aim straight up and cant fix it until they restart the game (and it comes back), and also how terrorists get amazing equipment, did I mention random calls?

"RELOADING COVER ME" when you're the last guy alive doesn't help you very much.

Look, I know that the game is trying to be fair, but when a terrorist using surplus 1952 grenades from the USSR is BETTER than a united states frag, something isn't right. It seems that terrorists have little to no recoil while the US ♥♥♥♥ing flies everywhere, and in it goes against everything a Kalashnikov stands for.

Once more, if you've read all of this, I congratulate you. You're one of the few to do so.

I may just suck at it to an extremely unrealistic amount, but I've played tons of FPS's (Red Orchestra/Rising Storm, Battlefield(s), CODs, those are what I mostly did/do) and I'm good at them, but this was just ♥♥♥♥ing abysmal.

Only the best players with 200+ hours can thoroughly enjoy this game all around it seems. The rest quit after 20+ hours.

Dont buy it unless you're making $20+ an hour at an easy job and can waste the money

Used to be my favorite game, and still has great gameplay. The only part that I really can't stand is all of the ads that servers run during matches. It just kills the realism and makes it harder for me to have a good time.

Love this game.
It has great weapon customization and mods too go even further.
Way more realistic than COD or CS but not too much, you can really enjoy of the realism!
Not too many players, but you can find a decent server anytime.
And the best thing is that I haven't seen not a single hacker in the game.
Would rate 5/banana.

Insurgency is an, in my opinion, a pretty fantastic military infantry combat game. That's what i expected when i saw it, and that's what i got when i played it. My friends were raving, so i had to try it. (much like cocaine)
jk kids, don't do drugs.
The ratings speak well enough, so if that's all you wanted to know, you can stop right here and just buy it already.
What I liked:
  • Realistic weapons and bullet damage. Just about one round to the body without armor from anything can kill you as it would in real life. One shot to the head from anything will kill you 100% of the time.
  • Squad mechanics. Not that anyone actually uses this function in multiplayer, but if you want to milsim, this helps a lot. Each squad has prescibed classes with class specific equipment for their designated task.
  • Leaning. Expose as little of yourself as possible when clearing corners.
  • Reactive (kind of) maps. It's a nice touch to hear metal detectors go off when you run through them, and have sprinkler systems go off when there's an explosion in the room, as well as breakable glass.
  • Mod support. Modders make everything more interesting. It's a fact. A fact reinforced by my endlessly re-skinned weapons, and wilhelm scream death sound. Everything needs a wilhelm scream death sound.

    Some Suggested Improvements:

  • Better player models. The map looks fantastic, the guns look fantastic, but the people.. not quite so much, Definately not a game breaker, it just slightly irks me.
  • More destructable environments. I'd love it if my RPG could blow a giant hole in a wal a-la battlefield, or if incindiaries could actually burn down buildings. There's limitations to source engine, i know, but if there was a sequel in the works in say, cryengine or frostbite... food for thought..
  • More equipment. For example, there's no medics. IFAKs and CATs would make for great accessories, and could be implemented with a bleedout system. Also plenty more weapon attatchments, optics, and kit pieces exist out there that could be thrown in.
  • Bleedout system. As mentioned above, this could boost immersion and realism if implemented properly. Think S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or something similar.

Regardless of the improvements i would make to this game in later updates or a sequel, the bottom line is that this game is an experience that FPS gamers should haveat some point. It plays well by yourself and with friends, and is a good challenge for anyone looking to up their game from something casual like CS:GO.
Definately worth the $15 price tag.

One of the best shooters out there but with a community brimming with big-headed ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s. Even when you join a server called UK Noobs, you still have overweening ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s wanting to kick you off because you haven't got a kill yet and you've only been on 5 minutes. Fortunately it's not a pick-up-and-play game, there is a learning curve to it. So let the noobs learn by trial and error because, chances are, you're gonna get smashed at first, but steady progress will be made.

Realistic, fun, diverse. The sounds are great, graphics too, maps size are perfect. Enough maps to learn the key spots and never get bored.

So i will be honest! I bought this game 5 months ago.
after i played a few games, i quit, and i contacted steam to get my money back!

this game is what everyone should call, a war simulator!

After got boring played CSGO and bf4 and ♥♥♥♥, i redownloaded INSURGENCY.
I had to give it more time! And i did!

Amazing sound, amazing gun models, amazing gun customization, amazing gameplay,
REAL gameplay! When you run, u cant aim, u cant reload, u cant strafe properly!
U have to be quiet, quick and precise! If you want to survive! One bullet and you are dead!
I was waiting so much for a game like this!

I love this game, and maybe its my favourite fps game ever!
Last night it was the first time i had a dream about being in a game, and insurgency made me dream of it!

Insurgency: An indie team of gamers turned modders turned developers. Everything about this game was done right. From the attention/engagement with the community to the sales that basically give this game away for free, which in turns invites more gamers, modders, and FREE content for the game from both the community and developers.

I got the game for free from a friend and what attracted me the most was the modding support and the open modding community. This allowed me to jump right into modding my own server out immediately. Under 2 years later, I host the most popular coop servers in the game with a continuously growing 700+ member community.

Bottom Line
If you enjoy immersive PvP and or Coop with tons of different servers, mods, and content. You'll enjoy Insurgency.

Definate 10/10

First off, not for the easily frustrated. This game is difficult, but rewarding.

Now, for the nitty gritty (sorta).

Team play is nearly a must. You can do well on your own, and you can decimate a group of enemies on your own if you're experienced enough or just have a great position, but more times than not, having a competent squad at your back or your front is typically always better than being a lone wolf.

Communication is just as important as it is in any other game, and if you don't (have/want to use) a mic, this game gives a good means to do so, with (mostly) fleshed out voice commands. I could recommend a few, but this isn't the place for it. What matters, is that you can generally get your message out without having to type. It is typically easier to communicate with someone who you've spent a few hours playing with.

Gunplay and controls are tight; it's a source game, what do you expect? As for gunplay, weapon recoil is not going to have you admiring the skybox, but it's not going to have every weapon acting as a lasergun. Almost every weapon can one-shot the chest (Depends on target's armour, what type of ammunition you are using, and caliber of gun.), and all weapons will one-shot the head under average circumstances.
Movement and navigation is crisp and as clean as any other source game, save for the small map props that can peak up from the dirt, or a ledge that's just barely elevated enough that you have to jump. Other than that, movement speed itself is not fast, but you won't be a slugman.

Overall/TL;DR: Teamplay is recommended, Communication is concise, Gunplay is dandy, movement is crisp.
Recommended if you enjoy games like Red Orchestra 2 or Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege.

I have never felt so antagonised, insulted and absolutely useless in a games Tutorial or 'Training' as Insurgency puts it.
10/10 would be shouted at by angry American again.

This game is one of the best tactical shooters currently on the market and it's not even expensive.

The game has everything a modern shooter needs to have and if you don't like the modern setting download the WW2 mod Day of Infamy and enjoy.

Only downside to all of this is the fact the game is built on source engine and thus hitreg sucks on some servers.

This has to be the best FPS I've ever played. Extremely realistic (except for the bots). Very worth it for the price.

Fun game if you're into realistic warfare game

They support visual mods

My game turned from serious war place to insurgents supporting hatsune miku and anime graffitis everywhere

If you're insurgent , 11/10 your teammate would scream allahu akbar whenever he/she throws a nade

This is a great game, he is different from Battlefield and Call of Duty, but the playability is still not inferior to the former, you can work together with the mission or a multiplayer game with friends, but a bit difficult to operate, great quality.10/10
