About This Game

Daedalic Entertainment, once called “Lucasarts from Germany“ by the GameStar magazine, invites the players into a fantastic comedy adventure that revolves around a crazy love story of Rufus and Goal.

In Deponia, the world has degenerated into a vast garbage dump, in which the crotchety Rufus ekes out his sorry existence. He is part of the lowest social class, doomed to live his life in literal mountains of trash. He hopes for an opportunity to get into the world of the rich, who live in a floating city high above the clouds. Fate seems to smile on the snotty good-for-nothing when one day the attractive lady named Goal from the higher sector plummets into one of the trash heaps. Rufus decides to help the young woman out by taking her back to her husband. When he notices that Goal's husband is a dead ringer for himself, he hatches a diabolical scheme to gain access to the upper world. However, things don't work out quite as planned, since he has feelings for the beauty which limits his usual unscrupulousness.

Help Rufus, the poor boy from the junkyard, to win over the girl from heaven. Only with this rich girl from his dreams he might be able to escape Deponia and, unexpectedly, to save the planet.

Key Features:

  • Unique comic style with hand-drawn HD resolution 2D graphics

A cool point-n-click adventure game by Daedalic Entertainment.

Deponia

The game has reminded me of some point-n-click mysterious adventure games which I've loved to play, but this one has fine and unique comic style graphics, seriously impressed me when I saw this game from Steam's Queue. Never been told to play this one, so I managed to figure it out by myself, and it's true! This game has so many preferential features from its steampunk world to puns. The game also has rather lengthy story but you can still enjoy it (and there are lots of silly plots in here).

You will be playing as a reckless guy named Rufus, who has a strange sense of humour (he's basically amusing and smart), and you will start with a tutorial you cannot skip it because it is the part of story, uhm maybe (I forget)? . It's like an introduction to character, and you barely find yourself fall in love with this game. You can also choose preference for the control, since it is just a 2D and point-n-click style game, you don't have to do many things with WASD stuff, the control is absolutely simple and easy. You can also skip events and movement, for example when Rufus talks too much or NPC becomes boring because you click him/her several times, or you want to travel faster.

Let's talk about the puzzles, some puzzles are requiring some efforts, not simple like you think that's why the game becomes more challenging and fun, sometimes you manage them by trial and error, or you can be so confused because there are so many missing parts that you can't even find (there isn't any hint button) which means you need extra efforts to pay attention what Rufus/NPCs say. Good things you are given considerable space to save your game in case of need. There isn't Game Over to this thing (let's say Rufus is untouchable), you just have to solve the riddles.

However, the game is a little bit difficult for some new players who are not familiar with riddles, like I say some puzzles may be too hard to solve, but it's kind of a new challenge for those who want to give some efforts, Deponia is still enjoyable. It can also be played with kids who love puzzle!

TL;DR:

Pros:
-Affordable price
-Amusing characters and Puns
-Controls are easy
-Different difficulty for puzzles
-Music is decent
-Obviously cool graphic and art
-Great story

Cons:
-Some bugs can be encountered while playing
-Puzzles are sometimes too hard for new players

Pretty funny point-and-click. Story is ok. Puzzles weren't too confusing and most of them have a pretty obvious way of solving them.

Rufus is the main male character. Goal is the main female character.

Rufus has to dust off his chip in order to put it inside Goal´s brain

No surprise Germans are behind this game.

Really fun and clever game, worth the price, but you might just want to go for the completed saga version that is out now.

"Blech, Gnats ♥♥♥♥" - Rufus

I got Deponia in a bundle including 4 other games, so I got my moneys worth out of it. That said, $1 isn't a lot to throw away.

Deponia is NOT worth $20.

It's a short, shallow post-apocalyptic world with no real attempt at world building (which is sad as the espresso machine showed that it could have had potential), with an unlikable main character (Being by design doesn't make it any better), puzzles that require out of game knowledge (Not everyone has heard of phosphorescence), and a pretentious end of act cutscenes that aren't adding anything to the narrative.

Since they've been compared to LucasArts in the description, I feel I should say that this wouldn't even be Act 1 of a Monkey Island game.

Rufus is the perfect mascot for this franchise - A self centered egotist who thinks they're a lot cleverer than they are.

In an attempt to escape his junkyard existance, Rufus runs head on into a mystery that will put him on an adventure to save his garbage dump and all the unique characters in it!

PROS:
  • Really good art!
  • Voiceovers are done well
  • Unique characters
  • Some good puzzles

CONS:
  • Story... what's the story again?
  • Puzzles devolve into pixel hunts
  • Unclear/too many objectives at times
  • Some zany/weird dialogue

I really, really wanted to love this game. The art looked amazing. The dialogue reminded me of something out of old adventure games like Monkey Island. The atmosphere seemed unique. In the end, however, I found myself lost a lot of the time trying to figure out what to do next. When I knew what I had to do, I found myself searching around random areas trying to find anything that I could use to help me solve the puzzles because it wasn't clear what I needed. Most of the time I found frustration. If it's on a great sale, try it out and see if you like it. $20 is sadly too much.

Overpriced, and lasts for 6-7 hours. I bought this game for maybe 1$ or 2 but still overpriced. Don't even think pay for 10$ for this, tho...

I like this game for a few reasons: it has got the detailed cartoon graphics I happen to like, the main character is likable even if they try to tell you he isn't and I like the setting of the story. And boy, that's good enough for me!

Great entertainment of which I would happily pay the full price, but didn't as I got it at a rediculously low price on a discounted bundle on a weekend sale. Can't wait to play the other Deponia games.

ps. It was a little too short from awesome.
