About This Game

Set 50 years after the climactic events of the original Red Faction, Red Faction: Guerrilla allows players to take the role of an insurgent fighter with the newly re-established Red Faction movement as they battle for liberation from the oppressive Earth Defense Force. Red Faction: Guerrilla re-defines the limits of destruction-based game-play with a huge open-world, fast-paced guerrilla-style combat, and true physics-based destruction.

Key features

  • Open World Guerrilla Warfare — You decide who, when, where and how to battle. Utilize guerrilla tactics, improvised weaponry, and modified vehicles to lead insurgent attacks on EDF targets. Launch attacks based on your own gameplay style, take on missions in any order you choose, or engage in destructive activities to weaken the EDF's grip on Mars.
  • Strategic Destruction — Use destruction to your tactical advantage, setting ambushes or chain reaction explosions to attack enemy strongholds and permanently modify the game environment. Leverage fully-dynamic physics-based destruction to improvise on the fly: blow holes in a wall or floor to set an ambush or escape, take out a staircase to stop your pursuers, or drive vehicles through blown out walls.
  • Evolving & Emergent Gameplay — Carve your path through an ever changing landscape as you improvise your combat tactics - mixing gameplay styles, vehicles, weapons and explosives to defeat the EDF.
  • Epic Sci-Fi Setting — Explore the huge, unforgiving Martian landscape, from the desolate mining outpost of Parker to the gleaming EDF capital city of Eos; then tear through the fully destructible open-world environments swarming with EDF forces, Red Faction resistance fighters, and the downtrodden settlers caught in the cross-fire.
  • Multiplayer Combat — There is no place to hide when you put your guerrilla warfare skills to the test in a variety of highly destructive multiplayer combat modes.

Do you enjoy spending your hours building structures and staring in awe at what you have created? Well this game is the exact opposite of that and will still make you stare in awe as it all falls apart. The only weapon you need is the sledgehammer and a whole lot of brute force.

Cool game regarding the price. Too bad is it so repetitive... and that the story is like inexistant. Expect 10 hours, one play every 3-5 years.

This game left a legacy too big to follow up.

Open world, massively detailed destruction on buildings, and a good length to boot (took me about 25 hours on xbox 360).

Right, let's try this again. I had to delete my original review, because I think I was a bit too harsh with it. That being said, I only have a strong enough opinion of the game to write a review after it's frustrated the living jelly out of me.

The destruction physics are great and there are plenty of tools to enjoy them with. That being said, your maximum ammo capacity is pitiful. Pair that with your absurdly tiny health bar and the harsh difficulty and you're not going to have much fun before either dying or having to run back to base to ammo up or shake off the cops.

I am really disappointed with this game, not because of what I paid for it, but because it could have been so much more fun. The same people who made this game also made Saints Row 2, but they must have been on a tight, tight leash with this project.

Set somewhere with less bland environment, with the difficulty scaled back, and more enjoyable missions and this game could be rival SR2 as my favorite game of all time. As it stands, all it has is destruction physics that come dangerously close to making me bust a nut. Sadly, however, I'm only left with a painful case of blue balls and a sense of wonder of what could have been.

It's a great game and the building physics is not overrated. You truly can break anything you want to. One thing however that did kinda ticked me off however is that buildings have very unrealistic structural support. You can hold 80 tons of rock on top of a sign pole and the building will not collapse. Also, you will break buildings into a million pieces, however, those pieces will magically disappear. It's like a buidling collapes and then suddenly all it's components are just... gone.

So certain building aspects are mildly infuriating. But then again, building physics are still loads of fun.

Multiplayer is my favorite part of this game. Multiplayer is like an arena shooter, with the same awesome destruction from singleplayer, same weapons, and added "backpacks" pickups that give you incredible abilities like running through walls with the force of a Rino.

Multiplayer is truly a unique experience, unfortunately, there are not enough players to reliably find a match when you often like.

However, there is a bot you can add as a friend on Steam that will message you when there are lobbies available. This bot is the alternative to waiting in matchmaking for ridiculous periods of time without finding any players.

You can add the bot here: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198259171976

At the beginning of the game, Alec (Our protagonist) says this:

"I'M NOT A TERRORIST!"

Alec then proceded to blow up every structure on planet Mars.

11/10 Would destroy everything again.

Outstanding arena-esque multiplayer portion that is comical and also somewhat competitive, taking a bit of skill and strategy to be victorious. Destruction really adds something dynamically that no other games have. The multiplayer is very much overlooked.

Red Faction Guerrilla is good for what it is, but it is starting to show its age.

The building destruction mechanics are awesome, and there still aren't really any games that compare to how satisfying and detailed the destruction of buildings is. Sadly, the insides of buildings feel very lifeless compared to the sculpted mountains and hills of Mars. Add the fact that you can raze the entire building with a mis-click, it adds to the lifelessness of buildings, and the world feels somewhat better without them. 90% of the buildings don't ever respawn, which means once you enjoy the destruction of everything on Mars once, you won't be able to do it again on the same save file. Also, having good building destruction kind of pales in comparison to the terrain deformation from the original Red Faction, and it is a shame that they couldn't somehow implement that as well.

The combat is the usual stale third person shooter type, similar to Watchdogs. The melee with things like hammers is pretty satisfying against enemies, though it is very risky on harder difficulties since enemies will take out half of your health with great accuracy while running up to them. The driving is OK, a little stiff, but solid. Smashing a truck through an outpost is great, and really highlights the great destruction engine.

The graphics are fast becoming very dated. The cutscenes look almost like something from a PS2 game, the human models look kind of chunky, like action figures, and I don't know if it's just me but the sound files for voice acting sound really compressed and garbage sounding, as if they were from a game from 2002. Mars looks fine, it looks like Mars.

The game is pretty unbalanced on the hard difficulty. Enemies empty magazines into you with very little inaccuracy, and because the health regeneration takes such a long time to begin, the sheer amount of enemies that start chasing you will kill you. The enemies also take a huge amount of damage. It helps make the EDF feel more like armoured bad guys, but it's very annoying using all of your ammo on only 3 normal bad guys, especially when there are 12 more around the corner. The sheer randomness of the physics system also takes part in causing much frustration. Sometimes getting hit in the head with a fallen turbine blade will only give you some damage and won't knock you down. Sometimes a stray hand-railing will knock you down, take out a quarter of your health, and pin you under a nearby walkway making you a sitting duck for enemy soldiers while you wait for the standing up animation to happen. I don't know what a remedy could be for something like this, because it makes sense to die from a bulding landing on your head. But sometimes the physics are just too random.

Overall, the game is good. It's just kind of showing it's age with some other problems from the time. If you are in the mood for games like GTA, Watchdogs, or other third-person drivey-shooty games, then this game will fit the bill with some added cathartic destruction.

You see that bridge? Yea, the one over there. 10 cars just driving, ever wanna destroy that bridge with a few sticky mines, a propane tank, and a hammer? If you said yes, then wow. That's oddly specific, but there's a game for you. In Red Faction: Harambe you control Call of Duty's Alex Mason on a quest to make everyone slightly annoyed by destroying every single house and bridge on Mars

See that friendly base? Sticky mines!
See that bridge? Hammer time!
See that enemy? Gun nut mode unleashed.

It's also $4.99 every other week (pretty much) so you got nothing to lose.

Great game for a bit of mindless open world destruction. 7 years later and no games can match this destruction. The game has also been updated, fixing bugs and removing the awful Games For Windows Live.
