What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“In Early Access we can see the community's favourite levels, features, characters, and their biggest concerns, then focus on those.
Would you like more Level Workshop support? More official weapons? A character workshop? Let us know!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Until mid-2015”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will have more content, less bugs, and will be free to play locally. Everyone who buys the game during Early Access will keep all functionality they have in the game.

The free version of SpeedRunners is available now on Steam! Search for SpeedRunners Party Mode!”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Gameplay features are all in and set! Play online or local multiplayer, single-player, and check out 10,000 created levels in the user-level workshop!
We're improving network code, fleshing out the leagues and progression system, working on redesigning the UI, adding more playable characters, and a lot more!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The final game will cost more or less the same, and local multiplayer is out there officially for free.
We do intend to sell character skin packs.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We read EVERYTHING that comes in! Everyone in the office is active on the forums, and chats to fans in Steam messenger all the time. Your reviews and comments and messages come up in conversation every day.”

r40: XP System, New Characters, Price Increase

Biggest SpeedRunners Update To Date

Today we released r40, the biggest SpeedRunners content update to date. The discussion about this update has been going on for months on the forums. We felt like SpeedRunners was missing long-term goals, and was getting overwhelming with the amount of content.

Ranked is now locked for new players

We also didn't want players to join ranked without understand the game's mechanics in-depth, and learning the maps.

Add the increasing amount of designed characters, and we had a problem. The solution was to create an XP System. Now new players will start off with most of the content locked, including weapons, characters, and maps. Ranked will also be locked until Level 5.

You level up and unlock content gradually

As you level up, you will unlock all this content, and more. The idea is to have a full story unfold as you level up, told through comic books. These will come in later.

Today's update is a first pass on the XP System, so things may get tweaked. Existing players who want to try to level up from Level 0 now can erase their progress in the options menu. Don't worry though, there's plenty of new stuff added to the game.

Not the full update log

  • New loading screen lines
  • Added Romanian translation
  • Bug fixes
  • Added like 50 new characters if you count alternate colors
  • Added an XP system
  • There's more stuff for you to discover yourself

Price Increase Coming June 1st

In line with this huge content update, we will also be increasing the price of SpeedRunners to $14.99 on June 1st.

XP Progression Needs Your Feedback!

Please give us feedback on the progression of unlocks. These are things we need to tweak as we go.

Speedrunners is a 2D-sidescroller that mixes in some elements of speed-platforming, combat-racing, and modern MOBA-lite games. It plays like something you may find as a minigame mode in a Mario Party game.

The matches are played as a footrace through 2D circuit maps where the object is to get so far ahead of your opponents that they fall of the edge of the map. There are boosts and grappling hooks you must learn to use effectively on each map to move quickly. There are also pick-ups like rockets and freezing laser beams to add that right touch of chaos to the races.

You have the option to play custom matches with bots, or with local players for good-old-time couch coop with your friends. There are both quick match and ranked match options for automatic online matchmaking. The ranked match mode has a progression system and point leaderboards.

Most of the variety in the game comes from the various maps. And the workshop means infinite possibilities for maps. Some users have already created some pretty interesting maps. There are also many characters to choose from, with several of them being crossovers from other games. They seem to have differing animations but no differences in abilities.

The graphics are pretty much what you would expect from a modern 2D-sidescroller. The music and sounds fit the style of the game; and I believe there is a community guide available that shows you how to easily integrate your own music into the game. The controls are fluid and intuitive; I personally used a controller and thought the controls were pretty optimal. Lastly, I didn’t experience any glitches or crashing… although some people have reported crashing on certain workshop maps.

The game does what it does well, undoubtedly. There is, however, a lack of variety of game modes currently in the Early Access stage of this game. But, with the workshop and the ease of modding of this game, there is definitely a bright future ahead for Speedrunners. I look forward to seeing what else is added to the game in the future.

Great game to play no matter if it's once in a while, or all the time. It's platforming, Racing, and raging all in one. I so if you can, Buy the Game. Easy to get into, but harder later on. The higher your rank is the better the competition. So as long as you know how to platform you're all set.

Run, jump, sprint and swing your way around thousands of levels while staying on screen or getting eliminated. Launch missiles at your opponents, flatten them with giant fiery boulders, freeze them with ice beams and grapple hook them like Scorpion to stay ahead. The screen begins closing in after the first elimination, and continues to work its way in until a winner is found. All four runners immediately restart the race at the last point, and the race continues. Three wins = victory.

