Mirage Gameplay and Coverage from PAX East

Watch eight minutes of raw gameplay from Mirage: Arcane Warfare from its first public appearance at PAX East 2016. The new title from the creators of Chivalry: Medieval Warfare will release later in 2016.

Recorded by our own team, in an Alpha version demo of Mirage.

Plus, check out PAX East hands-on media impressions of Mirage - to be updated with more to come!

"It needs a little bit more skill, it's less defensive, it's a more aggressive combat system in general - particularly with the addition of abilities. The combat can be quite fast paced at times but it still has the weight of Chivalry: Medieval Warfare"

Angry Joe

“You know Chivalry: Medieval Warfare? Take that, take the training wheels off, take the historical restrictions away and then just go crazy with it and that’s what you have here with magic and special abilities.”

Game Informer

“The premise is easy to love, and with a focus on blocking magic and melee attacks at the right time while finding an opening for magic spells, Mirage is more than just your average FPS with swords and fireballs.”

Tom’s Hardware

“These days, you’re bound to see another multiplayer game with some variation on the first-person shooter (FPS) mechanic. However, Torn Banner stuck to its guns (pun intended) to deliver competitive multiplayer with a melee twist. Adding magic to the mix makes for new ways to take out enemies without overpowering the melee combat that serves as the game's backbone.”,31676.html

Force Gaming

“Having played the game I’d say this is definitely a positive direction that they’re taking it in. They’ve got the the similarly deep combat mechanics [as Chivalry] but then with the extra layer of magic they can make combat a bit more interesting and add an extra layer of depth”

PC Gamer interview

“We’re bringing fighting game mechanics into multiplayer.”

Hardcore Gamer

“After every convention, certain games seem to stand out as the clear winners of a given event. After spending forty-five minutes with the brutal, intense Mirage: Arcane Warfare, it’s safe to say that players should eagerly anticipate Torn Banner’s next title. After all, there was a reason why fans kept on flocking back to hop in and get another match in rather than seeing something new.”

"I’m rather enamoured by the unique flavour of online combat presented by Chivalry. It’s fresh and fun, and like the very best games is easy to get into yet incredibly hard to master."

About This Game

Besiege castles and raid villages in Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is a first-person slasher with a focus on multi-player. Featuring competitive online combat that seeks to capture the experience of truly being on a medieval battlefield. Inspired from the intensity and epicness of swordfighting movies such as 300, Gladiator and Braveheart, Chivalry: Medieval Warfare aims to bring that experience to the hands of a gamer.

The game is skill-based and controls like an FPS, but instead of guns and grenades, players are given swords, shields, maces, battleaxes and longbows. Set in a fictional, yet gritty and realistic world, players will fight in fast paced online battles besieging castles, raiding medieval villages and fighting for glory in the arena with up to 32 players.

Key Features:

  • Deep melee combat system provides players with a huge range of responsive combat options
  • Adjust your attacks and blocks in real time with the mouse for precise and full control of the action
  • Wield an arsenal of up to 60 brutal weapons ranging from broad swords and battle axes to longbows and javelins
  • Dynamic objective system brings team tactics and strategy to the forefront as players batter down gates, raid villages and assassinate enemy royalty to achieve victory.
  • Use a variety of siege weapons ranging from catapults, boiling oil, ballista, battering rams and more
  • Vast, lush environments that transport the player to a gritty and immersive medieval world.
  • Offline play options that allow players to gain familiarity with the controls and gameplay before being thrust into the action.

Seriously this game is fun IF you have friends to play with. The game overall feel is reminding me of TF2 atmosphere, nobody play serious, fights look like sh!t somehow, it's hilarious most of the time, but solo-ing this game is a waste. Get drunk and have some folks on, you wont regret it.

This game is fun until lvl 15. Then be prepared to meet the masters of broken physics and hitbox manipulators. The fencing maestros can be seen bending out of shape and misplacing their head or limbs to other spots on their body just before they bring down their unseen sword upon you to take off your head. They have also mastered the art of insta hits and hits through blocks.
You may stay a while and try to learn young padawan, and some of you will "git gud", but I sense that the majority of you will quickly move on to a title that brings you more entertainment than this broken game.

