What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“In Early Access we can see the community's favourite levels, features, characters, and their biggest concerns, then focus on those.
Would you like more Level Workshop support? More official weapons? A character workshop? Let us know!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Until mid-2015”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will have more content, less bugs, and will be free to play locally. Everyone who buys the game during Early Access will keep all functionality they have in the game.

The free version of SpeedRunners is available now on Steam! Search for SpeedRunners Party Mode!”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Gameplay features are all in and set! Play online or local multiplayer, single-player, and check out 10,000 created levels in the user-level workshop!
We're improving network code, fleshing out the leagues and progression system, working on redesigning the UI, adding more playable characters, and a lot more!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The final game will cost more or less the same, and local multiplayer is out there officially for free.
We do intend to sell character skin packs.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We read EVERYTHING that comes in! Everyone in the office is active on the forums, and chats to fans in Steam messenger all the time. Your reviews and comments and messages come up in conversation every day.”

Oops

Thank you all so much for your support over the last 24 hours. The pixel-art update was a resounding success, and the vast majority of players have been leaving lovely messages of support. We didn’t expect you all to love it so much — sometimes change can be off-putting, but the positive response was just so overwhelming. There have been only a few constructive pieces of criticism.

Unfortunately, it turns out that we… may have made a whoopsie.

As you know yesterday we announced the biggest SpeedRunners update ever, replacing the visuals with a more pixel-art look. This was based on extensive research that we performed in conjunction with the University of Oxford, and we couldn’t wait for our players to try it out and smother us with praise.

Unfortunately, it would appear that we were duped. It has now come to our attention that Oxford, Maryland doesn’t actually have a university. We’re not even sure if the head researcher we worked with, Dr. Massif Wang, is actually a real doctor. Or exists.

As a result, we stayed up into the early hours of the morning conducting new research to determine just how off the mark the original analysis had been. It turns out that the previous research was, well, all a bunch of taters.

For example, remember that Player Enjoyment graph? Turns out the axes were slightly off.

Even the free-to-play research was bogus. Turns out free-to-play games actually suck! Who knew. Good thing we didn’t go ahead with today’s update, and allow you to pay 99c to buy the Golden Hook whenever you needed it. Silver lining and all that.

What makes it so upsetting is that we know you all love the new style so much, yet this new research indicates that maybe you love us a bit too much, and are being blinded by your love for tinyBuild and SpeedRunners.

As a result, it is with deep regret that we will be reverting the visual style back to its original non-pixelated look later today. We hope you can forgive us on this, the first day of the month of April. Now let’s pretend that this never happened and move on with our lives.

SpeedRunners Gets New Pixel Art Style

After months of research and numerous heated debates amongst the SpeedRunners team, the biggest update in the game’s history goes live today, altering the visual design to give the experience a more pixel-art feel.

Check the new art work in action!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3gC2Gq3TSI

More and more indie titles these days are going down the pixel-art route. It’s widely believed that this is down to the reduced costs of producing pixel-art — but new research discovered by tinyBuild suggests that the average consumer is more likely to purchase a game if it is presented in this style.

Working with experts at the University of Oxford*, tinyBuild has determined that pixel-art games sell roughly 15 times better than other art styles. New ground-breaking statistics show that the perceived size of the pixels in a game directly correlates with the amount of enjoyment a player receives.

With this in mind, we have been painstakingly working day and night to provide the players, and our fans, with the visual style they never realized they wanted. SpeedRunners has been completely revamped to satisfy the pixel-art movement, and the pixel-art update is now live for all players.

Note that there is no way to revert back to the original art style — we’ve thrown all that gloss and finish into a bin marked “stupid” and it’s never coming back. We’re now in the process of pixelating all of our other games too, and any third-party partners who resist will be immediately dropped.

Gert-Jan Stolk, SpeedRunners designer extraordinaire and the main driving force behind this move, explains, “SpeedRunners was getting too mainstream. Now it feels like an actual indie game I could sit down and play at Starbucks.”

We cannot wait to see your positive reactions to our new direction for SpeedRunners, and tinyBuild as a whole.

We’ve also determined, again thanks to research from the University of Oxford**, that all players prefer free-to-play games over paid games, so we’re currently in the process of injecting as many in-app purchases into our games as possible. You can expect to see those popping up (literally!) very soon.

If you have any friend that owns this game, and you're willing to play with him/her, buy it right now.

This game is delightful in many ways, capable of making you smile or smash your keyboard/controller depending on the situation.

