Xmas Update: Swift Peaks and Freeze Ray item

Introducing Swift Peaks - a cool new SpeedRunners map, providing an ice challenge to skilled players, and a new Freeze Ray item. This is the peak of SpeedRunners level design. It's all downhill from here. I don't know, make up your own puns. Here are some gifs of how the new item & level look:

Swift Peaks

Swift Peaks takes place at a Ski Resort and is a gorgeous Christmas-themed map that focuses on the Sliding Mechanic. A few months ago we enabled players to skid down slopes, gaining speed when doing so. Ski Resort is designed around that mechanic.

Freeze Ray

Freeze Ray instantly turns opponents in front of you into ice cubes, and works like a laser, slowly building up and shooting a beam forward - going through walls and hitting multiple targets!

Tomorrow at 4PM CET we will be livestreamin SpeedRunners, playing against other people online, and giving away gifts! Don't miss it at <- subscribe now!

r35: Workshop Contest Live

Hey everyone! We know you've been waiting for the big update to the Level Selection screen, and the next official map from the SpeedRunners team... today's the day!

Introducing the SpeedRunners Workshop Competition! Starting from today, we're offering our SpeedRunners the chance to get their own levels added to the official SpeedRunners map rotation, right there on the main map selection screen for everyone to see.

As part of the update, we're rejigging the way in which players can navigate the user-created maps, and upvote/downvote user levels. Since there are over 6,000 user maps now, we really felt like there needed to be a more substantial way to sift through them!

And that's not all! Today's update also adds a brand new prototype map to the official roster, direct from the brains of the SpeedRunners team. Get it played and tell us what you think!

Stuff and running:
  • Workshop Competition Live
  • Runs until January 5th
  • Best maps will have the chance to get into the Official SpeedRunners map roster!
  • Updates to level selection screen
  • You can now play Random Workshop Maps in ranked
  • Added Random Workshop Map to make sure the above is possible
  • Figured out how to plug in 2 microphones to our streaming pc
  • Gert-Jan likes nerf guns way too much
  • After playing a Workshop Map you now get a pop-up asking you to upvote/downvote the level, or write a comment. Comments are only accessible with the mouse, and will prompt the Steam Overlay
  • Main menu now has rotation of popular maps, will be changed to Workshop Contest-only in a few days
  • You can easily subscribe to maps from main menu
  • Added new map
  • Made socks to put in the new map
  • It centers around big slopes, and will be Ski Resort-themed
  • Artwork coming hopefully before Christmas
  • Bought a big nerf gun that loads 20 bullets
  • The damn thing jams
  • Gert-Jan still dominates with a 3-barrel nerf pistol
  • Played gangbeasts, it's great fun
  • Signed space for 2015 PAXes. SpeedRunners will be shown at PAX South, PAX East, and PAX Prime in 2015
  • Found a music studio, it's shaping up really good
  • Trying to negotiate with Marvel. So far it's a one way communication line. Does anyone know anyone from Marvel?
  • Agents of SHIELD got pretty good
  • Holy crap it feels great to play Workshop Levels in ranked. And also very silly. The upvote system will ensure only good levels end up in Ranked Workshop Levels rotation. Or not.
  • Have you seen that Zero Skill Map? Crazy!
  • Added "Alley" to the workshop.
  • Added the bird object to workshop.
  • Added more feedback about why you are sometimes thrown out of a game.
  • Players are now spawned in a random order the first round, after that it's based on game points.
  • Fixed the cross section exploit in Warehouse.
  • Bugfix: a bug where the game stopped looking for lobbies if the first attempt to join a lobby failed.
  • Bugfix: pressing Esc while the steam overlay is active shouldn't affect he game anymore (with some exceptions).
  • Bugfix: rockets shouldn't blast you all over the map anymore.

*This review is written from the point of view of someone who has only played singleplay and local multiplayer*

SpeedRunners is a great arcade style racing game (if you can call it that) which is fast paced and great to play with friends and family. It's similar to popular kart racing games except you run rather than drive a kart.

+Really nice art style
+Plenty of cool skins to choose from for your character
+Works well for local multiplayer
+Good BOTs
+Well designed and fun to play maps
+From what I can tell it has a good competitive multiplayer system though I haven't played it myself
+Reasonable price and good value for money
+The Devs release new skins every so often
+Fun to play
+Good replayability

+/-Relatively short matches, great if you just want a quick game of something

-Not very many maps though it does have workshop support
-Some of the items can be pretty annoying

A really fun game which is perfect for playing with family and friends

The "Speed" in the name Speed Runners is a double entendre. It is a game about going as fast as possible AND it's as addicting as crack.

