A must-buy for anyone who has played the orignal Rainbow Six or Rogue Spear. This game keeps what made the previous Rainbow Six games amazing and adds more while fixing lots of issues.

This game was the peak of Ubisoft's Rainbow Six franchise. Here is why;

-Realistic AI. The enemy AI will execute hostages if they see the player, run if they are outnumbered, and even surrender to trick the player into letting your guard down, so that their friend can shoot the player in the back!
-Lots of weapons, gear, and customisability. One can customise not only their own soldier's weapons, gear, and armour, but their teammates as well.
-Planning. The game allows the player to set waypoints for their team and AI teams, and the AI teams will automattically follow. One can even set "Go codes" to make the AI wait for the code to begin an action, such as breaching.
-The multiplayer still works. One can set up their own dedicated server in a few simple steps. See my discussion post for help.
-Lots of fun game modes and maps. This game has many fun game modes, such as Lone Wolf (terrorist hunt alone); Terrorist Hunt (kill all the terrorists); and Hostage Rescue (self-explanatory). It also features classic maps such as Peak, Presidio and Prison.
-Fairly good graphics. While these graphics aren't amazing, they still hold up well today.
-Non-linear maps. Play your way.

So, if you have played Rainbow Six Vegas 1 or 2, come see what the classic games were like! If you've never played Rainbow Six before, now is a great time to start!

If you want to check out what a real tactical FPS plays like this is the game you are looking for. While not as rich on options as some in the genre the simple and fluid gameplay makes this the definitive game of its time.

It's a shame this style of PC game play has disappeared over the years. Remember when the in-store PC game section had 5,6 or more aisles available, not just this years 5 or 6 new releases.

While I do not have an abundance of hours clocked on this game, I did have the disc when it came out in 2003. Since then, I have played that thing to death: memorizing enemy locations, the stats of certain characters, and the best weapons combinations. Why? Because not only does this game have excellent gameplay, but no matter how many times you beat it, you can always find better ways to play, or cooler ways to succeed.

The positive aspects of the game are inherent to the gameplay - being a tactical shooter, Rainbow Six 3 (Raven Shield) with its expansions let you use maps to guide ally movements and actions. An example: I know that there is a hostage at the room on the right above the stairs. I can map Green Team, the group I have equipped with heavy assault rifles, to breach the double doors in the center while Red Team, with their silenced weapons, push through the exit in the back, cutting them off quickly. This all happens while I send Gold team to snipe from the runway, ensuring no tangos get the jump on us. We go on the call "Bravo."
It's the most fun I have had playing a Tom Clancy Game.

The negatives come only with the age of the game. It was made in 2003, so the graphics, compared to today, are sub-par. That also means the the AI is a little slow and flawed. Sometimes terrorists can pinpoint your position and pull off a headshot without ever knowing you were there, and sometimes your allies will walk into a full warehouse of badies walking backwards, continuing the slaughter. This can be incredibly aggravating, but these occurences are few and far between.

You have a lot of freedom with gun customization, especially for a game of this particular era, and a lot of freedom with how you plan and execute your missions. This is a must play for any Tom Clancy fan. 8/10

Dear potential player or veteran R6:3 player:

Here is a new way to play Terrorist Hunt mode, in case you get bored.

Step 1: Take your team to your favorite room or area of the map, and take cover.
Step 2: Are you ready? Good. Now press ~ to open the console, and type 'callterro'.
Step 3: Smile. Every terrorist on the map is now rushing to your location :D
Step 4: Don't die.

Note: Not all terrorists come out of the woodwork. You might have to go out and hunt down the last couple. This doesn't work so well (at all) on the shipyard map for some reason. All in all, some maps work better than others with this little experiment.

As an old Rogue Spear veteran, playing nearly every Rainbow Six in the past 16 years, I have quiet a lot to say, that's why I'll sort what I have to say in to a PRO/CONTRA list.

PRO: After finishing the tutorial, you will be able to control your team, your equipment and will have enough tactical basic knowledge to actually understand how the game works and how to master your first mission. There is a massive option on weapons in this game, Assault Rifles,Sub-machine guns,Pistols,Machine-guns,Sniper rifles, grenades, explosives, electronical kits, technical equipment as heart-beat sensors and much more! You have 3 different types of clothing, Light,Medium,Heavy in many many different camos/colors. You have a big option of team-members you can pick how you want to, each member has also an own CV + Health datas ( eye color, age, size, weight ) and each team member has own advantages and disadvantages. Every team-member you can pick, has an own specialisation skill ( Electronic Specialist,Assaulter,Sniper,Surveillance,Explosive specialist ) Since you can pick specialists and can create your team how you want to, you COULD for example create the perfect team and also choose equipment for each team-member. You have a very good " Mission-planer " before each match, where you can set waypoints and more. The campaign is made pretty nice, interesting story, good spoken and written, pretty realistic AIs ( Terrorists and Hostages ) and very nice large to medium sized maps. There is also a multiplayer which is dead without using programs like GAME RANGER or others, there are quiet a lot of mods for this game you could use and also packs like Athena. The Graphic is pretty good ( Check screenshots in gallery ).

