About This Game

Inspired by the 1983 cult classic film, Wargames, DEFCON superbly evokes the tension, paranoia and suspicion of the Cold War era, playing on the fascinating aspects of psychological gameplay that occur during strategic nuclear warfare.
You play a General hidden deep within an underground bunker. Your mission is to successfully exterminate your enemy's civilian population whilst saving your own. Points are awarded or lost depending on both the efficacy and thoroughness of your nuclear vendetta and the number of your own civilian deaths. In order to win you must wipe out the enemy population and simultaneously disable the enemy's ability to retaliate against you. This is an extremely difficult task since launching an attack on the enemy exposes the positions of your own Ground Silos, Subs and Bombers the moment they launch nuclear weapons, making you extremely vulnerable and exposed to a crushing counter-attack.
Desperate attempts must be made to form fast, tactical alliances, alliances that may at any moment break-down to become the treacherous and most deadly of betrayals. Everyone looks to each other in a state of nervous suspense and paranoid accusation. In all-out nuclear Armageddon, everybody dies, everybody loses, you just have to make sure you lose the least!

Have only been playing the game for a very short while and have found myself in a very Fallout style 'Great War' situation between China and the United States.

- I sweat nerviously as minor skirmishes lead to my Naval power being destroyed beyond a pair of Submarines hiding away in the Ice Caps.

-The Chinese Navy has prevented any Recon Aircraft from penetrating to find the Chinese silo and Radar locations.

-Nearly an hour passes in DEFCON One and neither side takes the final steps toward the Nuclear Madness, I sneak my Submarines deep into Chinese waters, one off the coast of Tokyo, the other off the coast of India.

-I step away for a moment to make dinner.

-Alarms blare, Panic ensues. I return at a dead sprint stubbing my toe on a table and falling to the floor screaming in agony. I shout to my Girlfriend

"FOR THE LOVE OF GOD FIRE EVERYTHING!"

-In the Chaos, Silo's spit forth their rods of death at major Chinese Cities. Aircraft Scramble from the assorted airfields located in Alaska, Fighters to draw fire for the Bombers carrying their horrifying cargo. The Chinese respond in kind, their Silos bursting to life. My submarines seize the opporunity to deliver a harsh counter attack firing their arsenel at Chinese silos.

Soon i manage to collect myself and make my way back to my computer horrified at the propects that await me. To my even greater horror i realized something.

The Chinese didn't fire first.

A TV show my son was watching in the background had alarms and threw me into a panic.

Soon after the casualty reports came in.

9/10 would plunge the world into a Nuclear Apocalypse because of a kid's TV show again.

A poignant game that nails the atmosphere of nuclear war. The gameplay itself is simple but entertaining, even against AI opponents. If you're looking for a game that would thoroughly dissect the different facets of nuclear war, I'm not sure this one is for you. It's a very humble, very brief look at the emotions brought on by such a conflict. For that I'd say it's worth playing.

DEFCON is a neat little multi-player end of the world simulator which was inspired by the 1980's movie Wargames which showcased what was then some pretty high tech graphics/computers running 'Wargames' Amazing how far we've come.

The first game I played was horrifying and disturbing. The second game I played was the same but to a lesser degree. The more I play, the more it turns into a simple RTS that I'm not very good at. Get it on sale because you probably won't play it for more than a few hours.

The mechanics are interesting, but every game is the same except for what territory you own and the basic rule set. I'd give it a 6.5/10

Gobal Thermonuclear War. Mutually Assured Destruction. In the final war, nobody will win, and everybody dies, but in DEFCON perhaps you can lose the least.

Taking inspiration from the 1983 film Wargames, you take control of a global superpower on the verge of the nuclear apocalypse. Deploy your silos, radars, and submarines, defend your territory while blowing the other guys away forever.
The game takes about 15 minutes if played on the fastest speed or up to 6 hours to complete if left on the slowest setting. You can jump back and forth between them as you see fit, allowing you to give orders in very slow time without being overwhelmed, then speed up time to see the results of your actions.

Boiled down to its core, this is a game of chicken. Should you strike first, hoping to cripple your opponents chance for retaliation? Or should you wait, attempt to outlast their attacks, and deliver your own killing blow when they’ve been depleted? Do you send your naval forces aggressively towards the enemy coastline or keep them close to home in order to defend? It takes them a long time to travel the whole ocean, so your decision will be a lasting one.

The music is somber and funereal, as it should be in a game about dealing instant fiery death to untold millions of people. The graphics capture that cold, heartless, military wargame style perfectly.

There is no campaign to work through, no storyline to finish. There’s just the single scenario of global destruction to play again and again, though depending on the numerous modifiable game settings and which continent you play, they will always turn out different. You can make it so losing your own citizens is weighed more heavily than killing others, or vice versa. You can make alliances unbreakable, or change the number of units each team will have. There is endless replayability here.

It’s a good thing that this scenario is no longer in the forefront of our minds like it was in the 60′s, 70′s, 80′s, and even 90′s. We no longer fear this afternoon of destruction, where the entire world is wiped out due to a domino effect of retaliation. Yet it is still very much possible in today’s world. Nuclear arms are still held by numerous countries the world over.

DEFCON is an interesting little strategy game with some really good decision-making opportunities. This would be a perfect game for a LAN party full of deal-making and backstabbing, but playing it alone is a rather somber experience.

Guaranteed to ruin your friendships! Kill them before they kill you.

Good game in small doses, the primary draw for this game is to play with friends.

If you have any...... even if you do, they will probably hate you after you annihilate them :D

Quite a fun game. It can be extremely competitive at times! I just find it annoying when you're winning a match, and they quit before it ends. You don't get your win, nobody does. I've won plenty of matches but it doesn't count towards I have, you might see that a lot if you get this game. But unless you don't care about wins and loses, enjoy it!

The satisfaction after nuking is great. i kept losing and losing to my freinds but when i won it was great. You have to be really smart with where you place your silos, radars, air bases and ships. Also if you you are bad at the game don`t worry its not exactly bad that your terrible at nuclear warfare!