+++ Devs provide new content and updates regularly
+++ Community
+++ Pace of game
+ Plays great with a controller
+ Single player campaign and online multiplayer league racing
+ Workshop offers TONS of additional user-created levels
+ Balanced play with weapons/evasion
+ Grappling hooks
+ Cosmonaut Comrade

- Unable to get friends of the same level into the same online ranked matches I'm in
- Soundtrack sometimes goes out (usually until the first runner is eliminated)
- Can get eliminated by leaving the top of the screen even while in the lead

I don't usually enjoy playing competitive games with people in the same room, but this is one of the few games that I laugh more often than I want to throw my controller across the room when I'm eliminated.

If you like competitive games such as Mario Kart, and you are a fan of platform games then you have no excuse not to buy this. The premise is simple yet addictive. Your hands will be sweating as you fight for 1st place. Lots of custom maps are rotated as well the official ones to give it more longevity. Everything seems to work pretty smoothly and I cannot recommend this game enough.

I and my group of friends get on this game whenever we feel like laughing. It's a fun game to play while having a vocal chat with the people you're playing with. It's also a very competitive game that requires reflexes in order to be good at.

Alright, SpeedRunners is a fast-paced racing game that looks nothing like (and plays nothing like) a normal racing game. It blends elements from platformers and other genres seamlessly... kind of.
The game is chock full of glitches and bugs, a lot of the time pertaining to the constant lag that at least 1 player in these 4-player lobbies suffers from. Be it from a bad service provider, or just the lack of servers this game uses, it gets annoying. It's impossible to do things that you would normally be able to do. For example, if someone with a ping somewhere over 65 uses a golden hook, you can't slide under it. It lags for a second before grabbing onto you anyways. Vice versa, they can slide a full second after it should have grabbed them, but they still get out of it.
As for the previously mentioned bugs that aren't due to lag, there's a good amount. Most of them are menu glitches, some of which were fixed in this last, immense update, some were added. The biggest issue I have is once I've voted for a user made map specifically, then for the next games in that lobby I will always select a user-made level, even if my "cursor" or character head is on a different level. This would mean I could exit and reenter the match, except it will probably match me up with a different group of people. The other menu glitch that came to my attention previously was an unusual glitch where, in the menu adjusting sound, you could get stuck with just the graphics options and sound options selectable and no way to hit done. (that last one was fixed in the r40, thank heavens!)
There was another glitch that I haven't seen before that I had too much of a lack for explanation as to why it might happen, and it took place in the actual game. When I started the race everything seemed fine... until I touched a boost segment. instead of saving the boost, my character acted like I had been holding down the boost button. I played a few games like this before I tried the 4 things I could think of: Unplug and reinsert gamepad, double check my trigger isn't stuck down, check my spacebar wasn't stuck, and change the control for boost to another button and see what it does. all four didn't work, so I "Tried turning it off and on again". That finally worked. I still have no clue what was going on, but at least it hasn't happened again.
There are a few other bugs to the game, like occasionally when I select multi-player on the title menu, it pops up the web browser, etc, but a majority of them don't happen simultaneously, but instead I'll restart the game, to find a different issue, so I restart it again. This ritual does get a bit tedious after a while.
*EDIT* after playing the game more, I came across 2 new glitches. 1: The game refuses to let me level up to the next league, even though it says I have "320/300". After every game it shows the bar at the max, and then switches to an empty bar for the next rank, but I'm still shown as the first ranking. 2: I got over it and continued to play, only to have the game crash after reaching a new reward for the new leveling system. I don't know why, but the game window just disappeared at the results screen, effectively closing it. I'll be honest, the biggest issue is that it LOVES to crash. For a game of this nature, it seems way too complete even as an early access game to crash as often as it does. It's like it doesn't want me to play it for too long so the window just closes for no reason.*/EDIT*
*new edit* I have since reopened the game to find it is at the correct league and points. Why it wouldn't let me go up a league mystifies me, but now it's fine*/new edit*
That being said, the game is still an amazing game. I would play this 24/7 if it didn't have it's road bumps (and, as you can see, I've still played it religiously). From what I've seen, the "Story" mode is mainly bug-free, and if you can't handle the lag from online players, you can always play with AI and friends in a custom lobby. There's a built-in solution for every issue I have found, so in reality, by the end of this, a LOT of people are going to be saying "Get over it, SpeedRunners is an amazing game and you're wrong!" but still, it's much more tolerable than other games *cough* Monstrum *hacking*, and it runs at a very smooth framerate for a game of this size and quality (most games I can't play in a resolution above 800x600. This game I certainly can).
Finally, I say buy this game for 3 main reasons: it has the potential to surpass many MANY more games on the steam store, it will probably have a higher price once it's no longer Early Access, and it's an amazing game already. who wouldn't want to race their friends in a cartoon world of a guy in a unicorn suit, a cat, and a detective dog? I do.
