What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“In Early Access we can see the community's favourite levels, features, characters, and their biggest concerns, then focus on those.
Would you like more Level Workshop support? More official weapons? A character workshop? Let us know!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Until mid-2015”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will have more content, less bugs, and will be free to play locally. Everyone who buys the game during Early Access will keep all functionality they have in the game.

The free version of SpeedRunners is available now on Steam! Search for SpeedRunners Party Mode!”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Gameplay features are all in and set! Play online or local multiplayer, single-player, and check out 10,000 created levels in the user-level workshop!
We're improving network code, fleshing out the leagues and progression system, working on redesigning the UI, adding more playable characters, and a lot more!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The final game will cost more or less the same, and local multiplayer is out there officially for free.
We do intend to sell character skin packs.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We read EVERYTHING that comes in! Everyone in the office is active on the forums, and chats to fans in Steam messenger all the time. Your reviews and comments and messages come up in conversation every day.”

"SpeedRunners is Mario Kart on foot, basically. Race your friends and destroy them with powerups. Tons of fun but it's early access and a bit buggy."

SpeedRunners SteamOS/Linux is in testing

Before you get excited about SpeedRunners listing a Linux/SteamOS build, please keep in mind it's just a test.

When you download the Linux build, it will give you the "Party Mode" demo -- the offline version of SpeedRunners designed for parties and conventions/showcases.

We are testing to see stability of that build, because it has much less dependencies (no online, no multiple controller setups, etc), and once we get the hang of it, we will proceed to port the full version to SteamOS.

Nonetheless a good first step!

One of the best Party games ever! Heck its better then Mario party and super smash bros! Also playing with random players online is fun to and find myself playing online for hours. Probs one of the best parts of this game is playing with your friends at night. This game is still in beta and theres gonna be a lot coming soon! 69/10

I'm really loving the game so far, and at this price could already recommend it to anyone.

-a lot of fun, and fairly original gameplay
-a lot of variety in characters, though this doesn't really affect gameplay (which I suppose is yet another good thing)
-the game seems quite polished in the sense that most things seem to work as intended, and there are a lot of things that make you go 'oh yeah, good idea' while playing (though, of course, I can't think of any now)
-multiplayer works rather well, though it can take a minute to find a game, which I'm guessing will improve as the player base grows
-ranked matches
-pretty cool community so far. Seen some rage quits, but no proper moaning/swearing as of now
-community made content (just maps as far as I can tell, but who knows)

-the game occasionally crashes for me (haven't yet looked up whether more people have this, but I'm guessing they do). This doesn't happen frequently enough to be a major issue, as restarting and loading the game doesn't take much, but it still sucks when you happen to be in a ranked match or with a nice bunch of people
-the music gets rather repetitive, which isn't that big a deal. It would be nice if the music selection had some more variety at some point

All considered, I'd really recommend it to anyone who enjoys the idea of a side-scrolling racer (runner...) which had me actually laughing out loud at times.

I got this game because others have played it over YouTube, but once I saw that I could play as a girl dressed up as a fox, I threw my money at the screen to buy this game, and don't even get me started on once I found out about that orange skin for Lucky Cat. With the use of grappling hooks, boost pads, and a mulititude of different items to slow down the competition, (those confounded golden hooks) this makes for an epic leg race around the track.

I'd recommend it to anyone who knows how to react quickly and who also has a large memory for knowing where things are on different tracks.