The game is great and has lots of potential, but it's completely buggy and even reset all my unlocks by accident. At the time of this review, the dev's don't care enough to fix the issue and from what I heard a LOT of people want this game refunded solely on item loss.

First review on steam.
To be honest i can't even beat the training guy with infinite stamina. It already looked awful when hitting the instructor meant not to beak through his shield by hacking through wood splinters with my axe, but dancing with him at supernaular speed. I then tried to join a fight and got to look at it from above for a few minutes. It's a sad, sad thing to say it's described as medieval swordfighting. This is a pure hack n slash thing where comboing is important, and not getting hold of a decent suit of armour or a sharp blade. There's nothing of that. It's more like mortal kombat than anything else i have played.
There's no adventuring, no feeling you may die at some point and that would ruin your career, there's no feeling that you're a heavy mastiff wearing 100 lbs of steel, iron and leather, there is no feeling you have to be stably on our feet and you could charge shiled first in your opponent to slam him to the ground. This is a game for those who think that knights flew like kites, but they rode like cannonballs, instead.

I'm back to playing mount and blade, i wasted my money on this, i am not wasting my time too.

It was good in 2013-2014.
But since 2015 many have begun to use methods to manipulate the swinging system. (reverse overheads, aka rainbows ; literally spins to do accelerated drags which make absolutely no sense in any way, and so on.) Some moves (drags) make some sense, and don't look like someone is literally just dancing with a messer, between 3 people, decapidating each one of them, with one move, while abusing the stupid animations.

I didn't want this game to be fully realistic, but some semi-realistic aspects and some fixes for this poorly designes system would've been welcomed. But, it was too late. They now moved on their next game, and will probably abandoned this one soon.

Like one once said:

Game style: Not F2P, not P2W, but S2W

Spin to Win. 180/360

Edit: for those who want another game that has the potential of crushing chivalry, should check Mordhau. Please do. You will not regret that.

This is one of the few medieval themed games with a big focus on melee combat.

The fighting takes place on decent sized maps with some general objectives to accomplish. Those are mostly kill the enemy team's king, push the battering ram towards the gate, kill peasants or burn houses. They are pretty fun for both teams.

Sadly, for people expecting anything realistic, it is a dissapointment. The actual skill of this game focuses on exploiting bad physics. The combat against "experienced" players is immersion breaking as they are using all the exploits possible to gain an advantage, all while looking downright silly at the same time (knights doing moves no human being could do). It might take skill to do it but it simply isnt proper swordfighting.

You could probably find some fun in it if you're not looking for a interesting spin on melee combat, while not focusing on the realism whatsoever, or you plan on doing some fights with friends.

Personally I cannot recommend the game. I bough it for 1 eur along some other games (humble bundle) and found it quite fun for a limited time, but at full price it's definetely not worth it.

Well, 365 days and 365 hours later, I've decided to compose this review. This once decent game was graduately ruined by the dev team's focus on profit and not on improving the game. Last major update happened 11 months ago, when 2 maps were added. Since then, nothing. Even beside that, the game goes on sale every month at a price of 2,5 euros or something. Ruined by elitists, noobs, and the catasrophycal policy of the dev team. Better pay your local junky for a hand job instead of buying this.

After breaking lvl15 it lets you into the other servers. Where people 20+ levels group together and beat on you and chuckle, it's not a fun game at all after a couple weeks, it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Worth what I paid for it, though.

if you asked me if i recommended this game when I first got it, I would have said yes.

but guess what!!!! it's a no now!!!

ok first and foremost: why in god's name does this game have the option to go 1st or 3rd person? To me, the whole point of the game was supposed to be a first-person melee knight game. But now people can go third person and have greater situational awareness in the midst of multiplayer. That's just dumb. Ya, sure anyone else can do it to, but it kind of ruins what the game was to me just so that I can (try to) play better.

for a game that focuses on melee, the game feels sluggish and slow. The classes seem unbalanced and i found myself playing knight the most even though he's probably the worst. There's something about this game just makes me feel like the whole thing has been dipped in really stale honey. it's kind of sweet and all that, but it's sticky and doesn't leave a good taste in your mouth.

