New for Summer '07

This update includes a new map, a new vehicle and some major graphical enhancements to the game and is available to owners of the game for free through Steam. The new map - Krivoi Rog - gives players the largest tank slugfest to date, with 16 square kilometers of terrain, 3000 meter viewable range and up to 50 players. This map also features the new vehicle - the German Panzer IV G, providing the German players with some additional fire-power for the mid-war period.

In addition to the new map and vehicle, an all-new adaptive bloom system has been added for the game's graphics, making the bloom crystal-clear even at low resolutions. For further eye-candy, Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering settings are now configurable in-game.

New for Spring '07

  • Ten new maps, the winning entries in Tripwire's Custom Map Competition. Tripwire worked with the developers of each of these maps to ensure the maps are optimized, polished, and gameplay balanced. Highlights in the new map-pack include:
  • "Smolensk Stalemate": the contest winning map features perfectly balanced to-and-fro infantry combat through ruined villages and trenches in August 1943.
"Leningrad": features close-quarters infantry fighting in the ruined streets of the city, above them in the bombed-out buildings and deep beneath them in the sewers, all with close-in armor support.
"Berezina": the After-Hourz team surpass themselves on this rural/village map, introducing not just a new vehicle (the Russian BT-7 light tank), but also the first functional anti-tank gun in the game. To cap it off, the BT-7 even carries tank-riders.
"Black Day July": one of the very best for tank combat fans, set in the rolling countryside around Prokhorovka as German and Russian armor clash en masse during the Battle of Kursk.
  • Increased player limits. A new level of intensity with 50+ player multiplayer battles (up from the previous limit of 32).
  • New community made content, including the Russian BT-7 light tank with infantry tank riders and the first player controllable anti-tank gun in the game.
  • New soundtrack: The "Orchestra" comes to the Ostfront - the game now features a complete in-game soundtrack from composer Matthew Burns.
  • Gameplay enhancements. The addition of several features requested by the clan/ladder/league community to enhance competitive play.

The single best game I have played. I have spent thousands of hours playing this, before steam started recording hours. I've been longing to find a game which would give me that magical feeling again

Altough I prefer Red Orchestra 2 Heroes of Stalingrad, I have to say that Ostfront 41-45 hasn't lost its charme yet. The graphics are old, sure, but there's still a small community which keeps the game alive. Just you join a server with 30+ players, and you'll forget about its weaknesses. The main reason for me to play Heroes of Stalingrad instead of Ostfront 41-45 is the well-developed ranking system with levels and much more weapons.

I waited a week or so to get this, as my graphics card is a little too old to run the second.
And let me tell you what, that week or so was well worth it.
For a eight year old game, this is one of the best shooters i've ever played.
Aiming down the sights is a must, rifles have to be re-bolted after every shot, a few bullets can kill etc.
Tanks feel very natural as well, you're either a driver, gunner, or a machine gunner, there's no be all end all position in said tanks. The driver and gunner have to work in perfect unison to survive against another tank and reloading times can be a killer.
The maps are big, without feeling too oversized.
I've yet to play the Darkest Hour modification but am downloading it at this moment.

If you can't run the second, or missed out on the free day I highly reccomend spending the 10 bucks on this. Even if the servers aren't as populated, graphics a tad out dated and some other very minor things, you won't be dissapointed.

First: RO:Ostfront isnt the game everyone likes. Its quite old, so there are just a couple (about 300) people still playing it and because of its age the graphics arent the best too (for me its ok but thats a subjective point). Then its very realistic and slow so you just cant rush somewhere in CoD style, instead you need tactics and a good communication (wich can be a pro argument if you like stuff like this) to make a good round.
One of the good points is the atmosphere: especially in the maps of the destroyed germany where the last germans fight for a already lost war, defending the last strongholds eg. the Reichstag, you really can believe how much war sucks, so the game doesnt give the view of a war that is cool and spread with heroism, instead you can die already by 1 shot. Another good thing for me is that there are no perks or sth like that, so the enemy is always totaly equal to you, you will survive or die because the you or the enemy just was BETTER in shooting and not because he hacked or payed allot of bucks to get benefits.
So Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 is a very special game which the ones like and the ohers dont. If you want to play fast game where you can rush all the time this game wont be the right game for you. If you instead are interested of a very realistic WW2 shooter and shouldnt be interested of RO2 or just want to chekc out the first game of the RO serie, this game can be really fun

pros:
-athmosphere
-allot of weapons
-giant maps with epic tankbattles

neutral (you can decide for yourself if its a pro or a con):
-no perks
-very realistic
-hard recoil for all weapons
-you nearly always die after 1 hit
- very slow gameplay

cons:
- low graphics
- small community

This is probably the best FPS I've played in a while. You'll be like "pewpewpewpewpewpew" wit' a MG and some sniper will smack your ♥♥♥♥. But that doesn't matter because you're having fun. It's Nazi on Soviet action too ♥♥♥♥in' hot for my ♥♥♥♥ing mind man.

8/10 would manually reload.
