Racing with a Broken Axle

This is one of the games on steam where a neutral option would prove useful.
In its current state, I simply can't recommend this game, certainly not at $30. Maybe if you pick it up in a bundle for $3 or less, or a price tag of $5~10, but no more than this.

I actually enjoyed the game, having played to completion the two Battle Arenas, but it fell short on Racing and Monster Trucks due to one fundamental problem - the handling of the various vehicles was just horrible at speed. It's recommended in the first race tips to master the handbreak, though this seemingly does very little on its own. Used in conjuction with the boost (or being slammed from behind), I was able to take corners, and finished the first race on fifth or sixth position, but the problem with that was the even further loss of control, often resulting in slamming into someones living room, least for the first race.

Then there's the damage control system to contend with. I completely fail to understand how slamming into another vehicle at 160 kph head-on can deal only 1~3% of damage, while a slight "scratch" at half that speed can deal 5~15%+. I won, and lost, many a times for this during the Battle Arenas, even if did still technically win on points alone; which "feel" like for NPC's points are stopped been counted as soon as the player loses, instead of artifically continuing until the last one standing was revealed.

Graphics wise, can't complain too much. There's a wide selection of vehicles, colours, and even characters behind the wheels, seldom "repeated" by the NPCs, if at all. So there's plenty of variance on the track. Though at no point did I actually see for example a wheel flying off, or a character being thrown out of the car when the car itself dies off, which can apparently be done in one of the other game modes where you land them in a target following a crash. A game from 1995, Destruction Derby 2, was based much the same as Flatout 3, and even for its time, if you took too much damage various parts of the vehicle would go flying; the wheels included, which then (was supposed too, but aided sometimes.) negatively affected your vehicle control, or you had the hood bouncing around obstructing your view until more damage knocked it flying off. These are relatively small things, but they matter to the overall experience.

Long Story Short

Pro's
  • Wide Selection of Graphical Characters, Vehicles and Scenes
  • Multiple game modes ranging from Racing to complete Destruction
  • 'The Stig' reference with the unknown character
  • Unlockable Characters & Vehicles
  • Achievements

Con's
  • Very poor vehicle handling, in certain instances a 1 star vehicle was easier to control than a 5 star.
  • Poor damage control system. 'Scratching' doing considerbly more damage than head-on collisions.
  • Damage control system based as a whole, rather than individual parts of the vehicle.
  • Vehicle clipping. Occasionally at speed you'd drive straight through another vehicle, rather than hitting them
  • (Maybe just me?) No, or little, ability to recharge your boost gauge. Tips say it recharges during jumps or causing damage, but it seems much more random than this.
  • Damage having little to no affect on vehicle control. No losing of wheels until completely destroyed.
  • Lack of varied sound effects; e.g horns, announcer discussions, crash sounds.
  • Random unexplained "flatout3.exe has stopped working..." errors, or in some cases, inability to load the game at all according to some users.
  • No Trading Cards ;)

So once again, I cannot recommend this game in its current state, at the current price.
If you can buy it in a bundle, then by all means. Otherwise, wait for a 80~95% sale, by which point it may be worth a couple of hours of entertainment, but overall, if the developers ever come back to this game, it does have its potential if cared for properly.

Over the past few years. the FlatOut series has been on a hiatus. Before this game, the only genuine new installment in the series was FlatOut 2, and while Ultimate Carnage is an excellent game, it's very much a heavily reworked FlatOut (and so was FlatOut: Head On for the PSP). Since Bugbear Entertainment (the developer of the first two FlatOut games, as well Ultimate Carnage and Head On) parted ways with series publishers Empire Interactive (now defunct) and Strategy First, development of the third installment in the series was handed over to Team6 Game Studios B.V. And FlatOut 3: Chaos and Destruction is that third installment. Unfortunately, while the driving model is okay (at best), the game itself just isn't fun, with lifeless tracks, a lack of variety in modes, and idiotic AI making this game (especially for fans of FlatOut) difficult to recommend.

The game itself consists of nine game modes, with over 40 cars and 60 tracks (set in 10 environments). This may sound like the game has a lot to offer, but to be frank, it doesn't. Half of those nine modes are simply variations of the standard race mode, and differences are minimal at best. There's a mode where you race at nighttime with one opponent, wtih stormy weather, which is supposed to make the car more difficult to control. In reality, there's next to no difference between the handling in dry or wet weather, and the rain effects are pitiful (when a raindrop hits the road, it doesn't split into several smaller ones; instead, it simply vanishes and a raindrop symbol that seems to have been copy and pasted from Google images is plastered on where it landed). The same problem applies for the offroad and speed modes, except there's no weather system in either. There's a stuntman mode where you launch your driver from your car while it's moving and a mode where you run over zombies which, while done better in previous FlatOut games, are probably the two noteworthy parts of the game. There's also no career mode of any kind, so there really isn't a lot to do in the game. There's a basic online multiplayer mode for up to 16 players, but it's nothing to get excited (no one is playing this game online). While the lack of variety is a turnoff, it's the lackluster gameplay that really prevents any of these modes from being much from.

The driving model for FlatOut 3 is very different than previous games. While the FlatOut games are usually known for their realistic physics engine and weighty, deliberate feel of the cars, FlatOut 3 forgoes realism in favor of more arcadey, exaggerated car handling. For the most part, I think it works, mainly because the cars are very responsive and drifting around corners is controllable without letting you not drive wtih style. The tracks have also been designed to accomodate these changes, wtih large, wide roads, and plenty of opportunities to take small shortcuts. There are a few issues with the controls, though. Sometimes, when drifting, your car will hang onto its momentum for longer than desired, resulting in you either spinning out or hitting a wall. There are also moments when you crash into an object at high speeds and it does nothing, yet you slightly hit a barrier at medium speed and your car gets destroyed (complete with a "Press 'R' to respawn" prompt). These things don't happen often, but it's very irritating when they do. Sadly, whiel the basic controls are fine, and the cars feel okay to drive, playing the game just isn't much fun.

