Forget anyone who tells you this is a game to be skipped in the Witcher franchise - having re-played it 8 years after my first play-through it is as fun and immersive as the first time. Each game in the series has a vastly different gameplay style and this game is more of a rythem game than its sequels in terms of the gameplay itself. That being said, the first Witcher game is a brilliant RPG that includes choices and consequences that actually matter to the plot! If you love the books and the other games, please check this out. Although there are numerous inconsistencies with the books, there are also a lot of fun references to them, so it really all depends on how anal-retentive you are about rigid consistency toward Sapkowski's source material to love this game. Being a book fan - you should love this game!

I am proud to say that I read the books before the Witcher came to PC. However 10 more years had to pass plus I had to finish W2 and W3 as well to get back to this gem of RPG and try it, play it, this time for real.

Although the game aged a lot it is still a joy to play, somehow reminded me the classic RPG era with Baldur's Gate in front so that's a huge plus to me.

So, if you are new to this franchise please please please play the first part as well (and read the books for gods sake, support the writer!!!)

P.S.: and do not forget, the books came first, not the game - something what is not well known on the west...

The Witcher 1...

This game is a very old and nostalgic game.
It was by far the most amazing game I played alongside witcher 2-3
The story is detailed,touching,mysterious.
Every action has a conseqence. Even the tinniest bit.
The game itself is adventurous and deep.

The Soundtrack..
There is something special about it.
It sounds and feels heavenly peaceful.

Do I recommend this game?
If it was the last day on earth and I had to replay 1 game until the end.
It would be this
So yes
I do.

Hey! Well at this point there's not much to say about this game, but i still want to give my positive review, especially considered how many people actually say to skip this game and go to the sequels. While i think this game is a bit less fun and epic than some of the other western rpg (Gothic 2, Risen 2, Demon/Dark souls), this game is a great entry on the western rpg genre and a great start of an incredible saga. Long story short, do not believe anyone who tells you to skip this game. The two things i think are the strong point of this game are: 1) How polished this game is, no crashes, bugs, etc. 2) And this is a really interesting point that should be really adressed in a lot other games/ movies and books but i rarely see it mentioned/used (the only other game that comes to mind is Army of Two: the 40 day, and even there it's not as deep as in this game) it's that not only choices really matters but as in life sometimes every choice is wrong, and even an apparently wise choice is wrong. The only bad thing i found about this version of the game is that the "dlc" isn't worth it, there's two super short additional adventures from the developers, while all of the others are bad/boring mod like adventures from the community. I give this game a 7/10, be sure to play it.

The visuals and combat mechanics have not aged well, but this still manages to be an immersive RPG with some great characters and an engaging story.

I have never played any Witcher games, and I thought I should start from the beginning. I thought it would be too old to play but I gave it a try anyways, and I'm really enjoying it! I did add a texture mod and an item stacking mod, which really helps. I really enjoy the story, and I like how you have control over some decisions. The combat was weird at first but now I enjoy it. The voice acting is great. One thing I don't care for is they didn't spend much time designing characters, so you get the same model over and over again with people you talk to.
I'm about 15 hours in and I'm glad I bought this! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys playing slightly older games, and who like story rich fantasy feeling games.

A game about a man with fabulous silky hair who goes around seducing females and collecting their nudes after sex. In between he walks around a giant swamp killing monster-like creatures with stylish swordsmanship and overall swag. I played half of the game without steam connection, the other half with. So probably 80 hours of fun, counting the time I spent with that awesome mini-game. Forget about Skyrim, do yourself a favor and get the 3 Witcher games.

I originally began playing this game just for the main story; to get the background for the withcer 2 and 3, the latter I have already beaten. The gameplay immediately stood out to me as being rather outdated, though surprisingly it grew on me. The story is the real star here though, I was completely infatuated with it by the beginning of the thrird chapter, so much so that I decided not only to restart the game, doing all the side quests, but also reading all the books and short stories, and boy, I was not disappointed by the books. I would highly recommend not only playing the first two games to completion before playing the third game, but also read the books before any of the games. It gave me an immense understanding of the characters and evenced referenced in the games. CD Projekt RED clearly understood the base material, and you will garner much more from the games if you do as well, not to mention, on their own they are extremely entertaining novels. This game is a true masterpeice that has (so far) stood the test of time phenomenally.

After spending dozens of hours on this game and finally finishing it, I will say that the witcher is extremely flawed game yet still enjoyable with incredible atmosphere.

You are Gerhard the Witch Man.
As the Witch Man, you can use some magic, but less than Witch Women (because they are better at it).
To make up for that flaw of yours, you have learned to make all kinds of cocktails to get yourself drunk more efficiently (because that's what men are better at).

Gerhard defeats his enemies by dancing around with his sword.
You have to pick the proper dance and sword, or people won't fall in love with you, but will beat you to death instead.

I like how some of the women are very emancipated by offering their bodies in order to avoid paying the Witch Man fee after you complete quests for them. It's very progressive and shows how confident they are in their sexual prowess (much like men do, so that's equality right there). They know they're worth every penny, and I have nothing but respect for them.

Gerhard can prove his manliness by engaging in fun, manly activities like brawl fights and losing a fortune at poker dice.
I went to the swamp to kill some dragons, but there were only very small ones. Now the NPCs think I'm only a little cool and I have to yell at people on the internet to make myself feel better.
When you're done proving your manliness to the world, you can pray on a carpet to unwind and find your inner peace. I really like these influences from different cultures. Like I said, it's really progressive.

If you want to be a real Witch Man, go ahead and buy this game.
It's a bit old, but you're not getting any younger either, so who are you to complain, right?

I only wish I could play as a girl. I really like having boobs and dressing up.
That would have been kinda cool.

Played this game for the first time this year (2016), so I know that it is an outdated game.

The history is really good and makes you want to keep going. The gameplay is a bit rough and the combat is very repetitive and not challenging, but what really matters is the history anyway.

For an eight years game, I would say that it is one of the best that I have ever played. I paid around U$ 1,00 and I have already more than 30 hours playing Witcher, so, totally worth!

Good game, story is well written, pretty long and interesting. Gameplay is kinda strange (unless you get used to), lack of customization. Graphics are good compared to 2007 standarts, compatability problems (game is 9 years old already, can't blame that much). Pretty big world with a lot of things to do, quests are pretty repeatble (bring this, bring that...) . Still enjoyed first Witcher even after I had played The Witcher 3. 7/10