Watch, as you run in the wrong direction!
Watch, as your friend drops a box on your face at the peak of a hard climb!
Watch, as you trip on spikes moments before your final victory!

A fast-paced, frantic game with very simple mechanics, but a surprising amount of depth to its gameplay. Fun with strangers, but priceless with friends.

Despite a lot of the glitches and other variety of issues I've had with this game (if I or another person I'm playing with lags for a split second it's like game over with how badly everything will glitch across the screen/getting randomly stuck in walls/etc etc), it is an immense amount of fun and definitely worth the money. It's a ton more fun to play with other people, especially your friends. On the upside though, 8/10 friendship breaker next to Mario Kart.

It's occasionally offputting with its updates on the maps, and usually the workshop levels have way more to be improved upon (for the most part they aren't worth playing in my opinion). Most of the changes on the maps so far are pretty good and add a bit more variety to the game play.

Playing a lot of ranked doesn't feel like a chore, both due to just how the game runs and that the community is pretty laid back about the game as well.

Speedrunners, a game of reflexes and grapple hooking your friends.

You really should get this game, honestly. It's definitely worth the friend rage. Also, the only issue I have right now would be the blast zone lines aren't transparent, which they should REALLY do.

Speedrunners is a game of running around a big map, grapple hooking your way to first place. Of course, it's only possible to grapple white ceilings, so the majority (unless allowed) of the map is going to be running, picking up item boxes, and trying to get to first place. What you have to do is make sure you keep on running til you can't. By that time you've hopefully won your first round. The game is in Early Access right now, but it's getting a lot better! The controls are also configurable and it's really best with a controller.

The items while not that plentiful are actually really fun regardless. You have rockets to shoot at people, EMP blasts to destroy: grapples, golden grapples, boxes, and also rockets; invincibility shield drill which protects you from harm, golden grapples which hook onto the closest player in the direction you face, and 3 boxes.

Speedrunners also has a nice twist to it where you can choose different modes to play. The most frustratingly fun has to be the mirrored track mode. Rapture just shoots rockets everywhere, lethal spikes, all X (X being either rockets or golden grapples last time I checked), and there may or may not be another I'm forgetting at the moment, but that's the fun of this game.

tl;dr Speedrunners is a REALLY fun friend rage-inducing game that makes you want to keep trying to aim for the top, but also can be played casually enough for fun.

I'd give this amazing Mario Kart-esque game a 9/10.

Sidescroller racing game, with really really intense gameplay. If you liked Super Meat Boy, or liked playing with the ninja
rope in any worms title, you gonna love this.

Are you leading? You just got hit by a giant rolling boulder
Leading again? You trip on a barrel that you jumped over like a 100 times before
Leading? Surprize freeze ray!
Leading? Someone just grappled you to the last position.
Again? Homing missile!

This game is full of surprizes, and sudden changes. I got the game barely an our ago and I fell in love with it.
Definitely worth buying a 4 pack for buddies.

(WARNING) First (serious) review of a game for me

Alright, this game is really great! Don't get me wrong when I say I dislike some aspects of it..

The maps are innovative and require a lot of learning in order to be competetive. But learning the map and the game without friends playing with you in a custom game can be really hard when these semi-pro people just dunk you in few secs every time you queue in a non-custom game. Guess it can also be reviewed as a plus that its skill cap is really high. Almost rogue like, for some players.

I might have over-exaggerated the 'pros' of the games you encounter solo, but the only way I truly enjoy this past the initial excitement (~1 hour in my case) is with real friends, not random people. Think it as a Super Smash Brawl game. Social fun is where this game is at.

As it is for the ranked system I can't say, it's not been available while I've been playing (during steam winter holiday sale 2014).

I give it
..for fulfilling the graphical and mechanic-wise aspect. Having workshop availability where you can add your own created maps is also a plus increasing the amount of different maps available.

Only reason I'm deducting one point (NOTE, things might change as game leaves early access) is for shortness and how quickly it becomes repetitive. I'm missing the lack of different game modes. But with friends at equal skill levels it's one of the most enjoyable experiences on steam. That is, until you get all the achievements and play it till boredom without anything new to experience.
Then it's time to switch game, and that can't be blamed on the game.

Totally worth the minimalistic sum of money I had to spend for this game. Also one of those exceptions, when it comes to buying early access games for me.

Thank you for your attention.