One reason why the game is so dull is the track design. The tracks lack distinguishing features from other tracks or environments, as the roads are incredibly wide in them all and parts of other tracks seem copied and pasted from another, and combined with the lack of variety in modes, most races just end up feeling like the last race you just did. They're also incredibly barren, as there are no pedestrains wandering the streets and no shops or billboards to smash through. Nope, it's just you, your opponents, and the lifeless road. This lack of personality extends to the entire game, with barebones menu design and cars that may look and drive differently, but lack any particular style (this also applies to the game's drivers), making them all forgettable.

The enemy AI in the game is also quite lacking. Opponents frequently crash at the start of races and they drive much slower than you, which, in most cases, makes winning a breeze. They'll also try to ram other fellow competitors off the track instead of trying to win, which makes it seem like they just want to be somewhere else, and they probably do. It's not just during races that the AI displays idiotic behavior. Demoliton derbies - in which you and up to 23 other drivers try to wreck each other until last man standing - have especially ludicrously obvious AI problems, and they all the more give the feeling FlatOut 3 was rushed out the door. In any arena, the AI will frequently become confused on how to navigate the environment, making them vulnurable to being by rammed by you. For instance, in one grassy, downhill arena, I was one of the last three cars still standing, and went up the hill to avoid taking anymore damage. I watched my opponent clash with other, with the latter being wrecked. I expected him to come charging at me full speed, as my car's damage was critical (as was his), so I surely would've been wrecked. However, because I wasn't anywhere near him, and the location of other wrecked competitors was in the center of the arena, he simply kept driving around there in circles until I decided to ram him at full speed, meaning he practically gave me the win.

Speaking of the demolition derbies, these are the most disappointing parts of the game. In previous FlatOut games, the demoliton derbies were fast, frantic, and tense scrambles to wreck the others without causing too much damage to yourself, as there was an element of risk and reward. Do I charge in there and give them a beating, or do I sit it out and try to keep my car in good shape? FlatOut 3's demolition derbies don't have any tension or exctiement. Every car in the game is built like a tank (even the high-powered sports cars), and the collision detection is also horrific at times. Most of the time, ramming an opponent at 120 mph head-on does hardly damage to them, as the percentage done in most cases is a mere 5%. In fact, the most damage I did to an opponent was by grinding my car on their roof after being hit by another car. When I got off their roof, the damage done to them was 43%.

FlatOut 3's graphics certainly don't help it, either. Had it been released in 2004, it would've looked pretty good. Now, though, this game simply looks dated. I already mentioned the poor weather effects and dull tracks, but it goes beyond that. The draw distance in the game is very short, with side objects such as grass and signs frequently appearing 5 ft in front of you as you accelerate. The damage modelling has also been heavily downgraded from the previous games. While bumpers hang, doors fly open, and windshields crack, fenders don't come off the car and little things that once broke (such as headlights) can't be broken. There are some decent touches in the visuals, like some extremely overdone lighting effects (you've never seen this much bloom in the Detroit suburbs). There isn't enough space left, so I'll have to end this more quickly than I like. While FlatOut 3 isn't comepletely broken and has decent driving mechanics, the lack of variety, lifeless tracks, and limited AI make this game hard to feel excited about. It has some redeeming qualities, but not nearly enough to make it a worth buying, and it's boring in absolutely every way.

this game is a shame to the original flatouts, if you think this is good, you're an idiot, and let me go into gtreat lengths about why:

1: has no damage model. a flatout game without a damage model is like nfs 2015 without customization

2: no career mode. this dissapointed me greatly because all other flatout games had one

3: horrid controls

4: blatent rip-offs of todays popular cars, like the mitsubishi evo x (scroll through the car list and you'll see what i mean)

5: the biggest one, THIS ABOMINATION ISN'T EVEN MADE BY BUGBEAR! this is what really gets me, because it's in a pack with games by bugbear, and those games were and still are awesome to this day.

This game has absolutely terrible gameplay. Physics are worthless in it, you can't control anything to save your life, no in race music, no force feedbad (The worst part in my opinion), lack of throttle control from what I can tell, and an overall discrace to BugBear and the Flatout name.

IF YOU LIKED THE ORIGINAL FLATOUT AND FLATOUT 2, DO NOT GET THIS GAME, I REPEAT, DO NOT GET IT!

I got this on sale and I didn't expect much. But ho-ly crap this game is awful. This is not the flatout in have grown to love. Its... it's... just horrible game with cars in it and don't get my started on the physics. You could ram some one at full force and it.

The game name says Flatout. But do not think of it as Flatout. It is not even made by same developers as the original Flatout, Flatout 2 and Ultimate Carnage. This is made by Team 6. Team 6 has not made a single good game ever. And this is not exception.

This game is absolutely horrible, I do not recommend it for anyone.
The physics are one of the worst I have ever seen in racing game.
Crashing does not feel good when it should in this type of game.
The graphics look just ugly. Even the first Flatout from 2004 looks better than this in my opinion.
There is not even a proper career mode, just a boring challenge mode that has random single races you can complete.
This game is overpriced, it should cost 5€/5$ at max, and even then I would not recommend the game to anyone.

Play the good old Flatout instead, or check out the Next Car Game by the developers of original Flatout games (Bugbear Entertainment). That will be a true demolition racing/derby game.

DO NOT BUY FLATOUT 3
