Forget anyone who tells you this is a game to be skipped in the Witcher franchise - having re-played it 8 years after my first play-through it is as fun and immersive as the first time. Each game in the series has a vastly different gameplay style and this game is more of a rythem game than its sequels in terms of the gameplay itself. That being said, the first Witcher game is a brilliant RPG that includes choices and consequences that actually matter to the plot! If you love the books and the other games, please check this out. Although there are numerous inconsistencies with the books, there are also a lot of fun references to them, so it really all depends on how anal-retentive you are about rigid consistency toward Sapkowski's source material to love this game. Being a book fan - you should love this game!

I am proud to say that I read the books before the Witcher came to PC. However 10 more years had to pass plus I had to finish W2 and W3 as well to get back to this gem of RPG and try it, play it, this time for real.

Although the game aged a lot it is still a joy to play, somehow reminded me the classic RPG era with Baldur's Gate in front so that's a huge plus to me.

So, if you are new to this franchise please please please play the first part as well (and read the books for gods sake, support the writer!!!)

P.S.: and do not forget, the books came first, not the game - something what is not well known on the west...

The Witcher 1...

This game is a very old and nostalgic game.
It was by far the most amazing game I played alongside witcher 2-3
The story is detailed,touching,mysterious.
Every action has a conseqence. Even the tinniest bit.
The game itself is adventurous and deep.

The Soundtrack..
There is something special about it.
It sounds and feels heavenly peaceful.

Do I recommend this game?
If it was the last day on earth and I had to replay 1 game until the end.
It would be this
So yes
I do.

This game is extraordinary. I purchased this game before reading the books, but played it after I read them and that added so much to the already great story...
Anyway, the game itself is just great. Although the controls are a bit oldschool, after you ge used to it, there's nothing in the way for you to enjoy the story of a freshly resurrected witcher Geralt of Rivia, which takes place in a very nicely made city of Wyzima and its surroundings. Although the game is old and so are the graphics, it's just beautiful and with the option of importing saves to the second Witcher, it really makes every decision important.
It can also be quite difficult, so remember to save, because there's nothing more unnerving than having to fight through loads of monsters and talking to a lot of people for the second time.
So, the main question is: would I recommend this game? The answer is not really difficult. Of course, andif you read the books, then it's almost necessary for you to give this old jewel a go.

Hey! Well at this point there's not much to say about this game, but i still want to give my positive review, especially considered how many people actually say to skip this game and go to the sequels. While i think this game is a bit less fun and epic than some of the other western rpg (Gothic 2, Risen 2, Demon/Dark souls), this game is a great entry on the western rpg genre and a great start of an incredible saga. Long story short, do not believe anyone who tells you to skip this game. The two things i think are the strong point of this game are: 1) How polished this game is, no crashes, bugs, etc. 2) And this is a really interesting point that should be really adressed in a lot other games/ movies and books but i rarely see it mentioned/used (the only other game that comes to mind is Army of Two: the 40 day, and even there it's not as deep as in this game) it's that not only choices really matters but as in life sometimes every choice is wrong, and even an apparently wise choice is wrong. The only bad thing i found about this version of the game is that the "dlc" isn't worth it, there's two super short additional adventures from the developers, while all of the others are bad/boring mod like adventures from the community. I give this game a 7/10, be sure to play it.

The visuals and combat mechanics have not aged well, but this still manages to be an immersive RPG with some great characters and an engaging story.

I have never played any Witcher games, and I thought I should start from the beginning. I thought it would be too old to play but I gave it a try anyways, and I'm really enjoying it! I did add a texture mod and an item stacking mod, which really helps. I really enjoy the story, and I like how you have control over some decisions. The combat was weird at first but now I enjoy it. The voice acting is great. One thing I don't care for is they didn't spend much time designing characters, so you get the same model over and over again with people you talk to.
I'm about 15 hours in and I'm glad I bought this! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys playing slightly older games, and who like story rich fantasy feeling games.

- Engaging story with non-obvious plot twists.
- Excellent voice acting.
- Choice-based story consequences.
- Long adventure.
- Good mix of spells/swords/crafting to keep you entertained.
- Additional adventures included by devs and fans that add backstory.

- No controller support.
- Ok background music.
-Your decisions not only impact the story, but some lore-important side-quests will be closed off to you depending on what you choose to do/who you do or do not randomly run into in the cities. There's no real way to experience all the quests without looking online the first time you play. Some people may like this, but I don't feel this game merits a second play through just to pick up the remaining quests that complete the background lore. There's often no warning you are completing a main-quest segment and will be leaving the area either, making it double challenging to find all the side-quests yourself.

- Quite unstable for me on Windows 10. It took me 5 in-game hours and many tweaks to get the crashing down from once every 20 mins to once every couple hours. They should really re-think the two-hour return limit.

- Many glitches and bugs. There were times a character would try to hand me an important quest item, but my inventory was full, so the item just disappeared from the game. The last chapter is totally unpolished and many of the mechanics don't work normally at the end of the game. Several randomly bugged character textures as well, making me think a disfigured monster was attacking when it was actually a book merchant.

- The swordplay is based around timed clicking. This worked ok for Legend of Dragoon, but for an action RPG it feels a little silly.

- The cities would often drop down to less than 30 fps in crowded areas, despite using far better hardware than was available when this game came out (using an i5 4590 and an R9 390).

- The country-side part of the world feels big and empty, almost like this was supposed to be some kind of MMO but is void of life.

- Some weapons and ability upgrades are not spaced out well and come FAR too late into the game so that most of them are pointless.

