"One of the best Single Player FPS ever made, developed in the rock solid Source Engine which provides responsiveness not found in many other shooters."

About This Game

1998. HALF-LIFE sends a shock through the game industry with its combination of pounding action and continuous, immersive storytelling. Valve's debut title wins more than 50 game-of-the-year awards on its way to being named "Best PC Game Ever" by PC Gamer, and launches a franchise with more than eight million retail units sold worldwide.

NOW. By taking the suspense, challenge and visceral charge of the original, and adding startling new realism and responsiveness, Half-Life 2 opens the door to a world where the player's presence affects everything around him, from the physical environment to the behaviors even the emotions of both friends and enemies.

The player again picks up the crowbar of research scientist Gordon Freeman, who finds himself on an alien-infested Earth being picked to the bone, its resources depleted, its populace dwindling. Freeman is thrust into the unenviable role of rescuing the world from the wrong he unleashed back at Black Mesa. And a lot of people he cares about are counting on him.

The intense, real-time gameplay of Half-Life 2 is made possible only by Source®, Valve's new proprietary engine technology. Source provides major enhancements in:

  • Characters: Advanced facial animation system delivers the most sophisticated in-game characters ever seen. With 40 distinct facial "muscles," human characters convey the full array of human emotion, and respond to the player with fluidity and intelligence.
  • Physics: From pebbles to water to 2-ton trucks respond as expected, as they obey the laws of mass, friction, gravity, and buoyancy.
  • Graphics: Source's shader-based renderer, like the one used at Pixar to create movies such as Toy Story® and Monster's, Inc.®, creates the most beautiful and realistic environments ever seen in a video game.
  • AI: Neither friends nor enemies charge blindly into the fray. They can assess threats, navigate tricky terrain, and fashion weapons from whatever is at hand.

This game is acclaimed as being legendary.
So, obviously I HAD to play the entire franchise.
I'm still hooked on the lore and gameplay.

If you're expecting the old fast-paced bangabangkaoombBLAAAMSCHDOWPOPOPOOM of Half Life 1, well, I'll get in to that later.

The storytelling and graphics hold up to this day. In fact, some would say they're BETTER than todays. Amazing(?) physics, lighting, and if you get past the mayonaise jar glitch with turret-armed Metrocops, the A.I. is spectacular, often working in squads and providing covering fire for one another, throw grenades, etc.

For those old glory fans, this isn't the aftermath of Black Mesa getting nuked. This is the aftermath of a resonace cascade, and gas-masked aliens are here to ♥♥♥♥ up your world view.

The level design is certainly iconic. Looming feeling of the Combine always watching you in the Eastern European City 17, sunset-casted and damp Canals, haunting, deathly and heavy night of Ravenholm. Sheer cliffs and winding highways of the Coast, crumbling and invasive metal structures of Nova Prospekt, and the fiery streets of the battle of City 17, soldiers and natural hazards lurking at every corner of the way.

Gameplay is, and I'm going to shamelessly compare to HL1, slower than its predecessor, but still lots of fun. Your sprint, possibly to service the more serious storytelling, is literally limited to a meter, and that's WITH the suit. Weapon choice is also notched down from the original, which is slightly dissapointing as well. It's made up, however, for a select iconic masterpiece made specifically for this game: and I'm not talking about any old crowbar. The Gravity Gun is one of the best weapons ever made for a videogame, even if it's introduced quite a ways in to the game.

9.5/10. Very slight imperfections I notice, but otherwise a great choice for any gamer out there.

After years of hesitating to play, now that i've completed this game, i can safely say that this is one of the best steam games you can buy right now. The graphics are great, better than some modern games. The story is pure excellence. the gameplay is superb. The soundtrack is some of the best i heard in a long time. Just play it now, you will not be dissapointed.

I don't think I've ever played this game and went "Damn, this is boring!". But that is because this game is never boring, it's such a classic and the gameplay always makes me come back, you can always pick this classic up and play it every once in a month. It might not be much now but back then? It certainly left a mark in history.

Although Half-Life 2 has somewhat changed from Half-Life 1 when it comes to design, the innovations it brought with the new Source Engine (which is still used up to this day) were amazing for that year. The mimics and so much of possibility that a person even created Garry's Mod for children and adults alike to have fun.

The game itself is amazing.
- The plot needs to be understood via HL wikipedia, not only by the game itself. Once you understand the plot, you realize how realistic an alien invasion can get and how it might look like.
- The graphics were great for that year, you cannot compare them with the new games now as the engine is outdated.
- The gameplay is very Quake-ish, which does break the immersion, but mods can somehow add the 'realistic combat' feel. This quake-ish gameplay is positive on one hand and negative on the other. You have to see it for yourself.
- Voice acting is amazing and professional.
- The physics are amazing when it comes to the Source engine usage of Havok.
- The leveldesign is made in a way that it will never frustrate you, nor bore you, which feels like a genius made it, sometimes you have to use logic in order to advance.

Overall score in the year 2004: 10/10
Overall score in the year 2016: 10/10

I have this fetish of realistic gameplay ever since I played games like Red Orchestra 2, so I do hope that Half-Life 2 will get remastered and designed in a way that would allow us to play it not in a Quake style, but rather in 'realistic shooter' style, in order to give it the true feel of fighting off the enslaving alien regime throughout the blocs and apartments.

A classic. Great graphics, great AI, fantastic locations. Music that is good in certain levels and lacking in others. A world that is as confusing now as it was back then only leaves more and more questions. It ushered in new formula's to FPS's. 5/5