CONTRA: There is really nothing negative, except a few things. You can't zoom in to iron sight, iron sight does not exist ( only with mods ) but you can use your scope ( if mounted, some rifles already have an integrated scope, like for example the G36 ). Multiplayer is kind of dead ! But there are some players in forum, who say they play multiplayer. But I've been never really playing Multiplayer in 16 years I play Rainbow Six games, because Rainbow Six is very enjoyable and never boring even in singleplayer. Sadly the game has no " special effects " like massive blood massacres and bullet holes in human bodies, you only can see bullet holes in walls, glass, metal. I can't think about bullet holes in your enemies, like it was in rogue spear. Blood does hit the wall when you kill an enemy standing next to a wall though !

Well, I hope it wasn't too much text. Rainbow Six is DEFINITELY a MUST for every tactical fps player! This game is the TITAN KING of all tactical FPS games, not to compare to games like CS,CoD,Battlefield. This game has similarities to SWAT 4 though !

I'm going on a ladder -> there's a bad guy
-> the bad guy shoots me in the face
-> my teammates are climbing the ladders, one by one
-> the bad guy kills the whole team that was climbing the ladder

10/10 would climb a ladder all together again

You will struggle to find a tactical shooter that compares with the realism of Rainbow Six 3. I played this and Rogue Spear consistently 'back in the day', and I still find myself coming back to it. I'm hoping that in time something may be released that challenges this game for the best tactical shooter ever. But, at this point in time, if you are after realism when it comes to planning and CQB, look no further.

This game will reward you for good planning and flawless execution, and will punish you just as quickly for simple errors of judgement. Pick up this to see what tactical shooters are really like.

10/10 - Best tactical shooter bar none.

I've played this for a few hours. The nostalgia is real and brings me back to when I played Old Bow and Black Arrow on the first xbox. My clan BTK dominated the GameBattles leaderboards! Sometimes I just turn it on and listen to the menu song on repeat... Why cant they make an HD REMIX?!

Truthful in its nature of strategy and action, R63 is quite undeniably the last true tactical game to have come in the series.
Pitting you in a what-would-be a spec op's worst nightmare scenarios too crazy for real-life, you're given simple objectives that usually encompasses rescuing hostages, preventing certain destruction, and all the while killing everyone else in sight (enemies do rarely surrender though). The levels are great and complex, but some may prove to be too much of a challenge, with some of the most unforgivingly tough gun combat you'll face. As hard as it can get, this instead left me craving for more for some reason.
Enjoyment is however, marred by a few technicalities to the likes of the occasional dumb but crazy aimbotting enemy AI and slightly underwhelming gunplay. What's more annoying is the incompetency of your own teammates, who may fare well in the easier levels but get completely obliterated in certain, more assault-oriented levels. Ultimately it doesn't matter how much strategic map planning comes into play, it all boils down to the player's own level of FPS skills for the best success, which puts into question the real importance of the tactical aspect.

Regardless, this game goes far behind SWAT 4 as one of the best tactical shooter I've ever played. And given the state of the Tactical Shooter genre that has since died off in gaming trend, this position will always remain as such, sadly.

3.5/5

In my opinion, this is one of the greatest multiplayer tactical FPS titles on PC. I use this game as my point of reference when comparing with newer tactical FPS titles.

PROS :

- Huge arsenal of weapons and gadgets
- Large selection of maps containing varied environments
- Great gameplay with tight gun control, multiple stances (including a unique "fluid" leaning system) and good damage modeling
- The graphics still hold up to this day, and you can run it on just about any rig configuration
- Immersive sound effects (authentic gun sounds, enemy chatter, ambient noises, player character movement sounds, etc.)
- Complete multiplayer suite featuring customizable game settings
- Unpredictable AI that will flank, patrol and call for backup
- You can still find several populated servers online, and the modding scene is still active

CONS :

- Requires a ubi.com account to access multiplayer functionality
- Can be brutally difficult at times due to the aforementioned unpredictable AI
- Lacks in-game VOIP
