If there was a "neutral" review level, that's what this review would be.
I'm a fan of non-respawn military shooters, and this is a reasonably functional, free-to-play one. So, if that alone is enough for you, this game might be of interest. It's *almost* enough for me.
If you've played America's Army before, then you may understand what I mean when I call this America's Army Lite. Realism has taken a bit of a back seat in favor of a faster pace. It's closer to the Counterstrike side of things, which is a disappointment for anyone that liked the earlier games. Faster movement, tighter quarters, DOOM-style health percentage (down to 1% health? Put a bandage on it!), etc.
Unfortunately, neither the gunplay nor the map design are up to snuff for this new direction. The shooting is pretty bog standard mediocre military FPS fare, and the maps are fairly uninspired and forgettable.
The game retains just enough of its former self to prevent it from truly being a mass-appeal shooter, but sheds so much of it as to no longer appeal to the niche market it once served. It's still in beta, so things can change, but it's in a pretty bad no-man's land right now.