Admittedly, I kind of suck at this game. so that's cause for further frustration. But pretty much the only people who are left playing this and the ones who are going to dominate the scoreboard, are the people who play in 3rd and know how to angle their attacks and aim their camera so they dodge things. It doesn't seem like skillfull playing, it seems like taking the baby way out to be good at a game. I feel like if they were to disallow 3rd person on certain servers (or altogether for all i care) they would lose the tiny player base that still dwells in this game. The Chiv devs are pretty muched cucked into keeping it in in an attempt to maintain these unfun players.

all-in-all it's a really fun idea held back by abused mechanics and a dying community, as well as some bad honey.

This game sat in my game library forever. Finally started playing around with it last night. ♥♥♥♥ yes. More. More. MORE.
The gore, the brutality, the weapon selection, classes, maps, everything is fantastic.

No game is perfect, some "walls" are a pest, some things you should be able to jump onto but can't cause of again said walls and such. But wow, such a fun game for someone who wants to unleash his inner psycho and get some heads flying.

My ♥♥♥♥ is still hard.

Chivalry is pretty fun!
At first....
Let me explain. When you first start up the game and get that BEAUTIFUL cutscene...oh wait wrong game
You launch the game, you join a server and most likely pick Archer. (trust me you will only use Vanguard afterwards)
Then you charge into a cluster of players to help your team. THEN YOU GET ABSOLUTLY SHREDDED BY TEAMATES TRYING TO WIDE SWING ENEMIES WITH A LONG SWORD.
I know team killing is for difficulty, teamwork and realism but holy crap 2v1 situations are impossible to do (especially if its Vanguards) because they will swing at the enemy and hit their teamate in the face with the back of their sword.
Not to mention trolls. The ones that will ONLY teamkill for ****s and giggles. (Thank God for votekick)
At the same time. The swordplay is amazing! The fact you have to look at their sword to block is lots of fun, and the fact you can partially control the sword. It gives you a lot of freedom and REQUIRES skill. But that's where my next complaint comes in.
First thing is obviously is the hitboxes that seem to "glitch." I THINK (keyword) it's actually latency giving them the upper hand and ignoring your block.
Next is about the people who can use the animations to basically exploit.
You can say what you want. But when I ranked to 16 and join a public all I saw were people spinning and dragging. Dragging isn't that bad, but the overuse of overhands while ducking and spinning is annoying.
Seriously! Look at this garbage this other guy shared.

Anyone under rank 15 watch that video and tell me you can beat them with ease.
The easy argument is "They are supposed to be that way."
No. No they aren't. I believe they gave you that freedom so you can control your sword and for realism which made it really cool.
I thought it was awesome that it actually mattered where my sword was in my first person model.
But unfourtunatly the devs can't really do anything about it. So don't complain to them and demand they fix it, because really. What can they do?

(Pluses and Minuses)

+Fun Gameplay mechanics
+Great Maps
+Great Map Mechanics

-Teamkilling cluster♥♥♥♥s
-Animations exploits
-Latency Issues

I only really recommend it if it's on sale. The game is fun when you're rank is 0-15. Afterwards you are a sitting duck.
If you have friends with this game then I reccomend it at any price! Duels and private servers are the best part if you feel left out. Again the exploits suck but what can we do? (If you are going to say "They take skill, they aren't exploits." Exploits take skill most of the time.)

Quite possibly the most brutal gaming experience to date.

- First time playing the game
- 4 classes, guess I'll go for the one with the biggest sword
- Playing the knight when suddenly, vanguard rushes me with a polearm and I quickly bleed out.
- Continue playing and proceed to get decapitated.
- learn about different attacks and manage to 5v1 some people with a war hammer

It only takes one round to fall in love with this game. If a medieval bloodbath is something that fancies you, pick this game up!