- If you don't do things in the order the game was expecting, it can get confused and your journal will tell you to go somewhere that isn't where you are supposed to go. The game catches up eventually when you pass certain checkpoints, but the story feels out of order and you wind up feeling like you are missing something.

Conclusions: I view a "thumbs up" as saying this game is worth paying full price for. If you want to play this game for the full Witcher experience, wait until it is on sale. I view this game as skippable in the series. Obviously I trudged through and I enjoyed the story, but the game was a mess to play with few solutions to common problems, and it single-handedly convinced me the refund window needs to be lengthened.

If you came here because you want to play the newest Witcher, but don't know the full story.
Then I recommend you start playing Witcher 1 first.
I played Witcher 1 before going to Witcher 2 and eventually Witcher 3.
And I can tell you that I didn't regret playing this game.
Ofcourse the game is somewhat older.
But if you want to known the full story of Geralt and friends you should definitely start here.

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director's Cut is a marvelous game with a rich story, supported by deep characters. I am fond of RPG games since my childhood and I really found both the main story line and side quests worthy of commendation.

Combat difficultness is adjustable and i think you should play minimum in normal level in order to enjoy the game, easy level is too easy not even slightly challanging at all.

Enchanched edition's graphics are well done too.

One last word, this game is not an open world game like witcher III , there are solid boundariies. Consider this if its important for you.

Painful to play :(

The fighting system is soo stange that I honestly thought it was a bug. BUt no, you need to hold down the left mouse button for 3 seconds to swing your sword, not a single click like I've used in every other game.

I gave up when it came to mixing potions, no idea what to do and no guide.

One of the best RPGs I have ever played. Story is truly deep and full of twists. Gameplay in general is very addictive, all the components are fit naturaly into the game and together they make a mixture you will not be able to forget for a very long time.

Just got this game and was vey excited to play it, especialy once i saw the opening cut.
Got to the title screen and picked new game and went though the starting options, and as it loaded the screen went gray.
The next thing that happened was the game CRASHED........ i loaded back up and went through the starting options again and the screen loaded and was still gray, but the while loading letters went as if the game was about to start and yet again a crash, only difference was instead of the blue screen i got the first time it was all black. I then restarted the game and went to start the game, but now i get (Warning! Minimum system requierments not met.)..... Iv attempted to restart my PC, but i get the same message..

Please help with a fix or if its the game on windows 10 please fix

+ it's just a good RPG game. ... difficult to explain it though. And you can get it on sale for a couple of bucks.

- non existent sex scenes - their execution is very symbolic in the game: The screen quickly fades out and you get a slighlty erotic card with that girl on it. Yay! ... very unsatisfying. (The witcher 2 is better in this regard.)
- somewhat dated graphics, but tolerable. You can get used to it, no big deal.
- some lack of video options. I would like to turn on V-sync - why no option for it?
- bugs and glitches: at some points you will see some annoying things: white glowing on everyones faces / maybe stuttering cutsenes / ... many people experience different glitches - just go over to discussion section and see for yourself.
- some minor inventory annoyances: like not being able to put stuff inside a chest/closet/box: you just read a book and want to put it from your inventory back to a shelf? - well you can't - you have to just drop it on the ground and walk away like a d0uchebag.

side notes:
about CD-key:
you can redeem a free copy of witcher 1 on
* Right click on The witcher 1 in your steam, and click "View CD-Key...". Copy it.
* Log in to your account and go to link
and paste your key there.
* done. You redeemed your free, no DRM witcher 1 copy on gog.
My point is: that's the only purpose of the CD-key. You do NOT need to activate the game with a CD-key as the steam will keep saying to you when you first start a game.

There is a reason why I never followed nor was I interested in The Witcher series; and it's because of the RPG genre which is implemented into a game that only has Single Player. Usually RPG games like this, with Skill Trees, equipments, upgradables etc. are found in RPG games that are also MMO, thus the game gets boring really quickly, especially for a game that is single player only. Okay fine, this game was made in 2008, and was the first game from The Witcher franchise, and there are bound to be countless of bugs and annoying features.

Graphics wise, for a 2008 released game is really beautiful, with a rich storyline & missions, but is plagued with cringe worthy conversations, awful combat mechanics and many awkward moments. True, the so called, "awful combat mechanics" is what make The Witcher franchise stand out, as they make combat much more difficult compare to just a simple Hack-N-Slash, which is interesting; but I found myself making awkward movements in combat because of it's really buggy combat system, as sometimes the hits register, while times Geralt just swings his sword & grunts, but nothing happens. Conversations are really cringe worthy too, as you can really sense the sarcasm in their tone and how much they did not want to be voice acting for the game at all; which really annoys me because a good game is where the voice acting is priceless, and the tone the actors bring out, will make players want to listen to every bit of the conversation, but not for The Witcher 1, I literally skip most of the conversation because it's so dull and boring to hear.

I got this game as a bundle which include The Witcher 2 & The Witcher 3 for only $30+, which I found to be worthed it, due to its's rich hours of campaign, and knowing that The Witcher 3 itself was already $35 during sales, and the bundle was to get 3, for cheaper than The Witcher 3 itself, so why not? I personally would not buy this game if it's not on sales, I have yet to play the other 2 Witcher games yet, but this game has already gave me a good impression, I just hope the cringe worthy conversations and awkward combat system will be fixed or better in 2 & 3. A must have for anyone who is into RPG or have played The Witcher games before, but have not tried Witcher 1. However, if you are a storymode kind-of-guy like me, don't buy this game.

Overall, I'm rating this game 6/10