Totally recommended :).

This is a great side stroller type game. It's based around fast movement and tight controls, think of early SNES era games like Mario World.

The game has a lot of potential, the only **major** thing currently holding it back is faulty netcode and lack of dedicated servers (currently P2P only).

Hopefully this changes as the game grows, the only minor problem I had with the game is the camera can be a bit buggy. It doesn't always stay with where your character is.

If it wasn't for the netcode issues I would give the game a 9 / 10, but It will have to settle for a 6/10 until this issue is resolved.

Fun multiplayer Speedrunning game for up to 4 players. Gotta go fast like Sanic, right? Yep indeed you do! It's a highly competitive game.

If you play with people that are much higher rank than you, just do it. Don't rage. You will learn the tricks quite a LOT faster than you would playing with people the same rank as you! With enough practise, you'll be ace.

You may find that people say it's impossible to play with over 80 ping, but it IS possible! You just need to time some things earlier & predict where they're going to be.

Recent update made it harder to find lobbies (playing with 200 ping isn't that bad, come on). It's when a ping is unstable which ruins the play.

This screenshot was taken when the US/UK/Europe people would still be awake.

Change the Download Region in Steam to get around this. Or add "+search_distance worldwide" to the launch options.

Fun fact about unstable pings: The game is more likely to break, and can be quite hilarious sometimes. See this video if you would like to get an idea of what I mean:

This game is a great way to hone in your platforming skills. The people you will compete against are always going to beat you, but that's fine, because you're only going to get better! This game is for HARDCORE PLATFORMERS though, so I would not reccomend it for people into the FPS genre (unless you also play platformers, in which case go nuts). Overall a very great game.

P.S. This game has been known to ruin friendships.

Run, jump, swing, dodge, rinse and repeat, one day you will delte the need to run, then the need to jump, and finally the need to dodge, leaving you just swing through the entire level to victory. (Try the party demo to get a feel of the game).

Speedrunners is easily one of my favorite multiplayer games. Think 'Mario Kart if it was a platformer' or 'Smash Bros if it was a racing game'. The gameplay is super addictive once you get a handle on the controls (supposedly it's easier with a gamepad/controller, but I like the keyboard controls fine), and the community is pretty nice for the most part. My advice for new players would be to try out the origins mode in addition to the tutorial: it allows for instruction/practice on individual game mechanics as well giving some backstory on the game (even if it's pretty basic).

The workshop is super cool too. It's really interesting getting to see the creative and challenging level designs made by other players.

SpeedRunners is an awesome game.

While it mixes up the playstyle of Super Meat Bot, it also adds the speed of a racing game, the power-ups of any mario kart game and the grapple hook mechanism similar to the Just Cause series.

The main plot of the game is cool, while there's a lot of main characters, there's still 2 Youtuber packs (which I find waaay unescessary to have, since they're only reskins and the players have no audio or anything, it's just visual), there's hidden characters too, while you can play as Wolf from PAYDAY 2 and as a potato.

The game can be played up to 4 players, on an online match, or you can play with bots, choosing one of the three difficulties: Easy, medium or hard.

Even that the game is competitive and smooth, it doesn't and won't lack the sense of fun. Just like in Mount Your Friends, if it wasn't by the hanging dongs and the nude characters, the game would be totally focused on the competitiviness it has, while in SpeedRunners, the game has a gayish character with a pink unicorn costume, and another character with a big red ball head with a star on it, symbolizing the comunism.

The game has a nice plot, by first sight, since it involves all of an hero world where you need to save scientists from bombs.

93/100

The local co-op is what really makes this game epic. As long as you have at least one person, (up to 4 players) you and your friends will learn how competitive you really are. With laughs, swears, curses, and treats, and mild hootin and hollerin you will grow closer. The concept of messing your friends up to get ahead of them is amazing, and like i said, it really brings out your competitive side. This game is so much fun, i reccomend. 9/10. Would be 10/10 but the online matchmaking is kinda poor. Random people can rejoin the same game they just left due to the "rank" system. So just FYI.

If you have friends buy this game with them and play it. If you don't have friends, go make some just so you can play this game!

Really nice gameplay and new maps constantly made.
Better played with friends instead of random matchmaking
You basically run around a 2D track and use random powerups and boosts (think mariokart but 2d) and do ninja style grappling hooks on ceilings.
Best music to play with is high BPM techno style stuff or otherwise known as happy hardcore
